The film, set up at Sk Global, is about Cheung Yin "Kelly" Sun and her unlikely partnership with poker player Phil Ivey. Awkwafina is attached to star in a new film telling the true story of the most successful female gambler in history, a project with the working title of “The Baccarat Machine” from Sk Global, Skg’s co-CEOs John Penotti and Charlie Corwin announced Wednesday.
Awkwafina will play gambler Cheung Yin “Kelly” Sun and follow her unlikely partnership with legendary poker player Phil Ivey to beat some of the country’s major casinos at their own game.
“The Baccarat Machine” is inspired by Michael Kaplan’s article of the same name as published in Cigar Aficionado. It tells the true story of Kelly Sun, a young Chinese woman who turns a painstakingly developed talent and obsession for payback into beating the system at their own game. With major casinos conspiring to bar her from their properties, Sun partners with the international “King of Poker” Phil Ivey in order to take down the system through subterfuge,...

USA, 2013
In Billy Wilder’s excellent 1951 drama Ace in the Hole, which is a classic showcase of media manipulation, ambitious city-slicker reporter Chuck Tatum (played by an enthusiastic Kirk Douglas) finds himself stuck in Albuquerque, New Mexico with hopes to find that one big story that will jettison him to the big-leagues again. Tatum lucks out when he is informed about a man trapped in a cave-in and uses this opportunity to break big. When Tatum’s photographer asks why this will make a big story, Tatum responds that it’s a “human interest” subject and that if you can get readers to sympathize with the narrative then you have the reader’s attention. But, he also elaborates that a human interest story has to focus on one person; if you focus on others involved with the story,...

Amanda Seyfried, arguably best known for her wide-eyed performances in films such as Mean Girls andMama Mia!, is perhaps not who you might expect to be cast as Linda Lovelace in a serious and confrontational film about spousal abuse. Defying expectations, however, is usually a good thing.
Lovelace is a different film to what you might expect based on its poster campaign, which seems to suggest a frothy, saucy take on the subject matter and you might be forgiven for viewing the film in this way for its first half. It's sometimes said that in the smiling face of every Hollywood star something awful can be glimpsed if you look hard enough. Something in the glaze of the eyes, or the set of the teeth – the suppressed memory of that entry fee paid at the beginning of a movie career: the casting-couch humiliation or nauseating debasement long ago, when the star was a powerless youth. ★★☆☆☆ In 1972, Gerard Damiano's cult porno Deep Throat launched the short-lived but infamous career of Linda Lovelace, as well as pushing 'adult entertainment' into the American public consciousness after the film went on to become a box office smash. Now, Amanda Seyfried takes on the role of the doe-eyed girl next door turned scandalous sex symbol in Lovelace (2013). We open as the sweet and innocent 21-year-old Linda meets the seemingly charming Chuck Traynor (a moustachioed Peter Sarsgaard) at a local skate rink. Fast-forward a couple of months and the pair are happily married, but extremely short on cash.
Sadly, Lovelace's mutton-chopped husband soon shows his dark side when he convinces her to become a porn star. Another example of Hollywood trying to develop two similar projects at the same time, Lovelace beats rival biopic Inferno to the big screen. A document of the rise to fame of fledgling porn star Linda Lovelace and the abuse suffered by her at the hands of husband Chuck Traynor, Lovelace is a fairly stock biopic illuminated by its case and a somewhat surface level increase in interest due to its narrative structure.

New York, August 19: Andy Bellin, who has helmed the upcoming biopic 'Lovelace' based on famous porn star Linda Lovelace, has revealed that he was made fun of in school because of his mother's nude pictures.

Andy said that his classmates would torment him with comments like, 'Hey, I just saw your mom naked'.

When Deep Throat was released in 1971, no one thought it would become industry's first mainstream triple X. The story was about Linda, a woman born with an only-in-porn medical condition. Her doctor quickly suggests what she can do with that special talent. Ah, the '70s: as silly as skin flicks ever were. Linda Lovelace became a star, going on talk shows, even debuting her own product line. To many, she was seen as a feminist icon, but her real life was much more complicated. Bullied by a tyrannical husband into an industry that never really cared for women, Linda struggled for years to escape the institution that made her famous. The new biopic Lovelace has a pretty by-the-numbers script by Andy Bellin....

Chicago – It was one of the strangest star-is-born stories in show business history. One porn film – “Deep Throat” – permeates the American consciousness at precisely the right time. The “lead” actress in the film becomes a household name – and then becomes a victim of it – in ‘Lovelace.’
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The film is the story of Linda Boreman, Aka Linda Lovelace, during a crucial ten years of her existence. “Deep Throat” was released in 1972, and “Lovelace” chronicles the before and after effect of that film on Linda Boreman. This is brutal stuff, for the world of pornography isn’t exactly sunshine and rainbows. The new crowned Linda Lovelace is manipulated by her husband Chuck Traynor, and forced into a celebrity that involves an exaggerated skill set (as all pornography portrays), virtually no pay (despite the film making several hundred million dollars) and a husband willing to sell her into essential prostitution. Amanda Seyfried...

I don't suppose any biopic of 1970s porn star Linda Lovelace could be definitive--there were too many facets to her life, before and after she achieved worldwide notoriety for her "performance" in Deep Throat—but Lovelace makes a good stab. Amanda Seyfried delivers a fearless and sympathetic portrayal of the young woman who is led into very dark places by a smooth-talking hustler named Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard). Her unusual prowess at fellatio becomes her stepping stone to fame, propelling Deep Throat to unprecedented success at a time when pornographic films were still screened in movie theaters and the Internet was not yet on the horizon. Screenwriter Andy Bellin...

I do not understand why this movie was made.
I can fully comprehend the impulse to produce a biopic about Linda Lovelace, as she is an undeniably fascinating subject, but at no point during Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s Lovelace did I have any grasp whatsoever on any meaningful reason for why this specific film exists. It is utterly and absolutely empty, devoid of any thoughtful or insightful angle on the story it tells and entirely uninterested in any of the deeper social, ethical, political, and, of course, sexual implications therein. Concerned instead with telling its story in the most manipulative, exploitative way possible, Lovelace is one of the fluffiest, least substantive biopics I have ever seen. The film does not merely have an identity crisis – it has no identity to speak of, whatsoever, and nothing to offer viewers drawn in by the inherently interesting nature of the subject.

"Lovelace," the new film biography of the woman who starred in the most famous porn film of all time, "Deep Throat," struggles to find novelty in a story that plays as depressingly familiar.
It's the "pretty young thing corrupted by a monstrous control freak" tale that follows Linda Boreman from not-quite-innocent girl to porn star Linda Lovelace, her troubled life afterward and late life redemption.
Her real life was messier than even that suggests. But this brief, sketchy movie about that "anything goes era" can never decide if it wants to be history, amusing satire, or tragic cautionary tale.
Amanda Seyfried makes it worth watching, seriously sexing up her image with a fearless turn as a naive beauty with self-esteem issues who gained fame but not fortune for making a dirty movie that all of America -- it seemed -- took in.

Following last week's first trailer for the Sundance selected drama Lovelace, a trailer from across the pond has also surfaced with a bunch of new footage. Amanda Seyfried leads the film as infamous porn star Linda Lovelace, who rose to fame due to Deep Throat, largely considered the most well-known and successful pornographic film of all-time. But her life that seemed destined for fame and glamor came crashing down as her relationship with Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard) turned abusive and began her turn against the industry. Seyfried looks to give a great performance, but we're not sure about the film yet. Here's the UK trailer for Rob Epstein & Jeffrey Friedman's Lovelace from Lionsgate UK: Rob Epstein & Jeffrey Friedman (Howl) direct Lovelace written by Andy Bellin. Based on Eric Danville’s biography The Complete Linda Lovelace, the film follows Linda Boreman’s (Amanda Seyfried) rise to fame as iconic porn...

Actress Amanda Seyfried rose to prominence in two vastly different supporting roles, that of Karen Smith in Mean Girls and Lilly Kane in Veronica Mars. Her increasing profile has led to bigger roles, from the tv show Big Love to movies such as Red Riding Hood, Les Miserables, and Chloe. As per the Internet Movie Database, Reems had already appeared in several small stag films prior to Deep Throat. He had also been featured in a tiny role in the Jane Fonda / Donald Sutherland crime thriller Klute, released in 1971 and coincidentally directed by All the President's Men's Alan J. Pakula. He later claimed that he almost landed the part of the coach in John Travolta / Olivia Newton-John's 1978 musical Grease, but the film's powers-that-be eventually reached the conclusion that his association with porn would have been detrimental to the Paramount release. (Pictured above: Adam Brody plays Reems in Lovelace, with Amanda Seyfried as Linda Lovelace seen on her knees.) Harry Reems kept on working in the X-rated movie industry throughout the '80s. Also according to the Internet Movie Database, his last movie credit was Steve Scott's Too Good to Be True, with Ginger Lynn and Peter North,...

The Sundance Film Festival has released their movie premiere line-up for 2013, and there's a lot of films on the list that I'm really interested in seeing. A few of the most notable movies include Before Midnight, jOBS, and Chan wook-Park's Stoker, which is the movie I'm most excited about seeing at the festival.
I'm excited about this year's festival, it looks like we're going to have a ton of movies to see, so we'll be extremely busy. I hope to hell I can find the time to see all the movies I want to see while I'm there. It's always a challenge, but it's a challenge I love to face.
Look over the movie premiere line-up below and let us know if there are any films you're looking forward to seeing!

With the exception of a pair of Fox Searchlight titles (The East and Stoker), Warner Bros.’ Before Midnight and 6 hour mini-series from Jane Campion (Top of the Lake) the 2013 Sundance Film Festival Premieres program is chock-full of acquisition friendly titles. Fourteen in all, the selection includes several returning filmmakers in Drake Doremus, David Gordon Green, Rob Epstein & Jeffrey Friedman and Michael Winterbottom and Joseph Gordon-Levitt — all filmmakers that I accurately predicted would return with product and when we find cast names/star wattage we usually find quality – not surprisingly, four Blacklist listed projects The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman (’07), A.C.O.D. (’08), Stoker (’10), The Way, Way Back (’10) (joining the previously announced Toy’s House and Spectacular Now) are among the announcements. And final note: the chances of bumping into either actors Dermont Mulroney or James Franco at a Park City party have now increased: Franco who brings his experimental directed film Interior. Sundance Film Festival 2013 is becoming more and more promising seemingly with each passing day.
Last week, we heard the brilliant first line-up, which included the likes of Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Kill Your Darlings, The Spectacular Now, Touchy Feely, and Crystal Fairy.
Then came the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, and New Frontier line-ups, which included Sightseers’ Us premiere, S-vhs, and We Are What We Are.
And tonight the festival has announced its line-ups in the Premieres and Documentary Premieres category, and they are somewhat amazing.
Topping the list is Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s feature directorial debut, Don Jon’s Addiction, which is all but guaranteed to be one of the best films of next year.
Also heading to Utah will be Zal Batmanglij’s The East, starring Ellen Page, Brit Marling, Alexander Skarsgård, and Toby Kebbell, seeing the director re-team with Marling once more following the success of Sound of My Voice.

Millennium Films have released a brand new magazine-style poster for Lovelace.
Directed by filmmaking duo Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (Howl), Lovelace details the trials and tribulations of real-life porn star Linda Lovelace: a woman lead to suicide by the coercive industry and her abusive husband.
The film, which sports a screenplay from relative newcomer Andy Bellin (Trust), stars Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, Wes Bentley, James Franco, Hank Azaria, Adam Brody, Chris Noth, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chloë Sevigny, Sharon Stone and Juno Temple.
With the other Linda Lovelace biopic, titled Inferno, failing to gain traction, Lovelace has all the necessary ingredients to present an accurate and controversial insight into the inner workings of the ever-shady porn industry and one of their most known stars.
Lovelace will be released in U.K. cinemas later this year.
