The Black Mass, the title of actress Devanny Pinn’s directorial debut is not, as one might guess, a reference to a Satanic ritual. It’s the description one of the survivors gave of the man who, across one long night in 1978, attacked four of her sorority sisters, killing two of them as well as attacking a random woman he encountered nearby.
That man was Ted Bundy. That doesn’t mean that The Black Mass is a typical true-crime film or even a straightforward slasher film. Pinn and co-writers Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle keep the killer in the background figuratively and literally for much of the film.

The scene where Robert Shaw gets eaten in “Jaws” is one of the most thrilling moments in movie history. After all of Steven Spielberg’s virtuoso framing and cool ’70s Hitchcock scare tactics, the shark’s big-mouthed consumption of a man who fully deserves to be eaten had a shockingly raw “Look, there it is!” exploitation-film brazenness. (One not inaccurate way to describe “Jaws” would be to call it the greatest B-movie ever made.) “The Flood,” an alligator-attack movie that’s also a violent prison-break thriller, takes its cue from that scene. Set in a backwater Louisiana police station during a hurricane, the film isn’t shy about serving up its big, nasty human-torso-meets-jaws moments. It’s basically a slasher movie with teeth.
The alligator thriller, of course, was always a bargain-basement knockoff of “Jaws” — literally, since the alligators are inevitably slithering out of some basement somewhere. But it was...

Plot: A daring jailbreak during a dangerous Louisiana hurricane is interrupted by a horde of large hungry alligators.
Review: I’ll always count myself as a lover of absurd killer animal movies. When done right, they can be heightened explorations of the relationship between humanity and nature. When done wrong, they can be schlocky messes that don’t really have much to say about anything. The Flood is more of the latter with its very cheap effects and some of the most absurd story beats I’ve seen all year. Given the Louisiana setting, it’s hard not to think of a similarly themed Gator movie, Crawl. Unfortunately, that’s where the similarities end.

Borrowing a page from 2019’s Crawl, The Flood aims to escalate the thrills by pitting man-eating alligators against cops and prisoners in a flooded Louisiana jail amidst a raging hurricane. It’s a high concept scenario that lends itself well to action-horror thrills and B-movie fun. The Flood doesn’t quite follow through on execution, though. It’s not the rough effects that sink The Flood, but an overly convoluted plot that bogs down the runtime.
Louisiana sheriff Jo Newman (Nicky Whelan) already has enough on her plate, trying to corral her officers into preparing the leaking police station from further storm damage during a ferocious hurricane. Then she receives a phone call announcing the unexpected arrival of a prison transport bus in dire need of temporary shelter for the night. Newman’s reluctance gets overruled, and she’s forced to contend with a group of dangerous convicts, including cop...

There’s just something about a killer animal film that can provide so much entertainment that it’s a shock we don’t get more of them. But there’s also an inherent schlockiness to them that makes it understandable. Outside of Jaws, there are few that are considered high art. So it’s easy to go into most with lower expectations and end up having a fun time with them. The Flood is a film that has its problems (check out my review Here) but it’s the cast that makes it worth it. Casper Van Dien continues to be one of my favorite people to interview and Nicky Whelan managed to land herself on that list rather quickly. So join me for these really fun conversations as we get into some pretty shocking revelations of what went down on set in Bangkok.

The Flood opens with Sommer and Clarence taking refuge from Hurricane Clarence in an empty building. That might protect them from the rain, but as they find out, the weather isn’t the worst thing about the storm.
The storm also causes a bus transferring a group of dangerous criminals, Big Jim, Floyd, Jox, Angelo and Russel Cody to take refuge for the night in a decrepit small town jail run by Sheriff Jo Newman.
Now if the first paragraph sounds a bit like Crawl and the second one makes you think of the opening of Assault on Precinct 13 you’re not the only one. And I’m sure writers Chad Law and Josh Ridgway were...

Lionsgate and Saban Films will unleash the alligator horror movie The Flood this summer (watch the trailer here), and the film’s official MPA rating has been handed in this week.
The Flood has been Rated “R” for…
“Violence, some gore, and language throughout.”
The action-horror movie hits Theaters, On Demand and Digital on July 14, 2023. The premise suggests a Syfy-style monster movie – alligators inside a prison – but the execution looks a lot closer to Alexandre Aja’s Crawl than anything you’d find on the Syfy network.
Think Crawl meets Assault on Precinct 13.
The Flood is directed by Brandon Slagle (Frost, The Dawn) and co-written by Chad Law (Section 8, Close Range, 6 Bullets) and Josh Ridgway (The Sector, Howlers).

"We're all going to get eaten alive!" Yes, yes they probably will. Saban Films has revealed the trailer for an action horror movie called The Flood, another of these junky direct-to-video B-movie horror flicks that seem to be popping up all the time now. It's from the same bad filmmaker who also made Battle For Saipan, also with Casper Van Dien, who is back again for this one. A horde of giant hungry alligators is unleashed on a group of in-transit prisoners and their guards after a massive hurricane floods Louisiana. Yes, this is the alligators-in-a-prison movie, if anyone wants to watch. Starring Casper Van Dien, Nicky Whelan, Louis Mandylor, Devanny Pinn, Ryan Francis, Randy Wayne, and Kim DeLonghi. This does not seem worth anyone's time or money - steer clear of this one, folks. There are plenty of other better giant alligator / croc movies to watch instead: Sewer Gators,...

Shane Dax Taylor’s 2023 action/thriller The Best Man stars Dolph Lundgren, Luke Wilson, Nicky Whelan, and a host of other stars, but it barely delivers on the promises. An age-old story about retribution during a happy occasion that makes the occasion go horribly wrong serves as the plot of the movie, and it goes exactly how you’d imagine. It’s sad to see Dolph’s caliber wasted downing drinks and shooting at enemies with no room for growth for him or any of the characters involved. Here’s the detailed recap and ending of The Best Man.

The Best Man is a film directed by Shane Dax Taylor starring Brendan Fehr, Dolph Lundgren and Luke Wilson.
The Best Man: an 80s style action movie that brings back some nostalgia, piety and the best feelings.
80s action returns to rescue one of its lesser-known myths, Dolph Lundgren.
One of those action movies in which, mysteriously, we all agree there’s something missing.
The Best Man Movie Review
The Best Man is one of those bad action movies, a B-series video store film from which, deep down, we still try to get something good, especially due to the nostalgia that Dolph Lundgren brings us and the Die Hard-style eighties classicism that the whole set exhales, from its borrowed script to its protagonists, who also seem taken from another era in which cinema, at least, seemed different.

"What are your daughter's lives worth to you?" Saban Films has launched an official trailer for an action thriller titled The Best Man, which is a bit of a goofy name for an intense action flick this. But maybe that will help make it stand out? Or not... In this gun-filled thriller, mercenaries seize control of a remote resort hotel during a wedding. It's now up to the best man, the groom and their drunken best friend to stop the terrorists and save the hostages. That pitch sounds like it's Die Hard meets The Hangover, but this trailer doesn't look like either of those at all. The Best Man stars Brendan Fehr, Nicky Whelan, Scout Taylor-Compton, Scott Martin, with Dolph Lundgren and Luke Wilson. What a strange cast. This film looks remarkably generic and bland, same as most action films do these days. It seems like they just took over...

Plot: A group of friends is stalked by a large shark whose only purpose is to kill.
Review: The fact that Maneater is a killer shark movie should already set your expectations right from the jump. I mean, when was the last time we had a good one? But that also means that most people going into this should have their expectations set low. In a lot of ways, this is what would happen if you gave Artificial Intelligence the task of making a killer shark movie. It hits all the moments you would expect it to and doesn’t deter once. But is that a good thing?
Nicky Whalen stars as a woman who just had her engagement fall apart. She’s in a tropical location with friends to have fun and let loose. They decide to embark on a booze cruise and end up right in the hunting...

"Guys, it's fine, dolphins are a good sign!" Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for Maneater, yet another new shark horror movie chomping its way onto screens this summer (along with The Reef: Stalked and Shark Bait). This is made by a B-movie director named Justin Lee, also director of this year's The Most Dangerous Game remake, which means this looks almost like an asylum remake of some of the other, much better shark attack movies. After an accident during their vacation getaway to an idyllic island paradise, a group of friends is stalked by a large shark. The cast includes Nicky Whelan, Trace Adkins, with Jeff Fahey and Shane West. The only good part about this trailer is the shot of the clearly rubber shark prop, the rest of it looks like VHS bargain bin trash. Which might be just the kind of shark movie some folks like.

When Jeffrey Katzenberg was a kid growing up in New York, his father Walter, “a very successful, man-about-town stockbroker,” always carried a wad of discreetly folded 100 bills. As he moved through the day, Walter would “quietly and stealthily” slip one to people in his orbit, whether it be “a doorman, a waiter, a valet, someone standing on the street with a sign about needing help, a maid, a taxi driver, a guitarist on a corner.”
