The Haunting of Bly Manor creator Mike Flanagan made it official on Twitter this morning that iZombie actor Rahul Kohli is joining the Netflix/Paramount TV/Amblin/Intrepid Pictures follow-up horror anthology series to The Haunting of Hill House.
In addition, Catherine Parker, who starred in Hill House as Poppy Hill, is coming to Bly Manor.
Flanagan also announced that T’Nia Miller and Amelia Eve are joining, as well as Amelie Smith as Flora and Benjamin Ainsworth as Miles, the latter two being kids’ roles. Kohli, in a series regular role, is reportedly playing a small town guy with a worldly mindset, who has returned to the country to take care of his ailing mother.

“Haunting of Hill House” alum Catherine Parker has joined “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” series creator Mike Flanagan said Friday.
Parker — who played the ghost Poppy Hill on “Hill House” — joins a cast that includes fellow Season 1 alums Henry Thomas, Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Kate Siegel (the latter two castings exclusively reported by TheWrap), who are all returning for Season 2 of the Netflix horror anthology series.
Character details for Parker’s role on “Bly Manor” — which is set to launch in 2020 — are being kept under wraps for now.
Almost a decade ago, I first worked with Catherine Parker on a tiny movie called Absentia. Last season, she was unforgettable as Poppy Hill… today, I’m thrilled to announce that she’s joining us at Bly Manor.

Netflix renewed The Haunting of Hill House for Season 2, set to showcase a new story, titled The Haunting of Bly Manor.
While Netflix does not release viewership information regarding their original content, it's not hard to imagine that its October 2018-premiered original horror series, The Haunting of Hill House, was a massive success, based on fan reaction alone. However, we no longer need to imagine, since the streaming giant has confirmed that a second season is on the way, with Season 2 set to manifest as The Haunting of Bly Manor.
Since the anthological structure of the Hill House series was already known at the outset (and Season 1's definitive conclusion), it should come as no surprise that the second season, The Haunting of Bly Manor, will showcase the exploits of new characters in a new story. Indeed, the name-drop of Bly Manor reveals the story as Henry James’s 1898 novella,...

In 2014, Studio Ghibli temporarily halted film production following co-founder Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement, but that hasn’t stopped the studio from staying active in other ways, such as earlier this year when they co-produced Michaël Dudok de Wit’s “The Red Turtle.” Now, Variety reports that Amazon Studios has just picked up the American rights for another Studio Ghibli production: “Ronia the Robber’s Daughter,” a kids TV series directed by Gorō Miyazaki. The American dub of the series will benarrated by actress Gillian Anderson, best known for her role as Agent Dana Scully on “The X-Files.”

As When Marnie Was There emerges on disc, we look at Ghibli's final films and what they mean for the future of animation...
If there’s one abiding message behind Studio Ghibli’s animated output, it’s that nothing is permanent. Happiness is delicate; summers pass; memories fade. But the brilliance of the Japanese animation house’s movies is that they find joy in the fleeting, not just melancholy. The encounter between two children and adorably rotund woodland spirits in My Neighbour Totoro is all the more special because it’s presented very definitely as a one-off: a chance meeting that can never happen again.
Studio Ghibli was founded in 1984 following the success of Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind, Hayao Miyazaki’s masterful, dazzlingly detailed sci-fi fantasy. From that point on, Miyazaki was established as the sharpest prong on Ghibli’s creative trident, the others...

Many fans see an English-translation of a foreign film as sacrilege. But Studio Ghibli has an impressive habit of garnering Hollywood A-Listers to dub over their spectacular animations. Up On Poppy Hill is no different, with Gillian Anderson, Aubrey Plaza, Christina Hendricks, Ron Howard and many more lending their dulcet tones to the tale of a high school girl on a mission to dissuade a businessman from tearing her school down. Our exclusive clip from the DVD/Blu-ray extras showcases Jamie Lee Curtis bringing her best mum-ming to her...

Studio Ghibli may be best known for its woodland spirits and castles in the sky, but there's so much more to the Japanese animation house's output than colourful fantasy. Whether directed by founders Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, or newer animators, such as Hiromasa Yonebayashi (Arrietty), Studio Ghibli's movies are equally alive in their more dramatic, quiet moments.
From Up On Poppy Hill, released in Japan in 2011 and out now on home release in the UK, may surprise some viewers with its gentle period romance, but it provides a fresh example of how Studio Ghibli can breathe life into even the most prosaic activities. Chicago – As “The Wind Rises” plays film festivals this month and plans for a stateside release (we truly hope) by the end of the year, it has been announced that the Studio Ghibli film will be the last directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki. One of the most important creative voices in the history of cinema is closing the book on his career, although his influence will be felt for decades to come, especially as his son, who directed the recently-released on Blu-ray and DVD, “From Up on Poppy Hill” carries on his legacy.
The romantic soap opera story of “Poppy,” co-written by Hayao from a comic book, feels a little slight but Goro certainly understands his father’s emphasis on the visual, crafting a strikingly beautiful film that truly looks great in HD. It won’t be anyone’s favorite Ghibli film but it casts an enjoyable spell for...

A new movie from Studio Ghibli is always something worth seeking out on a big screen, and Goro Miyazaki's delightful From Up On Poppy Hill, out in UK cinemas this Friday, is no exception. A romantic drama set in 1960s Japan, it may lack the fantastical elements more commonly associated with the studio, but it's nevertheless packed full of humour, warmth and exquisite detail. You can read our four star review here, if you're interested.
If you've been wondering where you can see Poppy Hill, you can find a list of cinemas below. Although quite a few of them are in London, it's showing in lots of other cities, too, so there's sure to be somewhere near you showing it.

Studio Ghibli, brings us a slight yet charming romantic drama, From Up On Poppy Hill. Here’s Ryan’s review...
When Goro Miyazaki, son of internationally respected artist and animator Hayao Miyazaki, took on the task of directing the sprawling fantasy Tales From Earthsea in 2006, some critics argued that he’d bitten off more than he could chew. His father had coveted Ursula K Le Guin’s Earthsea books for much of his professional career, and when Miyazaki senior couldn’t direct an adaptation himself, Goro took over - and its middling critical reception must have made for some awkward breakfast conversations in the Miyazaki household.
Seven years later, and Goro Miyazaki’s back in the role of director, this time in a more contained setting. Adapted from the manga by Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsuro Sayama, From Up On Poppy Hill is a slight,...

"From Up on Poppy Hill," the latest hand-drawn Studio Ghibli animated feature, might have failed to grab an Oscar nomination last year, but it's an exquisite and engaging movie about young love and preserving the past. Gkids is expanding the film theatrically next month. (See "From Up on Poppy Hill" trailer below.) Written by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki ("Spirited Away") and directed by Goro Miyazaki, "Poppy Hill" marks the first collaboration between father and son after they had a brief falling out when Goro decided to helm "Earthsea" and Hayao didn't believe he was ready. However, the elder master had no objections to his son directing a more grounded and cross-generational story of Japan in transition as it prepares for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. While less fantastical than the typical Miyazaki movie, "Poppy Hill" is no less elegiac about honoring beauty, friendship, and tradition. The quaint Yokohama seaside town circa 1963 is...

Chicago – The torch is being passed at Studio Ghibli from the great Hayao Miyazaki (“Princess Mononoke,” “Spirited Away”) to his son Goro, who directs this week’s tender “From Up on Poppy Hill,” certainly not one of the best in the Ghibli canon but a well-made, enjoyable melodrama nonetheless. A full awareness that it’s kind of a cheap melodrama (one of the characters even says so) doesn’t change the fact that it is but the young Miyazaki’s visual palette is notably beautiful and the voice work is strong throughout. Briefly, I thought it was sweet, and how many animated films can we say that about nowadays?

The latest anime import from the talented team at Japan’s Studio Ghibli is a sweet, sentimental and beautifully animated coming-of-age story, set at a time when a whole country was trying to find its identity. Written by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, From Up on Poppy Hill is a charming bit of nostalgia that should appeal to the little folks, too. It’s not among the best works of Studio Ghibli but it is a fine family film.
The underlying theme of From Up on Poppy Hill is the need to remember the past while simultaneously moving into the future. It’s therefore appropriate that this film is the product of a father-and-son team. The movie was scripted by the great Hayao Miyazaki himself, who is listed in the credits as the film’s “planner”, but it also passes the anime torch to the next generation because the film is...

With the visual sensibilities of a Monet painting brought to life, the warm, soft animation of Studio Ghibli’s From Up on Poppy Hill recalls an age long since passed for the genre. It’s the simple beauty of the film that stands as one of its strongest aspects, and likewise the melancholy grace mirrored in some of the story elements. That’s why it’s such a shame that not everything comes together, as far flimsier plot points and misused music seek to undermine the hints of brilliance and relegate this tale to something below even a charming trifle.

In the world of feature animation, Pixar aside, there are few brands as beloved and treasured as Studio Ghibli. Co-founded by Hayao Miyazaki, it's his films that best represent the output that has gained the shingle worldwide attention, thanks to movies like "My Neighbor Totoro," "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away." But at 72 years old, Miyazaki is passing the torch to his son Goro Miyazaki who directs the upcoming "From Up On Poppy Hill." Co-written by his father with Keiko Niwa ("Tales From Earthsea," "The Secret World Of Arriety"), and based on the Japanese comic, 'Poppy Hill' tells the coming-of-age tale of Umi and Shun, two teenagers in the '60s as Japan recovers from World War II and prepares to host the 1964 Olympics. But recently, he's been handing the reins of Studio Ghibli to a new generation of filmmakers. Last year saw the release of The Secret World of Arrietty, which Miyazaki scripted, but Hiromasa Yonebayashi directed. Next up, Studio Ghibli is unveiling From Up On Poppy Hill, a coming of age tale penned in part by Hayao Miyazaki, and helmed his son Goro Miyazaki. When it comes to predicting Oscar nominations, the only thing we know for sure is that there will be surprises. The amount of awards leading up to Hollywood's biggest honors both clarify and confuse what movies and which actors are likely to land an Oscar nod.
The industry's guild awards usually make the best indicators but Golden Globes, critics awards and the British Academy (BAFTA) picks provide their own clues -- sometimes misleading.
The following predictions represent what we think will happen in nine top categories when Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announce the 2013 Oscar nominees in less than 24 hours. But we're also hoping for surprises. That's part of the fun.

Predictions: "Argo"; "Beasts of the Southern Wild"; "Django Unchained"; "Les Miserables"; "Life of Pi"; "Lincoln"; "Moonrise Kingdom"; "Silver Linings Playbook"; "Zero Dark Thirty"
Alternate picks: "Amour"; "Skyfall"

If you've been reading any of the reviews that went online at midnight last night for Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained you already know it's one bloody affair, which is reflected in the R-rating it earned today. I'll have my review either this afternoon or tomorrow, but trust when I say I'll be repeating the sentiment. In addition to the Django rating, today's batch includes PG ratings for Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away 3D and the Gkids animated feature From Up On Poppy Hill directed by Goro Miyazaki. You can click on any of the titles mentioned above for more information, otherwise, here are the latest MPAA ratings from Bulletin #2252. Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away 3D Rated PG For some dramatic images and mild sensuality. Release Date: December 21, 2012 Django Unchained Rated R For strong graphic violence throughout, a vicious fight, language and some nudity. Release Date: December 25, 2012 From Up On...

I love the art of animation, and it's amazing to see how far things have come and advanced over the years. The industry is changing in terms of technology, but what it all really comes down to is telling good stories. There's been a lot of great animated movies this year, and many of them are up for several awards at the 40th Annual Annie Awards.
Some of the movies nomainated include Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and Wreck-It Ralph. Out of those films my favorite is a toss up between Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman, those were two pretty incredible films. I think ParaNorman has the edge though.
Some of the other animated properties nominated are Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, Disney Tron: Uprising, Justice League: Doom, Robot Chicken ‘DC Comics Special', South Park ‘Raising the Bar’, and several others.

Which of 2012′s animated films drew the most applause? According to the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood, the options include Pixar’s Brave, Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, and DreamWorks’s Rise of the Guardians. All three — among others — were nominated for animation’s highest honor today when the group named the contenders for its 40th annual Annie Awards. The prizes will be distributed Saturday, Feb. 2 in Los Angeles.

Disney withdrew from the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood back in 2010 and even before then it was hard to put much stock in the Annie Awards. Now it's just sort of a blip on the overall award season radar that manages headlines twice a year, once for their nominees and again for their winners, which this year will be announced on Saturday, February 2, 2013. That said, the org announced their 2013 nominees this morning and their Best Feature Film list was made up of eight nominees (a large list considering the lack of quality animated films I've seen this year) including Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, The Rabbi's Cat and Wreck-It Ralph. It is nice not to see something like The Lorax among that list, but I still think this was a year in which the field could have easily been limited to five nominees.

I'm always inherently interested and excited for the latest films from Studio Ghibli, even if they're more fanciful work (like Arrietty or Ponyo) or dramatic (like From Up on Poppy Hill). We've been keeping an eye on their current productions, and posted before about an adaptation of the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter in the works from director Isao Takahata (of Grave of the Fireflies). However, news has now arrived via places like the Ghibli Blog & Dark Horizons that the next two features projects at Studio Ghibli have received full titles with official announcements "expected in the coming days and weeks." Both of these sound quite intriguing. First up, the Bamboo Cutter adaptation has officially been titled Kaguya-Hime no Monogatari or Princess Kaguya Story [sic], which should be next. At the helm of that is Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata, making his latest animated film since Winter Days in 2003. Their ...

Los Angeles — "Brave," "Wreck-It Ralph" and "Rise of the Guardians" are among the animated features angling for an Oscar nomination.

This year's animated feature race still feels like a mystery: Brave wasn't beloved enough to slide right into Pixar winner position; Frankenweenie wasn't popular enough despite its fun aesthetic achievements; ParaNorman was a hit but not a huge one; Madagascar 3 was very well reviewed and a huge hit but the third in a series Oscar hasn't cared for; and so on.
With 21 eligible features this year we'll have five nominees and unless either Rise of the Guardians or Wreck It Ralph (just opened) are across the board sensations, we'll have a real race.

In my predictions I had 17 animated films that looked like they would be contending for Best Animated Feature at this year's Oscars. Of those 17, all but one made the final list of what turned out to be 21 total films. Disney's joint effort with Utv Pictures, Arjun: The Warrior Prince, did not make the final list despite word it would be getting an Oscar qualifying run. My assumption is the fact the film was available on Netflix Instant before it ever had that run, which would make it ineligible, but unfortunately I was unable to get anyone from Disney on the phone for confirmation before posting this article. As for the five new films I hadn't previously counted on, they include Adventures in Zambezia, Delhi Safari, Hey Krishna, The Mystical Laws and Walter & Tandoori's Christmas. At this moment I don't have any information on these five films, but I have already...

Irish cinema seems to be in pretty good health, under the circumstances. So, never being a nation to let a good excuse for a celebration go to waste, this event brings together old and new, northern, southern and barely Irish at all. The "old" is led by a 20th anniversary screening of family comedy The Snapper, while the "new" includes comedy horror Grabbers, in which booze staves off an alien invasion. Plus-points that sit somewhere in between include last year's The Guard and Natural Grace – a stirring doc on fiddle music.

It was only a couple of months ago that we saw the first (english-subtitled) trailer for the new Studio Ghibli film, “From Up On Poppy Hill.” The film is written by Hayao Miyazaki and directed by his son, Goro Miyazaki (“Tales From Earthsea”) and the voice cast for the English-language dub has been revealed. While the Miyazaki films from the past decade have been released stateside by the Mouse House, the newest film will be released through the same company that handled the release of the Oscar-nominated “A Cat In Paris,” Gkids. For their first release they’ve rounded up an interesting group of people for the voice cast that will be led by Anton Yelchin and Sarah Bolger (Showtime series “The Tudors”), and include Gillian Anderson, Aubrey Plaza, Christina Hendricks, Beau Bridges, Jamie Lee Curtis, Bruce Dern, Ron Howard, Jeff Dunham, Isabelle Fuhrman, Chris Noth, Emily Osment, Charlie Saxton and Alex Wolff.
