I wonder what percentage of action movies rely on our innate human desire to avenge a wrong? That premise serves many genres – Westerns, martial arts, period and contemporary crime, etc. They range from low-key Everyman protagonists to hardcore splatterfests. This quiet little offering is a fine example of the former.
Vengeance Is Mine opens with an armed robbery and escape by four masked thugs in an SUV. Cut to Harry (Con O’Neill), a severely depressed man living on a cot in a church basement, in exchange for menial services. He considers suicide. We gradually learn that his state is the result of helplessly witnessing his wife and daughter being killed by those thugs’ vehicle during their escape. Harry has spent years waiting for a hired detective to discover who they were, since he’d only...

"It is necessary to have wished for death in order to know how good it is to live." Vertical Ent. has released an official US trailer for a British action thriller titled Vengeance is Mine, both written and directed by UK filmmaker Hadi Hajaig. Not to be confused with the 1979 Japanese film also titled Vengeance Is Mine, or the recent Indonesian film called Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash, this is a brutal tale of revenge. Harry is still struggling to come to terms with the murder of his wife and daughter 5 years previously. When he discovers the whereabouts of the killers he awakens from his grief and, like an avenging angel resolves to never stop until they are all dead. Don't mess with Harry. Vengeance is Mine stars Con O'Neill, Sarah-Jane Potts, Anton Saunders, Ricky Grover, and Peter Pedrero. Not the most original story, but this has some wicked cool shots in it,...

Exclusive: Con O’Neill (Chernobyl) and Sarah Jane Potts (Kinky Boots) lead cast in UK revenge-thriller Don’t Leave Me, the latest film from Cleanskin and Blue Iguana writer-director Hadi Hajaig.
UK outfit Amp International has boarded world sales on the feature about a suicidal man, now working as a church handyman and soup kitchen worker, who tracks the killers of his wife and daughter.
The film started shooting this week in and around London. Hajaig is producing.
Hajaig, whose previous film Blue Iguana starred Oscar winner Sam Rockwell, commented, “I wanted to make a smart, brooding piece of genre with minimal dialogue and brutal action.”
Amp’s recent credits include Anna And The Apocalypse, The Endless, Hajaig’s Blue Iguana, Ana starring Andy Garcia and Dafne Keen, and Amulet, which was written and directed by Romola Garai. Hajaig has also been developing New York and Thailand-based thriller All Mine Enemies.

Opening a crime film, an indie crime film for that matter, in a diner only screams to remind audiences of Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, setting a high bar for the film to come. Which, frankly, means your film better live up to that expectation… Thankfully Blue Iguana does.

Everyone remembers the best among the scrappy 1980s films that started American “indie film” in earnest — particularly those over-stylized, wink-wink comedies by Jim Jarmusch, Susan Seidelman, Alexandre Rockwell, and so on that were among the movement’s most influential early successes. Similarly, few could forget how much fun “Reservoir Dogs” and “Pulp Fiction” were, revitalizing the crime-caper genre with wit and outsized directorial personality.
What we’d prefer to forget is just how many labored comedy quirkfests and effortfully wiseass capers the above films “inspired” for years afterward — wannabe movies straining for the same qualities without any original inspiration, failing to find their own voice while deliberately or unconsciously mimicking somebody else’s. The majority of these pale imitations wound up a blip on the Sundance Festival radar — if they were lucky — then were forgotten ever after.
Unfortunately, those happily buried cinematic memories come rolling back with the arrival of “Blue Iguana,...

Sam Rockwell is worth seeing in anything, no matter how dire the circumstances in which the acting dynamo might find himself trapped. But Blue Iguana makes the freshly minted Oscar winner (for his totally worthy performance in Three Billboards) work way too hard to cut through the film’s blatant stupidity and buffet of clichés. Blue Iguana desperately seeks to be one of those artfully disreputable crime thrillers with a B-movie kick that’s hard to resist (think: Jonathan Demme’s Something Wild and George Armitage’s Miami Blues). I think not.

A kooky, disposable caper that’s light on charm and heavy on nonsense, Hadi Hajaig’s “Blue Iguana” was conceived as a throwback to the golden age of VHS crime-comedies — as the kind of freewheeling late-80s’ fare in which anything could happen because everything turned a profit on home video. And maybe, if you squint really hard, you can see the faintest shades of films like “Something Wild” or “Miami Blues” mixed into this manic parade of dumb criminals and even dumber plotting. Alas, anybody who watches Hajaig’s movie that closely will be more transfixed by the enormous gap between what the writer-director was going for and what he ultimately got.

Sam Rockwell and Ben Schwartz have teamed up for a new action crime comedy called Blue Iguana and today we have a trailer for you to check out. The two actors star as a couple of small-time crooks on parole and while working at a New York diner an English lawyer walks into their lives and offers them a "simple" job to steal a rare jewel in London. They see this as a way to change their lives but as you'd expect they find themselves in way over their head.
I'll watch anything that Sam Rockwell is in, and while this doesn't look like his best work, there's still a chance that maybe it could end up being a fun film. The movie was directed by British director Hadi Hajaig and this is the synopsis:

"Steal it back, collect the reward." Screen Media Films has debuted the official trailer for a crime comedy titled Blue Iguana, the latest film from British director Hadi Hajaig. Blue Iguana stars Ben Schwartz and Sam Rockwell as small-time crooks on parole and working in a New York diner. Their dead-end lives are soon turned upside down when an English lawyer walks into the diner with an offer they can't refuse: a "simple" job to steal a rare jewel in London. Hijinks and chaos ensue, of course. The cast includes Phoebe Fox, Simon Callow, Amanda Donohoe, Peter Ferdinando, and Anton Saunders. This looks like a really bad, wannabe Snatch that will probably be a waste of time to sit through. Watch out. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Hadi Hajaig's Blue Iguana, direct from YouTube: Small time New York crooks Eddie (Sam Rockwell) and Paul (Ben Schwartz) are in...

Ben Schwartz is prolific. Best known for his work as an actor, in projects such as House Of Lies, BoJack Horseman, Parks And Recreation, and Turbo, he is also a writer (Robot Chicken, The Oscars), a producer (Funny Or Die Presents…, Bronx World Travellers), and director (CollegeHumor Originals). He is also the proud owner of a Primetime Emmy Award for writing music and lyrics for the 81st Annual Academy Awards. But now, he has really hit the big time, because he’s about to star in Blue Iguana with Sam Rockwell.
Soon to be written, directed and produced by Hadi Hajaig (Cleanskin), Blue Iguana is characterized as a dark comedy thriller that’s also a love story. Plot details remain scarce, but the synopsis, as outlined on IMDb, gives some indication of what to expect.
“He’s a low level criminal with no future and just out of prison. She’s a low level lawyer never noticed by others – a lost soul without a life. Their anger and hostility makes them serious criminals. Love happens in the strangest of places.”
Blue Iguana happens in London shortly, and has Sam Rockwell locked in for the lead role – the “low level criminal with no future.” The nature of the role now associated with Ben Schwartz is not currently known, but it is probably a safe bet that he will be playing something akin to “Best Friend No 1.”
If his friendship is with Sam Rockwell, this promises some excellent comedy, as the respective style of the two actors certainly would seem to complement each other – Rockwell with his laid back, mildly irritated delivery, and Ben Schwartz with his trademark self-assured swagger.
The big question is, who will play the “low level lawyer never noticed by others?” This is the key role at this point, as the actress concerned will need to go toe-to-toe with the comedic skill of both Rockwell and Schwartz. My first choice would be Kathryn Hahn – simply because she would be able to play anger and hostility opposite Sam Rockwell with hilarious conviction. Alternatively, I think it’s about time Charlyne Yi got a shot at a lead role. Her measured delivery and deadpan comedy style would serve this role, and this cast, well. Whichever actress lands the part, we should hear the announcement soon, as cameras are set to roll on Blue Iguana in July.

I thought about starting this with some note about living in a world where literature is increasingly unappreciated — but nobody really needs that so I’ll instead just relate The Wrap‘s story that Ramin Bahrani is looking to follow 99 Homes with an adaptation of Ray Bradbury‘s perennial sci-fi classic Fahrenheit 451. The project has been in WB’s pipeline for some time, in semi-recent years attracting the likes of Mel Gibson and Frank Darabont with its dystopian future and central figure, Guy Montag, a “fireman” whose main task is to burn the written word.

Ewan (Sean Bean) has returned to the UK after serving in the armed forces overseas and now works for British Intelligence. After the release of one of the highest-grossing British films in recent years last week with The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, we’ve got an entirely different selection lining the shelves this week with John Carter, one of the year’s biggest blockbusters, now available for your home entertainment.
And beside it, a critically acclaimed new Us series, Falling Skies, produced by none other than Steven Spielberg, which aired in the States last summer.
Not only that, but we have an excellent Blu-ray Steelbook re-release of Batman Begins / The Dark Knight, so needless to say, it’s a good week to be a Batman fan and/or steelbook collector.
My picks of the week:
Andrew Stanton’s John Carter & Kenneth Lonergan’s Margaret.
Falling Skies – Season 1.
And for good measure, the Blu-ray re-releases of Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins / The Dark Knight & Kevin Smith’s Mallrats & Ben Stiller’s Zoolander.

By definition “cleanskin” is the name given to a terrorist that is unknown, does not have a history that shows them to be a threat. If anything this makes them the perfect person to enact an attack. The film Cleanskin is a look at this type of person who is planning an attack, while we also see the viewpoint of the people trying to stop them.
After failing on an undercover mission to stop explosives getting into the wrong hands Ewan a secret service agent finds it his task to discover who stole it and to stop them using it for suicide bombings. In the different perspective we see the manipulation of Ash, a man disillusioned by the life in the United Kingdom where he is branded just for his beliefs and his perceived nationality.

Despite the technological might of Pixar, this Martian epic still feels closer to retro fare such as Flash Gordon or Dune. It's a cumbersome hero's journey fully of silly names, skimpy costumes and princesses in peril – stuff we've seen recycled so many times since Edgar Rice Burroughs first wrote this, it now feels laughably quaint. Still, it's always fun to see an expensively rendered alien world, even if cheesy myth-making comes with the territory.
Trishna (15)
(Michael Winterbottom, 2011, UK) Freida Pinto, Riz Ahmed, Roshan Seth. 113 mins
Hardy's Tess looks a comfortable fit with modern-day India in this naturalistic drama, which takes liberties with the text but finds new resonances, as Pinto's subdued villager struggles to find happiness with a wealthy young British-Indian.
The Raven (15)
(James McTeigue, 2012, Us) John Cusack, Alice Eve, Luke Evans.
(Andrew Stanton, 2012, Us) Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Mark Strong, Dominic West, Samantha Morton, Ciarán Hinds. 132 mins

Following his 2006 feature debut, Puritan, director Hadi Hajaig has turned to the murky and duplicitous world of 21st century terrorism with his London set thriller Cleanskin, released in UK cinemas from tomorrow (Friday).
An independently financed film, it has been picked up for distribution by Warner Brothers, which meant a suitably packed junket at the Mayfair Hotel (also featured in the film), and the usual slight delays when faced with wrangling a bunch of journos.
Initially set to chat only with Sean Bean, starring as darkly motivated government agent Ewan, and Abhin Galeya as his nemesis Ash, we also managed to get a sit down with Hadi himself to discuss the ins and outs of story, character, motivation, and Miami Blues.
This actually ended up being the second time I would interview Sean Bean about the movie as I visited the set of the film during production last year and...

When film historians look back at the last decade in British cinema, the genre (and it seems to be one) of ‘low-budget action-thriller’ is unlikely to be well regarded. Generally a synonym for ‘badly written gangster flick’, the usual formula for such movies is to combine former Eastenders cast members, with lots of swearing, a few guns and less tension than a children’s birthday party.
Of course, there are always exceptions to this, and Cleanskin is certainly one. Tense, intelligent and with well developed characters, it shows just what can be done with a shoestring budget and a talented writer.
Earlier this week we headed down to Mayfair for the film’s premiere, where we spoke to the cast and director about the controversial subject matter, the potential audience reaction and the attraction of smaller budget British features.

Sean Bean brings his brooding charisma to CleanSkin, a drama thriller about terrorist attacks in the UK. Here’s Ryan’s review…
CleanSkin is the name given to a type of terrorist who works alone, without connections to overseas organisations. By a vaguely similar token, CleanSkin the movie is an action thriller drama made by UK independent filmmakers without the big money financing of overseas producers. And regrettably, its low-budget, independent status is frequently apparent.
Sean Bean stars as Ewan, a government agent who specialises in breaking arms and murdering people at close quarters. The death of his wife during an unspecified terrorist attack has left him with an almighty chip on his shoulder, which is something high-ranking, chain-smoking official Charlotte (played by Charlotte Rampling) exploits perfectly when a suitcase full of Semtex is stolen by a group of British terrorists. Ewan is paired with young agent Mark (Tom Burke...

Hot on the heels of the clip that we put up last week, Digital Spy have just released the first five minutes if Sean Bean’s new movie, Cleanskin which hits cinemas next Friday 9th March. It seems to be becoming the norm for studios to release large chunks of a movie to reel you into you local multiplex to see more of the movie that you’re hopefully enjoying in small segments. It will of course be a shame if the first five minutes are the best bit. Take Meet Joe Black for example!
Anyway, Cleanskin also stars Charlotte Rampling, Abhin Galeya, Peter Polycarpou and Tuppence Middleton. and is directed by Hadi Hajaig.

Beware terrorists! In Hadi Hajaig's upcoming action thriller, Sean Bean is what you call a Cleanskin and according to Wikpedia, its a term commonly used in the UK to describe an undercover operative whose identity is not known to the forces he is tasked to infiltrate. In another words, expect to see Bean to violently beat, stab and shoot his way out of a terrorist bombing attack. I wouldn't want to be on his hunting list.Sophisticated British action thriller Cleanskin explodes onto cinema screens in March with an exciting cast lead by Sean Bean, who plays Ewan, a Secret Service Agent working undercover in the criminal underbelly of London. A few years back director Hadi Hajaig was all over the pages of Twitch thanks to his film Puritan, a supernatural thriller starring Lock Stock's Nick Moran. It was little seen for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with quality but suffice it to say that I kind of love this film and have been anxiously awaiting whatever Hajaig would do next. And here it is.Sean Bean, Charlotte Rampling and Michelle Ryan star in Cleanskin, an action-thriller featuring Bean as an anti-terrorism agent. Details are being kept scarce for now with the official synopsis a fairly Spartan affair:Ewan is a secret service agent faced with the task of pursuing and eliminating a suicide bomber and his terrorist cell. But details or no, I know...

As the mighty Sean Bean films his next movie, Cleanskin, we caught up with him to talk about some of his finest roles...
Just before Christmas, we were kindly offered the chance to come and see an action scene being filmed on the set of forthcoming independent Brit thriller, Cleanskin, which also afforded an interview with the film's main star, one Sean Bean.
From what we were told, Cleanskin portrays Sean Bean's character, Ewan, a secret service agent with a personal vendetta, defining his path and a need to stop any form of terrorist activity, while at the same time it aims to portray the other side of terrorism, which shows how the character of Ash (Abhin Galeya) is turned towards terrorism, bucking the trend of taking a one dimensional approach to the subject.
The whole day proved to be a surreal, but fantastic one, as the freak snowstorms...

Sean Bean interview on the set of Cleanskin, Senate House, London –
December 18 2010, the height of the snow, and it’s snowing particularly heavily this morning as I arrive at the location shoot for Cleanskin, the new feature from writer/director/producer Hadi Hajaig. I’ve arranged to meet James the PR guy outside Senate House, London, an enormous art-deco block now part of the University of London. Taking us inside the main hall (also used for the Batman Begins courthouse, and CIA lobby in Spy Game) we watch Hadi direct actor Abhin Galeya as the terrorist protagonist Ash, making his way around an upper balcony, gun in hand. There’s a brief punch-up as numerous extras look on.
Later, as we wait for our 10 minutes with Sean Bean, he shoots a quick scene walking...

As the snow fell over Elephant and Castle in December HeyUGuys ducked out of the cold to catch up with Sean Bean on the set of his latest film Cleanskin. Whilst writer, director and producer Hadi Hajaig and the crew busied themselves against the weather and all odds setting up various impressive stunts and action-packed scenes, Sean told us a bit more about his role and the story behind Cleanskin…

What is Cleanskin all about?
It’s essentially about terrorism and anti-terrorism. I play a character called Ewan Keane who has a lot of experience in that kind of work through MI5 and MI6. He’s a soldier – he’s been over to Iraq and to the Middle East and seen some pretty shocking things in his time. In a sense, his is a personal vendetta despite his professional approach. He’s seen many people die at the hand of...
