It was a little more than a decade ago when Nigerian movies were considered laughter gags because of how ridiculously bad everything about them was. From painful dialogue, tremendously poor CGI, and acting that makes you laugh at the hilariousness of the movie, Nigerian films or African action/thrillers in general would hardly be taken seriously. However, Donovan Marsh’s 2023 action thriller iNumber Number: Jozi Gold knows exactly what to deliver and how to appeal to an audience that’s used to Hollywood-level action. Starring his usual cast of Clementine Mosimane, S’Dumo Mtshali, Presley Chweneyagae, Fana Mokoena, Deon Lotz, Noxolo Dlamini, and others, it tells the story of two South African men who grew up in the same orphanage and went into the policing line. Moshoeshoe, aka Shoes, and Chili Ngcobo continuously fail to do anything substantial because of the raging corruption in the high ranks and the administratively suffering condition of the country.

Number Number: Jozi Gold is a South African thriller film written and directed by Donovan Marsh, starring S’Dumo Mtshali, Presley Chweneyagae, and Brenda Ngxoli.
Netflix is once again supporting the South African film industry, which is making progress with films like this one. The movie has enough elements to entertain the audience and also serves as a critique of the corruption in the country.
The film is not neorealistic, but instead, it is full of action and rhythm, with a style similar to that of Guy Ritchie. It tells the story of crime with excellent production and editing. Although it does not reinvent the thriller genre, it is a perfect product for an industry that needs to showcase its talent, which is evident in this film directed by Donovan Marsh.

Even some South African produced films that have struggled, such as ‘Chappie’ starring Dev Patel, Sigourney Weaver, and Hugh Jackman, still have introduced unique and innovative elements into their films. American submarine Captain Joe Glass is on the hunt for a U.S. sub in distress in the Arctic Ocean. He soon learns that a secret Russian coup is in the offing, a conspiracy that threatens to dismantle the world order. With crew and country on the line, Glass must assemble an elite group of Navy SEALs to sneak through enemy waters, rescue the kidnapped Russian president and prevent World War III.
Donovan Marsh’s Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman staring, Hunter Killer is an unapologetic 90s action throwback and while it basks in the glory of outlandish politics and toxic masculine bravado, it undoubtedly should have been left in the era it was designed for.

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (Photo credit: 20th Century Fox).
Freddie Mercury gave his final live performance as the front man of Queen in England in 1986 so it’s clear the Bohemian Rhapsody movie is drawing a lot of moviegoers who either were born after that or were not huge fans of the band.
The 20th Century Fox biopic registered the seventh biggest opening of the year in Oz, 10 per cent ahead of the debut of A Star is Born, which powered through its third weekend.
Meanwhile action-thriller Hunter Killer is another dud in Gerard Butler’s faltering career and Charming, a Us animated musical comedy, did not live up to its title.
Us audiences shunned Fahrenheit 11/9, Michael Moore’s documentary on how Donald Trump ascended to President, so it’s no surprise that Aussies stayed away as the Madman Entertainment release took $36,000 on 17 screens including advance screenings.

Created for a world in which our President and the Russian President weren’t BFFs, Hunter Killer is an absurd and occasionally fun military thriller full of grandstanding speeches and special effects that are just good enough. Gerard Butler stars as the stone-faced Joe Glass, the commanding officer of the USS Arkansas who is pulled out of retirement precisely because he’s an out of the box thinker who didn’t graduate from Annapolis (or so we’re told many times in the first 20 minutes). No sir, our man came up in the Navy doing every job on a submarine.
In the film’s opening moments on an American sub, the USS Tampa Bay is shot down in Russian waters leading to high alert in Washington. Under the command of Rear Admiral John Fisk (Common) and Nsa operative Jayne Norquist (Linda Cardellini), an elite Seal squad is sent into Russia...

Chicago – The United States military as superheroes has never gotten a better workout than in “Hunter Killer,” the title that sounds like a Halloween-themed movie, but it’s a style of submarine that seeks to adjust our geo-political balance. Gerard Butler is the commander hoping to prevent World War 3.

There are several absurdities, starting with the casting. The rapper Common portrays a starchy military man but looks like he’s playing dress up, and has to hear lines from Gary Oldman (as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff) like “I know you’re a war hero, but…” Gerard Butler is on an action movie streak (“Hunter Killer” was made by the same production team that gave us “Olympus Has Fallen” and “London Has Fallen” with Gerard), but his Scottish accent couldn’t pronounce the word “naval.” But the film moves along in a decent action-oriented pace, and...

Action-thriller “Hunter Killer” captured a moderate $420,000 at 2,200 North American locations on Thursday night.
The Lionsgate title, starring Gerard Butler, Gary Oldman, and Common, should collect between $5 million and $9 million this weekend when it launches at 2,720 sites. “Hunter Killer,” based on the novel “Firing Point,” follows a group of Navy SEALs deep in the Arctic Ocean on a mission to rescue the captured Russian president.
“Hunter Killer” is expected to be dwarfed by the second weekend of “Halloween,” which is on track for $30 million to $40 million. The fourth weekends of Tom Hardy’s “Venom” and Lady Gaga’s “A Star Is Born” will also pull in between $10 million and $15 million each.
“Hunter Killer,” directed by Donovan Marsh from a script by Arne Schmidt and Jamie Moss, looks likely to be battling for fourth place with Sony holdover “Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween.”

Okay film fans, buy your ticket, settle into your seat, and grab the armrests as you prepare to submerge! Dive, dive, dive into the murky depths of another underwater adventure (and just hope you don’t become “Spam in the can”). This subset of the war film genre has been cruising the cinemas for well over 75 years, longer if you count the movie adaptations of Jules Verne’s Captain Nemo. The gold sub flick standard might have been the two torpedo blasts from 1958’s Run Silent Run Deep and 1961’s Sf-themed Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea (which spawned a weekly TV series soon after). Things were quiet beneath the waves (well after The Incredible Mr. Limpet scuttled the U-boat menace) until the Cold War set 1989 smash The Hunt For Red October which began a 13-year wave of ocean thrillers including Crimson Tide, U-571, and K-19: The Widowmaker. After some time away,...

You know those DVDs that sit in a giant Walmart bin, where, if you’re so inclined, you can spend half an hour sifting for a $2 treasure? The kinds of movies usually dumped unceremoniously into theaters in January, and maybe if you’re going stir crazy you take a chance and find yourself happily surprised? “Hunter Killer” is one of those.
It’s not going to win any Oscars, or give “Halloween” a run for its money. And what it’s doing taking up valuable cineplex space in the fall is anyone’s guess. And since we’re already damning this one with faint praise, let’s push it further still: As Cold War submarine thrillers starring Gerard Butler go, you could do a lot worse.

In one of the more off-beat movie marketing choices of late, “Hunter Killer” star Gerard Butler appeared at the Pentagon — the Virginia headquarters of the Department of Defense, usually the part of the federal government most closely aligned with national security and the armed forces, not film-centric interview opportunities — earlier this week to chat about his upcoming submarine thriller. Butler was on hand to answer queries about his film, which follows a group of Navy SEALs who are forced to save the kidnapped Russian president in an effort to avert a worldwide military crisis, thanks to the full support and involvement of both the U.S. Navy and Department of Defense.

Sadly, “Hunter Killer” is not about Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman hatching a plan to intercept the pee tapes to bring down Donald Trump, but it’s not too far off. The action thriller from Lionsgate is named after a new class of submarine with nuclear capabilities, and it involves rescuing the Russian president from kidnapping. “Hunter Killer” has assembled a veritable feast of quality action actors; Common, Linda Cardellini, and Toby Stephens join Butler and Oldman in the military thriller. It also stars Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist in his last film role since his death in 2017.
The official synopsis reads: “Amid heightened tensions between the Us and Russia, a new generation of highly sophisticated nuclear attack subs called hunter killers prowl the murky depths. When the Russian president is captured by his rogue general, an untested American submarine captain (Butler) teams up with an elite group of Navy SEALs to save him.

When the Russian President is kidnapped by a rogue general, the U.S. Navy SEALs come to the rescue working alongside the Russians to bring their him back. That is the premise of the new Summit military actioner Hunter Killer that stars Gerard Butler, Gary Oldman, Common, Toby Stephens and Linda Cardellini. The submarine military thriller is reminiscent of The Hunt For Red October in building tension in what is a peek into what appears to be an action-packed film.
The first trailer has dropped on the film which was based on the 2012 novel Firing Point from Don Keith and George Wallace. Adapted by Arne Schmidt and Jamie Moss, the story is about an untested American submarine captain who teams with Navy SEALs to rescue the Russian official. Earlier today came word via THR that Ice Cube and his son O'Shea Jackson Jr. could be teaming up again for the Donovan Marsh-directed action thriller "April 29, 1992" at Lionsgate.
Sascha Penn's script follows an ex-criminal (Cube) who must save his son when a group of thugs raid his place of work in the hopes to steal an expensive amount of platinum.
Jackson Jr. starred as his father in "Straight Outta Compton" and notices for his acting were good enough that the studio considered this project feasible. Filming was said to begin in February and Will Packer will produce.
There's just one problem - it's not true. The pair's representative has issued a statement to Deadline saying:
"Ice Cube and O'Shea Jackson Jr. have no plans to commit to this project at this time. Any speculations or rumors that suggest that they are confirmed are simply untrue."
