On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Who Knows Why We Make the Memories We Do?
IMDb search results and the monolithic “critical consensus” can tell you what supposedly should come to mind when any given actor comes up in conversation. But every cinephile knows that for whatever reason performers become permanently linked to specific roles in our minds. It’s an indelible, personal assignment that can be sentimentally meaningful (Robin Williams will always be the “Aladdin” Genie in Disney adults’ hearts) — or inexplicable and circumstantial.

Ever since the 1975 horror blockbuster Jaws made us afraid to go into the water, America has had an obsession with sharks. While great whites get most of the attention, any aquatic killer with sharp teeth will usually quench our collective thirst for marine menace. In 1988, Discovery Channel launched Shark Week, a seven day block of programming filled with nature documentaries, celebrity cameos, and aquatic reality TV designed to explore the wide world of sharks. This annual event has been going strong for the past 35 years, working its way into the public consciousness to become a household name. Each summer’s horror offerings usually bring with it one or more films of the Shark Horror subgenre. Featuring the underwater predators as their villains, these movies vary widely in quality and usually sink or swim based on the verisimilitude of their special effects.

Today isn’t actually Day 1 of the strike. Actors have been on the picket lines in solidarity with writers since May 1, but today they hit the streets outside Netflix, Warner Bros., Disney, and elsewhere around town with their own mission, their own existential threats, and their own frustration with the system.
SAG-AFTRA began its strike against the studios at midnight on Friday, and the crowds and incessant honking horns were a reminder that even into the third month of the WGA strike, people are still pissed. As the first dual-union strike to hit Hollywood in over 60 years — yes, since Ronald Reagan was in charge of the guild — the incredible thing is that the messaging is the same now from the actors as it was from the writers over 70 days ago. Both writers and actors demand a living wage that keeps up with the times and a new business model built...

While ‘90s or musical-themed pickets may have helped maintain WGA morale during the first 73 days of their strike, the writers got a much bigger lift on Friday as actors joined them on lines across Los Angeles.
The first official day of the historic SAG-AFTRA strike brings with it the promise of A-listers from the 160,000-member group — or, at the very least, union leader and ascendant folk hero Fran Drescher — as two of Hollywood’s most significant labor groups picket alongside one another for the first time since 1960. Demonstrations were again held at 10 sites around L.A., on a day with temperatures set to climb to 95 degrees in some parts, though Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery were among the bigger targets for crowds. (In New York, where members of WGA East have been picketing for nearly three months, actors joined writers at robust lines in front of Netflix HQ and the Paramount offices in Times Square.

Eugene Levy starred in Schitt’s Creek for six seasons with the show wrapping up in 2020. After almost three years since the show’s finale, some fans have not lost hope of a possible revival.
Levy, who co-created the sitcom with his co-star son Dan Levy, recently said to “never say never” about revisiting the Rose family.

Two married couples, both in the upper echelons of middle-aged. Each couple is bored and disinterested in their own way: he’s too nice, she’s too uptight; he’s too caddish, she’s too wanton. In their desperation, these spouses drift into affairs — sexual, emotional, somewhere in between — all of which are allowed to go under the radar until, that is, their kids decide they maybe, kind of, sort of, just might want to marry each other. Then it all blows up in their faces.
This is the ham-fisted, forced premise of Michael Jacobs’ “Maybe I Do” which, despite its A-list cast, can’t escape its shoddy writing and worse filmmaking. The two married couples in question are Sam (William H. Macy) and Monica (Susan Sarandon), the former’s overt, ho-hum sweetness bucking up against the sensual desire of his wayward wife.

The People We Hate at the Wedding is a comedy movie directed by Claire Scanlon, starring Kristen Bell, Allison Janney and Tony Goldwyn.
Weddings tend to be the kind of celebration where everybody tries to be at their best and everything has to go smoothly, but end up being events where nothing turns out as planned. In this movie both in its story, and its cinematic representation, we are witnessing more or less the same tendency.
Premise
Alice (Kristen Bell), her brother Paul (Ben Platt) and her forever optimistic mother (Allison Janney) travel across the pond to England to attend the wedding of their half-sister, on mom’s side, Eloise (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) with the intention of rekindling their sibling bonds in a more or less grown manner and recover the affection they once had for each other.

The term “romantic comedy” these days covers a lot of light entertainments that only notionally meet the genre requirements: They pivot on relationships while just glancing at romance, and are packed with dialogue that’s zappily delivered but not all that funny. “The People We Hate at the Wedding” is one such nonromcom. Sporting a game cast and efficient sitcommy pacing, it looks and sounds the part just enough to keep you diverted — until you notice, as the credits roll to upbeat electropop, that you haven’t laughed once. Starring Kristen Bell, Ben Platt and Allison Janney as the blundering American relatives lowering the tone of a posh English wedding, this straight-to-streaming Amazon release attempts to bring a faintly risqué, expletive-laden millennial sensibility to Nancy Meyers terrain, and never quite finds the sweet spot.

The first scene Kristen Bell shot in Claire Scanlon’s new comedy, The People We Hate at the Wedding, is one that more than a few might describe as a bit of a nightmare.
“It was 7 a.m. and they threw me in the Thames River,” Bell explained with a smile on Wednesday night while standing on the red carpet in Westwood, host of the Prime Video premiere. “That river is neither warm nor clean but the minute we were done with that scene, we realized, oh, the rest of the movie is going to be a breeze.”
Call it a reward for a dirty job done early, the rest of Bell’s experience on the film played like a “dream come true.” That was thanks, in large part, to her co-stars. Based on the book by Grant Ginder and penned by writer-producer...

A short, patchy, straight-to-streaming piece of semi-amusing content that tries to fit several different romantic-comedies into a single movie that doesn’t have the bandwidth (or the interest) to mine any of them for major sources of romance or comedy, .
Some of them should be so lucky.
At one point, during what can only be described as the worst bachelorette party ever conceived in movies and/or real life, Kristen Bell is submerged in the River Thames on a crisp fall afternoon while dressed in nothing but an American flag bikini (and that’s before the activity goes wrong). At another, Ben Platt pisses on iconic “No Fear, No Die” star Isaach de Bankolé out of spite, which is not a sentence I ever expected to write.

A star-studded cast in front of and behind the camera power “The People We Hate at the Wedding,” Prime Video’s answer to the blockbuster romantic comedy.
Adapted from Grant Ginder’s 2017 novel of the same name, this quirky comedic film stars Oscar and Emmy winner Allison Janney, Golden Globe nominee Kristen Bell and Tge winner Ben Platt, along with César winner Isaach De Bankolé and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” star Cynthia Addai-Robinson. It is written by Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin and Wendy Molyneaux (“Bob’s Burgers”) and directed by Emmy winner Claire Scanlon (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”).
It’s an impressive crew that brings a great deal to the table, but what they don’t manage to bring to this comedy is much of a sense of fun.

To mark the release of the film – which launches on Prime Video – we had the pleasure in speaking to several of the cast-members that make up this production. Below you can watch video interviews with Kristen Bell and Ben Platt paired, as they talk about their real-life friendship and playing siblings within the movie.
We also talk to Cynthia Addai-Robinson who talks about her character and the family dynamics from within the film – while of course talking a little about The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Finally we finish up with Dustin Milligan, and he speaks about improvising, what songs get him on the dancefloor – and naturally a little on Schitt’s Creek, too. Because why not.

In her new movie "The People We Hate at the Wedding," Kristen Bell plays a character who's a major mess. Alice is having an affair with her married boss, she refuses to settle down, and she's working a job she hates. It's quite different from where Bell finds herself - married, with two kids and a thriving career. But she tells Popsugar it still wasn't a stretch to get into her character's mindset.
"I think about making bad decisions each and every day, each and every moment," Bell says. "So it was very easy. There's a properly dysfunctional person that lives inside my head." She adds that the character's surroundings always help too; it was easy for her to channel Alice's insecurities when she's in her sterile office environment talking to her boss, for example.
Bell loves the movie because it's "so heartfelt, but not saccharine." She explains, "It is biting,...

‘The People We Hate at the Wedding’ Trailer: Kristen Bell, Ben Platt, and Allison Janney Cause Chaos
Who else wants to say “I do” to some dysfunctional family hilarity?
In Prime Video’s “The People We Hate at the Wedding,” Ben Platt and Kristen Bell star as outrageous siblings who travel with their optimistic mother (Allison Janney) to the British wedding of their estranged half-sister (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). What could be a way to reconnect proves to only ignite their differences as chaos quickly ensues…and lands the core trio behind bars.
“Eloise is our half-sister, which means that we can half-ass the relationship,” Platt says in the trailer, referencing the bride-to-be.
Written by “Bob’s Burgers” sibling scribes Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin (“The Great North”) and Wendy Molyneux (“Deadpool 3”), “The People We Hate at the Wedding” is directed by Claire Scanlon, who previously helmed episodes of “The Office” and Netflix rom-com “Set It Up.”

"It's wonderful being here with my children, and all their friends." Amazon has revealed a fun trailer for a "raunchy comedy" called The People We Hate At The Wedding, arriving on Prime Video for streaming this November. Adapted from the novel of the same name. Family tensions ramp up among family members in the week leading up to their half-sister's wedding. Struggling American siblings Alice and Paul reluctantly agree to attend the wedding of their estranged, wealthy half-sister in the English countryside alongside their mother, Donna. This sounds crazy and wild and hilarious. Especially with this cast! The ensemble features Allison Janney, Kristen Bell, Ben Platt, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Karan Soni, Dustin Milligan, Tony Goldwyn, Isaach de Bankolé, with Jorma Taccone and Julian Ovenden. This definitely looks like a good film to dump on streaming, despite the funny cast. Did anyone laugh at anything in this trailer? ›››

At every wedding, there are those guests that wreak some kind of havoc. In “The People We Hate at the Wedding,” those guests are Kristen Bell, Ben Platt and Allison Janney — and they know it.
In the first trailer for Prime Video’s upcoming movie, based on the book of the same name, the trio is a family jetting off to England to celebrate the wedding of Eloise (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). Of course, for her siblings Alice and Paul, it’s a bit of a begrudging attendance. As Paul snipes — while apparently standing next to a woman hanging out in an actual garbage can — “Eloise is our half-sister, which means that we can half-ass the relationship.”
Why is the relationship so strained? Well, according to Alice, Eloise is wealthy, and chose to make her life in London. The wedding, it seems, is an effort by Eloise to reunite the family. You...

Now, the wait is over, as the contestants of season two all shared their identities on the sixth episode, which aired on Sept. 16.
"RuPaul's Secret Celebrity Drag Race" is a spinoff of "RuPaul's Drag Race," which has currently run for 14 seasons, not including six "All Star" seasons. In the first season, each episode involved a competition between three different contestants competing in various "Drag Race" challenges. Season one's winners were Jordan Connor, Vanessa Williams, Matt Iseman, Alex Newell, Dustin Milligan, and Hayley Kiyoko. Meanwhile, Jermaine Fowler, Nico Tortorella, Loni Love, Tami Roman, Madison Beer, and Phoebe Robinson were runners-up.

(Welcome to TV, Interrupted, a series where the /Film team remembers, eulogizes, and makes a case for the revival of TV shows we loved that were canceled far too soon.)
Often, the shows we cover here at TV, Interrupted have been off the air for quite a while. We're here for the Hannibals, the Wonderfalls, and even the Carnivàles. But every now and again, a fresh cancellation feels too acutely unfair to ignore, and some shows are worth celebrating -- and pitching to new networks -- before the dust has even settled. "Rutherford Falls" is one of these rare cases. News of the Peacock series' premature demise just broke on Friday, and while its cast and crew are still sharing their own statements about its ending, I'm already falling back into a rewatch of one of the most underrated comfort watches of the past few years.

"Rutherford Falls" has been cancelled. The Native American-led sitcom set in a fictional small town has aired two seasons at Peacock, but today TVLine reports it won't get a third. This is frankly heartbreaking news for anyone who was following the sweet, clever comedy, which is one of only a small handful of American TV shows ever made by and about Native American people. But all hope isn't lost, as series co-creator Sierra Teller Ornelas has shared her intention to find a new home for the series if possible.
The series was made by Ornelas, a Navajo writer and filmmaker, along with star Ed Helms and "Parks and Recreation" and "The Good Place" creator Michael Schur. Unfortunately, though, "Rutherford Falls" never seemed to have the visibility of Schur's other shows, and remained a hidden gem for its two-year run.

Peacock will not be ordering a third season of Rutherford Falls, its comedy series co-created/executive produced by Sierra Teller Ornelas, Ed Helms and Mike Schur. The cancellation of the show, starring Helms and Jana Schmieding, comes two and a half months after the Season 2 premiere June 16. In a statement following the decision, Ornelas indicated that the series will explore finding a new home on another platform.
The critically acclaimed series, hailed for its Native representation both in front of and behind the camera, landed at Peacock in turnaround having been originally developed at Apple TV+. Its cancellation follows Peacock’s decision in late June to scrap Schur’s high-profile Field of Dreams TV series reboot a month before start of production.

In Mack & Rita, 30-year-old writer Mack finds that she has been magically transformed into her 70-year-old self during a wild weekend in Palm Springs.
Elizabeth Lail, who plays Mack, and Dustin Milligan, who plays Jack, recently sat down with uInterview founder Erik Meers to discuss what it was like working with the legendary Diane Keaton, who plays the 70-year-old Mack.
“The whole thing is so surreal,” Milligan (Schmidt’s Creek) shared. “I think all of us were truly blown away that this got to be our lives for a month and a half, or however long we were shooting for. It was such a strange thing to be presented with, ‘Hey, would you want to work on this movie opposite Diane Keaton?’ That surreal aspect of it carried through all the way up to the point of the first scene I had with her. A handful of smaller films will start to test audience enthusiasm for movie theaters without big tentpoles. It’s been a rocky summer for specialty releases, and an uphill climb as arthouses emerge from Covid jitters with franchise films sucking up oxygen and screens. But superheroes are on hiatus.
“There isn’t giant competition from tentpoles,” said Howard Cohen, co-president of Roadside Attractions. “On balance, it’s good. Obviously, if you have Top Gun, it sucks the air out of the marketplace. It’s still better — for the specialty market — to have three or four indies than one giant release. Exhibitors are antsy about the sudden dearth of new wide releases this month and next, but they’ve also been asking for more box office breadth.

When it comes to body-swap stories, there’s always the typical hurdles — figuring out what to do at work, how to avoid friends and family, etc. — but the biggest one tends to be the matter of the love interest, who often falls for the younger person in the older person’s body. This holds true in “Mack & Rita,” but you know what? Diane Keaton loved getting to kiss that love interest.
Here’s how it goes down. During her best friend’s bachelorette weekend, 30-year-old Mack (Elizabeth Lail) finds herself exhausted by the partying. She’s always considered herself an old woman, and having to act like she enjoys the shenanigans of typical 30-year-olds is becoming cumbersome. So, when she finds herself in a “past life regression” pop-up tent, Mack has a bit of meltdown, claiming that her true self is a 70-year-old woman.

I’ve you’ve got a bit of cinema nostalgia in your psyche, then this week’s new (but also old) release just might be your movie memory escape route. This flick’s plot has its roots in lots of early film comedies. I’ll offer a bit of a personal spin as my earliest movie theatre memory is seeing Goodbye Charlie in which the late womanizing Bff of Tony Curtis returns as Debbie Reynolds, a gender-flip reused 17 years later in the Blake Edwards spoof Switch. Speaking of age, that was the big variation of that concept that really took hold in the 1980s with fathers becoming their sons and vice-versa in Like Father Like Son and, well, Vice Versa. But the big one was 1988’s Big that veered away a bit in that a young lad suddenly became a 30-something Tom Hanks. Of course, the idea was exploited in...

Attention, aspiring screenwriters: Diane Keaton wants to play your creepy villain. Long the queen of comedy, the actress said she is open to playing “types,” provided the script is good. “I really like working, so I wouldn’t mind doing any types, at this point, it’d be fun,” Keaton said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “I could play some hideous person. Any creep. A killer. I’d be happy to look at it. Give me a chance. Whatever’s out there, that I like, I would take it.”
Since first making her name in classics like “The Godfather” and “Annie Hall,” the actress has carved out her niche as Hollywood’s go-to for charming goofballs, practically trademarking her scattered earnestness and bubbly lilt. While it’s intriguing to imagine those ineffable Keaton qualities mapped onto a power hungry witch or maniacal killer, her latest role is much more in her wheelhouse.

“Mack & Rita,” the third film by Sundance darling Katie Aselton, is Mack (Elizabeth Lail), an awkward author turned reluctant influencer, describes herself as a “70-year-old in the body of a 30-year-old.” She tiptoes through life terrified to be out of step with her cohorts’ harsh judgments. Here, according to screenwriters Madeline Walter and Paul Welsh, millennials recoil at reading, diners, scarves, carpeting, silence, sensible shoes, chain restaurants and non-conformity. In one scene, 50 of millennials don’t even understand the word “lothario.”
Exhausted from the pressure to sport thigh-high, spike-heeled snakeskin boots to a bottomless mimosa brunch, Mack stumbles across a shady huckster (“Red Rocket” star Simon Rex), collapses in his regression tank — and emerges in the body of Diane Keaton. When we think of old age, we think of wisdom (charitably) or frailty (less charitably), the weathered faces of elders showing us our future. Or consider a more spritely vision of the aging process: Think of colorful scarves and oversized knits. What about silk robes and high-collared shirts? Maybe a glass of red wine on ice?
This is the paradise that retirement age has to offer not our society’s aged, but rather Mack, the frazzled “old soul” at the center of Katie Aselton’s age-swap comedy “Mack & Rita.”
Written by Madeline Walter and Paul Welsh (both alums of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), the gentle film takes quirky introvert Mack out of her comfort zone of books and linen clothing and into her best friend Carla’s bachelorette party. It’s there that Mack realizes just how unlike other girls she really is, balking at the non-stop parade of selfies and mimosas.

For the 30-year-old at the center of Mack & Rita, a repurposed tanning bed and a New Age charlatan’s mumbo-jumbo summon body-switch magic: She emerges from the gussied-up contraption as the older woman she believes she truly is. The good news for the audience is that the septuagenarian is played by Diane Keaton. For Keaton, the movie is better news than Poms, but still a hit-and-miss affair. At times disarming, at others plain silly, it takes a few daring leaps without quite avoiding middle-of-the-road sitcom territory.
This makes sense given that screenwriters Madeline Walter and Paul Welsh are vets of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Actor-turned-filmmaker Katie Aselton (Black Rock, The Freebie), who played Keaton’s daughter in Book Club, directs the material with a sunshiny SoCal sensibility and an appreciation of the terrific comic cast, though more than a few barely escape being wasted. If there’s magic here,...

"Freed from the constraints of other people's expectations, Rita comes into her own, becoming an unlikely social media sensation" and sparking a tentative romance. The film's ensemble cast includes Taylour Paige, Loretta Devine, Simon Rex, Dustin Milligan, Amy Hill, Lois Smith, Wendie Malick, Patti Harrison, Martin Short, Addie Weyrich, Aimee Carrero,...
