Studio Lambert has introduced the world to Gogglebox, Race Across the World and The Circle but the indie has faced its greatest test in Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge, and the road has been a bit of a bumpy one.
Stephen Lambert’s 15-year-old British production house, which its founder says is having its busiest year following a strategic shift to “go big” on premium unscripted, took on its grandest undertaking when Netflix gave it the weighty reins to the Squid Game competition series.
Alongside fellow UK indie The Garden, Studio Lambert has subsequently overseen a competition with 456 contestants – about 20 times that of the average reality show – with the largest prize fund in history.

With the cost-of-living crisis severely impacting both people working in the film and TV industry and those who might be looking to join, the British Academy has set out a number of initiatives aimed at improving social mobility and tackling class inequality in the screen industries.
Announced Monday, the initiative has seen £277,000 ($336,000) awarded to 77 individuals, an expansion of BAFTA’s bursaries and scholarships scheme, with grants ranging from funding toward specialist equipment and driving lessons to training courses, offering support that might otherwise lock aspiring creatives out of the industry or act as a barrier to progression.
In addition, BAFTA is producing a resource — due out later this year — to assist hirers such as broadcast commissioners, independent producers, film studio and games developer leads, to become what it describes as “more class aware” in their practices. The online resource will include interviews with creatives and practitioners — including names such as Danny Brocklehurst,...

With viewing figures for awards shows largely in decline and less than half of what they were at their peak, the importance of such ceremonies has been called into question in recent years.
Perhaps understandably, the heads of the two organizations who put on the biggest award shows in the film world have put up a solid defense about the value of the ceremonies and the awards themselves.

“Theatres and streamers need to coexist,” Bill Kramer, CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts, concluded during a keynote this morning in London when quizzed on his opinions about the future of cinema.
“For our Academy,” he continued, “the theatrical experience is extremely important. We just built two new theaters in Los Angeles. We enhanced our theatrical eligibility requirements, but we also acknowledge that streaming provides access across countries and regions, and that’s a positive.”
He added: “We are going to be constantly assessing how theatrical and streaming connect as we move forward. But I don’t think one will dominate the other for us.”

“A lot of very impressive people have led this festival and what connects them is a love for movies and culture and what that can achieve,” Kristy Matheson told Deadline of her new job as Director of the British Film Institute’s London Film Festival.

Matheson has her first go at navigating that legacy next week as the London Film Festival (Lff) opens with the International Premiere of Emerald Fennell’s sophomore feature Saltburn, starring Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, and Rosamund Pike.
Running October 4-15, Lff will feature 29 World Premieres, seven International Premieres, and 30 European Premieres. After 18 years at BAFTA, Krishnendu Majumdar is having trouble switching off.
It’s been almost two months since the media executive, who recently won a BAFTA for producing the Kate Winslet-led Channel 4 drama “I Am Ruth,” finished his three-year term as chair of the British Academy, handing over the reins to agency boss Sara Putt. But it took a minute, he says, to stop going on high alert every time he clocked a buzzy topic that BAFTA might be asked to comment on.
“You see something online and you think, ‘Oh I wonder how we should respond?’” says Majumdar, known to most in the industry as simply ‘Krish.’ “And then it’s like, ‘No, no. I don’t do that’ … I’m just a member. I’m not on any committees. I’m not a trustee. I don’t speak on their behalf anymore.”
