Update, with full video Frequent CNN contributor and Democrat Van Jones might have thought he was entering friendly territory by visiting ABC’s The View today, given his across-the-aisle collaboration with conservative cohost Meghan McCain on the new documentary The Reunited States. But cohosts Sunny Hostin and Ana Navarro had other views.
“People in the Black community don’t trust you anymore,” Hostin flatly told Jones, who is Black. Hostin said Jones was perceived as being a “political opportunist” and “chameleon” who “provided racial coverage” for former President Donald Trump.

The Philippine Drug War is a real thing and it takes centre stage in this movie right from the very beginning. We see actual clips of President Rodrigo Duterte declare the war on drugs, a move maybe surprisingly, that had the backing of a high percentage of the population in the Philippines, and this is where Watch List injects itself.
We meet a family right in the centre of things when a husband is killed on the streets. The widowed mother of three then has to make some very tough decisions if she wants to find out the truth about her husband’s death, make sure it doesn’t happen to other people and support her children.
This is not an easy film to watch. The story is clearly...

Long a destination for spiritual seekers from all over the world, India presents a diversity of religions and a potentially enlightening set of ancient traditions to the uninitiated. More than a few have lost their way in this unfamiliar terrain, though, offering filmmaker Ben Rekhi a ready template for his account of Americans abroad overwhelmed by mystical experiences.
Rekhi, a former entertainment executive, scored points with genre fans with his 2005 debut, Waterborne, but markedly changes themes for The Ashram. Often dominated by a familiar form of Asian-influenced religious eclecticism, Rekhi’s feature plays out as a low-key spiritual thriller that should...

Quite a different entry in the 16th Iffla program, since “The Ashram” features mostly non-Indian actors and deals with the supernatural, at least more than it does with reality.
Following the trail of his missing ex-girlfriend, Jamie discovers a remote monastery in the mountains founded by a guru with allegedly miraculous powers. As Jamie tries to pry secrets from the guru’s devoted acolytes, which include the friendly Nitin and Gayatri, and the strict and mysterious Chandra, he also meets the guru and learns of a power that is hidden within him. At the same time, the secrets lurking in the monastery prove more dangerous than Jamie ever imagined.
Let us start from the obvious. Despite the basic premise that involves a guru and the fact that it takes place in a remote area in the Himalayas, “The Ashram” is actually a Hollywood film and not an Indian one, in cast,...

For many years I was the head of film programming for the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles, a non-profit film group that currently runs the Egyptian and Aero Theatres. As part of my job I tried to keep my finger to the pulse of national cinemas from around the globe, both new and old, by combing through festival catalogues, talking to other programmers and watching as many movies as I could get my hands on (much of these in the old VHS days!)
In the 1990s and early 2000s I saw the rediscovery of some amazing bodies of world cinema such as Italian Horror and Giallo Cinema from the 1960s & 1970s by directors like Mario Bava and Dario Argento, and Japanese Outlaw Cinema from the same period by hard-hitting genre filmmakers like Kinji Fukasaku, Seijun Suzuki and Kihachi Okamoto.
