KiKi Layne, breakout of “If Beale Street Could Talk” and other indies, sings and performs in Nicole Riegel’s SXSW premiere “Dandelion” as a Cincinnati singer/songwriter in a downward spiral. IndieWire shares an exclusive first look at the film here ahead of its March 10 premiere in Austin at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival. Riegel previously directed 2021’s “Holler,” a blue-collar drama starring Jessica Barden.
Here’s the SXSW synopsis for “Dandelion”: “Dandelion, a struggling Cincinnati singer-songwriter in a downward spiral, takes a last-ditch-effort gig at a motorcycle rally in South Dakota where she meets Casey, a guitarist who walked away from his dream long ago. As Dandelion joins Casey’s nomadic group of struggling musicians, the kindred spirits make music together and strike up a whirlwind romance. Michael Imperioli (The White Lotus) is confirmed for a role in Academy Award nominee Paul Schrader’s new film Oh, Canada, Deadline has learned.
The actor joins an ensemble that includes Richard Gere, Jacob Elordi and Kristine Froseth.
An adaptation of the late Russell Banks’ 2021 novel Foregone, the film will tell the story of Leonard Fife (Gere), a famed documentary filmmaker who takes stock of his life, with not long to go after being stricken with cancer at 80 years old. The most unreliable of narrators — and of men — Fife offers the viewer a look at his home life, as a draft-dodging artist who abandoned one family for another, consistently evading any sense of responsibility for actions as he starts a new life in Canada.
Elordi plays a young Fife, seen from his late teens through his mid-20s, and Froseth shares 1968-set scenes with the Saltburn star as the character’s second wife,...

Season three of ‘American Horror Stories’ isn’t afraid to push some uncomfortable buttons, delivering some of its creepiest stories ever.
It can be increasingly easy to write off American Horror Stories, especially when a middling season of American Horror Story proper is currently airing. American Horror Stories began with a rocky start that was too indebted to the franchise’s past. However, it’s gradually become an underrated destination for heightened, campy tales of terror that aren’t bogged down by the plotting and structural issues that so-often hurt American Horror Story’s seasonal narratives. Not only is American Horror Stories’ third season a consistent batch of terrifying tales, but it also contains some of its best work.
“Bestie” is one of American Horror Stories’ strongest episodes and exactly the type of tale that this series should be telling. It’s an incredibly uncomfortable experience, from start to finish,...

FX released the official trailer for “American Horror Stories” Season 3, the spin-off of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s anthology series “American Horror Story.” The spin-off features a different horror story in each episode.
The trailer revealed that “Real Housewives” alum Lisa Rinna will star in the “Tapeworm” episode of Season 3, which premieres Oct. 26. The official logline for that installment reads, “An up-and-coming model will stop at nothing in her hunger for success.” The episode was written by Joe Baken and directed by Alexis Martin Woodall.
“Smize for the camera, sweetie,” Rinna’s character says in the trailer. She later responds to a young patient’s concern about a monster inside of her with the question, “But are you hungry?”
Alongside Rinna, the “Tapeworm” cast includes Laura Kariuki, Hazel Graye and Rob Yang.
From the trailer, it looks like Yang prescribes Kariuki’s model a tapeworm to help her lose weight for her modeling career.

There’s probably a clever German word invented to describe the increasingly common and frustrating act of spending an entire evening indecisively flicking through Netflix arguing about what to watch before just giving up and going to bed. The streaming giant has over 7,000 titles on its UK version alone, so you can be forgiven for feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all, and its recent tendency to cancel beloved Netflix Originals – some would say too soon – can leave you wondering where best to commit your time.

What makes us care about the characters in a television show? It’s a strange relationship we have with them, an unfamiliarity that turns into something akin to family. Soon enough, you’re a Soprano or a Simpson, part of the Brady bunch or in with the Ewing clan. And then TV can play its great emotional trick: it can put these characters through tragedy and triumph, and make the viewer feel that it’s theirs. This is the well-worn pathway that You & Me, the new Itvx three-part drama, forswears. Instead, we are dropped into a world and asked to care, straight away, when things begin in media misery.

Like all the films of Yorgos Lanthimos, "The Lobster" left me completely cold when I first saw it -- he's clearly one of the most original directors around, but my more optimistic outlook clashed with his bleak view of humanity. The film made far more cruel sense when I became single again after 21 years. Tucked away in a long-term relationship, I suppose I was cozily insulated from the horrors of dating and the pressure society places on people to be with someone. Nobody wants to be the crazy cat person, right?
The Twin Towers were still standing the last time I was actively seeking a partner, so I'm a long way away from wanting to date again. Still, those pressures that regularly cast single people as loners or weirdos have compelled me to check out Tinder to see what all the fuss is about. It really is as horrible as...

Netflix’s thriller Pieces of Her is based on a novel by the aptly named best selling author Karin Slaughter. Though it’s set in America, the whole of the series was shot in Australia with the majority of filming taking place in 2021, and many of the cast are Antipodeans and Brits as well as Americans.
It’s a twisty tale of a mother who carries out an act of bravery which suddenly exposes her to a world she had long since left behind, and a daughter who discovers she really doesn’t know her mum at all. Pay attention! But in case you’re distracted by the niggling sense of ‘where do a recognise them from?’ we’re here to remind you.

David Cronenbeg’s 2005 film “A History of Violence” entwines itself around a nasty little premise. Tom Stall (played by Viggo Mortenson) is a family man, living in a small town, when one day, a couple of gruff outsiders try to rob his diner. In an instant, the quiet and calm everyman suddenly morphs into a lethal killer. His heroics save lives and earn a bit of media attention, but rather than savor his moment in the sun, Tom is concerned. His wife, Edie (Maria Bello), wonders why — until a gangster (Ed Harris) comes calling, alleging that Tom isn’t Tom at all, but a hitman named Joey Cusack who disappeared years ago under suspicious circumstances.
From there, Edie’s perception of Tom starts to shift, and the film’s shifts with her. Her husband’s once serene identity is streaked in danger; a danger that only grows as his past comes to light.

Mystery and violence take center stage in the Netflix adaptation of Karin Slaughter's "Pieces of Her," but one key character leaves us with more questions than answers by the season finale. "Pieces of Her" tells the story of a mother named Laura Oliver (Toni Collette), whose daughter, Andy (Bella Heathcote), is forced into hiding after a string of violent attacks on her birthday. Frightened, Andy drives across the country to evade the police. Along the way, she uncovers shocking clues that reveal a sinister connection between her mother and a man named Nick Harp (Joe Dempsie) who may be responsible for an infamous murder.
How Does Laura Meet Nick?
Told in part through flashbacks, "Pieces of Her" illustrates Laura's life long before Andy is born, when her name is Jane Queller (Jessica Barden) and she is the only daughter of a wealthy business mogul named Martin Queller (Terry O'Quinn...

The always impressive Toni Collette plays another fierce, complicated woman in the eight-part series, Pieces of Her, adapted from Kim Slaughter’s 2018 bestseller. She’s small-town mom Laura Oliver, whose secret criminal past catches up with her. In the premiere, Laura saves her 30-year-old daughter, Andy (Bella Heathcote), and others from a violent attack at a restaurant. She’s hailed as a hero, but the subsequent media attention allows very dangerous people from Laura’s life to track her down. (Credit: Mark Rogers/Netflix) “She has felt trapped her whole life,” Collette says. When the truth starts to come out, Laura “has the opportunity to find real personal freedom.” But Andy feels betrayed by her mother’s lies, and subsequently puts herself in danger puzzling together past events. Flashbacks show the 19-year-old Laura’s (Jessica Barden) simmering rebellion against her controlling father (Terry O’Quinn) — which leads to a tragedy involving domestic terrorists.

You think you’ve got mother-daughter problems – but no! Aimless 30-year-old Andy Oliver (Bella Heathcoate), who shelved her New York dreams to return to small-town Georgia to nurse her mother, Laura Oliver (Toni Collette), through breast cancer, appears at first to have the usual issues. Post-op Laura pushes her daughter to leave the nest again and become an autonomous adult, and mopey stuck-in-a-rut aspiring artist Andy resists. Par for the course.
What upends it all? To celebrate Andy’s 30th birthday, Laura takes her out to lunch and a new round of nagging when all hell breaks loose. In a bravura set piece that recalls the crazy museum bombing that launches Donna Tartt’s “The Goldfinch,” a spurned boyfriend enters the mall restaurant, shoots his ex-girlfriend who’s leaving him for med school and keeps firing. Blood simple, he targets Andy, who’s wearing her police uniform from her night job answering 911 calls.

Exclusive: Stampede Ventures has acquired the rights to Nick Schenk’s action spec script Galahad, and is beginning to package it as a film, eyeing A-list directors for the first feature in a potential new franchise.
The film will follow a badass ex-American special forces soldier who goes on a berserker, come-hell-or-high-water mission to avenge the death of an innocent woman. The quest will take him into the depths of modern American military supremacy, and its sometimes awful shadow. Stampede’s founder and CEO Greg Silverman will produce alongside Jon Berg.
“Once again, Nick’s talent is on full display,” said Silverman. “He crafts a script that gives fans of the genre traditionally awesome moments, while pushing forward spectacular revisions of those same traditions. It’s the perfect balance of what audiences want to see, and what they’ve never seen before.”

Pieces of Her is poised to be one of the most talked about shows of 2022.
Netflix on Tuesday dropped a thrilling trailer for the Toni Collette-fronted drama series, and we're excited.
The trailer asks a very valid question:
What would you do if your mother was not who you thought she was?
“There are just some things you don’t understand,” Laura (Collette) warns in the clip.
The big hook is that Collette's character reacts to a sudden act of violence, setting off a chain of events that nobody could have imagined.
It has a very Ozark feel about it, and given that the fellow Netflix hit is ending, this could be a worthy successor.
The trailer also boasts that the show came from the people who made Big Little Lies and The Undoing, so we're inclined to believe this will be yet another hit for the streaming service.

It’s been another strange year. Perhaps more so than ever, the way films have been released has been in a confusing state of flux. What’s coming to cinemas? If it makes it how many screenings will it actually have? What’s going to which streaming service, and when? There have been a lot of excellent movies released in 2021, but sifting through them has been challenging, even if you’re doing your best to keep up.

Greece’s Argonauts Productions has boarded “Forough: A Lonely Woman,” a biopic about iconoclastic Persian poet Forough Farrokhzad by BAFTA-nominated director Tina Gharavi (“I Am Nasrine”), ahead of its presentation in the co-production forum of Rome’s Mia market.
The film follows the short and controversial life of Farrokhzad, a feminist icon who in the 1950s and ‘60s found a way to tell her story in an Iranian society not yet ready for the uncomfortable truths of female desire and ambition.
Gharavi described the modernist poet as “our Sylvia Plath” and drew a comparison to another feminist artist and icon, calling Farrokhzad “as important [to Iranian culture] as Frida Kahlo is to Mexico.”
“Like her, she was a revolutionary,” she said. “Culturally, Forough was this luminary, an independent woman, very advanced for her times, an exquisite poet.” Farrokhzad challenged the traditional norms and structures of Persian poetry while also living an openly promiscuous life,...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review on the new film “Holler,” an IFC Films new release about a brother and sister trying to survive in a dying factory town. In select theaters and through Video On Demand beginning June 11th, 2021.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Holler involves a family anchored by a brother named Blaze (Gus Halper) and a sister named Ruth (Jessica Barden). They live in a Southern Ohio town that is slowly dying, with no jobs and no future. Ruth is a math whiz, so much so that Blaze convinces her to apply to college, and she’s accepted. But Ruth is also conflicted about leaving, having begun a new job with Blaze collecting scrap metal – often stolen from from local shutdown factories – and not wanting to abandon her mother (Pamela Adlon), who is doing time in drug rehab. Will Ruth stay or will she go now?

Produced by the Lutheran Society at a point in Romero’s career post-Night of the Living Dead and pre-Dawn that saw the infamous horror director in a period of commercial and critical decline, The Amusement Park is a damning, if not exactly horrifying, condemnation of the ways in which society marginalizes and others its elderly. – Christian G.
