In today’s film news roundup, “The Trip to Greece” will be released on May 22, Easter weekend will see a TV release of Fathom Events’ “Jesus,” and a Mary Pickford project is in the works.
‘The Trip’ Returns
IFC Films has set a May 22 digital and on demand release for the Steve Coogan-Rob Brydon comedy “The Trip to Greece,” the third sequel in director Michael Winterbottom’s travel series.
The trailer, released Wednesday, shows the duo retracing Odysseus’s footsteps in only six days with stops at the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, the Ancient Agora of Athens, the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, the island of Hydra, the Caves of Diros and Niokastro Fortress in Pylos. There are also the trademark celebrity impressions — Marlon Brando and Sean Connery in the new iteration — plus gourmet meals and plenty of barbed commentary, such as Coogan asserting that he’s gotten better looking with age.

Girls on Film is a weekly column that tackles anything and everything pertaining to women and cinema. It can be found here every Thursday night, and be sure to follow the Girls on Film Twitter Feed for additional femme-con. For all of her many gender-defying achievements, Mary Pickford is often forgotten during discourse about Hollywood’s early days. Most discussion seems to revolve around the talent of Charlie Chaplin, the controversy that cloaks D.W. Griffith’s Birth of a Nation, and the swashbuckling fervor of Douglas Fairbanks. She is but a footnote, a woman whose achievements rest outside the public consciousness. Jennifer DeLia’s upcoming biopic, The First, might change that – a film striving to follow the actress’ life from a poor Canadian...

When Jennifer DeLia was doing post-production on her last feature, "Billy Bates," she had a meeting in Toronto's Lighbox movie theater. After the meeting, DeLia walked into an exhibit that explored the life of Mary Pickford, widely acknowledged as Hollywood's first movie star. It was then that DeLia, who had only a passing knowledge of Pickford's role in film history, decided that a film of her life needed to be made. "I didn't know that Pickford was the pioneer that she was and that she had the journey from childhood that she had," DeLia says now. "I knew she was a silent screen legend and the first movie star. I didn't realize that she had helped make Hollywood culture as a fierce businesswoman." The film, titled "The First" and based on Eileen Whitfield's biography "Pickford: The Woman Who Made Hollywood," is currently in development. Jennifer DeLia is directing the film from Josh Fagin’s script, itself adapted from Eileen Whitfield’s biography Pickford: The Woman Who Made Hollywood.Born in Toronto as Gladys Marie Smith, Pickford’s life was certainly an interesting one. An actor in plays and musicals from an early age, she nearly gave up on her aspirations when the family suffered six impoverished years on the road. Jude Law as Douglas Fairbanks? It’s hard to imagine the cool and aloof (and blue-eyed blond) Law playing Fairbanks, the ever-smiling, ever-bouncing, swarthy hero of silent era blockbusters such as The Three Musketeers, Robin Hood, and The Thief of Bagdad. But stranger things have happened: I’d never have imagined Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe, but that didn’t prevent Williams from earning excellent reviews, critics’ awards, and an Oscar nod for her performance in Simon Curtis’ My Week with Marilyn. Anyhow, according to Forbes magazine, Poverty Row Entertainment producers Jennifer DeLia and Julie Pacino (Al Pacino’s daughter) want Jude Law to play opposite Lily Rabe‘s Mary Pickford in their upcoming Pickford biopic, which DeLia is set to direct. Fairbanks and Pickford, the King and Queen of Hollywood, were married in 1920. It was fairy-tale marriage — at least as far as the fan magazines were concerned. Away from the cameras and the press,...

I am fanatically devoted to silent film, not exactly because of their the plots or set designs, but because of the way the transformed the entertainment and film industry. So when I heard that Jennifer DeLia and Julie Pacino were beginning work on a biopic of America’s Sweetheart, Mary Pickford, I quickly became excited. The film [...]

Just a few weeks ago, we reported that producers Jennifer DeLia and Julie Pacino were working on the upcoming biopic of silent era movie star Mary Pickford. They’ve now secured a leading lady — Lily Rabe (American Horror Story) — and spent their time in Cannes searching for actors to play the various men in her life.
According to Forbes (via ThePlaylist), the producers have been swept away by Jude Law, whom they want to play the role of Pickford‘s husband and silent movie star Douglas Fairbanks. He was known for playing his swashbuckling roles in films such as, The Thief of Bagdad, Robin Hood as well as The Mark of Zorro. The pair were married in 1920, until their divorce in 1936. Law will just need to add a thin mustache in order to resemble the actor who was once dubbed “The King of Hollywood.”

Update: A previous version of this article incorrectly said that Jonathan Demme was being considered as the film's director. The post has been updated to reflect that change. There are hundreds and thousands of stars who have risen to huge heights in Hollywood only to be totally forgotten, but perhaps none more significantly overlooked than Mary Pickford. Though plenty of people can probably name her contemporaries like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, Pickford-- the first female movie star to become a mogul in her own right-- is known mostly to lovers of old films, and her movies are rarely revisited as often as, say, The Gold Rush. But Pickford's story remains fascinating no matter how much you know about her, and an upcoming biopic is looking to tell it. Now they're looking to add a little modern-day starpower to help guarantee some eyeballs. According to Forbes, producers Jennifer DeLia and...

If you either recognize Lily Rabe as the tortured Nora Montgomery from American Horror Story or Deborah Lehrman from All Good Things, there’s no denying that she has an uncanny resemblance to the legendary actress Mary Pickford. This resemblance hasn’t gone unnoticed, seeing as Variety has just reported that the actress will be playing Pickford in an upcoming biopic we reported on just a few weeks ago.

Lily Rabe has been cast to play Mary Pickford in an untitled film about the actress's life, and producers are currently taking meetings about additional casting at the Cannes Film Festival. With the movers and shakers of the industry all in one place, Poverty Row Entertainment, headed by Julie Pacino and Jennifer DeLia, have decided to start taking casting considerations for five key roles: Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Charlotte Hennessy, Frances Marion, and D.W. Griffith. According to director DeLia, Rabe was chosen after they saw her perform on stage."Like Lily, Mary Pickford's inner-fabric was made up in big part by her experiences with live performances in the theatre," DeLia said. "For the role, we knew that we wanted someone who embodied those same qualities and who has truly experienced that seamless crossover as an actress." The movie, which will be the first major feature film about Mary Pickford's life,...

Perhaps the first real movie star, Mary Pickford got her start in the moving pictures back in 1909. She was 17 at the time, and the rest of her life would be dedicated to the crafts of acting, writing and producing. She’s probably best remembered for her starring role in Coquette, for which she won the Oscar in 1929. Of course, it helps that she was a founder of the Academy. According to Collider, Poverty Row Entertainment is going to give this titan her due. The production house acquired rights to “Pickford: The Woman Who Made Hollywood” by Eileen Whitfield, and they’ve put together a team of director Jennifer DeLia (Billy Bates, I Am an Island) and writer Josh Fagin. It’s fantastic to see something like this being made, and it fits perfectly into a new mode where filmmakers are highly interested in other filmmakers. Now, who do you get to play her?...

If you’ve taken a film history class or two, chances are you’ve heard of Mary Pickford. The Canadian actress was vital in crafting the Hollywood we have today, co-founding United Artists. She was briefly brought to screen in Chaplin with Robert Downey Jr., but now she’s about to get her proper due in her own biopic.
Deadline reports that Julie Pacino, daughter of the famous actor, will produce with Jennifer DeLia an adaptation of Eileen Whitfield’s book Pickford: The Woman Who Made Hollywood. DeLia, who last helmed the drama Billy Bates, would direct from Josh Fagin‘s script. I’m curious of the talent involved as they haven’t made anything worthwhile yet, but hopefully they’ll do justice to this icon.

Late acting legend Mary Pickford is returning to the big screen as the subject of a new biopic produced by Al Pacino's daughter.
Producers at Poverty Row Entertainment have won the rights to Eileen Whitfield's biography Pickford: The Woman Who Made Hollywood, and now studio bosses are hoping to recreate the Pollyanna star's life story in a new movie about her career and marriage to screen idol Douglas Fairbanks.
A statement released by company executives Julie Pacino and Jennifer DeLia reads, "With no intention of creating a conventional biopic, we will use the language of film to hopscotch through time, in order to tell the story of a woman so ahead of her time who was living one of the most romantic love stories of all-time.
"Mary Pickford's story is one of intense emotion, astute intuition, dedicated artistry, and about the creation of Hollywood."
Pacino and DeLia, who will direct the film, are hoping to sell the project to financiers at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival in France.
Casting has yet to be announced.

In 1919, a group of artists united to form an American film studio called United Artists. Among them were D.W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and a curly-haired silent film star named Mary Pickford. The Canadian-American actress, whose career spanned decades, from silent films to the talkies, went on to achieve a kind of global fame that, for a time anyway, wasn't common, to say the least. And she was referred to as "America's Sweetheart." Between her contributions to the film industry, including co-founding the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and her personal life, which included three marriages (one of which was to Douglas Fairbanks), there's likely plenty of story to tell in a biopic. We may find out soon enough. Deadline reports that Julie Pacino and Jennifer DeLia's Poverty Row Entertainment, along with producer Said Zahraoui have picked up the rights to adapt Eileen Whitfield's book Pickford:...
