"You have no idea who she is!" Universal Pictures has debuted the second trailer for the film Redeeming Love, a passionate romance story from filmmaker D.J. Caruso and adapted from Francine Rivers' novel of the same name. Redeeming Love is a powerful retelling of the biblical book of Hosea against the backdrop of the California Gold Rush of 1850. Abigail Cowen and Tom Lewis co-star as Angel and Michael, the two young lovers are the center of this story of love against all odds, as they connect despite their differences. Opening in early 2022 in theaters. "Redeeming Love shows there is no brokenness that love can't heal." The ensemble cast also includes Famke Janssen, Logan Marshall-Green, Nina Dobrev, Livi Birch, Eric Dane, Brandon Auret, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell, and Josh Taylor. This looks like a passionate story of true love, but the religious aspects seem overwhelming. Enough to turn me away from wanting to watch this.

"Nobody's been topside in 8 years!" Vertical Entertainment has debuted a trailer for Broken Darkness, a post-apocalyptic survival thriller that originally premiered back in 2017. Years later and it's finally getting an official release. Broken Darkness follows the exciting story of Sam, a broken man who after the world ends from a massive meteor shower and the death of his son, is forced to survive underground. He ends up on the run with a crew of rag tag yet heavily armed rangers. Hunted down by mutated creatures, bandits and cannibals alike, their undeniable defiance to return to home is challenged, and an honest story emerges to reveal the heart of friendship in the face of death. A "tale of selflessness, friendship and courage." The film stars Sean Cameron Michael, Brandon Auret, Suraya Santos, and Brendan Murray. Looks like so many other post-apoc survival films, with mutant people and more. Doesn't look like there's anything new?...

For Rogue, co-writer/director Mj Bassett is taking audiences into some beautifully remote areas in Africa where a group of mercenaries, led by Megan Fox, must try and free a group of hostages from a dangerous group of warlords. This mission doesn’t go exactly as planned, and after the team finds themselves stranded in an abandoned lion farm, they must try and survive against the dangerous group of criminals hot on their trails as well as a lioness who has her own agenda.
Earlier this week, Daily Dead had the pleasure of speaking with Bassett about her latest film project, and she discussed how the idea for the film was born out of her own passion for wildlife. Bassett also talked about the challenges she faced during the film’s ambitious shoot in South Africa, her experiences collaborating with Megan Fox and more.

Lionsgate has dropped a new trailer for action-thriller ‘Rogue’ starring Megan Fox fighting off some rather suspect CGI lions.
Megan Fox (Transformers) tackles a thrilling new role as a battle-hardened mercenary in this explosive action saga. As team leader O’Hara, she leads a lively squad of soldiers on a daring mission: rescue hostages from their captors in remote Africa. But as the mission goes awry and the team is stranded, O’Hara’s squad must face a bloody, brutal encounter with a gang of rebels—and the horde of ravenous, enraged lions they encounter.
Directed By M.J. Bassett, the film stars Megan Fox, Philip Winchester, Jessica Sutton, Calli Taylor, Brandon Auret, Adam Deacon, and Sisanda Henna. Also in trailers – It’s time to expose the Mafia in new trailer for ‘The Traitor’ The film is released On Demand and Digital August 28th and Blue-Ray and DVD September 1st.

"Some lions go rogue... She likes to kill." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for an action movie titled Rogue, the latest from director M.J. Bassett. Megan Fox stars in this "explosive action saga" as a battle-hardened mercenary. As team leader O'Hara, she leads a lively squad of soldiers on a daring mission: rescue a hostage from captors in a remote region of Africa. But when the mission goes awry and the team is stranded, O'Hara's squad must face a bloody, brutal encounter with a gang of rebels — and the horde of ravenous, enraged lions they encounter at a seemingly abandoned farm. Can they survive attacks from rebels and lions? This also stars Philip Winchester, Calli Taylor, Jessica Sutton, Lee-Anne Liebenberg, Brandon Auret, Adam Deacon, and Sisanda Henna. This looks especially bland and bad. As hard as she tries, Megan Fox just can't act - even opposite the CGI lions.

In the not-so-distant future, the U.S, government has developed the “American Peace Initiative,” commonly known as A.P.I. It’s essentially a piercing signal that, when deployed, prohibits a person’s thoughts regarding the practice of criminal behaviors — unleashing “the cop within,” according to its slogan. Announcers and electronic billboards count down the number of days until free will becomes a thing of the past. Until then, however, lawlessness rules the street, in the form of violence, looting [cue Gif of man pulling shirt collar away from neck and making Garrggh face], and topless ladies dancing on the roofs of cars.

Director Gilles de Maistre had good intentions at heart bringing an animal activist message to the mainstream with “Mia and the White Lion.” The craft and care it took to capture a portrait of a headstrong young girl and her unconventional friendship with a white lion is astounding, considering the filming spanned a few years so the actress could authentically bond with the animal. This sweetly sentimental feature — aimed squarely at the family demographic, particularly those with small children — will assuredly connect with animal lovers, with one big caveat: There’s a whiplash-inducing reveal that could prove traumatic to some of those same folks.
Ten-year-old Mia Owen (Daniah De Villiers) has recently moved from London to South Africa and is struggling with lots of complicated feelings. Her frustration and angst over this sudden lifestyle change has prevented her from fitting in at her new school, as she gets in fights with classmates and teachers alike.

A new official Us trailer has debuted for the charming adventure Mia and the White Lion, which was first released last year in France under the title Mia et le lion blanc - since it's made by a French filmmaker, though the dialogue is mostly in English. Daniah De Villiers stars as Mia, with a full cast including Mélanie Laurent, Langley Kirkwood, Ryan Mac Lennan, Lionel Newton, Lillian Dube, and Brandon Auret. *full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by one of the members of the cast. Director/writer: Christopher-Lee dos Santos Cast: Sean Cameron Michael, Suraya Santos, Brandon Auret, Jonathan Pienaar and Ryan Kruger. Broken Darkness is a post-apocalyptic title, from South Africa. Previously titled Last Broken Darkness, this film was shot by director Christopher-Lee dos Santos. Broken Darkness stars: Sean Cameron Michael ("Black Sails"), Brandon Auret (Elysium), Suraya Santos and Jonathan Pienaar. Much of the film takes place after a devastating meteorite strike; survivors must live below ground, or face the radiation and infection above. For the first hour, everything story-wise comes across well. Then, the tone shifts from a serious dramatic thriller to an overly sombre series of scenes. This shift, in tone, is a bit disconcerting. Also, somewhat reminiscent of Jeff Renfroe's The Colony (2013) and John Hillcoat's The Road (2009), Broken Darkness brings the.

Every year of movies seems to have a dominant theme. Half way through the year, it seems the focus is on artificial intelligence. It's well documented on the site of our fervent love for Alex Garland's Ex Machina that so eloquently dealt with the matter of A.I. and humanity's coexistence (read Brad's interview with Alex here). Heck, even Marvel touched on the subject with Avengers: Age of Ultron. Those are most fresh in our mind, but on June 16, Neill Blomkamp's Chappie will hit shelves on Blu-ray and DVD to remind moviegoers it was the first film to kick off the year of A.I. Of course, of the three, Chappie garnered less than stellar reviews (check out Brad's theatrical review). But just like the titular android, it's a flawed yet misunderstood piece worthy of reinspection. Part of the negative reception likely has to do with...

As reviews for Neill Blomkamp's "Chappie" made clear, not everyone is a fan of South African rappers Die Antwoord. The presence of Ninja and Yo-Landi Visser were a make or break component for many, and even for some of the people working on the actual movie. According to actor Brandon Auret, who plays the gangster big bad Hippo, Ninja had caused "tension" on the set, and reports from South African press last year suggested the rapper was causing no shortage of problems, even claiming he was written out of scenes (though upon seeing the final film, and how much of a central role he plays, it doesn't seem like that was the case at all). But now, Ninja has responded. In a piece over at Boing Boing, Ninja addressed the rumors in his own unique fashion, and offers his own portrait of what he saw on set, particularly when...

iRobot: Blomkamp’s Latest Sentimentally Inclined Sci-Fi is Pleasantly Familiar
Sentient technological constructs and expanding the definition of what constitutes the essence of consciousness as it applies to the essence of humanity is at the core of Neill Blomkamp’s latest feature, Chappie, so named for the eponymous, experimentally self-aware robot at the heart of his narrative. It is almost impossible to discuss the film without acknowledging many of its derivative elements, namely the film’s striking similarity to RoboCop (either version) and the family friendly sentiments of Short Circuit, and because of this, the film’s larger ideas feel too familiar, which undercuts Blomkamp’s ability to truly reach the poignant potential of the material.
There are a handful of emotionally rewarding sequences, but Blomkamp’s attentions are saturated by the film’s innovative protagonist to such a degree that most of the supporting players are reduced to archetypes,...

Chappie is a nugget of an idea, a poorly developed "RoboCop meets Short Circuit" at best, with a story and characters so dumbed down it's almost amazing they were able to piece it together and call it a movie. It's supremely lacking in motivation or reason to exist, logic of any kind, and featuring a cast of characters I hesitate to even call "one note". To give these characters credit for anything beyond their ability to fill space on a screen would be to compare the Berlin Philharmonic to a two-year-old banging on a Playskool xylophone, and it's about as irritating as the latter for the bulk of its two hour duration. There is nothing redeeming about any one of the human characters and yet I can't tell if writer/director Neill Blomkamp (co-writing with Terri Tatchell) expects us to feel anything for any of them. I'm sure, on some level,...

It sort of flew over my head at the time, but last year, there were rumblings that there was trouble on the set of Neill Blomkamp's "Chappie." While the casting of South African hip hop duo Die Antwoord seemed like an inspired choice, Ninja was apparently earning the enmity of the cast of crew, reportedly criticizing acting choices, and in the words of one crew member, acting like "pure evil." Blomkamp was so fed up, he reportedly wound up reducing Ninja's role in the movie. And one actor who became a particular focus of Ninja's attitude was Brandon Auret, and he's spoken out recently — sort of — about his dealings with the rapper. In an interview with South Africa's News 24 (via The Movies), Auret — who initially says he has "no comment" on working with Ninja — admits that the rapper was unprofessional and a total pain to work with, and his behavior "became an issue.

We got our first look at the titular robot in Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie back in July, when the first images arrived around the time of Comic-Con. The marketing campaign then fell silent, but they have now added a second poster, with an even better look at the ‘bot. The director rolled cameras in Johannesburg at the end of last year, with a cast that includes Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, Ninja, Yolandi Visser, Jose Pablo Cantillo and Brandon Auret, who is voicing the main character (performance captured by Copley). The metallic dude it’s named for is shaping up to be among the sweetest recent robots in cinema history (though Disney’s Baymax from next year’s Big Hero 6 could give him a squishy run for his money).Chappie, penned by Blomkamp and his old District 9 co-writer Terri Tatchell, sees the title character kidnapped...

'District 9' and 'Elysium' director Neill Blomkamp's latest robo-based venture into the realm of science fiction is being promoted at this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con. 'Chappie' is the story of an A.I. robot stolen by a couple of criminals intent of using him to help carry out their unlawful ways. Up to now we've had to imagine what dear old 'Chappie' looked like. I've had something between the robot from 'Robot and Frank' and Marvin the paranoid android from 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' in my mind but this new teaser and banner spotted at Comic-Con reveals something quite different and dare I say it very Blomkamp-esque. The movie stars Hugh Jackman ('Prisoners'), Dev Patel ('Slumdog Millionaire'), Ninja and Yolandi Visser of rap-rave band Die Antwoord, Jose Pablo Cantillo, Brandon Auret and the voice of Sharlto Copley ('District 9')....

For Neill Blomkamp’s next slice of sci-fi freshness, Chappie, he’s tapping into a more comic vein that was evident in either District 9 and Elysium. Both of those have wit and laughs, but at the end of the day there’s only so much levity to be mined from the sight of Matt Damon being drilled into an exosuit. The film has a new poster timed with Comic-Con and it’s a bit of a doozy. The director rolled cameras in Johannesburg at the end of last year, with a cast that includes Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, Ninja, Yolandi Visser, Jose Pablo Cantillo and Brandon Auret, who is voicing the main character. The metallic dude it’s named for is shaping up to be the cutest ‘droid since Marvin, albeit in a grungy, lo-fi way.Chappie, penned by Blomkamp and his old District 9 co-writer Terri Tatchell,...

The world was impressed with District 9 – Neil Blomkamp’s feature-length directorial debut. His follow-up film, Elysium, was not as impressive. One of the common denominators in those two movies is Sharlto Copley – an actor who began his career in a Blomkamp short film (Alive in Joburg), and will continue it in Blomkamp’s next film as writer-director, Chappie.
Co-written with fellow District 9 scribe, Terri Tatchell, the sci-fi film is based on another Blomkamp short – Tetra Vaal – and features Yolandi Visser, Jose Pablo Cantillo, Brandon Auret and Ninja among its supporting cast. Chappie is a robot, stolen by two local criminals who plan to use his artificial intelligence capabilities for their own questionable purposes. So far, so gripping – but it is the methods employed by Blomkamp for this film that has got Sharlto Copley talking to Coming Soon. Fresh from the Market at Cannes, we can share with you the first poster for Thomas Daley's thriller Tiger House. Front and center you will notice the film's heroine Kaya Scodelario hefting a pretty mean crossbow. Below her are her adversaries. Left to right should be Brandon Auret, Dougray Scott, Ed Skrein and Langley Kirkwood. Everyone looks ready to rumble. Scodelario is Kelly, a young gymnast who has snuck into her boyfriend's family home only to become embroiled in a 'tiger kidnapping' when a group of bank robbers abduct the father of the house to use him to break into the cash depository that he manages. With one of the robbers gravely injured and Kelly the only unknown element in an otherwise meticulously planned heist, it's...

Sigourney Weaver has joined the cast of “District 9″ and “Elysium” director Neill Blomkamp’s latest, the sci-fi drama-as-social-allegory “Chappie”. Well, I don’t know for sure if “Chappie” will feature the director’s usual blend of groovy sci-fi action and social allegory, but let’s face it, it probably will. Weaver joins Blomkamp Bff Sharlto Copley and Hugh Jackman in the film, the plot for which goes something like this: After being kidnapped by two criminals during birth, Chappie becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family. Chappie is preternaturally gifted, one of a kind, a prodigy. He also happens to be a robot. If you thought raising a kid was hard, try raising a robot baby! Amirite, parents? “Chappie’s” cast also includes Dev Patel, Ninja, Yolandi Visser, Jose Pablo Cantillo and Brandon Auret. Yes, there’s someone named “Ninja” in this movie. No, really. Production...

Sci-fi icon Sigourney Weaver can add one more film to her seemingly neverending genre roster as Sony Pictures and Media Rights Capital have announced the start of production on Chappie, the new film from District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp. Sharlto Copley has already been announced as the voice of the title robot, and Dev Patel has a lead role in the film along with a small role for Hugh Jackman. Now the press release announcing the start of production has revealed Weaver has a role in the film about a robot who is kidnapped by two criminals at his conception, and becomes the adopted son in their strange family. The film is based on the Blomkamp's short film Terta Vaal, which acts as an advertisement for a force of robots used to help police and develop slum nations around the world. ★★☆☆☆ In the late 1980s, maverick filmmaker Andrew Worsdale gained immediate cult status when his debut feature, the ultra-provocative Shot Down (1988), was banned by the apartheid government in South Africa. Having maintained radio silence for the best part of two decades, the director returned to screens to great acclaim, with his new film, Durban Poison (2013) plays as part of the London Film Festival's 'Thrill' strand. A Bonnie and Clyde-inflected tale of high passion and dangerous criminality, Worsdale's latest sadly fails to really cover any new ground and presents its tired tale within a confused narrative structure.
The film's plot is loosely based on the exploits of real-life murderous lovers Charmaine Phillips and Pieter Grundlingh, who embarked on a drug-fuelled killing spree in South African in the early eighties. Reimagined as Joline (first time actress Cara Roberts) and Piet (Brandon Auret) the couple begin the film in custody with their wrongdoings...

Matt Damon ‘Elysium’ movie box office: weekend leader? Directed by the widely acclaimed District 9‘s Neill Blomkamp, the R-rated futuristic sociopolitical thriller Elysium, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, should have no trouble landing in the top spot at the North American box office this weekend. According to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo, on Friday, August 9, 2013, Elysium took in $11.2 million from 3,284 locations, including $1.6 million from Thursday night / midnight shows. (Photo: Matt Damon in Elysium.) Up until Friday night, some pundits believed that Disney’s animated feature Planes might be a threat to Elysium, as it’s a "family movie" — i.e., adults must accompany little children to theaters, which means extra ticket sales especially on the weekend proper. And as a box-office plus, Planes is in 3D, which means surcharges. But after Planes‘ definitely earthbound box-office performance on Friday — an estimated $8.1 million — it became clear that the weekend would belong to Elysium.

‘Elysium’ 2013 movie: The domestic weekend box office leader? (Photo: bald, tattooed, shirtless Matt Damon in ‘Elysium’) So far, there are only guesstimates out there regarding this weekend’s domestic box office. Directed by District 9‘s Neill Blomkamp, the R-rated futuristic sociopolitical thriller Elysium, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, is expected to collect around $30-$35 million from 3,284 locations by Sunday evening, after grossing an estimated $1.6 million from Thursday night screenings. Anything below $30 million will be quite disappointing, considering that the Tri-Star / Sony Pictures-distributed Elysium cost a reported $115 million. For comparison’s sake, M. Night Shyamalan / Will Smith’s $130 million-budgeted After Earth, another futuristic thriller distributed by Sony, debuted with a highly disappointing $27.52 million in late May / early June. After Earth cumed with a ridiculously low $60.27 million in North America — but has been rescued by the international market, where big-budget actioners usually fare remarkably well: $184.21 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

‘Elysium’: Contemporary parallels and class warfare (photo: Jodie Foster as Delacourt in ‘Elysium’) (See previous post: “Elysium: Movie Review Pt.1.”) Neill Blomkamp, who also wrote Elysium, pushes the contemporary parallels right to the edge of being ham-fisted. The station’s shoot-to-kill defensive systems are under the command of Delacourt (Jodie Foster), who refers to the Spanish-fluent refugees attempting to breach Elysium as “immigrants.” The poor clamoring for access to the medpods installed in every Elysium home essentially constitute the rich being asked to pay for everyone else’s health care. And that’s not an unreasonable idea given conditions on terra firma so inadequate that after Max gets beaten up by the cops on his way to work, he’s evaluated by a comically indifferent, robot caregiver. By the time Max enters Elysium with his gun-toting cohorts, class warfare doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. As with District 9,...
