Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.
Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

The nominees for the Oscar for best original song could make for a star-studded category, as several of the leading contenders — representing films like Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Sony’s Devotion, Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick and Pixar’s Turning Red, among others — were written and performed by some of our leading pop stars.
From new songs from Oscar winners Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish and Finneas to the long-awaited new track from Rihanna, these original compositions will aim to land on the category’s short list (which is announced Dec. 21) before making it to the home stretch when the nominations are announced next January.
Rihanna – “Lift Me Up”
The singer (and fashion mogul) returned from a years-long hiatus from music with this ballad for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, co-written with the film’s composer, Ludwig Göransson, writer-director Ryan Coogler and Nigerian singer Tems.

Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” is now streaming on HBO Max, complete with a star-studded cast, glittery and glamorous sets and a flamboyant soundtrack to match. Austin Butler, who stars as the King of Rock and Roll, sang quite a few Elvis songs himself (mixed with the vocals of The King himself).
But as is customary with a Baz Luhrmann film, the songs in “Elvis” aren’t exactly straightforward. The soundtrack features a number of contemporary artists incorporating various Elvis songs into new work, such as like Swae Lee and Dilpo sampling “That’s All Right” for their new song “Tupelo Shuffle” and CeeLo Green and Eminem using the opening of “Jailhouse Rock” in their “The King and I.” Kacey Musgraves lays her velvety voice over “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and Stevie Nicks and Chris Isaak sing “Cotton Candy Land.” Still other artists like Doja Cat came up with songs like “Vegas,...

Naomi Judd’s daughter Ashley calls for changes to laws around bereaved families after mother’s death
Ashley Judd has said that having her mother Naomi’s suicide play out in public caused her “trauma” and “horror”.
The country musician died of suicide in April aged 76, one day before she was due to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The Judd family later filed a court petition asking that police reports and recordings made during the investigation into her death be sealed, as releasing them would cause “significant trauma and irreparable harm”.
However, knowing that the information would be made public, Ashley said that her mother had died by suicide and urged people to reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (800-273-8255). She said that her family had agreed she should discuss her mother’s death to help raise awareness of the cause, and the availability of help.

The first official trailer of the forthcoming slasher film Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey has been released, turning the usual animated cuddly bear into a murderous hunter.
It was first announced in May – to mixed fan reactions – that the beloved childhood character would receive a sinister makeover from director Rhys Waterfield.
In the newest trailer, Christopher Robin (Nikolai Leon) can be seen returning to the 100 Acre Woods to reunite with his “friends” Pooh, Piglet, and Eeyore.
However, after having “been abandoned” they “ have turned wild” and are now on the prowl.
Scenes cut between an eerie message written in blood on a cabin window warning a group of girls to “get out”, Pooh hitting a girl in the head with a sledgehammer, and blood streaming down another girl’s face.
“We used to be friends, why are you doing this?” Christopher Robin asks. “I would have never left I swear.

Priscilla Presley revealed that watching the scenes between Elvis and manager Colonel Parker in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic were the hardest to watch and “brought back a lot of memories.”
“He didn’t take Elvis where he wanted to be, and that was hard because I lived it,” she said in an interview with the “Today” show on Tuesday. “So living that, with him, and watching the movie, it brought back a lot of memories.”
Presley also said that her former husband’s longtime manger “should have stayed a publicist,” recalling the arguments between the two in which Elvis explained his desire to be involved in “serious” projects.

No discussion of Baz Luhrmann’s films – and his maximalist, hyper-sensory style – is complete without mentioning their equally more-is-more approach to music. With the help of his longtime music supervisor Anton Monsted (who started out as his assistant on 1996’s “Romeo + Juliet”), the Australian director has become synonymous with era-defying, genre-compounding pop soundtracks that infuse his films’ historical settings with contemporary sensibilities.
That trademark first emerged in the 90’s-grunge soundtrack of “Romeo + Juliet” and eventually evolved into the mash-up mania of this year’s “Elvis.” Like “The Great Gatsby” and “Moulin Rouge!” before it, the box office hit blends the King’s classic tunes with reimagined and original songs by some of today’s biggest artists.
In honor of Luhrmann’s latest, TheWrap presents a ranking of his films by soundtrack. (Note: “Australia” and “Strictly Ballroom” do not have long enough soundtracks to merit inclusion.)

Renowned music producer Dave Cobb was working on a film job where he recreated the music of one singing icon — Tammy Faye Bakker — when he got the assignment to do the same for an even more significant vocalist, high a bar as that may have been: Elvis Presley. Truly, both figured into his youth, growing up as a Pentecostal kid in the Southeast. But even if one were to consider these singers on the same plane, “Elvis” would require quite a lot more out of him than “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” as workloads go, due to the sheer amount of Presley catalog being recreated. Ultimately, he wound up working on 80 different tracks for the Baz Luhrmann film.
He admits he was intimidated by the task, although probably not as much as a producer whose parents hadn’t constantly played Elvis records from the time of his birth might have been.

Baz Luhrmann’s box-office-topping new movie Elvis does manage to show the powerhouse singer Big Mama Thornton (played by Shonka Dukureh) performing “Hound Dog,” a song she recorded in 1952, four years before Elvis Presley. But it leaves out two very significant players: songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who wrote “Hound Dog” as teenagers for Thornton, and went on to write “Jailhouse Rock,” “You’re So Square (I Don’t Care),” “Trouble,” and other hits for Presley himself.

On June 22, Kacey Musgraves released a heartbreaking cover of "Can't Help Falling in Love" from Baz Luhrmann's forthcoming "Elvis" biopic. The song was released with a music video featuring clips from the film itself, showing what appears to be an emotional breakup scene between Austin Butler's Elvis and Olivia DeJonge's Priscilla Presley. Needless to say, it makes for tearjerking viewing.
"Can't Help Falling in Love" is the latest release from the "Elvis" soundtrack. On June 16, Måneskin shared a rendition of "If I Can Dream" and Eminem shared a version of "The King and I" featuring CeeLo Green. On June 10, RCA Records released a recording of Austin Butler singing "Trouble." On June 3, Diplo and Swae Lee released "Tupelo Shuffle," which features Gary Clark Jr. and Austin Butler. Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” is far from being just about Elvis, when it comes to the music in the film and on a forthcoming soundtrack album. Besides the vintage Presley cuts included, the movie is providing the opportunity for the most high-profile multi-artist soundtrack in years. The lineup of participating artists was announced in May — without any song titles attached — and a handful of singles has been released, by Eminem, Måneskin and Doja Cat. But not until the film began screening more widely, in advance of its June 17 wide release, did it become fully apparent who was singing what and just how some of the more unusual choices would fit into the biopic.

Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” jams into theaters June 24. The film’s hype just keeps growing, especially after receiving a 12-minute standing ovation after its premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.
With a runtime of 2 hours and 39 minutes, the biopic has received mixed reviews that range from “trainwreck” to “a sharp edit away from being a classic.” According to Time Magazine’s Stephanie Zacharek, “Luhrmann sees equal value in fact and myth.” The Los Angeles Times’ Justin Chang wrote, “It’s all a bit much, which means it’s just right.”
Audiences will have a chance to find out for themselves later this month, but for now here’s everything we know about “Elvis.”

Kacey Musgraves has recorded a version of the 1961 Elvis Presley classic “Can’t Help Falling in Love” for the upcoming soundtrack to director Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” biopic, the singer has revealed.
The country-pop star noted that she had covered the song Monday while walking the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute benefit gala. Musgraves was there with Luhrmann, Priscilla Presley and members of the film’s cast.
Details on the soundtrack have been hard to come by before now, with little publicly revealed beyond the fact that the first single from the album, Doja Cat’s “Vegas,” which includes an interpolation of the Presley hit “Hound Dog.” will be out this Friday. Doja Cat premiered a partial version of the song live at her two April Coachella appearances.

Doja Cat’s single from Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” soundtrack, “Vegas,” has been given a release date — May 6 — after the singer-rapper debuted a live version of the tune at the Coachella festival over the last two weekends.
The single precedes a full film companion album that has loosely been scheduled for summer by RCA, it was also announced Monday. That label news is not exactly unexpected, since RCA has been Elvis Presley’s label home since the late 1950s.
Although “Vegas” is an original song, live snippets reveal the Doja Cat track does incorporate a Presley classic, “Hound Dog.”
Luhrmann was out at Coachella for its second weekend, supporting three artists associated with “Elvis” as a film or soundtrack — including Yola, who plays Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the movie, and Shonka Dukureh, who portrays Big Mama Thornton, as well as Doja Cat.
The exact nature of the soundtrack is not yet being revealed by RCA,...

Warner Bros’ Elvis movie from Baz Luhrmann is going a bit later, with the studio Monday pushing it from June 3, 2022 to June 24, 2022. The pic will be a pure theatrical release, not hybrid day-and-date with HBO Max, as Warner Bros pivots from its pandemic 2021 distribution plan.
Elvis’ departure from the first weekend of June leaves the frame up for grabs for another major studio’s tentpole. On its new date, Elvis squares off with Sony’s Reese Witherspoon production Where the Crawdads Sing.
The news comes following Paramount’s move of Hasbro’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts from June 24, 2022 to June 9, 2023.
Luhrmann directs, co-wrote and produces Elvis. Screenplay was co-written with Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce and Jeremy Doner off a story by Luhrmann and Doner.
