Weezer were among the many people in Los Angeles this week who showed up for John Mulaney’s Everybody’s in L.A., performing two songs on the comedian’s delightfully shaggy and silly one-week-only talk show.
The band led with “The Good Life,” the great Pinkerton single about wanting nothing more than to shake off anxiety, heartache, and despair, and get back out in the world (even though the song is still shot through with a bit of that anxiety, heartache, and despair). Mulaney introduced the performance with characteristic anti-zeal: “Hey party animals,...

Along with the announcement of their new “Voyage to the Blue Planet” 2024 tour in celebration of The Blue Album’s 30th anniversary, Weezer will be releasing a deluxe version of their seminal 1994 debut this year.
Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo confirmed the new deluxe version during an interview on Audacy Check In, and mentioned that there are unreleased Weezer tracks about to be unearthed. “They just sent me this giant box set with like four albums in it, so I was just looking at it before I walked in here,” Cuomo told Audacy host Kevan Kenny, “There’re a lot of old show recordings and rehearsal recordings. Like very early Weezer.”
When asked if Cuomo knew the release date of the new tunes, he couldn’t say much, but does assume that they’ll be out before Weezer embarks on their “Voyage to the Blue Planet” tour in September. Elsewhere in the interview with Audacy,...

Wild Pink are back with a new single, “Air Drumming Fix You.”
“Air Drumming Fix You” is Wild Pink’s first offering since 2022’s Ilysm, and their first since recently signing to Fire Talk Records. John Ross, Wild Pink’s frontman, narrates scenes of impressionistic contrast in “Air Drumming Fix You,” jumping from VR scapes to church pews. “She was air drumming to ‘Fix You,'” Ross mutters in the song’s blooming, majestic finale, referencing the Coldplay song before warbling saxophones return beside him. Stream the new track below.
Wild Pink are currently gearing up for a new US tour, where they’ll be performing alongside Greg Mendez, Sun June, Empty Country, Sweet Harm, and The Ravonettes for select dates. Dave Matthews — yes, the one with the band — joined Dinosaur Jr. onstage during their show in Seattle Wednesday night (January 12th), where they all did a cover of Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer” together.
Dino Jr. like to bring their friends onstage. While they were in London last November, they brought out My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields to shred on a cover The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven.” In just the past week alone, they’ve recruited Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus, Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, Red Fang’s Bryan Giles, and The Dandy Warhols’ Peter Holmström at various shows.
And Matthews wasn’t the only guest Wednesday, either: Mudhoney’s Mark Arm also assisted J Mascis and company for covers of The Stooges’ “T.V. Eye” and “Real Cool Time,” while Pearl Jam/Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron sat in during “Yeah We Know.” See some fan-captured clips...

Hayley Williams and her Paramore band members have a tape they’d like to play for you. Not long after parting ways with Atlantic Records to become an independent rock band, Paramore is teasing a partnership with A24 to release a 16-track Stop Making Sense tribute album inspired by the life-altering album and concert performance by the Talking Heads. While details remain a mystery, the project teases “16 tracks from 16 artists.”
Paramore is singer Hayley Williams, guitarist Taylor York, and drummer Zac Farro. Recently, the band created a panic among its fanbase when rumors about them breaking up circulated online. The nail-biting occurred when the band removed its website and scrubbed its social media platforms. However, the band has no intention of parting ways—quite the opposite. In addition to announcing the Stop Making Sense tribute album, Paramore will support Taylor Swift on her sold-out Eras arena tour in 2024.

In a perfect coalescence of late-’80s indie rock delight, Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine joined Dinosaur Jr. onstage in London Tuesday night (November 14th) to perform a rendition of The Cure‘s “Just Like Heaven.”
Mbv and Dino Jr. toured together back in the day, and it looks like they still regularly keep in touch. The latter band brought Shields onstage at a Dinosaur 30th anniversary show in New York in 2015; Shields stopped by Dinosaur Jr.’s Camp Fuzz rock camp in 2019; and J Mascis appeared in a promo clip for Shields’ new Fender pedal last September. And although Dinosaur Jr. have a studio version of their “Just Like Heaven” cover, our records indicate this is the first time Shields has performed it with them live. As you might expect, it was very loud and kicked ass.
Shields also assisted Dinosaur Jr. with “Tarpit” from their 1987 album You’re Living All Over Me,...

J Mascis has announced his fifth solo album, What Do We Do Now, out on February 2nd via Sub Pop. As a preview, the Dinosaur Jr. mastermind has shared the record’s lead single “Can’t Believe We’re Here” and a star-studded accompanying music video.
Mascis recorded What Do We Do Now at his own studio, Bisquiteen, in Western Massachusetts. With guest performances from The B-52’s Ken Mauri on keys and Matthew “Doc” Dunn on steel guitar, it’ll mark Mascis’ first solo album that features full drum and electric leads, though still backed by some acoustic instrumentation that Dinosaur Jr. fans will find familiar. Pre-orders for physical copies are ongoing.
“When I’m writing for the band, I’m always trying to think of doing things [Dinosaur Jr. bandmates] Lou and Murph would fit into,” Mascis said of his creative process. “For myself, I’m thinking more about what...

Having already proven their bona fides with both 1986’s Evol and 1987’s Sister, Sonic Youth delivered their most cohesive, accessible album to date with their 1988 opus Daydream Nation. Originally inspired by the ferocity of hardcore punk, the cerebral art rock of acts like the Velvet Underground and Public Image Ltd., and the avant-garde compositions of Glenn Branca, the album saw the four New York bohos sweeten their no-wave edge with anthemic songwriting.
Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo’s detuned guitars strum plaintively and hypnotically as Daydream Nation slowly shakes itself awake on “Teen Age Riot.” Bassist-singer Kim Gordon channels the Stooges’s eerie chants on 1969’s “We Will Fall” and even cribs from its lyrics: “Spirit, desire/We will fall,” she mumbles before the song’s dual-guitar riff tears the track apart.

Here’s one for the ’90s indie rock lovers: The Breeders have shared “Divine Mascis,” a long-lost version of their Last Splash cut “Divine Hammer” that features Dinosaur Jr. axeman J Mascis on lead vocals. Check it out below.
You’d think Mascis would be playing guitar on the song, since he’s one of the most inventive and beloved players of the original indie rock scene. That’s what The Breeders expected, too, when they sent “Divine Hammer” to the artist way back in the day.
“At the time, J Mascis was a guitar god… we sent him the tape to put guitar on, so when it came back and he’s got rid of our voices and just put his vocal on, we were like, ‘Wha?!’” Kelley Deal told Uncut. “But it’s really cute. There’s a freshness to it, and it’s just so weird. I...

Man on Man, the duo comprised of Faith No More’s Roddy Bottum and his partner Joey Holman, have announced their sophomore album, Provincetown, due out July 16th via Polyvinyl Records. They also dropped the video for lead single “Showgirls.”
Much of Provincetown was written in the Massachusetts town that gives its namesake and where Bottum and Holman shared their first home together. For example, the noisy pop-punker “Showgirls” was inspired by a Provincetown variety show and sees Bottum and Holman trading off on vocals and guitar licks.
“As we lean into what Man on Man is and will be, two things immediately come up. Energy and community,” said Bottum in the press release. “’Showgirls’ is all that.”

The Hold Steady performed “Sideways Skull,” a track from their recently released The Price of Progress album, on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Wednesday.
Frontman Craig Finn peered out into the void while hectoring a typically verbose narrative about meeting another band, drinking Newcastle, accepting a woman’s schoolyard insult-flirts (“She’d like me better if I didn’t wear glasses”), and watching a band of burnouts in Beatle boots. About two-and-a-half minutes in, the throbbing bar-rock riffs give way to a quiet piano line before Finn & Co. wind things back up.

Dazy is the punky power-pop project of James Goodson, the Virginia-based musician who’s landed in our Song of the Week Honorable Mentions a couple of times. Only a few months after sharing Outofbody, his great debut album under the Dazy moniker, he’s returning with a surprise EP Otherbody, out now via Lame-o.
Dazy’s music is a hodgepodge of indie rock subgenres, spanning the sweeping hooks of Britpop classics, the whimsy of ’80s jangle pop, and the pleasantly caustic fuzz of ’90s shoegaze. The eight songs on Otherbody were recorded during the Outofbody sessions — which took place at Goodson’s home — and were mixed and mastered by Justin Pizzoferrato. The new EP is just the latest in Dazy’s ever-growing output since starting the project in 2020, and at just 20 minutes long, it’s one that goes down easy time and time again.
Otherbody EP is available to purchase on Bandcamp.

Who is Pictoria Vark? She’s the spoonerism who serves as a rock handle for rising songwriter Victoria Park. The 23-year-old Iowa City singer/bassist just made one of last year’s finest indie records with her breakthrough, The Parts I Dread. It’s a road trip of an album—it’s full of the places she’s lived and left behind, from suburban New Jersey to rural Wyoming, from Brooklyn streets to Iowa prairies. But her songs all share that nomadic sense of wandering. As Park says with a laugh,...

Sasami has shared an alternate version of her track “Tried to Understand,” featuring some bonus shredding from Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis.
This grungier take on “Tried to Understand” is vastly different from the one that appears on Sasami’s most recent album, Squeeze. The original, with its breezy acoustic guitar strum and country twang is — to borrow Sasami’s description to Rolling Stone earlier this year — “truly a fucking Sheryl Crow pop song.” But this new take is a fully electric blowout, with Mascis’ characteristically ferocious guitar work spiraling around Sasami’s cool vocals.

Compelling, breezy, and ultimately a little bit too-surface level, Philipp Reichenheim’s compact documentary “Freakscene: The Story of Dinosaur Jr.” is exactly what the title implies, an overview of the titular indie rock band that saw critical success in the ’80s and ’90s before imploding because of competing egos. Leaning more towards hagiography than tell-all, “Freakscene” does wisely allow the aging rockers — frontman J Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow, and drummer Murph — the time and space to discuss their formation and eventual dissolution, but the film is really framed around their 2005 reunion, which has lead to a seven-show run at the Bowery Ballroom and a steady output of albums including last years “Sweep It Into Space.”

Two premiere screenings of rock documentary Freakscene: The Story Of Dinosaur Jr
grossed over 19K this weekend with a single Saturday show at iconic music venue The Opera House in Williamsburg, Brooklyn taking in north of 17K. Independent distributor Utopia worked with Murmrr, which produces live music events, and art shingle Mondo, which created a limited edition poster only for sale in person.
Tickets ranged from 30 (balcony seating) to 50. The band’s frontman J Mascis played a solo set for the nearly sold-out 600-seat venue.
Utopia’s VP of marketing and distribution Kyle Greenberg said the audience was 65 male with a strong 35-44+ turnout, although there was no shortage of Utopia’s signature younger demos. The turnout was “a testament to Dinosaur Jr. ‘s impact, with the band also continuing to find new audiences on the heels of a new album and international tour ahead this summer.”

Dinosaur Jr. is one of the loudest and most dysfunctional rock bands still gracing stages today.
Movie goers will soon be able to watch the story of J Mascis and his band in a new feature documentary after Utopia picked up the rights.
Freakscene: The Story of Dinosaur Jr., which is directed Philipp Reichenheim, German filmmaker and J Mascis’ brother-in-law, will premiere in the States as part of a one-night-only special theatrical event release as well as a digital release.
The doc will tell the story of the “You’re Living All Over Me” rockers, founded by Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph in the mid-’80s, through to their reunion concert celebrating their 30th anniversary.
The band opened the doors for a slew of bands such as Nirvana as they turned up their Marshall stacks and punished audiences with their sludgy guitar solos.
