By the time Halloween wraps up, most people have tucked away their pumpkins and spider webs in favour of colourful wreaths and Santa figurines. For horror fans, it means Krampus and blood covered snow now take centre stage. The holiday of Christmas naturally lends itself to the horror genre, spawning favourites that include Black Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night, Rare Exports, and more. However, many films are too gruesome for younger people to enjoy.
To let children in on the festive and frightful fun, here is a variety of age-appropriate Christmas horror film and television specials the entire family can enjoy.
Creeped Out: Splinta Claws (2019)
Season 2, Episode 10
“Everyone knows there are nice children as well as naughty. But are there good and bad Santas as well?” This question is posed in the opening of the “Splinta Claws” episode of the anthology series Creeped Out on Netflix, which originally released in the UK and Canada.

For underground music talent, it’s back to the BBC barricades. In 2010, a high-profile campaign was launched to save leftfield-leaning new music station 6 Music. Were it not for the 25,000 emails that bombarded the BBC in support of the station, we might never have heard of Fontaines DC, Idles or Jockstrap. And now a similar groundswell of objection is rising to the news that all 32 of the station’s talent-hunting BBC Introducing DJs nationwide have been put on notice of redundancy, following leaked proposals that suggest the Beeb is considering culling two-thirds of their output, or merging shows into larger regional broadcasts.
Now this might, at first glance, look like a very post-Brexit sort of streamlining; cutting down on frivolous, niche-interest expenditure so that more of our precious license fee can be syphoned into Claudia Winkleman’s Traitors knitwear budget. Plus, the most high-profile acts discovered through the network – Ed Sheeran,...

BBC Introducing shows across the UK are facing proposed cuts that would mean local shows would merged or be axed by the broadcaster.
Last Friday (13 January), local presenters announced the news that they were being faced with redundancy and urged listeners, artists and industry professionals to share their stories.
“The Backbone Of BBC Introducing... If you’ve appreciated our network of local BBC Introducing shows across England and the Channel Islands over the past 15 years, here’s a chance to say so” wrote 6 Music presenter Tom Robinson on Twitter alongside an online form.
Local BBC Introducing shows currently help support new and emerging talent by accepting submissions from regional areas and reviewing songs for radio play.
This enables emerging local artists to gain exposure and radio play, with the potential for their music to be fed into BBC national radio.
The introducing shows are responsible for championing artists such as Arlo Parks,...

Olivia Newman’s mystery film Where the Crawdads Sing has arrived on Netflix in the US and immediately jumped to No 1 on the site’s most popular movies ranking.
The film, which follows the story of a girl named Kya, features Daisy-Edgar Jones, Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson, and David Strathairn.
Set in the 1950s and 1960s in rural North Carolina, the narrative blends elements of murder mystery, romance, and nature writing with a coming-of-age story about Kya, who grew up alone in the marshes.
The film is based on the bestselling book of the same name which sold more than 12m copies since its publication in 2018. It was featured as part of Reese Witherspoon’s book club, and the actor now serves as the film’s executive producer.
While audiences on Netflix are clearly loving the movie adaptation, critics were not so convinced.

Normal People star deserved a better Hollywood debut than this southern gothic schmaltzer and its outrageously evasive cheat ending
Daisy Edgar-Jones was a lockdown smash for her excellent performance in the BBC’s Sally Rooney adaptation Normal People, and she deserved better for her Hollywood debut than this uncompromisingly terrible southern gothic schmaltzer based on the humungous US bestseller by Delia Owens. It’s a relentless surge of solemnly ridiculous nonsense in the style of romdram maestro Nicholas Sparks (creator of The Notebook and Message in a Bottle) culminating in a courtroom trial with Edgar-Jones’s free-spirited heroine in the dock as the Manic Pixie Dream Girl Murder Suspect. Defending her is David Strathairn as the white-suited decent liberal lawyer and it is at this stage that this film plays like an all-white reboot of To Kill a Mockingbird with Edgar-Jones somehow getting to play Scout and Tom Robinson at the same time.

Director Brad Bird and his co-writer Damon Lindelof take on a daring, ambitious science fiction project: chosen 'dreamers' are given glimpses of a gleaming Future City on the Horizon that exists in a parallel dimension of possibility. It's a chase film, a touchstone 'Sense of Wonder' epic and a wholly original visual extravaganza. The spacey gee-whiz thrills are linked to a worthy message, the rescue of a dying planet. Warning: The following contains major thematic spoilers for a movie nobody has seen.
It hadn’t been 2 weeks since its release when Brad Bird’s new film Tomorrowland had been dubbed a “failure” by the very studio that released it. In those two weeks the film was beaten at the box office by the sequel to a movie where glee club girls slid around in vomit, was projected unable to make back its reported 190 million dollar budget and became Disney’s convenient scapegoat for scrapping production on “Tron 3” – which caused internet trolls to take a break from complaining about Tron: Legacy and the abundance of sequels and remakes to complain that they won’t get to see “Tron 3”.
As with all news that goes viral, the reaction was swift and disproportionate, allowing box office performance to tarnish the film’s image and shut down discussion of the movie itself. A...

Walt Disney Pictures released their new adventure/fantasy flick, "Tomorrowland," into theaters this weekend. I just watched it, and thought it was very entertaining, delivering lots of great action and drama along with a very intriguing storyline. The movie stars: George Clooney, Judy Greer, Tim McGraw, Hugh Laurie, Kathryn Hahn, Thomas Robinson, Britt Robertson, Raffey Cassidy and Keegan-Michael Key. In the new flick, we're given the backstory of characters, Frank Walker (George Clooney) and Casey Newton (Britt Robertson) Frank's story is a little short, just summarizing how he met a young girl robot named Athena way back in 1964 when he was trying to get his jet pack invention entered into a contest. While it failed, Athena believed in him and brought him to a futuristic city named Tomorrowland. After that, we got Casey's backstory, which was quite a bit longer, just basically showing how Athena planted a unique pendent in...

For a film about avenues to a better future, Tomorrowland is sure working off a lot of yesterday's ideas. These are big ideas, to be sure, and they're ideas the film's director, Brad Bird, can easily back up with some incredibly big effects. None of that, however, makes up for the banal slate of messages and themes, a hokey sense of humor, and a convoluted narrative that seems to hang its hat on the word "mystery." Bird's co-writer on the screenplay may have had a little something to do with that last bit. Tomorrowland, is a classic case of a project looking really good on paper that fumbles its way to messy execution. That isn't to say that Tomorrowland's ideas are unworthy of exploration. The jetpack that young scientist-in-training Frank Walker (Thomas Robinson in the film's opening moments but who will eventually grow up to be George Clooney) invents...

It turns out that more of them liked it than not with an overall 61 score out of a possible 100 across 43 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: George Clooney, Judy Greer, Tim McGraw, Hugh Laurie, Kathryn Hahn, Thomas Robinson, Britt Robertson, Raffey Cassidy and Keegan-Michael Key. We've provided blurbs from a few of the critics, below. Todd McCarthy from The Hollywood Reporter, gave it a very nice 90 score, stating: "All hands on both sides of the camera do outstanding work. Clooney seems to be enjoying himself thoroughly as the old grump whose creative flame hasn’t been entirely extinguished, but it falls more to Robertson to carry the film, which she does with great energy and appeal." Bian Truitt from USA Today, gave it a 75 score,...

The last 10 minutes of a movie are often what shapes our opinion most -- a strong ending can soften our feelings about a bad movie, and a weak, tone-deaf ending can spoil a filmgoing experience far more thoroughly than any overly revealing trailer or review. Tomorrowland is often a breathtakingly gorgeous movie with charming performances, but the ending is so unabashedly lesson-driven and heavy-handed that it's difficult to remember anything but its flaws and missteps.
The movie's opening and closing scenes are meant as bookends, but these are bookends created by your clumsy kid brother in shop class on the day the nails ran short. The first scenes in particular feel like a hurried reshoot/restructure to get George Clooney onscreen earlier. Does the future look bright for Tomorrowland? In the movie, an unlikely duo—jaded inventor Frank Walker (George Clooney) and optimistic teen Casey Newton (Britt Robertson)—work together to unearth the secrets of a mysterious place somewhere in time and space. Despite what little they've seen, Tomorrowland may not really as utopic as it seems. The PG-rated sci-fi adventure mystery movie also stars Raffey Cassidy as Athena, Kathryn Hahn as Ursula, Keegan-Michael Key as Hugo, Hugh Laurie as David Nix, Tim McGraw as Eddie Newton and Thomas Robinson as young Frank Walker. I'm quite certain you could lop off the first 20-30 minutes of Tomorrowland and never notice. Then again, the same could probably be said for the final 80-90 minutes. There is little to no point to this movie other than to throw a plastic-wrapped vision of imagination and invention alongside a ham-fisted environmental message down our throats with all the subtlety of James Cameron's Avatar, but Cameron had the good sense to at least develop a story around his preaching whereas Tomorrowland beats around the bush until finally allowing Hugh Laurie to belt out his sermon before delivering the film's ultimate finale with a big dull thud. Director Brad Bird (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Ratatouille), who co-wrote the film's screenplay with Damon Lindelof ("Lost", Prometheus), spends nearly a quarter of the film's running time introducing us to the young inventor Frank Walker (Thomas Robinson). Frank has built a...

I want to believe in Tomorrowland.
Like The Iron Giant and The Incredibles before it, Brad Bird’s latest is a thrilling, original adventure that really wants to make you feel something. It’s a non-sequel, non-superhero affair, powered by old-fashioned sentiments of optimism and hope, whole-heartedly committed to feeding the creative souls of idealistic youngsters in the audience. In a cinematic climate saturated with dystopian gloom and superhero fantasy, the film’s earnest message – that ordinary people can ensure the future of their dreams by fighting for it – is welcome.
What’s less welcome is all the claptrap surrounding Tomorrowland‘s vintage Disney core. As written by Bird, Lost‘s Damon Lindelof and Entertainment Weekly TV critic Jeff Jensen, it’s a movie that tries to run with some admirably big ideas but ends up tripping over its own feet, hobbled by tin-eared dialogue and a third-act shift from ebullient positivity to sanctimonious finger-wagging.

I love ambition. When you’re a filmmaker with some measure of clout, it always makes sense to really shoot for the stars, as it were. Not everyone does it, but director Brad Bird sure does. On Friday, Bird’s new flight of fancy Tomorrowland opens in theaters, hoping to capture the imaginations of families throughout the world. After the wild successes of The Incredibles and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Bird could basically do whatever he wanted, so he teamed up with scribe Damon Lindelof in order to make this unique tale happen. Not everyone agrees with me, but on my end, I’m thrilled that they did. Tomorrowland is something very singular and enjoyable. In short, Tomorrowland is about imagination fueling the future. Without giving too much away, there is an actual place called Tomorrowland that basically features the world’s best and brightest. George Clooney plays an inventor...

From the director of The Iron Giant and The Incredibles comes the sci-fi adventure, Tomorrowland. Here's Ryan's review...
Director Brad Bird has an almost immaculate run of form when it comes to bringing larger-than-life entertainments to the screen. The Iron Giant was one of the most acclaimed animated films of the 1990s. The Incredibles and Ratatouille are among Pixar's best films so far. His live-action debut Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, while not perfect, was perhaps the most entertaining movie entry since the first.
Bird brings his blue-sky storytelling to bear on Tomorrowland: A World Beyond, a eyed sci-fi fairytale with elements taken straight from classic pulp magazine stories. It’s The Wizard Of Oz retold by Ray Bradbury or Hugo Gernsback, with bits of The Terminator and Buck Rogers thrown in for good measure. It’s an entertaining yet sometimes befuddling bag of intricately moving parts, not all of which fit together too well.

Taking its name and inspiration from the futuristic themed area at Disneyland, Brad Bird's latest blockbuster mines similar territory to his earlier films The Iron Giant and The Incredibles, a pair of dazzling animations that expertly blended heart, spectacle and nostalgia.
Tomorrowland isn't quite up to the level of those aforementioned offerings, but as Hollywood's biggest movies become ever more reliant on being "dark and gritty", brownie points should go to Bird for countering all that by coming up with something that's buoyantly optimistic. It all feels suitably on-brand for Disney, who'll be hoping Tomorrowland hits big at the box office to open the door for further theme park-to-film adaptations (Ryan Gosling and Guillermo del Toro's Haunted Mansion is incoming).

This may be the hardest review I've ever had to write. After all, I think Brad Bird is a certifiably great filmmaker. I have been a fan of his work as long as I've seen his name on things, starting with "Family Dog," the animated episode of "Amazing Stories." So of course, I walk into his films hoping to like them. The year it was released, "The Incredibles" was my pick as best film, and both "The Iron Giant" and "Ratatouille" have also found spots in my top ten lists at the end of the year. In fact, for years, one of the things I was proudest of in all of the work I've done writing about movies from the early days of Ain't It Cool News to right now involved "The Iron Giant." That film is beloved now, and deservedly so. There was a point, though, when it looked...

Jet Packs. Any vision of the future has to have jet packs. There aren't a lot of interesting movies hitting theaters this May. Heck, there aren't a lot of movies, period, hitting theaters this May. Sure, one title that will soon be crowned one of the biggest of all-time -- you know the one of which I speak -- after it bowed late last night to the tune of $27.6 million. Who knows, it could very well be the case that several of you read this article while you're standing in line to see the-movie-that-shall-not-be-named-until-page-two. And if that's the case, I urge you to share this with your cohorts, all those people standing around you looking for something to do until the movie finally (Finally!) starts. Do it now, don't worry, I'll wait. But back to what I was saying... Outside of a handful of blockbusters, there just isn't a lot on the release slate for the coming month. It's slim pickings, y'all!

Tomorrowland has been purposefully secretive from the off, which makes sense considering it's about a secret city full of secret technology and secrets generally. Now, though, as the release draws closer, more details are coming to light. Here are a couple of said details in the form of two exclusive stills from the latest Empire Magazine, out now. Like Pirates Of The Carribbean before it, Tomorrowland was inspired by a Disneyland theme park zone, but Brad Bird's big budget sci-fi spectacular is so much more than a quickie crossover. "I would say it's inspired by a Disney frame of mind," says Bird. "Walt Disney was an environmentalist, a naturalist, a progressive thinker when it came to the future." Also, when it comes to the crunch, Tomorrowland is special in a more dollars-and-cents way: "An original film with a budget of over $100 million? That's a very rare creature." The young...

The May 1 release of Avengers: Age of Ultron marks the "official" start of the 2015 Summer Movie Season and with that in mind, it's only appropriate to offer up a look forward at what's ahead over the next four months. What is ahead over the next four monthsc Well, a lot of movies that cost a lot of money with a few smaller features mixed in for good measure, and as much as some of us may lament the fact studios have become so franchise focused, it's hard not to admit a desire to see some of these bigger features. As a means of whittling down the flock of films arriving over the next several months I've chosen to take a look at my 20 most anticipated, which does mean there are bound to be some titles I probably ought to mention, but didn't make the list for a variety of reasons.

Disney has released a terrific new trailer for Tomorrowland starring George Clooney.
Additionally, a special presentation of the film, featuring more than six minutes of footage to be introduced by director Brad Bird, will screen exclusively in IMAX theatres domestically and in select international markets beginning May 1.
The extended first look of Tomorrowland will screen directly prior to Marvel’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron and will play for the duration of that film’s run in IMAX.
Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world—and them—forever.

Since its inception, the overriding theme associated with Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland has been the majestic nature of the titular utopia. As the product of some of the greatest minds of the 20th century – including Walt Disney and Albert Einstein – it’s been described as an alternate reality in which anything is possible. Futurism 101, basically. But Disney’s upcoming sci-fi flick has plenty of room for action sequences, too, with this latest trailer showcasing some of the inventive weaponry that Britt Robertson and George Clooney will need if they are to fight for tomorrow.
With little over a month to its release, Disney has essentially reached the sweet spot in its Tomorrowland marketing, revealing just enough of the film’s premise and characters to give audiences a gist of the action, all the while keeping the pressing questions – how does Robertson’s character fit into proceedings? – largely under wraps. Disney is set to release Brad Bird’s retro sci-fi film Tomorrowland next month, and it still seems like there's so much we don’t know about it. I kind of like being in the dark about about this movie. I’m already sold on it, but Disney has released a brand spankin' new trailer for the film along with an IMAX poster for the movie and four character posters featuring George Clooney as Frank, Britt Robertson as Casey Newton, Raffey Cassidy as Athena, and Thomas Robinson as younger version of Frank.
The new trailer for the film offers up more extremely fun footage, some additional insight into the story, and an exciting tease of how Frank and Casey's adventure to Tomorrowland begins.

I'm putting together a list of my most anticipated movies of Summer 2015 and Brad Bird's Tomorrowland is going to be on it, but I'm not sure just how high on the list it will be. The cues I'm getting from most people is that it looks too much like a kid's feature, which is fine, that just means it might not be for me. It's not often we get movies for families nowadays that aren't just fat people riding Segways into walls. The idea of quality (and yet family friendly) PG action film seems to be a thing of the past and maybe Bird has tapped into that here. Give this newest trailer a watch below and check out the new IMAX poster, and let me know what you think. Update: First came the IMAX posters; now we have the real deal: a new, full-length trailer for Tomorrowland that amps up the action and brings a sense of menace to the fantastical goings-on. Click below to take a closer look. Take a touch of Wizard Of Oz, a dash of J.M. Barrie and a glint of The Jetsons and you’ve got… ah, who are we kidding? Tomorrowland is probably nothing like any of those, although with what exactly it is remaining more under wraps than a kid’s Christmas presents, you can’t blame us for having a guess. The movie has some new character posters that shed approximately zero light on the situation, but do at least feature George Clooney channelling Viper in Top Gun. Alongside Clooney's struggling inventor Frank Walker here are his younger incarnation played by Thomas Robinson, Raffey Cassidy as the mysterious Athena and Britt Robertson as hero-of-the-piece Casey Newton.

Brad Bird's "Tomorrowland" is an interesting entry into the summer movie season for the precise reason that the trailers so far have offered up lots and lots of wonder, but little in the way of actual plot or story. And Disney is sticking with the mystery factor in this latest look at the movie, which again brings a lot of pizzazz. George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, Britt Robertson, Raffey Cassidy, Tim McGraw, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key, and Thomas Robinson star in this movie, conceived by Bird along with Damon Lindelof, about a cranky genius and a wide-eyed teen who become allies in a big adventure. That's it. But you know what? In a time when studios show off everything weeks before we get to the cinema, there is some excitement at having something left to unpack. "Tomorrowland" opens on May 22nd. Check out the new trailer and featurette below.

The middle of Spring actually means a new selection of summer blockbusters to look forward to, and with a ton of big-budget films slated to come out within the next few months and beyond, the summer of 2015 looks like one to remember.

Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland may exist as a mystery wrapped in an enigma at this time, but as we gear up to the sci-fi flick’s anticipated summer release, we’re beginning to learn more and more about what the director has cooked up and, in particular, the mystery behind the titular, utopian wonderland.
Case in point: this new-fangled international trailer. Given that Bird’s résumé The Incredibles and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, the filmmaker has displayed an astute eye for stunning visual and indeed practical effects, making Tomorrowland the perfect candidate for his next outing.
The film orbits around Britt Robertson’s Casey, a young, optimistic teen with a burning curiosity for the unexplainable. Upon discovering an unusual pin that essentially acts as a conduit, whisking her away to the titular area, Casey soon sets out to discover the truth behind the enigmatic landmark. Although, it isn’t long before she discovers that,...
