Director/writer Jeymes Samuel seems to have been inspired by those Hollywood’s long tradition of epic Biblical movies, like Ben Hur and The Robe to try his own version of those big-screen extravaganzas mixing Bible stories with adventure and action for The Book Of Clarence – but with a big comic twist. With a plenty of humor, some social commentary and with a mostly Black cast playing the Jewish population of “Lower Jerusalem” in 33 A.D., Jeymes Samuel aimed to create a new, entertaining version of this venerable movie genre. The result is a movie with one foot in something like Ben Hur crossed with Monty Python’s Life Of Brian, with a touch of Mel Brooks’ History Of The World Part 1. The Book Of Clarence is a cinematic creation that teeters precariously and...

It’s just another day on the mean streets of Judea circa 33 A.D., where people hang out on sunbaked corners talking smack, working-class stiffs scramble to get by, and Roman centurions — the LAPD of their day — stop and frisk anyone who they feel matches the description of a suspect. (As in: anyone that does not look like a white Roman centurion.) If you’re lucky, you might get to see a chariot street race already in progress, like the one between Clarence (Lakeith Stanfield) and Mary Magdalene (Teyana Taylor...

It was a moment film nerds could only dream of: Actor/director Joe Lynch was seated next to Quentin Tarantino at an event, and they were going deep on lenses. Specifically, how Tarantino had gotten his mitts on Ultra Panavision 70, a 70mm format from Ben Hur, for his 2015 Western The Hateful Eight. Not much could distract Lynch from a moment like that — until he heard Stuart Gordon, of Re-Animator fame, discussing his latest collaboration with screenwriter Dennis Paoli: a modern-day retelling of H.P. Lovecraft’s story “The Thing at the Doorstep” called Suitable Flesh.

Back in 2021, the BFI London Film Festival opened in the most audacious and A-list manner seen in many years. With the curtain-raising slot usually reserved for more somber, prestige dramas, Netflix’s all-star, all-Black rootin’ tootin’ Western The Harder They Fall — with an ensemble cast including Regina King, Idris Elba, Lakeith Stanfield, Jonathan Majors, Delroy Lindo and Zazie Beets — brought the house down, with noise levels at London’s Royal Festival Hall skyrocketing further when producer Jay-Z and Beyonce showed up.
The Harder They Fall also welcomed an exciting new filmmaking face to the cinematic fold in local London boy Jeymes Samuel, the debut director previously better known by his singer/songwriter and music producer moniker The Bullitts.
Two years on, and Samuel is returning to the London Film Festival for the world premiere of his follow-up — The Book of Clarence — a film just as bold, creative and wild as his first,...

There are compliments and there are compliments. For a young Italian actress making her big screen debut, being compared to Giulietta Masina — best known for her work in front of the camera of Federico Fellini (who also doubled up as her husband), most notably La Strada and Nights of Cabiria — it’s definitely one of the better ones to receive.
But it was this that, Rebecca Antonaci explains, led director Saverio Costanzo to cast her as the lead in his Venice-bowing drama Finally Dawn (Finalmente L’alba in Italian). “Saverio told me that I, in some way, reminded him of Messina,” the 18-year-old says, speaking from Rome.
If Costanzo was looking for someone who could capture Masina’s renowned youthful, wide-eyed innocence, he certainly found it with this newcomer.

Italy’s Cinecittà studios have returned to profit one year ahead of the schedule set in its 2022 to 2026 industrial plan, aimed at returning the facility to its former glory as a major international filming hub.
It is the first time the complex’s results have been in the black since it was taken back under state control in 2017, after being run into the ground under private ownership for more than two decades.
Parent body Cinecittà S.p.A announced a $1.9 million (1.8 million euros) net profit for 2022, and a doubling of turnover to $42.3 million (39 million euros) against 2021, mainly on the back of a raft of bookings for the facilities.
The company said the complex had been booked to above 75% capacity in 2022, against 31% in 2021, a trend that has continued into 2023.
Detailing the $42 million turnover, Cinecittà S.p.A said $37.4 million (34.5 million euros) was related to the soundstages, venues, and set designs, with...

A fire broke out on Monday at Italy’s legendary Cinecittà Studios in Rome.
According to local reports, the flames — which erupted on a set depicting Renaissance Florence in the process of being decommissioned — were soon brought under control by three teams of firefighters, and didn’t result in any injuries or major damage.
“The fire has been extinguished. There are no injuries, no poisoning, no serious material damage,” Studios spokesperson Marlon Pellegrini said in a statement.
Despite not causing any major damage, the fire did disrupt the start of filming of Netflix’s The Old Guard 2, starring Charlize Theron. Production coordinator Natalia Barbosa told Afp that high winds and soaring temperatures saw the fire grow rapidly, with the set evacuated as a precaution. “We’ve lost two days of filming,” she said.

Fire broke out at Italy’s historic Cinecittà Studios on Monday afternoon (August 1), destroying part of an old set depicting Renaissance Florence, which was in the process of being dismantled, and disrupted Netflix film Old Guard 2.
Local media reported the fire was declared mid-afternoon and that plumes of smoke could be seen for miles around.
Three fire-fighting teams were dispatched to the scene and managed to get the blaze under control by early evening.
A Cinecittà Studios spokesperson said late Monday that the fire was under control and that there had been no injuries or serious damage done to the site. The cause of the fire has yet to be ascertained.
The threat of fires spinning out of control is particularly acute in Europe at the moment amid record-breaking temperatures this summer.

For a mostly progressive film, Birds of Prey's choice to queer code villains Roman Sionis and Victor Zsasz is an odd and problematic one.
Ewan McGregor’s Ramon Sionis, Aka Black Mask, has received near-universal praise for his performance as the intense, megalomaniacal villain in Birds of Prey, while Chris Messina’s Victor Zsasz has been applauded for a role deviating from his usual leading man fare. The pair have an obsessive dynamic where one feeds off of the other, though from scene to scene it’s unclear who is the parasite and who is the host.
Another fixture of this critical appraisal? Descriptors like flamboyant, campy and preening. The Chicago Sun-Times hits him with “flashy...preening and pouting.” Rolling Stone describes Zsasz as Sionis’s “boytoy.” That Star dropped any pretense and called him Liberace. That is to say, even those who aren’t explicitly...

There are a lot of words you can use to describe the cartoon villains of your childhood. Creepy, sometimes disfigured, occasionally downright nightmarish? Sure. But hot? Villains from '90s animated movies were usually the furthest thing from attractive. That's why fans were shocked when the first look at the upcoming live-action remake of Disney's Aladdin came out - and Aladdin was not the only hot dude in the picture. That's right, folks, you heard it here: Jafar is . . . sexy? So, who's the charismatic actor bringing a new take to this iconic villain?

Things were a bit different at this year’s Governors Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences annual gala in which honorary Oscars are presented to icons of the film industry.
Instead of being held two Saturdays before Thanksgiving, the ceremony took place the Sunday just before Turkey Day due to scheduling conflicts at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood. For the first time, a deejay provided the tunes during the cocktail reception. And, like so many events in the past week, the red carpet was scaled back to photos-only out of respect for the victims of the California wildfires.
“This devastating fire so close to our own homes and those of our friends has bonded us in a special way,” academy president John Bailey said during his opening remarks, adding, “Many thousands of our fellow Americans are homeless living in tents. Nearly 1,400 people are still unaccounted for.
