Genre regulars Alexandre Aja and Franck Khalfoun have worked together many times over the years. Khalfoun had acting roles in Aja’s movies High Tension and Piranha 3D, worked in the script department on Aja’s The Hills Have Eyes remake, and was an executive producer on his film Oxygen. Aja wrote and produced Khalfoun’s directorial efforts P2 and Maniac. And now they’ve teamed up again for the thriller Night of the Hunted, which is set to start streaming on both the Shudder and AMC+ services as of October 20th. We’ve gotten our hands on a trailer for Night of the Hunted, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Like several of the previous Aja and Khalfoun projects, Night of the Hunted is a remake. In this case, the source material is the 2015 Spanish film La Noche del Ratón.

Bill the Media: It’s been a long time coming but the UK government finally unveiled its draft Media Bill to revamp public broadcasting for the digital age Wednesday, which should come into law later this year barring any more swift changes of government (you never know). Wild Bunch International, the sales company behind “Titane” and “Happening” (pictured), has renamed itself as Goodfellas.
In a brief press release, the company said “there are no other changes to the structure created in 2019.” Wild Bunch International was launched in 2019 as a standalone sales company by French film industry veterans Vincent Maraval and Brahim Chioua. The pair had previously co-founded Wild Bunch, which is now owned by German entrepreneur Lars Windhorst and ran by former NBCUniversal vice chairman Ron Meyer and former beIN Media Group executive Sophie Jordan.
Wild Bunch International was created shortly after Wild Bunch completed its restructuring plan. Under their three-year deal, Wild Bunch had a minority stake in the new banner and allowed it to use the Wild Bunch brand. The three-year pact ended in November and the two companies no longer have corporate ties. But Goodfellas said it will continue working with Wild Bunch on...

Argentine helmer Gaspar Noé’s latest feature “Vortex” world premiered in Cannes, where it was greeted with a standing ovation and critical acclaim. Variety spoke to the director at the Unifrance Rendez-vous in Paris this week about the film.
“Vortex,” lensed during the 2020 lockdown, follows an elderly couple in a Paris apartment. Shot entirely in split-screen, it marks a new departure for Noé, with a more meditative realistic ambience, combined with a transcendental undercurrent.
The elderly man is a retired film critic, played by Italian filmmaker Dario Argento (“Suspiria”), who is trying to finish a book about cinema and dreams, while looking after his wife, played by Françoise Lebrun (“The Mother and the Whore”), who is suffering from advanced dementia.
The more subdued, somber tone was influenced by the death of several of Noé’s close friends and family, his own near-fatal cerebral hemorrhage and the fact that both his...

STXfilms has closed a deal to premiere its upcoming movie “My Son,” a thriller starring James McAvoy and Claire Foy, on both Peacock and The Roku Channel.

James McAvoy in his latest film "My Son" was given no script, no specific dialogue and was only aware of basic plot details for his character. The remaining cast and crew was fully aware of everything that was about to happen to him, and in the first trailer for "My Son," you can see him improvising and reacting in real time to the action as the story unfolds.
"My Son" is directed by Christian Carion and is a remake of Carion's own French film from 2017. That film too was a similar improvisational experiment, in which the film's lead was also kept in the dark about the plot until it all happened. In McAvoy's case, that means we get to see him "have an experience that no actor gets to have," as he says in an introduction for the trailer.

Netflix’s Oxygen (Oxygène), a French-language thriller set inside a tiny cryogenic pod, went through a handful of iterations before landing as an eerily timely take on confinement. The film, based on Christie LeBlanc’s 2016 Black List script, was originally slated to be shot in English and with Anne Hathaway attached to star. It was later transformed into a project led by Noomi Rapace with Franck Khalfoun directing and Alexandre Aja producing. Ultimately, the pandemic scuppered plans for that version and Aja took over helming duties with Mélanie Laurent in the role of Liz, a doctor who wakes up amid a labyrinth of wires and tubes in an extremely confined space and with no idea where she is, or why. The contained race for survival film, part of Netflix’s push to local-language productions, was shot last summer — just after the first Covid lockdown lifted in France — and releases globally today.

French sales powerhouse Wild Bunch International (Wbi) has announced a series of in-house promotions on the first day of the AFM.
The promotions are part of an ongoing reorganisation that started last year when the sales entity restructured to become an independent standalone company with strong links to the Wild Bunch Group, rather than acting as its in-house international sales division.
“While continuing its collaboration with Wild Bunch, Wild Bunch International continues its reorganisation and transformation aimed at dealing with the major changes in our profession,” the company said in a statement.

STXfilms has closed the rights for an English-language remake of the hit French thriller My Son, with James McAvoy and Claire Foy set to star. The film will be directed by Christian Carion, who also directed the French film. The pic is eyeing a November start in Scotland.
STX has locked distribution rights for North America, the UK, Italy, Benelux, Latin America, Spain, Australia and China.
In My Son, when a man’s (McAvoy) only son goes missing, he travels to the town where his ex-wife (Foy) lives in search of answers. To play a man whose life is clouded by mystery, McAvoy will not be given a script or dialogue, as was the case in the French film. The character will only be aware of basic aspects of his story, and will have to improvise and react to each moment as it unfolds. The rest of the cast and...

James McAvoy and Claire Foy will star in a thriller about a father’s missing child called “My Son” for STXfilms that’s an English-language remake of the 2017 French film of the same name, the studio announced Monday.

Alexandre Aja has been confirmed to direct the slightly confusingly-titled O2 for Netflix. The survival thriller, which is presumably not linked to the mobile phone network of the same name, will be shot in the French language, and is currently expected to arrive on Netflix in mid-2021. Production has now started for the feature, a positive sign given the recent Covid-19 delays to the entertainment industry.
O2 will star Mélanie Laurent, best known for turns in Inglourious Basterds and 6 Underground, as well as the repeatedly-delayed Tenet, as a woman who wakes up in a medical cryo unit without her memory. The character then has to piece together her memories in order to escape the chamber before her oxygen runs out. Aja was originally set only to produce, with Franck Khalfoun of Maniac directing, but he’s now taken over directorial responsibilities as well.
Furthermore, Laurent’s role was reportedly first linked to Noomi Rapace,...

Netflix has begun production on O2, a French survival thriller to be directed by Alexandre Aja and starring Melanie Laurent. Getaway Films’ Vincent Maraval, Brahim Chioua and Noëmie Devide are producing the Black List script by Christie LeBlanc. The film will be released on Netflix in mid-2021. Mathieu Amalric and Malik Zidi have also joined the cast.
This is a project that previously had Noomi Rapace attached to star for director Franck Khalfoun and with Aja producing (Wild Bunch International kicked off sales at the Efm). Prior to that, Anne Hathaway was in the mix. The most recent switch-up marks Aja’s return behind the camera on a French-language project after such U.S.-based films as Crawl, The Hills Have Eyes and Piranha 3D. Aja will also produce alongside longtime associate Gregory Levasseur.

Wild Bunch Ag, the pan-European film and TV group co-founded by Vincent Grimond, Brahim Chioua and Vincent Maraval, has secured a €35 million ($40 million) credit line from Germany’s Commerzbank.
The company told Variety that the new credit line will be used by the banner to continue ramping up its production activities, increase its investment in TV series and support its digital distribution business. The credit will mature in October 2022.
While the outfit is no longer directly involved in international sales of movies, Wild Bunch is still handling distribution in France, Italy, Spain, Germany and Austria. Its next few releases planned in France include “Beasts Clawing At Straws,” a feature debut by South Korean helmer Kim Young-hoon on July 8, and Keith Thomas’s “The Vigil,” a horror film produced by Blumhouse on Aug.5.
“This loan is the result of the excellent cooperation with the film specialists of the Commerzbank media team.

Deal includes €54.6m financial debt reduction and €30m credit line.
After months of speculation, Wild Bunch and its majority stakeholder Sapinda have announced a financial restructuring plan which reduces the pan-European sales and distribution company’s debts and sets it on a new course towards growth after nearly a decade of retrenchment.

“The situation is now much clearer,” Grimond told Screen.
