Fans of light-hearted and fun action movies are having their day in the sun with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt‘s new action comedy film The Fall Guy. Larson and directed by Deadpool 2‘s David Leitch, the Universal Pictures film follows the story of Colt Seavers, a Hollywood stuntman who returns to work after taking a year-long break due to an injury. Colt’s latest gig is at a high-budget blockbuster sci-fi film directed by his ex-girlfriend who he still loves and when the main actor of her film disappears, Colt must find him and bring him back. If you loved all the death-defying stunts and Gosling and Blunt’s electric chemistry in The Fall Guy here are some similar movies you could watch next.

Having won a BAFTA (and landed an Oscar nomination) for her role as Colin Farrell’s kind-hearted but cynical — and distinctly less donkey-friendly — sister in Martin McDonagh’s darkly comic “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Kerry Condon is back in her native Ireland for her next film role.
Set in the height of the Troubles in the mid-1970s, Robert Lorenz’s Irish Western “In the Land of Saints and Sinners,” which launches on Netflix Friday, sees the actress ditch all niceties to play a hard-nosed, mean-as-hell, extremely potty-mouthed and very violent Ira gang leader trying to lie low in rural Donegal following a deadly pub bombing. But it’s not long before she’s up against Liam Neeson, whose demeanor as a quiet widow and secondhand book dealer masks a secret identity as a local hitman for Colm Meaney’s village mobster. The Fabelmans (2022), arguably Steven Spielberg’s most personal movie to date, had everyone talking. Starring Michelle Williams and Paul Dano, it’s a semi-autobiographical tale that’s loosely based on the director’s childhood and his early years as a film director.
However, Spielberg’s reluctance to delve into his family’s history stemmed from worries that his parents would suffer, so the project was dropped for twenty years. Regardless, with seven Oscar nominations upon its release, The Fabelmans has generated a lot of Oscar buzz.
James Cameron’s Avatar
Does that encourage other filmmakers to document their own life stories on screen? Well, the director of Avatar and Titanic, though, is not going to take that route. James Cameron remains surprisingly uninterested when it comes to sharing the story of his own journey to success on the big screen because he finds it “boring”.

At some point during the first act of Robert Lorenz’s handsome but egregiously hackneyed “In the Land of Saints and Sinners,” which is maybe the 900th Liam Neeson movie about a weary hitman/rancher/fixer/truck driver/ex-cop/very tall person who decides to take matters into his own hands when some bad guys step over the line, the prolific Irish actor turns to one of his scene partners and sighs: “There’s more to me than this, and I’d like folks to see it.”
Needless to say, the first part of that sentence is much easier to believe than the second.

St. Patrick’s Day is a time to celebrate Irish culture, history, and of course, to have a bit of fun! To those unfamiliar, March 17th marks the traditional death date of St. Patrick (Ireland’s patron saint). It used to be a religious day to remember him and how Christianity spread in Ireland.

The day is celebrated beyond Ireland as a way to embrace Irish culture. This day offers people a chance to enjoy traditional music, dancing, food, and drinks. Also, wearing green is a big part of it since it’s linked with Ireland.

“You can literally film anything in Ireland that you want to — obviously desert scenes are a bit complicated, but we’ll have a go.” In this quick quip, veteran Irish producer Tristan Orpen Lynch sums up so much about his home country’s movie business right now. A fresh swell of opportunity and confidence may be swirling through it, thanks to the government’s decision to allow producers to claim back 32 percent of any spend on film, TV and animation to $134 million, up from $75 million. However, insiders say it’s actually in the midst of a deeper sea change built upon decades of investment, support and training — always combined with the nation’s innate charm and visually striking locales.
In 2021, the Irish screen industry rapidly bounced back after Covid to generate €500 million ($547m) local spend, its highest ever and 40 percent more than the last record set in 2019. Roll on 2023, and...

Since he made his Hollywood debut in the 2000 Vietnam War drama "Tigerland," Colin Farrell's career has had some downs and some ups. All in all, though, he's largely outgrown his 2000s playboy reputation and is deservedly recognized as one of the best movie stars we've got. Farrell's got the eloquent soul of an artist, the way only an Irishman does.
After Farrell's earlier and fruitless efforts to be an action hero, he's learned to not let his occasional franchise gigs distract him from more personal work. Not all his work is on film either. In 2024, he'll be returning to television with two crime drama roles.
He plays Oz Cobblepot in the Max series "Penguin," spinning out of his supporting role in 2022's "The Batman." Before he returns onscreen as the Penguin, though, he's going to star in (and executive produce) "Sugar" for competing streaming service Apple TV+.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: The Swan, The Twins, Their Wives, and Their Deaths
The line between midnight movies and arthouse cinema has always been blurrier than we might like to believe. Both niches exist to accommodate creators (and their fans) who crave something different from conventional Hollywood fare and are willing to seek out unorthodox screening options like festivals and independent theaters in order to scratch that itch. After finding success in theater, with seminal plays such as The Beauty Queen of Leenane (1996), The Cripple of Inishmaan (1996), A Skull in Connemara (1997) and The Lonesome West (1997), McDonagh found global success as a feature filmmaker with a series of movies noted for their wit, dark themes and black humor.
Hkiff will screen McDonagh’s 2004 Oscar-winning short Six Shooter, as well as his breakout feature, the Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson-starring crime drama In Bruges (2008), for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for best...

Barbra Streisand was recently honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 30th annual SAG Awards on Saturday night. In her career spanning over 60 years, she has starred with several great actors and garnered numerous accolades. However, she also was at the center of several rumored feuds with fellow actors and celebrities. One prominent fan theory was that Streisand couldn’t stand actress and television personality, Oprah Winfrey.

Fans sensed some tension between Streisand and Winfrey when the Funny Girl actress appeared on the latter’s show in 2003. There were several back-and-forth comments made during the show and many still believe that the two might not be on the best terms.

Actor Colin Farrell has been a popular name in the entertainment industry since the early 2000s. Although the actor has appeared in various movies throughout his career, a lot of people only associate him with the role of Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot / The Penguin in 2022’s The Batman.

Farrell’s fans have often pointed out that the actor has performed in better movies, particularly in director Martin McDonagh’s 2008 movie, In Bruges. Not many people know that Farrell initially turned down the offer, but McDonagh wasn’t taking no for an answer. Ultimately, Farrell appeared as Ray in the movie, earning a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor.

Tales of Babylon, an Indie dark crime comedy by Pelayo De Lario, is a testament to why I love cinema. Pelayo de Lario is not yet an established name in the industry, but I have a feeling that it’s going to happen very soon. This movie is also a reason why I like British humor. Well, I’m not going to lie, British humor can be pretty disturbing and even very contextual, but it’s also quite eccentric and deadpan nonetheless. Perhaps the most accurate word to describe this form of humor would be ‘cheeky.’ Coming back to this movie, one can’t help but draw similarities between Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, Taratino’s Pulp Fiction, and Pelayo De Lario’s Tales of Babylon. As a matter of fact, one of the characters quite openly breaks the fourth wall by referring to Pulp Fiction during...

With his outstanding performance in "Saltburn," Barry Keoghan has solidified himself as one of the most exciting and sought-after up-and-coming stars — and it's not just because of that provocative final shot. Sure, the TikTokers were all over "Saltburn" because of its generous helping of full-frontal Keoghan nudity, but the Irish star also delivered a truly unsettling performance as a disturbed student who becomes obsessed with Jacob Elordi's Felix and his upper-class family.
Anyone who followed Keoghan's career prior to "Saltburn" knew he was capable of such feats, especially those who'd seen his equally brilliant portrayal of disturbed teen Martin in 2017's "The Killing of a Sacred Deer." But it's not just the mentally unstable that Keoghan has a knack for playing so well, though that particular talent will no doubt come in handy when the actor has his proper debut as the Joker in Matt Reeves' Batman universe. The...

“Poor Things” has performed well throughout this awards season, winning Best Comedy/Musical Film at the Golden Globes and snagging 11 Oscar nominations in total. That is the same number of awards the Searchlight Pictures movie was nominated for at the BAFTAs, where we predict it to perform well.
One person who is set to have a good night at the British film awards is Tony McNamara, who adapted Alasdair Gray‘s 1992 novel of the same name. McNamara previously worked with Emma Stone on “Cruella” and “The Favourite,” the latter of which was another Yorgos Lanthimos film. McNamara co-wrote that period piece with Deborah Davis. The duo was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars in 2019 but lost to “Green Book”.
However, they won the BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay, over “Cold War” (Janusz Głowacki and Paweł Pawlikowski), “Green Book,” “Roma” (Alfonso Cuarón), and “Vice” (Adam McKay). The film won six other BAFTAs in total,...

It’s the surprise Oscars snub that many of us saw coming. Greta Gerwig missed out on a Best Director nomination for “Barbie,” even as the film scored an impressive eight nominations: picture, adapted screenplay, supporting actor (Ryan Gosling), supporting actress (America Ferrera), costume design, song (“I’m Just Ken”), song (“What Was I Made For”) and production design.
So how did Gerwig stumble? Let’s look at the five most likely reasons.
1. “Barbie” had absolutely zero snob appeal.
The Directors Branch of the academy is notoriously highbrow, and its members like to salute what they are feel are genuine, original and unique achievements in the field of film directing. They don’t care about celebrity status or box office. Gerwig was previously cited by the branch for 2017’s “Lady Bird.” She beat out the likes of Martin McDonagh for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and Steven Spielberg for “The Post.

Barbie director Greta Gerwig was notably snubbed in the best director category during the Oscar nominations on Tuesday. But following last year’s omission of any female filmmaker in the category, Anatomy of a Fall’s Justine Triet received a nomination.
Triet, Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things), Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest) and Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon) were nominated in the coveted category Tuesday morning.
Gerwig is a notable snub, as the Barbie director, throughout the awards season, received various best director nominations (the Directors Guild of America, the Golden Globes, Critics Choice) and wins (Palm Springs International Film Fest). She was also on various pundits’ prediction lists for best director, including from The Hollywood Reporter. Frontrunner Alexander Payne (The Holdovers) was also omitted.

We’ve had a marvellous run of Taskmaster series lately, so when a new line-up announcement is on the horizon, it’s easy to wonder whether the winning streak will continue or if we’re due a dud.
Never fear – Alex Horne and co. have delivered once again, although the series 17 Taskmaster line-up might not be quite what you’re expecting. Instead of the now-traditional Taskmaster family line-up, this time they’ve gone for a veteran from outside the world of stand-up comedy, plus four rising stars with slightly less mainstream recognition than normal. As ever with this show though, anybody you’re not familiar with at the start, you’ll almost certainly love by the end of the series.
The Taskmaster series 17 line-up is: Steve Pemberton, Sophie Willan, Nick Mohammed, John Robins and Joanne McNally! And here they are appearing in the very first trailer for the new run:...

Actor Barry Keoghan shared his battle with necrotizing fasciitis, an uncommon bacterial infection that devours the skin, muscles, nerves, fat and blood vessels surrounding an infected wound.
Keoghan fell ill shortly before the commencement of filming for the 2022 Oscar-nominated movie The Banshees of Inisherin. He revealed that amputation of the affected area was a possibility. In reflection on his experience, he recounted the moment when he asked the doctors if his life was in danger, to which they responded, “Well, we can’t say for certain,” he told GQ.
The actor did not disclose the details of how or where he contracted the infection.
One of the bacteria known to cause this type of flesh-eating infection is Vibrio vulnificus. Approximately 150 to 200 cases of Vibrio vulnificus infection are reported to the CDC each year, and about 1 in 5 individuals succumb to the infection, sometimes within just one or two days of falling ill.

Barry Keoghan has been on a serious upswing over the past several years, truly kicking off his current run with a disturbing performance in Killing of a Sacred Deer and Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk before hitting a steady stream of everything from period dramas to Marvel entries to even playing The Joker. His latest film, Saltburn, has become a major hit for Prime Video, with it one of the most memed-movies ever on TikTok. But his promising future could have been cut short after he contracted a flesh-eating disease that kills one in five of those who catch it.
Barry Keoghan caught necrotizing fasciitis just before filming on The Banshees of Inisherin began, prompting him to head to the hospital and ask his doctors if he was going to die. They weren’t sure but even if he did make it through, it was possible they would have to amputate his arm.

Barry Keoghan and his Saltburn co-star Jacob Elordi got really close during the filming of the Emerald Fennell production.
The two stars were seen very flirtatious during the L.A. premiere of the film and Keoghan confirmed that it’s all very real and not just for cameras.
“I’m really flirtin’, ”Keoghan said in an interview with GQ. “We were constantly close. It ain’t just for the cameras and the premiere[s]. Me and Jacob—he’s like a brother to me, honestly. I think when you’re comfortable with someone, you can be as close as you want, you know what I mean? It’s not like, ‘Oh, don’t come near me’—it’s like, I’m comfortable. When I’m comfortable around people, I’m comfy.”
When asked if he had a similar relationship with friends growing up, he said, “Yeah, no.”

Barry Keoghan has successfully made the jump from Oscar-nominee to internet boyfriend thanks to the success of “Saltburn.” Emerald Fennell’s thriller has turned the 31-year-old actor into a new kind of sex symbol — thanks to scenes in which he slurps Jacob Elordi’s bathwater, has sex with a grave and one full-frontal long take in which he dances to “Murder on the Dancefloor.” The actor told GQ magazine that he’s finally being seen as a man and not just a “freak child” in the aftermath of “Saltburn,” and it feels good. Sometimes you just have to let your manhood all hang out.
“It’s nice, man,” Keoghan said. “It’s nice not just being looked at as the weird-looking guy, the unique feckin’ freaky little freak man-child, freak child-man, whatever you want to call it. It’s nice to see people kind of look at you in that way.

Barry Keoghan knows what it means to have a brush with death, and he recounted his near-fatal battle with necrotizing fasciitis in an interview for GQ’s February cover story. He recovered from the infection just days before filming Martin McDonagh’s 2022 feature The Banshees of Inisherin.
Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, necrotizing fasciitis is a flesh-eating disease caused by a rare bacterial infection, which develops after bacteria enters the body through cuts, scrapes, burns or insect bites. Keoghan stated in his interview that one in five cases is fatal.
Keoghan recalled asking doctors, “But I’m not gonna die, right?” and the medical team telling him, “We don’t know.” For a while, amputation was in consideration.
McDonagh visited Keoghan in the hospital before shooting for Banshees was set to begin, and the filmmaker remembers Keoghan as a picture of calm considering the dire circumstances.

The 2024 BAFTA longlists were revealed on January 5. Three films — “Barbie,” Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Oppenheimer” — lead with 15 mentions apiece. “Poor Things” is right behind at 14 while “Maestro” reaped an even dozen, “Saltburn” came in at 11 and both “All of Us Strangers” and “The Zone of Interest” registered 10 appearances.
How likely are these films to top the leaderboard when BAFTA nominations are announced on Jan. 18? Let’s take a look back at last year to see how much these longlists matter in the end.
Four movies numbered in the double digits on the 2023 longlists: “All Quiet on the Western Front” also merited 15 mentions and “The Banshees of Inisherin” was right behind at 14. “Elvis” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” each earned an even dozen. And four more merited eight mentions apiece: “Aftersun,” “Babylon,” “Tár” and “Top Gun: Maverick.”

The Golden Globes nominated five films this year for both director and screenplay. The Globes only offer one screenplay category rather than splitting into two with original and adapted like most other awards groups. This means that if your film gets into this category, they really, really love your writing.
Writing and directing seem like they would be paired together often but the two awards have only been awarded to the same film once in the last decade. That was in 2017 when Damien Chazelle won both awards for “La La Land,” which also won Best Comedy/Musical Picture. The other nine years saw a split. Here’s the breakdown.
In 2014, Spike Jonze won Best Screenplay for “Her” while Alfonso Cuarón emerged victorious in the directing race for “Gravity.” The year later, Richard Linklater took home Best Director for “Boyhood” while four writers won for “Birdman:” Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone,...

Ah, Christmas! While the notion of peace of earth and goodwill towards men makes this the warmest time of the year, Christmas isn’t always so cozy on the silver screen. Many of our favourite action flicks use the holidays as a backdrop, with some of them using the yuletide setting to add an extra layer of hopelessness to the proceedings – I’m looking at you, First Blood. Greta Gerwig could be in line for a hattrick of Oscar nominations this year for Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay for her marvelous work on Warner Bros.’s “Barbie.” The multi-hyphenate co-wrote the movie with her partner, Noah Baumbach, while she brought to life the world of Barbie as a visionary helmer of one of the biggest films of the year. She has reaped three Oscar bids to date for two of her previous pictures. Let’s take a closer look at those races.
Her first bids came in 2018 for “Lady Bird,” which tells the story of a 17-year-old girl who comes of age in Sacramento, California, in 2002. Saoirse Ronan stars in the lead role while Timothée Chalamet, Lucas Hedges, and Laurie Metcalf also featured. “Lady Bird” was a critical darling, which meant that Gerwig enjoyed a good time at the Critics Choice Awards, securing nominations for both Original Screenplay and Director.

Barbie director Greta Gerwig received her first best director Golden Globe nomination Monday, following years past in which she was snubbed for her films Lady Bird and Little Women.
Gerwig was nominated alongside Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Celine Song (Past Lives), Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Bradley Cooper (Maestro) and Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things). Gerwig also received a best original screenplay nomination alongside Noah Baumbach for Barbie. In total, Barbie received nine nominations, including best musical or comedy, best actress for Margot Robbie and best supporting actor for Ryan Gosling.
In 2017, a year which saw Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman and Dee Rees’ Mudbound hit the big screen, Gerwig didn’t receive a nomination for Lady Bird, despite a best picture comedy or musical nomination. Guillermo del Toro, Martin McDonagh, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg received nominations. Natalie Portman, while she was presenting the award to the eventual winner,...
