Herman Yao’s latest film, Moscow Mission, chronicled a group of brave detectives who were sent to Moscow to eradicate a group of dangerous train robbers who had been terrorizing the trans-Siberian railway. The eyewitnesses claimed that the robbers often boarded the train disguised as regular passengers, sometimes individually or in groups. Once the train left the station, they donned their signature ski masks and robbed the entire train at gunpoint. Those who cooperated were left to see another day, while others became victims of their wrath. Once they were done, they pulled the chain and made their exit.
Spoilers Ahead
How does Cui Zhenhai plan to catch the robbers?
The latest robbery jeopardized the trade between Russia and China and even tarnished the latter’s reputation on a global scale. Since the robbers were a grave threat to both domestic and international travelers, the Chinese government brought in the big guns.

Patriotic titles continue to lead the China box office, with historical drama 1921 coming in second.

John Woo’s first contemporary action film produced in Asia for more than 20 years falls woefully short of the director’s best work. Shot entirely in Japan with a mostly local crew, Man Hunt pairs Zhang Hanyu and Masaharu Fukuyama as reluctant allies in a corporate conspiracy thriller involving an Osakan pharmaceutical giant. The heavyweight international cast, which also includes Jun Kunimura and South Korean actress Ha Ji-won, are forced to communicate in English for large portions of the film, which only accentuates an unintentionally hilarious script from no less than seven credited writers. Shot in a flat, lifeless fashion, Man Hunt often resembles a made-for-television pastiche of Woo’s style, edited so sloppily that even the film’s best action sequences are rendered dull and incoherent. ...

Good LuckDear Danny and Fernando, This is my first time at Tiff! It is also my first time stepping foot on Canadian soil. These aren't first steps so much as limps, since I sprained my ankle two weeks ago. The escalators and streetcars have become some of my best friends here, and every time I sit in the theatre I'm filled with relief. An American friend of mine who accompanies me on this trip remarks that nearly everything Tiff-branded is likely state-funded, or invested in by some greater entities with large stakes involved. As you've both noted, this festival is an institution upheld by discrepancies. I certainly felt it when I was on my way back from a certain thriller about ex-pats in Thai cults and noticed a group of Lady Gaga fans in matching t-shirts celebrating the release of her Netflix documentary. But since I'm already exhausted by film festival gossip masked as dialectics,...

Something must have happened to John Woo in the last decade or so. It’s been well over a decade since his last full-blown, modern-day action film, having made the historical epics Red Cliff and The Crossing after leaving Hollywood, and Manhunt — his return to the genre that launched his career — feels like a new kind of John Woo. Now in his 70s, Woo has become fully self-aware, and in doing so seems to have challenged himself to create the most John Woo movie ever made. With Manhunt, he has indeed made the most John Woo movie possible, while also making a film that could just be described as “the most.” It’s a deliriously entertaining thrill ride from start to end, and sure to go down as one of the most enjoyable films of 2017.

John Woo heads back to Hard Boiled and The Killer territory with Manhunt. Here's the trailer...
Director John Woo is heading somewhere back near his roots for his new film, a cop thriller by the name of Manhunt. It’s a remake of a 1976 Japanese movie, and it sees Zhang Hanyu playing a prosecutor wrongly framed for a number of crimes, and subsequently fighting to clear his name.
Also in the cast for this one are Masahuru Fukuyama, Qi Wei and Ha Ji Won. It can’t just be us hoping that the end result of this is something akin to Woo’s early classics, The Killer and Hard Boiled (and if you've not seen either of those films, lord do you have some treats ahead of you).

He's back!! Media Asia has debuted a new international trailer for John Woo's latest action film Manhunt, being described as a return to his action roots in the vein of his 1989 classic The Killer. Let's hope that's all true, because we haven't really seen a great action movie from John Woo in a while. Manhunt is about an innocent prosecutor who sets out on a mission to clear his name after being framed for crimes he didn't commit. Zhang Hanyu stars as the prosecutor, and the cast includes Masaharu Fukuyama, Qi Wei, and Ha Ji Won. This is actually a remake of the 1976 Japanese film Kimi yo Fundo no Kawa o Watare. I'll be seeing this at the Venice Film Festival when it premieres there in a few weeks. The footage in this trailer looks very weird like it's straight from the 90s, but here's to hoping Woo is...

The 74th Venice International Film Festival (August 30 – September 9) has just announced the world premiere of John Woo’s action thriller Manhunt as part of its Out of Competition roster. The film is hotly anticipated as it marks the return of the Hong Kong director to the police thriller genre 25 years after his classic Hard Boiled, starring Chow Yun-fat, Tony Leung and Anthony Wong.
Set in Japan, Manhunt is the story of a Chinese man wrongly convicted for rape and multiple murders. He becomes the target of a manhunt by the local Japanese police, while he sets out himself to find the real killers.
The film has Chinese star Zhang Hanyu (The Great Wall, Operation Mekong) and Japanese actor-musician Masaharu Fukuyama (Suspect X, Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends) in the lead roles. The predominantly Japanese supporting cast includes Yasuaki Kurata, Jun Kunimura, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, Nanami Sakuraba, Naoto Takenaka and Tao Okamoto.

Magnificent, breath-taking spectacle. A glorious, gorgeous testament to mankind’s creativity. Looks really good in 3D. All of this and more can be used to describe The Great Wall of China. The Great Wall of filmmaker Zhang Yimou, however, is another thing entirely.
Following the intense furore surrounding the creation and marketing of The Great Wall, the film itself is here for all to see and judge. Erasure? White saviour trope: the movie? The Great Wall of China with a coat of whitewashing? As it turns out, not quite, but that’s not to say the movie is without its problems.
The great face of The Great Wall’s controversies is Matt Damon, cast as brooding mercenary William Garin.

There is a thrilling selection of Chinese-language titles at Filmart this year. Liz Shackleton picks out some of the most promising.
With very few Hong Kong or mainland Chinese sellers making the journey to this year’s European Film Market in Berlin, Filmart offers a chance for buyers to catch up with the Chinese-language titles that will be rolled out in the region for the rest of the year.
After serving up the biggest film of the Chinese New Year holiday — Kung Fu Yoga, starring Jackie Chan and directed by Stanley Tong — China’s Sparkle Roll Media has launched a Hong Kong-based sales arm that is selling Ding Sheng’s reboot of the A Better Tomorrow series.
Other high-profile action titles new to market include Distribution Workshop’s Extraordinary Mission, from the creative teams behind the Infernal Affairs and Overheard series, and Huayi Brothers’ crime drama Explosion, starring Duan Yihong.

Chicago – Taking a concept higher than the Wall that inspired it, and mostly succeeding, “The Great Wall” gets a nod as one of the oddest stories in a long time. Pre-supposedly based on a “legend,” it brings Matt Damon into ancient China to help battle lizard monsters at the Great Wall. Book it.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
What makes it work is that it has a “Treasure of Sierra Madre” element to it, that the white European mercenaries are there to get the “black powder,’ the just invented and explosive gunpowder. The raid by the lizard monsters is something out of 1950s sci-fi – they are Creature-from-the-Black-Lagoon like – and would have been better if they didn’t look so cartoony. When I see 10,000 of those beasties coming at me down the valley I don’t care what Great Wall is protecting me, I’m outta there. Matt Damon, however, stays, and despite his character...

Visionary Chinese director Yimou Zhang has delivered a rousing take on the venerable traditions of the monster movie. Though promoted as a historical epic, The Great Wall is a B-movie at heart, and it’s a lot of fun. The story opens in the Gobi Desert in Northern China in the 17th century as soldiers-for-hire William Garin (Matt Damon) and Pero Tovar (Pedro Pascal) are searching for gunpowder when they are attacked by an unseen creature whose paw they manage to lop off. The pair then arrive at a military post on the Great Wall and are captured by the Nameless Order, an army led by General Shao (Zhang Hanyu) and his right-hand gal Lin Mae (Jing Tian). Impressed by Will’s archery skills, the Generals recruit him to help battle the Tao Tei, thousands of ferocious beasties that rise from the nearby Jade Mountain every 60 years to wipe out...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Plain pure fun. At its best, it’s Lord of the Rings meets Aliens, with incredible imaginative grandeur and genuinely breathtaking 3D depth. I’m “biast” (pro): love a good fantasy action movie
I’m “biast” (con): was worried about the apparent whitewashing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
The Great Wall, set somewhere around a thousand years ago, opens with a rather incongruous zoom in from orbit down onto that impressive structure. Nobody was watching from up there back then, but it’s kind of a joke, I guess, a reference to the not-true “fact” that the wall is the only human-made object visible from space.
Also not true: Matt Damon’s whiteness blinds the viewer to the Chinese-ness of The Great Wall.
On the scale of how badly it could have gone, what we ended up with is fairly inoffensive.

When I think about China’s Song dynasty, the first thing that comes to mind is Matt Damon. You too, right? A movie like The Great Wall is just screaming for a “William” to save the day, because native warriors surely can’t fend for themselves (duh). A little whitewashing, a dash of CGI monsters and voilà! You’ve got yourself a generic slash-em-up atop, in front of and behind China’s most wondrous landmark. Director Yimou Zhang splatters rocky landscapes with colorful costumes and fiery explosions, but it’s not enough to salvage snooze-worthy drama whenever characters start to jabber. Did you expect something more than swift monster mutilation? I seriously hope not, you crazy loon.
Damon’s William is but a weary mercenary looking for some magical weapon known as “black powder.” The Chinese possess it, so he sets out with a party to “barter.” After a harsh spell of travel,...

First, there was that inexplicable half-hour climax in “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” which exported the entire cast to Beijing. Now, Matt Damon’s battling mystical forces in medieval China. Hollywood and China’s terminally awkward shotgun wedding continues with “The Great Wall,” a clunky, effects-riddled blockbuster in which a humorless Damon joins forces with major Chinese director Zhang Yimou for a project that suits neither of their talents. There’s little need for good performances or filmmaking when every scene has been calculated to serve the bottom line.
Assailed in the West for presenting a white savior at the center of an Asian cast, the movie’s racial violations aren’t as egregious as some early critics claimed. Instead, the bland story finds Damon and two other white actors surrounded by a largely Asian cast in a Chinese-approved adventure (where it’s already generating strong, though not blockbuster, box office...

The Great Wall movie with Matt Damon: awkward-accented British mercenary fights the Taotie in costly Chinese-American collaboration. 'The Great Wall' movie: Zhang Yimou-Matt Damon collaboration evidence that – for better or for worse – countries can work together In this divisive age, when countries are turning inward with a nationalist, xenophobic fervor, it's comforting to know that the United States and China, their relationship mercurial and wary, can work together and, in the spirit of cooperation and unity, make a terrible movie. A co-production between Legendary East (the Chinese arm of Burbank, California-based, Legendary Entertainment) and China Film Group, The Great Wall is reportedly the most expensive film ever shot in China, a nation with aspirations to make films that rival Hollywood in their scope and success. Hollywood is willing to help if it ultimately leads to the release of more of its films in the tightly controlled Chinese market,...

Throughout his decorated cinematic career, Matt Damon has uncovered global conspiracies, sabotaged interstellar pursuits, and grown potatoes on Mars – and that’s just scratching the surface. But for his latest gig, it’s fair to say Damon is venturing into uncharted territory with The Great Wall, Zhang Yimou’s wildly ambitious monster movie that’s set to become the most expensive film production in Chinese history. No pressure, then.

Legendary Pictures' upcoming fantasy epic The Great Wall looks like a visually stunning and awesome film. I'm really excited about seeing it. The story was inspired by the construction of The Great Wall of China, and it involves an army of warriors battling giant creatures.

Legendary Comics has announced that they will be releasing a prequel graphic novel that tells the events leading up to what the film entails. They also shared the cover for the comic created by Whilce Portacio.
The graphic novel was written by Arvid Nelson and artist Gian Fernando, and they offered the following synopsis in the press release:

"There are many things you have not seen." Like a 9 minute long trailer? This is pretty epic. An extended Chinese trailer has debuted for the Chinese epic The Great Wall, from director Zhang Yimou. The film is set to open in China this December, which is why this seems like a massive marketing push even though it doesn't open in the Us until February. This features footage from other trailers at the opening and closing, and spends six minutes in the middle introducing the five different main Chinese characters. Matt Damon stars as one of the few white dudes; also starring Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, Andy Lau, Tian Jing, Eddie Peng, Numan Acar, Han Lu, Kenny Lin, Zhang Hanyu. This looks colorful and entertaining. Here's the new extended 9-minute Chinese trailer for Zhang Yimou's The Great Wall, from YouTube: You can still see the first teaser trailer for Yimou's The Great Wall here,...

A 9 minute Chinese trailer has been released for Matt Damon's upcoming fantasy action film The Great Wall. I don't recall ever seeing a 9 minute trailer before! It's obviously loaded with tons of new footage, and this movie looks like it's going to be a crazy fun epic! The visuals of this film look freakin' stunning!
The trailer spends a good amount of time introducing us to five of the main Chinese characters in the film. I have no idea what the trailer is saying, but I still enjoyed watching it.
The story was inspired by the construction of The Great Wall of China, but there's a whole cool fantasy element to it that involves an army of warriors battling giant creatures.
The Great Wall tells the story of an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure.
The film was directed by Zhang Yimou (Hero,...

As the most expensive feature film in China’s history, it’s almost appropriate that The Great Wall, Zhang Yimou’s eye-popping monster movie, gets a super-sized international trailer. It’s just shy of nine minutes in length and, unsurprisingly, crams in a staggering amount of new and fantastical footage.
Marking the English-language debut for Yimou, this exhaustive sizzle reel begins by focusing on Matt Damon’s adventurer, who wanders onto these lands in search of an elusive gunpowder. Flanked by Willem Dafoe and Pedro Pascal, he then stumbles upon The Great Wall, a sky-scrapping fortification built not to fend off northern invaders, but to safeguard China and its people from mythical beasts known as the Taotie. What follows is a closer look at the movie’s lavish action sequences, not to mention how each color-coded faction plays into the overarching narrative.

It’s a great time for Chinese cinema with homegrown productions dominating the local box office.
Action thriller “Operation Mekong” won the box office charts with $77 million in sales during the national weeklong holiday, according to the film industry-consulting firm Artisan Gateway.
In the second spot was Yibai Zhang’s romantic comedy “I Belonged to You”. Stop motion film “L.O.R.D.: Legend of Ravaging Dynasties” by Jingming Guo placed Number 3 in the box office. Jing Wong’s action comedy “Mission Milano” followed in fourth place. “The Wild Life” is the only non-Chinese movie that made the top five.
Operation Mekong conquered all these films thanks to its nationalistic theme and its action guru director Dante Lam of “Beast Stalker” and “That Demon Within” fame.
La Times praised the filmmaker saying “(Dante) Lam packs the movie with white-knuckle action sequences, set in eye-catching locations, teeming with extras.”

The movie production shot scenes in China, Thailand and Myanmar. This is the third time Eddie Peng and director Dante Lam are working together. They have previously teamed up in “Unbreakable” and “Fore” with great results.

The Great Wall is Zhang Yimou’s ( House of Flying Draggers, Hero ) first English language film, and he’s really going all out with this one !
At a reported cost of over $130 million this will be China’s most expensive movie to date with an all star international cast to match lead by Hollywood star Matt Damon , and Hong Kong Superstar Andy Lau
Revolving around the majestic Great Wall, the film mashes elements from science fiction and history as it sets up its characters in 15th century China. Where’s the sci-fi in that, you ask? Well, apparently, the “real” reason the Wall was erected is a large-scale, unrecorded invasion of giant mythical creatures—aliens, perhaps?
In this grievous battle against the supernatural, humankind opted to fortify its defenses with a massive wall that will keep their enemies at bay as the most elite forces create a strategy that will...
