The PBS strand will air the show from Mad Men’s Victor Levin next year following a deal struck with distributor Fremantle. Lisa Honig and Lorenzo De Maio helped strike the deal.
Alice & Jack stars Riseborough and Gleeson as the titular characters in what distributor Fremantle described as a “love story for the ages.” Logline adds: “When they first meet they’re bound by a connection so powerful it seems nothing can break it, but will their path lead them to a place of happiness and togetherness? Or will life and their own emotional complexities get in the way.”

The director of The Arbor and The Selfish Giant returns to her favourite city for her new film. She talks about celebrating lives on the margins and how an ice-rink kiss changed her life
Would you like coffee?” Clio Barnard asks. “Is goat’s milk Ok?” Ooh, that sounds exciting, I say. “There’s oat milk, too.” Barnard is scouring the fridge. “We’ve even got regular cow milk.” It’s early morning when I arrive at her house. Though, as she explains repeatedly, it’s not her house – she’s just renting it while working in London and Essex. It reminds me of Ali & Ava, her lovely new film. Every time Ali tells his friends that Ava is a teacher, she corrects him with “teaching assistant”. Details are important to Barnard.

Clio Barnard took inspiration from two people she met while filming previous films for Ali & Ava, which premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.
“I knew I wanted it to be a love story,” Bernard said to Anna Smith at Deadline’s Contender’s Event: London. She also described the idea behind the film as a “bio-fiction.”
Joining Bernard on the stage were the film’s stars Adeel Akhtar and Claire Rushbrook.
“It all felt very organic and very easy and slow moving,” said Akhtar, “to the point where when we were on set, and I was actually being Ali, I think it was the most free I’ve ever felt.”
“It’s clear from reading the script that it was a very tender, warm, and funny love story” said Rushbrook. “Just being free with no preconceptions… I don’t feel like I came with much prepared, just a keenness to being open.

Celebrated British filmmaker Clio Barnard, a previous Cannes winner for “The Selfish Giant” (2013), is back on the Croisette with Directors’ Fortnight selection “Ali & Ava.”

Collaborating with Bradford-based writer Kamal Kaan as script consultant, Barnard started to shape a story influenced by Hassan, Kaan and Rio.
In the film, both lonely for different reasons, Ali and Ava meet through their shared affection for six-year-old Sofia, the child of Ali’s Slovakian tenants, whom Ava teaches. In the first trailer for “Dream Horse,” Toni Collette plays an ordinary Welsh woman with aspirations for something greater. So she gathers her community to contribute the money to buy a racing horse and watches her dreams become a reality.
Euros Lyn’s film is based on the true story of Jan Vokes, who successfully bred a champion race horse named Dream Alliance against all odds in coordination with the people in her small town. Vokes convinced her neighbors to contribute 10 quid a week for two years until they could afford it, and their investment paid off big time.
The film premiered at Sundance to acclaim and a few tears of joy, including from Collette herself.
“I’m so proud of you. It seems like anything is possible,” she says to the horse after raising it from a foal.

Ammonite, the period romance pic starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan from God’s Own Country filmmaker Francis Lee, received the highest individual production award from the British Film Institue’s Film Fund this year.
The pic from The King’s Speech outfit See-Saw Films was awarded $1.74m (£1.3m) in production finance. It tells the story of Mary Anning, an infamous fossil hunter who develops an intense relationship with a young woman after being sent to convalesce by the sea, and was shot on location in West Dorset in spring this year.
The pic was absent from the Sundance list, where Lee’s God’s Own Country debuted to acclaim, likely because it wasn’t ready in time, though it’s expected to pop up at a significant festival this year. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, Lionsgate and Transmission have all boarded distribution in key markets.

Clio Barnard, whose film has been described as 'hauntingly perfect', says Brits should be 'very proud' of their native industry
There may be no British film in the main competition for the Palme D'Or this year, but that has not stopped a Yorkshirewoman from becoming the toast of Cannes. Clio Barnard's film The Selfish Giant has already been described as "hauntingly perfect" and "jaggedly moving" by critics as it premieres in the Director's Fortnight section of the film festival, with the director herself hailed as a significant new voice in British cinema.
And, despite gloominess about the complete absence of a UK presence from the main Cannes competition lineup, Britons should embrace their native film industry, according to Barnard. "We should be very proud of, in the same way that we should be proud of the NHS," she said.
While "the rest of the world responds to it", she said,...

The 2011 Orange British Academy Film Awards were handed out today and to very little surprise The King's Speech led the way with seven BAFTA Awards as it was also the most nominated film among all nominees with 14 total nominations.
Among its achievements it took home Best Picture, Outstanding British Film, Best Actor for Colin Firth, Best Original screenplay for David Seidler and Best Score for Alexandre Desplat. Where the surprises came were in the supporting wins for both Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter showing The Fighter apparently doesn't pack as much of a punch across the pond as it does here.
Also, for those of you trying to predict the Oscars and are wondering which direction to go with Best Director, David Fincher took home the award for The Social Network, one of three wins on the night for the film. Aaron Sorkin also won for Adapted Screenplay and Film Editing.

Two things the British apparently love: stammering English monarchs and crazy-eyed New York ballerinas.
Tom Hooper's historical drama "The King's Speech," starring Colin Firth as speech-impeded King George VI, and Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan," featuring a crazy-eyed Natalie Portman as a dancer on the verge of a "Swan Lake"-induced breakdown, topped the Orange British Academy Film Awards nominations, which the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced today. "The King's Speech" led the way with 14 nominations, "Black Swan" scored 12, "Inception" snagged nine, and "True Grit" and "127 Hours" nabbed eight apiece. Golden Globes Best Picture winner and Oscar front runner "The Social Network" earned a more modest six nominations.

After the sham [1] of (and ridiculous hand-wringing response to) [2] the Golden Globes, there's nothing like a slightly more legitimate awards ceremony to cleanse the palate. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the nominees for the 2011 Orange British Academy Film Awards this morning. Hit the jump for the full list of nominees and some brief thoughts. There's nothing too controversial on the list, although there are a few surprises. It's great to see some less-praised roles get some loving here, including Noomi Rapace in Girl with Dragon Tattoo, and Pete Postlethwaite in The Town. Jeff Bridges landed a nomination for best actor in True Grit, foreshadowing what may be an Oscar nomination in the same category a few weeks from now. The "Outstanding Debut By a British writer, director, or producer" is full of awesomeness from the likes of Gareth Edwards, Chris Morris [3], and Banksy (although how is...

London -- Tom Hooper's "The King's Speech" is in pole position to be crowned the big winner at this year's Orange British Academy Film Awards, presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. There is nothing stuttering in the nomination race for the Colin Firth starrer about King George VI with the movie securing 14 slots on the potential kudos count sheet.Hooper secures a best director nomination and the picture a best film tilt. Speech will compete with the David Fincher-directed Facebook drama "The Social Network," balletic thriller "Black Swan," from Darren Aronofsky, Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic "Inception" and the Coen brothers' western remake "True Grit" for the best film nod.In the best director category, Danny Boyle could secure his second BAFTA director nod after Slumdog for his efforts with his adventurous biopic dramatization "127 Hours" if he fends off challenges from Hooper, Aronofsky, Nolan and Fincher.

This morning, Bafta announced its nominations for its 2011 awards, with Tom Hooper's period drama The King's Speech (2010) leading the way with 14 nominations including "Best Film" and "Best Actor" for Colin Firth's turn as the stammering King George VI.
Darren Aronofsky's highly anticipated psychological ballet thriller Black Swan (2010) - released in UK cinemas this Friday (review here) follows closely behind with 12 nods. As expected, Danny Boyle's 127 Hours (2010), Christopher Nolan's Inception (2010), David Fincher's The Social Network (2009) and the Cohen brothers' visceral western True Grit (2010) all feature highly.
Special mention should go to British director Clio Barnard, nominated in the "Outstanding British Debut" category for her superb hybrid doc The Arbor (2010), and also the late Pete Postlethwaite, who will compete with Christian Bale, Andrew Garfield, Mark Ruffallo and Geoffrey Rush for the "Best Supporting Actor" award for his role in last year's The Town (2010).

Tonight the 2011 Orange British Academy Film Award nominees were announced and to no surprise The King's Speech led the way with 14 nominations in all the expected categories including Best Film alongside fellow nominees Black Swan, Inception, The Social Network and True Grit.
Oscar front-runner The Social Network scored six nominations, but was still behind Black Swan with 12 noms, Christopher Nolan's Inception with nine, the Coen brothers' True Grit scored eight and Danny Boyle's 127 Hours received seven nominations.
Looking over the list really quickly I notice that not only was The Social Network not among the leading nominees it was also snubbed for Best Original Music, Cinematography and Sound. Elsewhere, Winter's Bone star Jennifer Lawrence wasn't nominated for Lead Actress as Noomi Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) was nominated instead. Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole) wasn't nominated either, but neither was Sally Hawkins for Made in Dagenham.
