It took a village to bring Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” to life and into homes.
The Middle-earth fantasy drama wowed Emmy voters with its craft- work, scoring nominations in main-title design, prosthetic makeup, fantasy/sci-fi costumes, sound editing, special visual effects and original main-title theme music. Set thousands of years before the Third Age of the Peter Jackson-helmed “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy, the first season introduced viewers to elves, dwarves, orcs and Harfoots (one of three hobbit races) during a time of prosperity and relative peace.
Costume designer Kate Hawley and her team built more than 2,000 outfits. By using vegetable dyes as well as berry stains, she achieved unique shades and tones for her costumes.

The detail in costume design can define a character — especially for Amazon Prime’s epic “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” and its retro “Daisy Jones & the Six.”
Whether creating costumes for sea guards and Harfoots, “Lotr” costume designer Kate Hawley created over 2,000 outfits for the series. Hawley used blue rather extensively in stones and costumes to reflect the regal presence of Morfydd Clark’s elf, Galadriel, and Cynthia Addai-Robinson’s Míriel, Queen-Regent of Númenor.

She created garments for the nomadic Harfoots that would shield them at night. The idea was that, like wild animals, they avoid detection from perceived enemies by just sitting still and blending into their environment.
While she drew on author J.R.R. Tolkien’s books for inspiration, Hawley also looked at 1920s Expressionist films and Greek armor and statues.

Costume designer Kate Hawley and production designer Ramsey Avery were thrilled to join a talented team of creators and artists for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” Prime Video’s sprawling fantasy series.
“Rings of Power,” with a price tag that reportedly could hit 1 billion both for the rights and the production of a planned five seasons, is the most expensive television series ever produced. The overall arc tells the story of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth in the Second Age, thousands of years before the Third Age of the Peter Jackson-helmed “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy. The first season introduced viewers to elves, dwarves, orcs and Harfoots one of three hobbit races) during a time of prosperity and relative peace.
When Avery first sat down with showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, they had several design goals.
“A lot of high fantasy is stylized.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Episode 4, “The Great Wave.”]
“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is the product of an endless supply of resources. For all its grandeur and detail and physical craft on display, there’s one thing that the show has had in the early part of its run that’s almost always a lot harder to pin down: timing.
Take the series’ most recent episode, which finds Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) in a verbal showdown with Queen Regent Miriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). With fierce conviction, Galadriel proclaims, “There is a tempest in me that has swept me to this island for a reason, and it will not be quelled by you, Regent.” A hard cut to her being put inside a Númenórean holding cell. Against the backdrop of a real, growing threat, “Rings of Power” still finds room for a well-placed comic beat.

When you first meet Elanor “Nori” Brandyfoot (Markella Kavenaugh) and Poppy Proudfellow (Megan Richards) in Amazon’s “Lord of the Rings” prequel series “The Rings of Power,” another famous duo comes to mind. Nori and Poppy, after all, are Harfoots, ancestors of Hobbits. Nori is adventurous; Poppy is nervous. They come off instantly as this Tolkien adaptation’s version of Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee, the pair that would ultimately destroy the One Ring, played in the films by Elijah Wood and Sean Astin.
But co-showrunner Patrick McKay says that’s not really who they had in mind when writing these short, hairy-footed friends. “I have to tell you, what we talked about was Lucy Ricardo and Ethel Mertz,” he said to IndieWire, referencing the “I Love Lucy” pals. Of course, McKay admits that he would probably also make the Frodo and Sam analogy too. It’s there for the taking.

It took a village — and several hours a day — to transform “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” actor Owain Arthur into Prince Durin IV for the Amazon Prime Video series launching Sept. 2.
The Peter Jackson films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” brought Middle Earth to life and established an elaborately detailed style for its inhabitants. The new series, which cost 462 million for the first season alone, brings a similar cinematic blockbuster quality to the small screen. Set in the Second Age of Middle Earth, it introduces a new world of characters, including Durin IV, who leads a clan of dwarves known as Longbeards.
Hair and makeup department head Jane O’Kane wanted Durin IV “to be larger than life and to have a big presence in a room amongst the heightened elves.” It took layer upon layer of makeup and hair, and plenty of glue,...

The world’s most ambitious corporation is making the world’s biggest TV show. Amazon is hard at work on “The Lord of the Rings,” the series adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary epic fantasy franchise, which was previously adapted into the equally beloved “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy and the “Hobbit” trilogy, as well as many other adaptations. This will be the first time “Lotr” is being made into an ongoing TV series. It’s going to be a big deal. And by “big deal,” we mean “cost over a billion dollars to make.” Amazon paid $250 million for the rights alone, in a deal the attorney who negotiated it called “the most complicated deal I’ve ever seen.”
The show was announced in 2017. The eight-episode first season is in production now, and the second will start shooting soon after. The series is expected to run for five seasons.

Nearly four years later and folks still get annoyed about Suicide Squad. Alongside its controversial depiction of the Joker and nonsensical plot, the sexualization of Harley Quinn is one of the most widely criticized elements. Interestingly, with the benefit of some hindsight, director David Ayer has been addressing fan complaints about his movie head-on of late, particularly its portrayal of Harley.
Ayer has previously apologized over accusations that Harley was over-sexualized in SS, admitting that he’s trying to increase his understanding of these matters all the time. About a month later, he’s been on the receiving end of more harsh words from users on Twitter and has had to defend himself and explain his viewpoint even further.

No one knows Middle-earth quite like Peter Jackson does, so it’s not hard to see why Amazon Studios was interested in roping the Kiwi director in for their lavish Lord of the Rings TV series.
The award winning filmmaker has already gone on record though to say that he’s happy that he’s no longer tied up with Middle-earth and all of its many characters and storylines. And, frankly, after putting together six fantasy blockbusters based on Tolkien’s work, you can hardly blame him.
But even without Jackson’s involvement, Amazon has still managed to assemble quite an impressive creative team for the series, from Game of Thrones producers and writers to folks who worked on major motion pictures like The Last Jedi and The Aviator. Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings” TV series has set its fellowship — er, creative and producing teams, for its adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, led by showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, the studio said during the Television Critics Association press tour Saturday.
Set in Middle-earth during the Second Age, the small-screen adaptation will explore new storylines preceding Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring.” Amazon Studios has a multi-season commitment for the show, and the deal also includes a potential spinoff series.

From director David Ayer comes Suicide Squad, starring Oscar nominee Will Smith, Oscar winner Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman and Oscar nominee Viola Davis.
It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super-Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
Written and directed by Ayer based on the characters from DC, the film also stars Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz,...

It's sort of crazy to think that the Comic-Con trailer for Suicide Squad came out a full year ago. We've been analyzing trailers, posters, and photos from this movie for over a year, and we're finally getting down to the last few days before the film's theatrical release. Just this morning, Warner Bros. released a new trailer for the film, and I'm sure we'll be seeing even more TV spots arriving in the coming days. In the meantime, though, check out these two alternate costume options for Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn from a scan of a new EW print issue that the team over at ComicBookResources did. These are a couple of pieces of concept art from costume designer Kate Hawley, and Cbr explains what's found in the EW article that came along with the photos.

As the much anticipated release of Suicide Squad continues to approach, Entertainment Weekly has once again spoiled us with new images, this time in the form of concept art. Taken from their July 22 Comic-Con issue, these two pieces of artwork offer a somewhat different look at the enormously popular Harley Quinn.
Despite what any stubborn purists may have to say, the look adopted by Margot Robbie in this film has already received a rather warm welcome. If merchandise flying off shelves at Hot Topic and other retailers weren’t proof enough, just ask the myriad of cosplayers I’ve seen emulating Robbie at comic book conventions, nightclubs and various other events that I’ve attended this year. It truly is the Summer of Harley.

But even though I’m perfectly fine with the end result, I can’t help but think these conceptual images look pretty cool.

While very different from the classic jester's uniform she typically sports in the comics, Harley Quinn's new red and blue design for Suicide Squad was well-liked by many fans. Some new concept art has now made its way online, showing some of the alternate designs for Harley in the film. Entertainment Weekly caught up with costume designer Kate Hawley, who said that Harley’s costumes were inspired by looking at Instagram accounts of Mexican drug cartels and the attire that rock and roll icons like Debbie Harry, Courtney Love, and Patti Smith wore. This is similar to the Joker, who was also qoted to be inspired by Instagram drug lords. Despite being the Joker's lackey, Hawley said that Harley’s sex appeal came from her own sense of style, and that she didn’t dress sexy to impress the Joker. “She’s a girl’s hero,” Hawley said. “It...

Set visits are like a blind date. You know a little about them before you show up, but you’re never really sure what you’re going to get until it’s too late to back out. Which is how I found myself in Toronto in June of 2015 asking director David Ayer just what he was thinking when designing costumes for the women of Suicide Squad. After all, the men are in armor and or at least fully-clothed (even Killer Croc!), but all of the women are baring skin. I asked Ayer what the deal was because it was a little disheartening. “I just wanted to see Waller in a bikini. I mean really that drove everything for me. [Laughs.] For me it's, if you look at the aesthetic of comic books and you look at how the imagery of it and sort of what it means and what it does...

The blood flows in the lavish Crimson Peak, a Lance Armstrong biopic sticks in first gear and Michel Hazanavicius is all talk, sadly…
When Amicus Productions released The House That Dripped Blood in 1971, it hardly capitalised on the lurid promise of the title. It must have stuck with Guillermo del Toro, however: he has beautifully literalised the image in Crimson Peak (Universal, 15), a sweeping, swollen haunted house horror in which bricks and mortar become flesh and bone, veritably streaming with the ketchup-coloured residue of dead residents. Allerdale Hall, the crumbling Cumbrian mansion owned by dashing but damaged inventor Thomas (Tom Hiddleston) and his emotionally corseted sister Lucille (Jessica Chastain), is like Daphne du Maurier’s Manderley turned inside out; the ghosted gothic love story it houses, too, plays like a disarranged Rebecca, its most intense surges of feeling gushing from unexpected trapdoors.

I am such an admirer of Guillermo del Toro that I want his films to be as great as he is. But just as del Toro values honesty in his relationship with his filmmaking compadres Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu, I have to be straightforward in evaluating Crimson Peak: it’s a disappointment. On the plus side, the film is a feast for the eyes. Thomas E. Sanders’ production design and Kate Hawley’s costumes are sumptuous beyond description. Obviously they and their collaborators took their cues from del Toro, whose visual imagination is without rival. This gothic ghost story/ romance offers a broad canvas, from the interior of a Victorian home...

A moldering manor house, a young virgin with a predilection for ornate nightgowns and dark passages, and an aristocratic family hiding some truly terrible secrets are just some of the ingredients of Guillermo del Toro‘s “Crimson Peak.” The insanely lush Gothic romance and ghost story plays like a hitherto unrecorded collaboration between Edgar Allan Poe, Edith Wharton, the designers of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion and whoever directed all those Bonnie Tyler music videos in the 1980s. And while the film boasts a talented ensemble, let’s give credit to the film’s real star: costume designer Kate Hawley (“Edge of Tomorrow”), who drapes the.

Manuel here to get your Friday started with some to-die for shots of two of our greatest working actresses. We’ve had behind the scenes looks at Kate Winslet’s The Dressmaker (see more of rugby-playing Liam Hemsworth and Kate in Australia here) and of Jessica Chastain’s Crimson Peak (see more of Chastain and Tom Hiddleston shooting in pseudo Burtonian drag here) but this week we finally got to see some polished official photos from their respective films.
Here is Kate looking ravishing as Myrtle “Tilly” Dunnage in The Dressmaker (which just wrapped production). The film follows Tilly’s return to her rural Australian town where she uses her haute couture skills to help exact revenge on those who wronged her (or so the plot description tells me). Sounds gothic and lurid and gorgeous and precisely what I’d get from this pic. Anyone read the novel? Directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse,...

Why, hello there Jessica Chastain. What a lovely and dark dress you have on. It complements the creepy stairwell you are standing in wonderfully. According to a report over at Indiewire this is our first look at Chastain as Lady Lucille Sharpe in wardrobe for Guillermo Del Toro's Gothic chiller Crimson Peak. It is everything that we have come to expect from Gothic cinema. The costume was designed by Kate Hawley who worked with Del Toro on Pacific Rim and has moved on to Suicide Squad since. In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house...

The Hollywood Reporter have a brief update about the current status of David Ayer's Suicide Squad, and reveal that the plan is to shoot the DC Comics adaptation in Toronto. With a working title of "Bravo 14", pre-production is set to begin in February at Pinewood Toronto Studios. Filming itself will apparently take place in and around Toronto from mid-April to September. Exciting times! The site also adds that Jai Courtney, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto are "in the final stages of talks for roles" and add that "Colin Wilson is producing." If IMDb is to be believed, Fury's Roman Vasyanov will serve as cinematographer and Kate Hawley (Edge of Tomorrow) is going to be the movie's costume designer. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ sci-fi thriller Edge Of Tomorrow, under the direction of Doug Liman (“The Bourne Identity,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”).
The epic action of Edge Of Tomorrow unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Check out the trailer below.
Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

Director Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim was always bound to be a detailed visual feast of FX, sets and costume design. Nonetheless the real main players in this film wear no costumes at all, the kaiju (Japanese for ‘strange beast’) and the tower-block sized Jaeger robots (German for ‘hunter’) built to defend Earth from their attacks. As such it fell to costume designer Kate Hawley, fresh from The Hobbit’s design team, to emphasise the humanity of Pacific Rim’s smaller-scale, flesh and blood characters.
Hawley’s job was made extra difficult because most of these characters are involved in the military Pan Pacific Defence Corps, and yet we arrive (intro excluded) at the end of their story, when funding has ceased and they are cast loose from official channels. Consequently we see a resistance group of scientists, technicians, engineers and pilots; a background cast wearing muted work clothes,...

I just wanted to give you a heads up that Tom Cruise's new sci-fi film All You Need is Kill has been re-titled Edge of Tomorrow, and a badass new poster has been released for it!
Personally I think All You Need is Kill is a much better title. Edge of Tomorrow sounds like a basic, boring movie title for a film I wouldn't be interested in seeing. It also sounds like a film Roland Emmerich would direct.
Warner Bros. has announced that they are officially bringing the movie to Comic-Con, and they will give fans a look at the first footage from the Doug Liman-directed film. I can't wait to see it! Especially after seeing this poster. Here is the press release with all of the details:
