A scene from Weasel’S Tale.
The Weasel’S Tale (“El Cuento De Las Comadrejas”) is a subtitled Argentine dramedy about a cluster of past-their-prime film celebrities that perfectly nails the sweet spot for presenting elderly protagonists as real, if eccentric, people. Most films or TV series starring seniors make them overly feisty or clever, presumably to attract younger viewers. For every Cocoon, there are scads of Grumpy Old Men or Golden Girls for laughs, or action films like Red that features retired spies who can still kick an outrageous amount of younger bad guy butts.
Some of those have been entertaining; others have ranged from condescending to absurd. But the age-consistent course of events here makes this one a rare treat. Think of Sunset Boulevard without a sycophant butler.

At one of its increasingly regular presentations, on Thursday Netflix Spain unveiled seven new projects including “If Only,” a Spanish adaptation of the Netflix Turkish original canceled before shooting by Turkish authorities.
Where once Netflix would host its presentations early in the year and announce its ambitions for the next 12 months, the platform’s original Spanish programming pipeline has grown to an extent that Thursday’s showcase only covers the next few months and hinted at plenty more to come in late 2021.
In both level and volume of production, the day’s announcements confirm Netflix as one of if not the, foremost investors in original Spanish series and movies, at the same as its talent pool is expanding to include ever more of the principal producers in Spain. New Netflix originals are now being produced by now-regular partners Nostromo, producers of “The Minions of Midas”; “Élite” producers Zeta Studios; “Money Heist...

Nacho Vigalondo brings his brand of humour to this Netflix original; starring Quim Gutiérrez and Clara Lago, it’s an adaptation of the comic book series by Santiago García and Pepo Pérez. Par for the course at international festivals these days, the Gijón International Film Festival garnished its 57th edition with another audiovisual dispatch from the mother ship we all know as Netflix. The Asturian festival, under the direction of Alejandro Díaz Castaño (see interview) decided to treat the guests of a gala presided over by the peerless Rodrigo Cuevas (sharing the mantle of master of ceremonies with screenwriter and journalist Henar Álvarez) to two episodes of El vecino (see news), directed by local boy (ish), Cantabria-born Nacho Vigalondo. After the show, Vigalondo and a handful of cast and crew — including stars Clara Lago, Quim Gutiérrez, Catalina Sopelana and Adrián Pino — opened the floor to the audience, some of...

The protagonist of this comedy, a screen adaptation of Santiago García and Pepo Pérez’s comic of the same name starring Quim Gutiérrez and Clara Lago, is an everyday superhero. Nacho Vigalondo has fearlessly embraced the new forms of audiovisual exhibition represented by today’s digital platforms: last year, he helmed an episode of the series Into the Dark, called Pooka, for HBO España, and he also shared the director’s chair with Borja Cobeaga (Bomb Scared) on the historical comedy Justo antes de Cristo, for Movistar+. He is currently engrossed in post-production for the series El vecino (lit. “The Neighbour”), which is toplined by Quim Gutiérrez, Clara Lago, Catalina Sopelana and Adrián Pino, and is a comedy-adventure about your average superhero next door, based on Santiago García y Pepo Pérez’s comic of the same name. It depicts the day-to-day life of Javier, a thirtysomething who is an utter failure in.

Exclusive: The director of At The End Of The Tunnel, which played in official selection recently at the Rome Film Festival, has been generating heat with two television projects.

Triple Frontera also exhibits broader dramatic elements and takes place in the tri-border region of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay that is home to the Iguazú Falls and more ominously serves as a stomping ground for drug gangs and human traffickers.

Extinction
Written by Miguel Ángel Vivas and Alberto Marini
Directed by Miguel Ángel Vivas
Spain/Hungary, 2015
Some films just can’t stick to their strengths. There are some good jump scares inside Extinction, the post-apocalyptic zombie film from Spanish director Miguel Ángel Vivas, adapted from a novel by his countrymen Juan de Dios Garduño, but Vivas (who co-wrote the script with Alberto Marini) is too keen to turn his film into a melodrama to focus on the fright. The result is a plodding zombie drama with too much tonal inconsistency to succeed as either a character study or a terrifying gorefest.
In fact, a majority of the scares are in the prelude, which at least serves the function of getting Extinction off to a promising start. In a frenetic sequences dominated by handheld shots and dizzyingly quick cuts, Vivas gives the audience a hint of the world which defines his...

Despite being somewhat of a cinematic cliché, rarely has a feature been so aptly deserving of its description as a film of two halves – since Andrés Baiz’s production The Hidden Face is a compelling tale of intersecting narratives, in a feature that could quite easily be released as two separate films.
The picture opens as wealthy, voguish orchestra conductor Adrián (Quim Gutiérrez) receives a video message from his partner Belén (Clara Lago), in which she breaks up with him. Her sudden disappearance leaves Adrián dejected, confused but keen to move on, as he swiftly becomes romantically involved with barmaid Fabiana (Martina García). The pair fall madly in love as Fabiana moves in with her new lover. However her opening few days at her new residence are tainted by a paranoia that she is being haunted, following a string of mystifying incidents taking place in the bathroom, as she is...
