The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) unveiled its first wave of 60 selections on Monday, July 24. The slate includes 37 world premieres, seven international openings and 12 North American debuts and will be held September 7 – 17, 2023. See the full lineup of films (so far) below.
Among the standouts is “The Holdovers,” a caustic Christmas comedy from “About Schmidt” and “Sideways” writer-director Alexander Payne. Pundits expect the film could emerge from the festival as a major Oscar player in several races, including Best Picture. Craig Gillespie’s “Dumb Money,” a retelling of the GameStop short squeeze starring Paul Dano, and David Yates’ “Pain Hustlers,” a pharma satire with Emily Blunt, could land two previously overlooked actors their first Oscar spotlight.

All film festivals face a challenged season ahead as most onscreen talent will be forced to sit this one out due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Just last week, MGM and Luca Guadagnino yanked “Challengers” from the Venice opening night slot and shifted the movie entirely to April of next year.
But the Toronto International Film Festival forges ahead with a nevertheless starry lineup this year of 60 films across the Galas and Special Presentations sections, as announced Monday morning. The festival has not made an opening night selection but has so far also programmed Taika Waititi’s “Next Goal Wins” and Ladj Ly’s “Les Indésirables.”

The biopic based on the life of prominent human rights activist, Jaswant Singh Khalra has been subjected to delays owing to the clearance for the censor certificate. The makers of the film moved the Bombay High Court and asked for legal intervention.
The yet-to-be-titled film, which is directed by Honey Trehan, and headlined by actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh, has hit the roadblock and the makers have sought legal help from the court.
Following Operation Blue Star, the assassination of Indira Gandhi, and the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots, the police were empowered to detain anyone as suspected terrorists. The police were accused of killing unarmed suspects in staged shootouts, and burning thousands of dead bodies to cover up the murders.
Jaswant Singh Khalra was the director of a bank in Amritsar during the militancy period in Punjab. He found the evidence of abduction, elimination and cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies by the police.

There used to be this breed called star secretaries. Now, they have been replaced by casting agents or talent managers. You must have seen what a secretary’s job was; just maintaining a star’s date diary and face the producer’s music when the dates needed to be cancelled and when it came to asking for payments!
Asrani plays a secretary who manages the affairs of first, Amitabh Bachchan, and later, Jaya Bhaduri, in the film ‘Abhimaan’ (1973). But the star secretary as projected in ‘Abhiman’ was straightforward, very businesslike, one busy with a fading singer husband and the rising singing star, and balancing their competing egos.
That is not what the real-life star secretaries were really like. They would not survive in the business if they were anything like Asrani in the film. The secretaries of the big stars were exclusive – they attended to just one star. Then there...

Passport
U.K. broadcasters Channel 4, ITV, BBC, Stv, UKTV, S4C and Paramount U.K. have teamed to create access and inclusion passports aimed at removing barriers and supporting better inclusion of disabled people and other colleagues at work. The passports, adopted from an initiative introduced at the BBC in 2019, will be confidential and will support conversations with line managers to ensure disabled colleagues and others get the right support they need at work. They will also be transferrable to enable holders to move smoothly across departments and between broadcasters, reducing the need for disabled talent and staff to repeatedly disclose their adjustment needs to each new employer or manager.
Managers will be supported at each organization to help them work with employees and their passports most effectively. The plans will also be introduced into the independent production sector to support disabled freelancers.

Combining a traditional whodunit basis with a genre mash up that includes thriller, drama, noir, and comedy is not an easy task, but is exactly what Honey Trehan attempted with “Raat Akeli Hai”. Let us see if he succeeded.
After a flashback of a murder that took place five years before the main story, the film turns to the present, where Inspector Jatil Yadan, a small-town officer who still lives with his mother and is pressured by everyone around him to get married, is tasked with investigating a high-profile member of a rich aristocrat named Raghuveer Singh. Jatil arrives in the manor, only to find that the man was murdered with his own weapon during his wedding night, and that none of the inhabitants of the house seems to know or have heard anything.

The trailer of Ak vs Ak is out now, and while the audience is loving the style of Anil Kapoor, his co-star Anurag Kashyap, a popular director, is getting lauded for his acting skills too.
Ak vs Ak is not Anurag's first film as an actor, and he certainly is not the first Bollywood director to come in front of the camera.
Here's a list of present day directors who took on the challenge of being an actor for their own films or others':
Anurag Kashyap
He will be seen as a filmmaker who kidnaps the daughter of a filmstar in Vikramaditya Motwane's upcoming film "Ak vs Ak". He had also appeared as a cop in "Ghoomketu" directed by Pushpendra Nath Misra. Prior to this, he had acted as corrupt police officer, Acp Rane, in "Akira", directed by Ar Murugadoss. Raat Akeli Hai (Netflix)
Starring: Nawazuddin Siddiqui,Radhika Apte,Shweta Tripathi,Tigmanshu Dhulia,Shivani Raghuvanshi
Directed by Honey Trehan
A death in the family kills a lot of hopes and expectations built around the life of the person who is no more.
…Or less. Raat Akeli Hai, a skillfully scripted whodunit that is much more than just a murder mystery, opens with two deaths, both connected to the same family. The patriarchal nightmare of the Singh parivar, a feudal kingdom where kinks and whims rule, where the men decide the quality of the air women should breathe, is brought to life in flickering colours of dark furtive suppressed emotions.
Straightaway we must applaud Pankaj Kumar’s cinematography. A lot of the intended incandescence of seething hearts is lost on the Ott platform. What remains is still remarkable. First-time director Honey Trehan creates a dark sinister self-contained universe of painful gender...

Readers may recall that the much-publicised film received mix reactions from the audience but was applauded for the terrific performances from the lead actors. Now, Abhishek Chaubey is ready for his next project and it is with veteran actor-director Satish Kaushik. Satish Kaushik, who starred in Udta Punjab as Shahid Kapoor's uncle, will be directing a biopic. This time around Abhishek Chaubey will be co-producing Satish's next directorial venture. Confirming the news, Satish revealed that the film is based on a man in Azamgarh village in Uttar Pradesh who was declared dead on paper when in reality he was alive. The man fought for 18 years to prove that he wasn't dead. The untitled film is a black comedy and will be produced by Abhishek Chaubey along with Satish Kaushik's company and Honey Trehan's MacGuffin Pictures.
