You asked, and Adam Wingard listened.
Coming off of 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, the filmmaker was keenly aware that critics and audiences wanted even more focus on the MonsterVerse titans, so his sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, features multiple long stretches of runtime that’s exclusively titans, namely Kong and his journey. The giant ape is the main character of Warners’ fifth MonsterVerse film, and Wingard was able to pull off this more titan-heavy story by keeping his cast of human characters to a helpful minimum.
“In the development phase, my motto was ‘simplicity is key.’ And so I knew that if we created a smaller cast, we could create a more intimate story,” Wingard tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We can still spend time with [the human characters], and at the same time, we can spend more time with the monsters and not shortchange one or the other.”

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
In 2013, a home invasion horror movie was released that made a ridiculous amount of money relative to its tiny production budget which helped launch the career of a now-prominent filmmaker. That may sound like "The Purge" but I'm actually talking about "You're Next," the beloved slasher flick that helped to put Adam Wingard on the map. Wingard has since made giant blockbusters like "Godzilla vs. Kong," which helped bring movie theaters back to life in 2021 in the aftermath of the quarantine era of the pandemic. Wingard is now an A-list director, and that journey pretty much starts with this movie.

Adam Wingard Had To Do Some Real-Life Science To Prove Godzilla Vs Kong's Biggest Fight Could Happen
Lampoon the idea of a hollow earth all you want, but let it never be said that the kaiju battle aboard an aircraft carrier in "Godzilla vs. Kong" is scientifically inaccurate. Adam Wingard was coming from a horror background when he signed on to direct the sequel to both "Kong: Skull Island" and "Godzilla: King of the Monsters," and while a creature feature would seem to be right up his alley, this was a giant monster movie, told on a blockbuster scale that Wingard had yet to operate on. There were a lot of practical things to consider, not the least of which is whether it would even be possible for King Kong and Godzilla to fight on top of an aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean without it sinking.
The real meat of the aircraft carrier fight lasts all of 30 seconds in "Godzilla vs. Kong," but it...

Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard is returning to the helm for a sequel that has been shrouded in secrecy for months – all we’ve heard up to this point was that Wingard’s The Guest star Dan Steven had joined the cast, and that was way back in May. But now Warner Bros. and Legendary have sent out a press release to give us more information on this currently untitled addition to the Monsterverse, which is scheduled to reach theatres on March 15, 2024.
The press release reveals that the screenplay for this film was written by Terry Rossio (the Pirates of the Caribbean series), Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight), and Simon Barrett (You’re Next), the three of them crafting a story that

The Amazon horror anthology series “Them” centers on a Black family that experiences terror after moving to a white neighborhood in 1950s Compton. The horror comes in both realistic and supernatural forms as Henry and Lucky Emory battle racist neighbors and otherworldly creatures who intend to drive them out of Compton, if not kill them outright. Scroll down to watch our exclusive interviews with six Emmy contenders from the limited series.
“Them” stars Ashley Thomas and Deborah Ayorinde as Henry and Lucky, while Shahadi Wright Joseph and Melody Hurd play their daughters, who are also haunted by evil spirits. Alison Pill plays Betty, a neighbor of the Emorys who leads the charge in trying to chase them out of their community. Ryan Kwanten rounds out the main cast as George, the milkman whose flirtations with Betty develop into something far more sinister. Like many domestic dramas set in the 1950s,...

The landscape of Amazon Prime Video’s series “Them” is filled with horror from the moment the Emory family moves into their new Compton residence. That fear and tension isn’t limited to the project’s storytelling. As the crafts team members behind the series lay out, they wanted to imbue history and tension into everything surrounding the Emorys and everything they wear.
Costume designer Mari-An Ceo says the many meticulous details in the series’ costuming at times veered into being spoilers themselves. In some cases, those details were tiny. For instance, the villainous Miss Vera’s collar looks like a book, which subtly connects her to little Gracie Jean...

How does one become a production designer? For Tom Hammock (“Them”), it actually started in a most unusual way: he “stumbled into it” by milking spiders for their venom. “I think we really started with color, with the idea that the exterior of all these houses would be fairly uniform and beautiful pastels … And yet with our various Black families that had moved out to Los Angeles, their houses would all be extremely dark inside,” reveals “Them” production designer Tom Hammock about creating a suburban paradise in 1950s California that turns out to be a nightmare for Black families that move there. Writing the sequel to one of the most historic horror films from the past 20 years might sound like a screenwriter’s dream job, but for Simon Barrett, taking on “Blair Witch” was more scary than fun. Having to satisfy millions of fans of a cult film that earned nearly $250 million at the box office in 1999 is a task that would make any writer sweat. Though Barrett already had eight feature film writing credits prior to signing on for the Lionsgate project, he’d never been tasked with writing a studio movie, not to mention a sequel to a horror franchise.

“It was not a fun experience,” the 37-year-old Barrett told IndieWire in a recent interview. “You want it to be as good as it possibly can, and it never is, because that’s the nature of the process.

When I reviewed the original The Blair Witch Project, it was March of 1999. I saw it in Austin, in the apartment of a couple of my friends, thanks to Harry Knowles, who had been sent a VHS copy of the film by the filmmakers during its Sundance run. I went to Austin in February, and Harry had been sitting on his copy, waiting for us to get to town. We were there for the third Quentin Tarantino film festival at the still-young Alamo Drafthouse, and on the last night of the festival, my friends and I were set to hit the road as soon as the movies ended. We were road-tripping, and between the four of us, we figured we’d be able to do the entire drive back to La straight through with no stops for sleep. Harry asked us not to leave town right after the film, though.

Thomas S. Hammock Digs Deep With The Last Survivors
By Terry Keefe
With the growth of technology over the past decade, it’s become possible for literally anybody to record a song, write a book or make a movie. With the inundation of content into the marketplace, it’s become more difficult than ever before for real filmmakers to get their work made, seen and, perhaps most significantly, monetized. Hollywood wants $300 million-budgeted tentpole comic book movies that will play as well in Beijing and New Delhi as they do in Muncie and Canoga Park. The indie film movement, once occupied by names like Quentin Tarantino, P.T. Anderson and Steven Soderbergh during its 1990s heyday, is basically non-existent now, those filmmakers having moved on to big-budget (or at least bigger than their salad days), more epic filmmaking. Many aspiring directors and producers find this landscape to be a bleak one, akin...

In the deserted, drought-stricken world that filmmakers Tom Hammock, Seth Caplan, and Chris Harding created, every role impacted "The Last Survivors." The film revolves around Kendal, a young woman who is trying to find water while protecting herself and her sick companion, Dean, from others fighting for the limited water supply. The producers budgeted their limited funds wisely and brought in Arlie Day to cast the three main roles, which were integral to the film. Casting the right actor for the pivotal role of Kendal (Haley Lu Richardson) was essential. Before hiring a casting director, the producers had seen a few actors for the role. “They just weren’t getting it…She needs this toughness about her, but yet this innocence at the same time,” Day says, noting that Richardson “really brought this vulnerability that [the] other girls didn’t.” Or if they did, “you would never believe that they would...

A recent New York Times article reports that droughts are intensifying across the United States western and southwestern regions, with California, Nevada and Oregon bearing the brunt. Texas is also experiencing drought across much of the state, and prolonged dry conditions put a considerably strain on water supplies for all uses. Many states are using innovative technologies -- aquifer storage and recovery, desalination, water "scalping" -- but are still forced into placing restrictions on water use, with fights over water rights ensuing between local government, landowners and consumers.

Tom Hammock’s post-apocalyptic thriller The Well had a fairly successful festival run, but since Marina didn't love it at Viff, it makes me think it'll likely be a bit old hat for die-hard Pa fans.

The Federighi Films pic is set in a once-lush Oregon valley turned dry by a decade-long drought, where a teenage girl fights to protect the last working well from a greedy water baron. Hammock makes his debut as director after serving as production designer on a number of notable genre indies including All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, You’re Next and The Guest. The Well premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June and will get a theatrical/VOD release early next year through Mpi’s Dark Sky Films.

In a dust stricken valley a teenage girl and her ill boyfriend, fight to survive in a post apocalyptic world where it hasn't rained in a decade. She's camped out on an old farm that has a working well but it's not clear how long Kendal and Dean can survive and avoid detection by both scavengers and a man who has twisted religion for his own means and is slowly taking over the valley by driving out the few remaining families. This is the world of The Well.
I know what you're thinking: been there, done that. Truth is, you're right. What's worse is that Thomas S. Hammock's debut as director doesn't offer a new angle to the story in any sort of way. It's clear from early on how this is going to play out and though The Well does seem to be taking an unexpected turn at...

Hell’s Wells: Hammock’s Debut an Elementary Genre Piece
Environmentally defined dystopias can either be beneficent, as regards a film’s budget, or an incredible boon, generally in reference to either set design or appropriate casting. As a directorial debut, Thomas S. Hammock’s The Well may be a strikingly pared down post apocalyptic exercise, but it might have whittled away a bit too much from its lean narrative structure. Sure to remind audiences of the dusty hell of David Michod’s The Rover, Hammock’s film recalls the Old West as readily as any number of end-of-times predecessors. At times displaying a bit of intrigue with its topical ideas, too much banality and a general lack of tension renders the film as dry as the arid tomb it depicts.

It’s the near future, and the world (or at least this part of it) is suffering from a decade-old drought. Two teens in the newly desert-like state of Oregon struggle to survive on what used to be a family farm — Dean (Booboo Stewart) hides out in the attic, Kendal (Haley Lu Richardson) makes runs to the nearby well for water — but their efforts are hampered by his failing kidneys, a roving band of violent marauders and the well’s dwindling water supply. They have a plane in a nearby barn, but it’s in need of a very specific engine part, and it soon becomes clear that they may not last until that piece is found. Dean’s health grows worse each day, and Carson’s (Jon Gries) gang is stepping up their efforts to eliminate threats to the region’s limited water sources. What’s a teenage girl with moderate shotgun and samurai sword skills...

We’re always on the lookout for new genre releases Daily Dead readers will enjoy and we were recently turned onto An Aurora Grimeon Story: Will o’ the Wisp. With a style that will appeal to fans of Tim Burton and Coraline, the graphic novel was written by Tom Hammock, features artwork by Megan Hutchinson, and was recently released as a hardcover. Here’s a look at the trailer and eight preview pages we’ve been provided with:
“An Aurora Grimeon Story – Will ‘O’ the Wisp is an original graphic novel full of wicked delights and dark things.
This is a curiously morbid tale regarding young Aurora Grimeon, recently orphaned by her parents’ accidental mushroom poisoning. With no other relatives to speak of, Aurora is sent to live with her estranged grandfather on Ossuary Isle, deep in the southern swamps. Aurora sets off with little more than three instructions in...

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this week’s release, Jonathan Levine's “All the Boys Love Mandy Lane” (because certainly according to our lukewarm review it’s hardly the film itself), is the story of the journey it took to get it to U.S. screens. When the trio of college friends behind the initial idea (writer Jacob Forman, production designer Tom Hammock and producer Chad Feehan) managed to pull together the resources to script and make the film, and then sell it to The Weinstein Company in 2006, it must have seemed like the end of a long, hard journey. And yet the struggle to get the film seen in their native country was only beginning, as, despite some positive word of mouth (though mixed reviews generally), TWC/Dimension started to get cold feet about the slasher genre in the wake of the box office failure of “Grindhouse” among other horror offerings,...

There's always one day during the Sdcc when you just shake your head, laugh, and say, "This schedule is ridiculous." Saturday, July 20th, is shaping up to be that day this year.
Horror fans will have a lot of choices to make as the "Bates Motel" panel battles the one-two punch of Godzilla and Seventh Son. Later in the day you'll be faced with choosing to learn more about "True Blood," Telltale's The Walking Dead video game, or "Being Human." Right now 20th Century Fox's presentation that runs at the same time remains "To Be Announced," but once details are revealed, we'll provide an update.
Other panels vying for your attention throughout the day are "The Originals," "Grimm," I, Frankenstein teamed with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (that combination should make for some interesting audience reactions), a look at gameplay from Dead Rising 3 on the Xbox One, more games, comics,...

Water is a precious commodity? Check. Aftermath of Wwiii? Check. Mix Samurai action in? Yes! From director Tom Hammock and Easternlight Films (Arclight) comes something which sounds utterly awesome. I'm really digging these genre mashups. Unfortunately, all we have is a synopsis right now.
The year is 2055, and our once green Earth has been blasted into an endless desert. In the aftermath of World War III, The Water Corporation has been established to ration the most precious resource on the planet. Pipes stretch across the globe, carrying water to those who can afford it. The less fortunate sabotage the vulnerable pipes, stealing what they need to survive.
To protect their interests, the Water Corporation recruit The Weir, an elite unit of warriors, schooled in the ancient way of the Samurai. Once honorable and just, The Weir have descended into a rabble of vicious thugs, killing indiscriminately, terrorizing the scorched sands.
