It was oddly devastating to learn that ITV’s kid’s channel Citv is to close on 1st September 2023. Many millennials and Gen Xers probably haven’t even seen a Citv show for two decades or more – besides, back in the day it wasn’t even a channel, but just a few after-school hours of programming on the regular ITV channel. So why does its closure leave us feeling like it’s the end of an era?
Because the memories of that era were so, so good, that’s why. We all remember getting home from school, grabbing a glass of squash and a Wagon Wheel and immediately flicking the TV on, and Citv (along with Cbbc – and Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel if you were well posh) kept us company until it was time to eat our spaghetti hoops and turkey twizzlers.
There were zany dramas, comforting puppet characters,...

Neil Cross has opened up about whether he’d ever showrun Doctor Who.
The novelist and TV writer, who created Luther, is a big fan of the BBC sci-fi series, and got to write two episodes back in 2013.
His outings for series seven, titled “The Rings of Akhaten” and “Hide”, came during the Steven Moffatt era, when Matt Smith played the Time Lord, and Jenna-Louise Coleman played his assistant, Clara Oswald.
Russell T Davies, who rebooted the show in 2005, has returned as showrunner of the series – and The Independent asked Cross what he would do if Davies asked Cross to replace him when he decides to step away again.
Cross said he’d “be too scared to take on Doctor Who”.
“At the same time, having never met him, if Russell T Davies asked me round because he needed his house cleaned or he needed someone to cook him breakfast,...

Amy Winehouse’s ex-bassist has said that Marisa Abela’s portrayal of the late singer is “evocative”.
Abela is playing the legendary “Rehab” singer in the forthcoming Back to Black biopic about Winehouse.
Dale Davis, who was Winehouse’s bass player for eight months before her death, has since said how uncanny the actor’s performance is.
“There are certain times when I look at Marisa and I’m reminded of Amy, especially in the make-up and sometimes when she talks,” Davis told Mail Online.
“I’m actually taken back to moments in time,” he said. “It’s quite evocative in that way.”
The bass player, who reportedly spoke to the singer on the phone three hours before her death, recently performed a show in Covent Garden with Winehouse’s band.
Davis’ comments come after Abela’s casting was widely criticised by many fans saying that she doesn’t anything like the singer.

Ellie’s immunity from the Cordyceps infection is finally explained in the closing episode of The Last of Us season one.
Throughout the first season of the HBO video game adaptation, fans have been trying to figure out how Bella Ramsey’s Ellie has been able to carry on living as a functioning human being after being bitten by the Infected.
Ellie’s immunity is like a special power, effectively turning her into precious cargo. It is the reason why she met Pedro Pascal’s Joel in the first place (the gruff antihero was tasked with safely smuggling her across the country so she could be used to find a cure).
While there is no explanation given in the original video game for Ellie’s immunity, the final episode of The Last of Us season one sees screenwriter Craig Mazin concoct a backstory for the character that explains it all.

Richard Madeley has defended Gary Lineker’s criticism of the government’s new asylum policy, saying that calls to sack the Match of the Day host are “preposterous”.
Lineker, 62, has faced criticism from members of the Tory party, after comparing the language used to launch the controversial policy with that of 1930s Germany.
During an appearance on Question Time on Thursday night (9 March), Madeley said: “Clearly, if [Lineker] was a political journalist, political presenter or interviewer in any of the areas of the BBC that we’re talking about, like Newsnight, then clearly he shouldn’t have made those comments.
“Those comments would be a dereliction of duty and deeply compromising to his programme, to himself, future interviews and of course to the BBC, which is publicly funded by us.

Chantelle Walker, who appeared on Gogglebox in 2020 with her mum and sister, has spoken out about being dropped from the show.
The family appeared on a few episodes, but Walker claims they were put on a filming break, before being dropped altogether.
"There was silence for a while and we didn’t know what was going on for months. Then they dropped us, which was a shock,” Walker told The Sun, speaking of her family’s disappearance from the show.
The 26-year-old claims that the North London family were told that there was not enough cameras to film them.
But as things transpired, their contracts were not renewed: “There was no discussion, we couldn’t understand why – but what can you do when they tell you they don’t want to film anymore?"

Paul Mescal surprised his Aftersun co-star Frankie Corio with a personalised message from Olivia Rodrigo.
The actors star together in Charlotte Wells’s coming-of-age drama about a father and daughter on holiday at a Turkish resort.
While filming in May 2021, Mescal arranged for the “good 4 u” singer to wish Corio a happy birthday in a pre-recorded video.
In a short clip shared by Leona Corio, Frankie’s mother, on Thursday (9 March), Mescal is seen holding his phone to his co-star as she watches the message.
“Hi Frankie, it’s Olivia, I heard it’s your birthday,” Rodrigo says, before wishing her the “best day ever”.
“I hope you eat lots of cake and open lots of presents, and I hope I get to meet you real soon,” Rodrigo told Corio, then aged 10 or 11.
“Hope this one's the best year yet.”
After Rodrigo’s video ends, Corio is seen beaming and rendered speechless with surprise.

Apparently, Madonna has a vendetta against Scorpios, at least according to Ryan Murphy.
Years ago, the Glee creator said he was contacted by Lakeshore Entertainment founder Tom Rosenberg, asking him to interview the Queen of Pop about her life for the 2000 film The Next Best Thing.
Madonna starred in the romance drama opposite Rupert Everett.
“I flew to New York and in the elevator ride up to meet Madonna for the very first time with Tom, he turned to me and said, ‘I forgot to ask you, when is your birthday?’” Murphy told Glee co-stars Jenna Ushkowitz and Kevin McHale on a new episode of their And That’s What You Really Missed podcast.

Neil Cross has admitted that a well-loved series character almost returned in the Luther film.
The novelist and TV writer has created a Netflix movie based on the BBC series, titled Luther: The Fallen Sun, in which Luther is pitted against David Robey (Andy Serkis), a tech billionaire with deadly motives.
It’s the first Luther project since the fifth series in 2019, and is low on returning characters: the only other regular to appear is Dsu Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley).
However, in a new interview with The Independent, Cross opened up about the “temptation” he felt to bring back other characters in varying ways, including Ruth Wilson’s Alice Morgan.
“Alice is not in this film, but that's not a kind of an act of exclusion – it's a sin of omission,” he said. “If anything, it's not an attempt to prove anything.

The Woman King director Gina Prince-Bythewood has said that she will “never get over” the film’s “egregious” snub at the Oscars.
Starring Viola Davis as the fictionalised leader of the real-life Agojie tribe, the film follows an elite unit of all-female warriors active in the historical kingdom of Dahomey. Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch and Sheila Atim also star.
The film secured nominations at the Golden Globes, Baftas and SAG Awards, with Davis picking up a Best Actress nomination at all three shows.
However, when the Oscar nominations rolled around, not only was Davis not nominated in the Best Actress category, but the film failed to pick up a single nod.
Speaking to People, Prince-Bythewood said that the snubbing of The Woman King by the Academy reflected a “bigger issue” within the film industry.

Jimmy Fallon has surprised judges by auditioning for the latest episode of The Voice in the US.
The presenter pranked the 23rd series judges, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, Niall Horan, and Chance the Rapper, on Tuesday night’s (7 March) show when he appeared in secret to perform.
Host Carson Daly told viewers he had a “special surprise” for them, before Fallon appeared on the show.
"Right now, we have an artist backstage preparing for the biggest performance of their entire life," he said, teasing the surprise guest.
Fallon then joined the stage to sing 1982’s “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)” by Michael McDonald.
Three out of four of the judges pressed their buzzers to turn around during the performance. Shelton was the only one to resist the temptation to spin his chair until Fallon approached him.

Pat Sharp has said he is “truly sorry” for a vulgar remark he made to a woman while hosting an awards show.
The Fun House presenter, 61, was presenting the Conference News Agency Awards on Friday (3 March), when a comment he made, designed to be a joke, fell flat in the room of approximately 400 people.
Sources in attendance at the ceremony claimed that Sharp handed a woman a T-shirt that had a picture of his face and mulleted hair, from the 1980s, alongside the phrase: “Looking Sharp since 1982.”
When the woman joined Sharp onstage, these sources told Deadline that he made an inappropriate comment about his image being on her chest.
According to Sharp’s rep, he told her: “That’s the only way I’m going to get on your t***.” The rep added that the joke was meant as a double entendre for the phrase “get on your nerves...

RuPaul has spoken out against the passing of an anti-drag bill in Tennessee.

In a video post on the official RuPaul’s Drag Race Twitter on Wenesday (8 March) night, RuPaul shared a message about the importance of voting amid the clamp down on gender expression.
Wearing a pink suit and leopard-print shirt while stood against an American flag, RuPaul began the speech with a quote from Drag Race star Jaida Essence Hall.

Exclusive: Pat Sharp, the British presenter known for his work on Top of the Pops and Fun House, has said he is “truly sorry” after making a lewd remark to a woman while hosting an events industry awards show.
The 61-year-old broadcaster, who shot to fame in the 1980s, was compèring the Conference News Agency Awards last Friday when he made a joke that shocked a room of around 400 people, according to several sources.
The incident has coincided with Greatest Hits Radio announcing today that Sharp is leaving the Bauer Media Group station to “explore other opportunities.” It is understood that Bauer made a decision some time ago not to renew Sharp’s contract, which expires at the end of March. However, having been made aware of the incident, Bauer said Sharp will “not return to the station with immediate effect.”

Charlotte Church has reflected on Chris Moyles offering to take her virginity when she was 16 in comparison to the “more underground” misogyny of 2023.
Church rose to fame as a classical singer as a child, before going on to pursue a career in pop music in the mid Noughties.
In 2002, Moyles, who was then presenting BBC Radio 1’s drive-time show, offered to take the singer’s virginity, saying that he wanted to “lead her through the forest of sexuality now she had reached 16”.
Church, 37, makes an appearance on Kathy Burke: Growing Up, a new documentary for Channel 4 exploring the subject of ageing, in which Church opened up about the public reaction to her changing as she got older.
“It felt like it started to get dark when you were basically reaching puberty, that’s when they started to write about you differently,” Burke says, in a clip obtained by Metro.

Please be advised that in the interests of maintaining contemporaneous consistency I will be referring to WWE as WWF throughout this article. This clarification should prevent you from imagining giant men in spandex fighting pandas for money.
On August the 29th 1992 the WWF came to Wembley Stadium for its annual SummerSlam. It was the first time the organisation had strayed outside the States for an event of this scale, and the reason was purely financial: Vince McMahon and his backers realised that while enthusiasm for the sport was waning – or at least plateauing – in the US, fans in the UK were in the fevered grip of Wrestlemania, Hulkamania, and – perhaps most crucially of all – Gladly-Spend-Thirty-Pounds-on-a-Giant-Foam-Finger-amania. The WWF’s instincts proved correct: the first round of tickets for SummerSlam sold out in five minutes, and the event helped to shift over a million pounds in merchandising. UK fans would do anything...

One of the best kids tv shows of the 90s is hoping to make a return as a live action event in London for adults. Mega-fan Glen Middleham and a group of friends and colleagues are hoping to raise enough money to create an authentic experience including many of the games featured in the show.
With help from the original Fun House creative team and legend Pat Sharp supporting the idea, this certainly has the potential to find success much like the Crystal Maze live experience. Teams of 6 reds vs 6 yellows will play wacky games, race the Fun Karts and tackle the ball pool, planned to last 1 hour 45 mins. Alongside Pat, twins Melanie and Martina will be on board.
The Indiegogo campaign is the only place to get tickets. Early supporters can get a 60% discount with 2000 tickets priced at only £25. Pledges of a minimum of £10 will get your name personally...

It's 40 years since Multi-Coloured Swap Shop made its television debut and kick-started the Saturday morning kids' TV slot...
Imagine the excitement - it's just before 9.30am on Saturday 2nd October 1976. It's almost like Christmas has come early, such is the anticipation. The nation's kids, who hitherto got their kicks at the Saturday morning pictures, settle in front of their television screens and press the button marked 'BBC1'. Those who read their parents' Radio Times know a new show is about to start with Radio 1 Breakfast Show DJ Noel Edmonds at the helm. 28 year old Noel is cool and down with the kids. Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen - the Doctor and Sarah Jane from Doctor Who - are to be the first star guests, and you can actually speak to them live by telephone! The TV set warms up and the familiar blue and yellow BBC...

The Crystal Maze, Cyber Zone, Fort Boyard... We look back at the UK game shows that dared to ask more than just quiz questions...
If the idea of yet another TV game show with an uninspiring presenter and ever so slight spin on the tried and tested Q&A formula fills you with apathy, you're not alone. Although TV quiz shows often rake in the viewers for a relatively low production budget, hence their popularity with TV studios, the whole genre feels a little stagnant. Perhaps it's the rise of the Internet, a general change in viewer culture, and the changing tastes that come with it. While many shows of the past delighted audiences with images of shiny new appliances, cars, and holidays to far-off destinations, today's shows mostly award cold, hard, and boring cash. Great for the winner, but not too interesting for the viewer. Give...

Get Your Own Back was one of the most fun children's game shows of the 1990s. The show - which saw kids covering adults in gunge - returned at this year's Edinburgh Fringe, and is now eyeing a live tour and TV comeback.
Presenter Dave Benson Phillips's career may have been off-screen since his '90s heyday, but he still has fond memories of classic kids' shows and his great friendship with Fun House 'rival' Pat Sharp.
Why are shows like Get Your Own Back and The Crystal Maze still so adored by nostalgic fans?
"A lot of it is because the people of the 1990s were very vocal about the shows they like. We liked the shows then but there were no platforms at the time where you could say to the world, 'I liked that programme, who's with me?'.
"You have in the 1990s, a lot...

When I used to look back on my childhood - in the days before the internet’s all-seeing taint - there were three things that I always assumed were as much a constant of my young life as excessive sugar intake and making up innumerable excuses for having torn my trousers.
The first was Bertha (lovely Bertha), the stop motion-animated kids TV show helmed by Ivor Wood about a sentient factory machine - the titular Bertha - whose exploits helped trick a generation of British children into thinking that factory life was a non-stop cavalcade of japery, typified by super-advanced AI, funny wee robots and, most unrealistically of all, smiling faces. Pat Sharp made an outrageously wacky return to Fun House at the weekend, though sadly it was only for a few lucky punters.
The presenter reunited with twins Melanie and Martina Grant for the one-off event, where four family teams competed in a day full of games, gunge and prizes.
Family pub restaurant Fayre & Square teamed up with children's play centre Wacky Warehouse for the event, with the winning team taking home a family holiday worth £1,000.
Games included a quiz round for the children, which saw the parents of the losing teams being gunged, while a Build a Burger relay game featured the children and parents working together to retrieve an oversized burger from a ball-pit.
Sharp said of the day: "The return of Fun House as a one-off live event was as wacky, fun and outrageous as you could wish for!
"It was a brilliant twist to allow adults...

"Do you feel the power of the Gladiators? Can you face the challenge of the champions? Do you have the courage of the heroes?
"Do you have the will or the skill? Do you have the strength, the speed the heart to be a winner? Deep down in your Soul?"
These were the fundamental questions posed by ITV's original Gladiators, to both the audience and brave contenders who dared to take part. While this particular writer longed to be Lightning (her backflips were to die for), all the seemingly superhuman powerhouses were forces to reckon with - only occasionally tamed by strict referee John Anderson.

Pat Sharp and Lorraine Chase have become the next contestants eliminated from I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!. The Fun House host left the jungle after finishing in the bottom two of the public vote and losing a bushtucker trial to his rival Fatima Whitbread. The pair faced a challenge called 'Fill Your Face - Extreme', which required them to endure having various critters poured into a perspex box on their head. Sharp successfully stared down meal worms, crickets, scorpions and snakes, while Whitbread managed to face soldier crabs, spiders and 7,500 cockroaches. The challenge was halted while medics removed a cockroach that had become lodged in Whitbread's nose. With neither celebrity giving up, hosts Ant & Dec announced that Sharp and Whitbread would compete in a tiebreaker round. The first person to remove three (more)...

Upon hearing the news he will face Fatima, Pat appeared convinced he will be going home. He said: "It's going to take an Olympian [to beat her]. Goodbye!" Sinitta wants her 'I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here!' experience to be like the movie 'Eat, Pray, Love'. She said: "If I fall in love with someone in the jungle, then it'll definitely be with a man worth considering. I'm a single mum and it's going to be nice to be...

I'm a Celebrity's Crissy Rock has accused Pat Sharp of being ageist. The Benidorm actress, 53, took offence to Sharp, 50, who in a rallying cry called on younger contestants to partake in bushtucker trials. "So Crissy and the young girls. So what about the young girls, Crissy? Shall we let them have a go?" Rock responded: "Yes, let them have a go." However, Rock complained privately: "I feel like a t*t because that's the first time I ever heard anybody in this camp go, 'You'd better come back with stars'. That's why I said, 'We don't need that crap'. That is unfair that he made it about our ages that we were incapable of doing (more)...

I'm a Celebrity's Emily Scott won her first bushtucker trial tonight. She became the first contestant this year to achieve a maximum number of stars, after Pat Sharp narrowly missed out on 100% completion in his first task. The 28-year-old model undertook 'Coral Grief' yesterday, which saw her faced with a crocodile while in a giant water-filled tank. Despite tiring as the challenge reached its final stages, Scott captured all 11 stars, winning 11 meals for her campmates. Speaking to hosts Ant & Dec afterwards, she simply gasped: "I couldn't see anything. That was intense." Returning to camp, she told the other celebs: (more)...

"I love you guys," she declared while hugging her co-stars goodbye. Speaking to Ant & Dec after the result, Sinitta claimed that she "knew" she would be voted out tonight, but was happy to have conquered her fears. "I wanted to...face my fears and not be afraid of everything," she said. "I was starting to really love it. Every day [I was] waking up feeling better and better, sleeping (more)...

Sinitta has become the second person to be voted off 'I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!'. The 80s pop star - who was a latecomer onto the show alongside Pat Sharpe - received the fewest numbers of public votes, meaning she had to leave the Australian camp this evening (25.11.11). Speaking to hosts Ant and Dec when she left camp, she admitted she was pleased not to be the first voted out, following Stephanie Powers' exit yesterday (24.11.11). She said: "It's amazing.
