Say, you know what would have made the Tommy Lee Jones disaster movie Volcano better? Lava zombies and cult icon Danny Trejo, if Rene Perez’s undead disaster movie is anything to go by. When a simmering volcano blows its top in small-town America, the locals have more to worry about than simple immolation – the emergence of a horde of long-buried zombies from within adding considerably to their woes.
A small band of survivors hustle together to escape both the perils of the lava and the zombies, hunkering down in a woodland cabin, where the crinkly old resident within is undergoing some serious social media withdrawal symptoms.

*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Left Films.
Director/writer: Rene Perez.
Cowboys and Zombies is being released in the United Kingdom August 1st on DVD. The film's title may or may not be a way to capitalize on the looming success of Cowboys and Aliens, which releases near the same date. In North America, this title is called the more unique, but less fun The Dead and the Damned and the film will release in this territory July 26th on DVD. This is an independent film from director Rene Perez, who also directed the upcoming War Machine. Set in the 19th Century, a meteorite crashes the party in a small western town. Zombies takeover, while a bounty hunter searches for a wild apache "indian" (Cowboys) to earn a plentiful bounty. Overall, this is a strangely enjoyable time from a gifted first time director.
David A. Lockhart plays a troubled Mortimer.

Cowboys Vs Zombies
Stars: David Lockhart, Camille Montgomery, Rick Mora, Robert Amstler | Written and Directed by Rene Perez
For a film called Cowboys & Zombies, the film features a relatively small amount of cowboys and indeed zombies. It opens on the hero of the day, Mortimer, as he rounds up his latest hit as a bounty hunter. It starts quite promisingly, surprisingly, it’s a decent enough shoot-out, if you overlook the terrible sound effects, acting, and blood splatters.
Mortimer then goes to the man who hands out the bounties, he wants to do one last job, that job is to bring in a Native American who has so far evaded capture. On Mortimer goes to bring in this Native American, just after he has an incredibly bewildering interlude with his horse, about two minutes goes by where he just strokes it and ponders life.
Meanwhile, some gold-miners have uncovered a...

There is something about westerns and horror flicks that when blended have an effective impact. Dead Bones by Olivier Beguin is one of the better western horror shorts and now the Another Hole in the Head Film Festival will show Rene Perez's latest The Dead and the Damned with a world premiere July 17th. In this film, a meteor is unearthed by some 19th Century miners and instead of holding precious minerals the meteor contains a deadly virus (Bloody). Soon, the local town folk are lumbering zombies and a bounty hunter must set things right with cold steel. Watch the trailer for this independent film from Mattia Borrani and iDiC Entertainment production inside; then, envision a rugged frontier made deadlier with the roaming dead.
