Predestination
Written for the screen and directed by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig (credited as The Spierig Brothers)
Australia, 2014
Walking into Predestination clean is perhaps the best advice to offer any cinephile willing to hunt down this likely future cult classic. It would be easy to just describe Predestination as Looper tossed in a blender with Minority Report, but the Spierig Brothers are going in a very different direction here. A direction that may lose a few viewers along the way.
Ethan Hawke plays a temporal agent, a time-traveling arm of the law that travels all through the ages to prevent killers from committing crimes. His next assignment, should it prove successful, will be the agent’s last. Problem with that is the criminal he is tasked with chasing is the one who has eluded him time after time. In his last tangle with the Fizzle Bomber (yes, the name sounds absurd,...

This is writer and poet Steven Boyle. And this is his spoken word poem "I Hit Send, or Modern Meltdown," which he performed at Penn State earlier this year (but which was recently resurfaced on Roygbiv). Yes, the poem discusses his fears of coming out—which, really, are all gay teens' fears of coming out—and the freedom you feel once you do. But it also talks about something that anyone, gay or straight, can relate to: Crushing in the 21st century. Because we don't pass notes or ask each other to the ice cream shop anymore. We text. We have entire relationships that play out over SMS, and we read into each one. What does "haha" mean versus "hahah"? What does a winky emoji...

In the outrageous video for “Ain't That a Bitch” from their new album Silent Machine, Australian rockers Twelve Foot Ninja put a literal spin on the concept of that most despised of subhuman species, the Internet troll, and seek revenge on the foul creature in the most violent manner possible. In addition to making waves for its shocking content (presented here in the uncensored Director's Cut), the video also gained recent fame as the world's most successful crowd-funded short film, bringing in over $45,000 from fan contributions. That funding was put to good use, as the band called upon Penthouse Pet Madison Rhys, a seven-foot Alaskan brown bear, Us metallers Periphery, and top-tier makeup FX artist Steven Boyle (The Hobbit) to bring their grisly revenge tale to life. “The difference between a troll and critic is that there is a line internet trolls step over,” explains the band's guitarist, Steve “Stevic” MacKay.

Shane Krause has a refreshingly candid view of the commercial prospects of The Contents, a self-funded supernatural thriller which marks his directing debut.
.If the film turns out to be any good we will get interest. from distributors and sales agents, says Krause, who co-wrote and produced the film with his regular collaborator Shayne Armstrong.
.If it doesn.t it will die the death it deserves to. The amount of money at risk is pitifully small. If it doesn.t work no one gets hurt..
The cast and a small crew worked irregularly on the film for the past six months shooting on locations in Brisbane. It.s 80% completed; still to come are the visual effects elements created by Steve Boyle whose credits include The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Bait 3D, Daybreakers and who.s just worked on Chris Sun.s low budget horror film Charlie.s Farm.

Few horror movie killers can rank among the top tier slaughter stars we've all come to love, but damn it, they try. Well, guess what, kids? Another is on his way, and one thing is certain: He has the girth to muscle in!
From the Charlie's Farm Facebook page:
Since the 1970's the world has been seen the rise of some of the most iconic killers, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger and Thomas Hewitt (Leatherface). Australia has had its fair share of Amazing horror films from Patrick, Lake Mungo, Snow Town, Razorback, The Loved Ones, and of course the legend himself "Greg McLean" with Wolf Creek and now Wolf Creek 2 to name only a few.
The problem is Australia has never had a killer with the status of the American killers; Voorhees has had over 160 kills in his career and is hands down one of the most feared killers on the planet.

A film centred around sharks attacking people in a flooded supermarket isn.t often compared to the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and actor Sam Shepard. But leave aside the unique challenges of shooting in water for nine weeks with actors (including children) standing on shelves, and a mix of animatronic and computer-generated sharks . all captured in 3D . and that.s exactly what you.re left with according to director Kimble Rendall.
.Once we were working with the actors it was a bit like doing a Sam Shepard play on the stage because it really was like a theatre. There were eight actors out on the set and they don.t really leave,. although he laughingly adds .some of them leave . not by choice..
It is still a shark movie after all.
It begins with former couple Josh (Xavier Samuel) and Tina (Sharni Vinson) who come face-to-face in a supermarket...

Greg Connors’ low-budget sci-fi film The Dark Lurking will debut in Sydney this weekend but it has already been a victim of piracy, even though so far it has only been screened at festivals.
“It’s a kick in the guts; a lot of people are downloading it. A friend in Shanghai went to a video store there, and they had two shelves of our film on DVD, stacked between Transformers 2 and Transporter 3,” producer Bret Connors told Encore.
“A lot of the people that have seen the movie are from territories where there have been no sales, so we’re losing potential sales,” he added.
Piracy is indeed a bigger problem for an independent film that has struggled for years to become a reality.
The Dark Lurking is set in 2017, and something has gone wrong at an underground research facility, where a dangerous horde of creatures is on the loose.

Director: Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig Writers: Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig Certificate: 18 Running time: 94 minutes DVD and Blu-ray release date: May 31 2010 Studio: Lions Gate Home Entertainment Number of discs: 1 Price: From £9.99 Starring: Willem Dafoe, Ethan Hawke, Sam Neill, Claudia Karvan The vampire genre has been considerably well-worn in the last year, yet new vamp flick Daybreakers manages to adopt a fresh angle with vampires who have taken over the world facing extinction themselves as human blood supplies diminish. The opening scene of a little girl vampire committing suicide by sitting outside at sunrise sets the tone for the whole film as the vampire genre is almost turned up on its head. A world where vampires rule is convincingly created through attention to detail: a homeless man walks with a sign around his neck reading “Starving: blood needed”, cafe signs say “Still serving 20% blood”, news bulletins announce “Blood shortages cripple...

In terms of allegory, the ravenous antics of the undead have found steady employment standing in for everything from soulless consumerism (Dawn of the Dead) to insurgency (28 Weeks Later), but almost always in the form of zombies. Vampires on the other hand, with all that repressed emotion, are all about making the sex (or, more often, not). Taking their 2003 idea of a sleepy Australian fishing berg overrun by flesh eaters and expanding it to encompass the whole world, German helmers, The Brothers Spierig, have turned the established order upside down and taken the vampire movie political.
Set in an alternate future Daybreakers posits a world where vampires are now the dominant race, and humans, hunted and herded into farms for their blood supply, are on the verge of extinction. Blood is running out, and without blood the vampire population, pale-faced and red eyed, degenerate into winged beasts. Aside from a crackdown on these dangerous,...

In a near-future world, a virus has rendered 95 percent of the population addicted to blood. In order to get their daily sustenance amidst rapidly dwindling supplies, some have taken their new vampire lifestyles to extremes. But that’s Ok, because there are more than a few weapon-wielding members of a vamp army dedicated to restraining them. Meanwhile, a few of the five percent unaffected are holed up in an abandoned winery; from this base, “the resistance” are involved in the ongoing fight against the blood-drinkers and developing a synthetic plasma replacement that could ensure their survival.

Daybreakers (which opens in North America on January 8th, 2010 - read our advance review here) is the newest film from Michael and Peter Spierig, creators of the cult hit zombie film Undead. After a successful screening at the Toronto International Film Festival the two were happy to talk about how their new and original vampire tale took shape.
“We were interested in doing a vampire movie that subverted and did something different with popular culture and the vampire myth. We worked on the script for over two years and really tried to twist everything in a different direction,” Peter states. In this film, vampires have literally taken over the cities of the world. Yet, the only immediately obvious change is that the “nine to five” workday instead starts at sunset and ends at sunrise. With the human population almost non-existent, Ethan Hawke’s vampire/haematologist Edward Dalton hopes to create...
