YouTube could be the key to Will Smith finally earning a Primetime Emmy nomination — or win.
The superstar Formerly Known as the Fresh Prince has been nominated for two Academy Awards, five Golden Globes and one Screen Actors Guild Award, and has won four Grammys (out of eight nominations). Yet a Primetime Emmy nomination has so far eluded Smith.
That’s despite Smith’s long-running stint as the star of the hit 1990s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Smith’s other TV credits include executive producing Upn’s “All of Us.” But neither of those even got him a primetime nod. Smith technically was nominated in 1992 for a Daytime Emmy Award, in the outstanding special class program category for his part in the special “NBA All-Star Stay in School Jam,” but that’s it.
One explanation is obvious: After “Fresh Prince,” Smith mostly turned his attention to film. His...

Raise your hands if you're too terrified to look into the mirror after watching Us. Jordan Peele has done it again, following his incisive social thriller Get Out with the full-blown horror Us, which is already a box office smash (and the source of our existential nightmares). If you're looking for more content from the writer-director-actor extraordinaire, you won't necessarily have to dig through all of his MadTV and Key and Peele sketches. So, what is he doing? The question you should ask is: What isn't he doing?
Peele will lend his voice to Toy Story 4 as Bunny. He'll also appear in the currently filming horror flick Abruptio as Danny across Buffy the Vampire Slayer's James Marsters and Pitch Perfect's Hana Mae Lee.
On top of these parts, Peele has his own production company called Monkeypaw Productions that gives him the resources to create...

There’s hardly a better example of just how overwhelming the TV offerings have gotten than “Weird City.” The new slick and bizarre comedy was co-created by Jordan Peele and “Key and Peele” writer Charlie Sanders, features a stacked cast, and is nonetheless stranded on YouTube Premium (though the first two episodes are available to stream for free). It’s the kind of show that could only exist during Peak TV, when the vast array of options can make room for bigger creative swings; it’s also the kind of show that could, regardless of merit, get lost in the shuffle.
But if you do tune into the six episodes that dropped on Feb. 13, “Weird City” quickly proves itself to be an interesting experiment, at the very least. It takes place in a sci-fi world wherein the “Haves” and “Have Nots” are divided into starkly segregated communities by a literal...

For anyone who stopped watching “Modern Family” around the time it won a fifth Emmy for Best Comedy Series (aka five years ago), let “Weird City’s” premiere remind you why Ed O’Neill has sustained a career far broader than any one grumpy father figure. Sure, he’s been a dad’s dad on two iconic family sitcoms (plus “John From Cincinatti”), but O’Neill can pivot on a dime from amusement to anger, hope to heart-fall, and obliviousness to confusion. It’s this excellent comic timing combined by an eagerness to surprise that comes alive when he’s given material worth getting excited about. And his episode of Jordan Peele’s “Weird City” is pretty damn fun.
Set in a “not so distant future,” the YouTube original series frames its story around a society where the rich and poor are divided by a border wall. The “Haves” live “Above the Line,...

Welcome to “Weird City,” the futuristic metropolis where citizens either live “above” or “below” the line, dating apps dictate your total happiness, and Levar Burton is a seemingly all-knowing being. The YouTube sci-fi series, which hails from co-creators Jordan Peele and Charlie Sanders, kicks off its original six-episode run on Feb. 13 to put a comedic twist on the current anthology series trend.
Each standalone episode features a unique story within the framework of the city itself, with certain characters (like Burton) popping up throughout to thread the narratives together. Meanwhile a slew of guest stars including Ed O’Neill, Mark Hamill, Awkwafina, Laverne Cox and Sara Gilbert help bring the stories to life.
“There are definitely a lot of meta layers going on,” says Sanders, who notes he was largely inspired by Steven Spielberg’s “Amazing Stories” from the mid-1980s. “In each story the main characters are going to have standalone stories,...

Now that the industry is past its beginning-of-the-year overviews (check out IndieWire’s Most Anticipated TV Shows of 2019), February is upon us. As the film world remains focused on last year in the lead up to the Oscars, there’s still plenty of new series on the TV side worthy of attention. As always seems to be the case when looking at the upcoming calendar for a given month, there is a wide range of offerings across streaming, broadcast, and cable. These also traverse different genres, covering both scripted and unscripted shows.
(We do this roundup of new shows pretty much every month — if you missed any of those previous picks, here are some notable TV premieres from October, November, and December of last year.)

Weird City might star all of your faves, but that doesn't make it any less . . . well . . . weird.
The satirical YouTube series comes from the minds of Jordan Peele and former Key & Peele writer Charlie Sanders and is set in the not-too-distant, dystopian future city of Weird. The sprawling metropolis separates its citizens into two definitive sections, getting rid of the middle class entirely: Above the Line (the obscenely wealthy) and Below the Line (the lower class).
Although each of the bizarre, peculiar stories is connected by the mysterious Dr. Negari (LeVar Burton), a mad scientist type who presides over Weird, Weird City is an anthology that embarks on a new, uncomfortably relevant theme with each episode, such as social media addiction and online dating. The series hits YouTube Premium on Feb. 13 and stars Dylan O'Brien, Michael Cera, Awkwafina, Rosario Dawson, Gillian Jacobs, Ed O'Neill, Laverne Cox, Steven Yeun, and Mark Hamill,...

YouTube Premium has released the first trailer for Jordan Peele and Charlie Sanders’ new satirical sci-fi anthology series Weird City.
The series looks like it could be crazy entertaining and it’s a series I’ll definitely be checking out. I really like the fun and strange wackiness of what I’m seeing in this trailer. I know Jordan Peele has become known for his twisted horror film Get Out and his upcoming movie Us, but it’s good to see him involved with comedy again.
As you’ll see, Weird City has an impressive cast of actors that include LeVar Burton, Mark Hamill, Michael Cera, Awkwafina, Rosario Dawson, Dylan O’Brien, Laverne Cox, Steven Yeun, Ed O’Neil, Hannah Simone, Yvette Nicole Brown, Trevor Jackson, and Auli’i Cravalho.

Let’s face it: we’ve all wondered what it would look like to see LeVar Burton get taken up through a pneumatic tube. “Weird City,” an science fiction anthology series arriving on YouTube Premium next month, also casts him as something of a mad scientist, which seems extremely promising. Burton is just one of many notable cast members in the ensemble. Written by Jordan Peele and former “Key & Peele” writer Charlie Sanders, “Weird City” also features appearances by Steven Yeun, Mark Hamill, Gillian Jacobs, Awkwafina, Laverne Cox, Rosario Dawson, and Michael Cera.

Jordan Peele continues his takeover of Hollywood with a new sci-fi anthology TV project called Weird City. The series was recently picked up by YouTube and it sounds like it could be a great show.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

Spike Jonze’s philosophical sci-fi love story Her, and Billy Ray’s harrowing true-life hostage saga Captain Phillips earned best original and adapted screenplays, respectively, from the Writers Guild Awards on Saturday.
In the original category, Her was facing its four rivals for the Oscar: American Hustle, Blue Jasmine, Dallas Buyers Club, and Nebraska, so its victory can be seen as a strong harbinger of where the Academy Award could go on March 2. In anecdotal sampling of Academy members, EW’s Prize Fighter has also determined that Her is far and away the front-runner for this category.

Tonight, the Writers Guild of America presented their awards for excellence in film and television for 2013. All eyes were on their top two categories, Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay, and while the former went to Spike Jonze’s incredible Her as expected, the latter went to Billy Ray’s Captain Phillips, which was completely out of the blue.
Her was widely expected to win due to its immense popularity throughout awards season, taking 20 screenplay wins from groups such as the HFPA and Bfca. However, Captain Phillips was a complete surprise given that it had not managed to win a single screenplay award prior to tonight, but as I’ve said before, it was going to be hard to tell which nominee was the favorite given the fact that the disqualified 12 Years a Slave has been the clear frontrunner throughout the season. However, it’s still quite shocking that Before Midnight...

The series follows Martin’s exploits growing up in a small Irish town in the late eighties and early nineties and is based on O’Dowd’s childhood experiences. “Godfellas”, the fifth of the first season’s six episodes, centers on Martin’s newfound desire to become an altar boy. Amazon.com is quickly burning MTV's "Death Valley" to disc. Produced on demand, this two disc set lists for $19.95 (Srp) and then there is shipping. As an uncensored set, some may wonder just what has not been un-bleeped out.
The only problem with the manufacture on demand program is that it is burned to disc on DVD-r recordable media, a nonpermanent medium. Die-hard tech junkies may not favour this method. The medium will wear out and this format reportedly has a lifespan of less than 5 years through repeated use.
The television series' story from Amazon: "[a] year ago, vampires, werewolves and zombies mysteriously descended upon the streets of California's San Fernando Valley. Death Valley is the dark comedy that follows the cops that capture the monsters, and the camera crew that captures the cops.

This horror fan has been away from MTV's "Death Valley" for awhile now. The latest show called "Partners" got this reviewer back on track as John John (Texas Battle) lies in the hospital after a zombie attack. There is also a mole in the Undead Task Force's ranks who has stolen some weapons. Officer Pierce (Bryce Johnson) is moving in on the rookie cop for a date in the captain's office and the vampires want a peace treaty after the death of Rico (R. J. Cantu). Writer: Jennifer Rice-Genzuk Henry.
The most recent episode of "Death Valley" shown on MTV is "Who, What, When, Werewolf...Why." In this showing, writer Jennifer Rice-Genzuk Henry uses the three story structure again to tell a tale of a werewolf, a vampire and a zombie. John-John (Texas Battle) and Carla (Tania Raymonde) are again on zombie patrol and this time they have to dispose of their own bodies. Kirsten (Caity Lotz) dates a werewolf and Joe (Charlie Sanders) faces a foe from the past. The comedy was mostly lacking in this episode; instead, there are a few more thrills in this short, twenty minute episode.
Kirsten's Bff turns out to be an unregistered werewolf and really the scruffy beard and poofy hair should have given him away. Not to worry, Joe comes to her rescue. As well, this episode celebrates Carla's birthday...

MTV pushes along with their comedy series "Death Valley." In Epis. 6, "The Hottest Day of the Year," there are again three stories, two of which involve zombies. The other story follows Officer Kristen to a vampire turning party. The laughs return as a Mickey Rourke look-a-like is run over several times and the silly jokes seem to bring out the most laughs. This episode has lots of humour in this short twenty minute episode.
John-John (Texas Battle) and Carla (Tania Raymonde) are now being shadowed by an internal affairs officer after the killing of a senior citizen. The new policy called "Pus" puts the protocol into zombie bashing unnecessarily. This leads to the policymaker's death. At the same time, in front of the officer's location, Billy (Bryce Johnson) and Joe (Charlie Sanders) also take on some of the undead via their patrol car.

By this time next week the 2011 New York Comic Con will be wrapping up for another year, but let's not get too far ahead of ourselves -- there are panels to see and toys to buy first! *here be some spoilers.
Director: Drew Daywalt.
Writer: Matthew Lawton.
The new "Death Valley" series from MTV is much like Shakespeare's shortest work, "The Comedy of Errors." Instead of mistaken identities there are mistaken motivations. One character, unknowingly, does not appreciate his partner enough, while Captain Dashell (Bryan Callen) is still struggling to understand his sexuality. This leads to all sorts of awkward dialogue from him: "I regulate my semen count. You want to know how?" or "Do you want me to come in for coffee?" Dashell is completely oblivious to the underlining meta message of homosexuality in his dialogue and John John (Texas Battle) does his best to keep an awkward distance. Other plots points in Epis. 5, "Zombie Fights" include more zombie madness, cage fights, a lost relative found, a cliffhanger ending and a Lloyd Kaufman zombie look-a-like to round out the evining. These subplots and the use of...

"Death Valley" is a welcome addition to the small screen community of horror comedies. Its style is almost like "Seinfeld," a show about nothing, and where this show takes its inspiration from is almost like "Cops." Viewers are riding along in the backseat to witness what the Lapd Undead Task Force does throughout the day.
Cameras are supposed to follow two teams as they deal with vampires, werewolves and zombies that have decided to take up residence in the San Fernando Valley. No explanation is required for these appearances, and for the most part, the citizens have learned to deal with it. The authorities simply organized a special strike force to handle these beasts as though they are another category of criminals. While these officers will not last a moment in an actual police force (they're...

I’ll admit to being vaguely piqued at the prospect of reviewing this movie. The casting certainly appears as a potential recipe for laughs, on paper at least: Ed Helms (The Hangover, Us Office) stars as a fumblingly naïve small-town insurance broker and John C. Reilly (Cyrus, Step Brothers) returns, adding himself to the favoured talent list of director Miguel Arteta – the two shared the bond once previously, on Arteta’s second feature The Good Girl (2002).
Cedar Rapids follows Tim Lippe (Helms) as he leaves his home town for the very first time. Sent to the picturesque Iowan city of the films’ namesake, he is charged with the task of representing his company at an industry renowned insurance conference. Rapidly waylaid by a clique of conference regulars – loveable oaf Dean ‘The Deanzie’ Zeigler (Reilly), bone dry-witted Ronald Wilkes (Isiah Whitlock Jr.) and the seductive Joan Ostrowski-Fox (Anne Heche) – they guide...

Cast: Texas Battle, Bryan Callen, Bryce Johnson, Caity Lotz, Tania Raymonde, and Charlie Sanders.
Episode 2, "Help Us, Help You," is available to watch at the MTV homepage for United States viewers and on the MTV Channel through re-airings for Canadians. Originally shown September 5th, this latest episode of "Death Valley" saw a lot of the same moments from the original. Yet, the show remains inappropriately funny. Gags on one-night stands, a sexually harrassing Police Captain and a theme of homo-eroticism should keep most watchers squirming and laughing in their seats. This is the second episode in a series that sees vampires, werewolves and zombies bounding about the San Fernando Valley. Full of comedy in the initial episode, this second chapter seemed to struggle a little near the end.
