Exclusive: More than a hit song, “Stand by Me,” by Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller and Ben E. King, has transcended the notion of a “standard” — it’s been recorded more than 1,000 times and has made more appearances on the Billboard Hot 100 chart than any other song.
Music and media producer Spencer Proffer and his music-anchored production company Meteor 17 have been selected to produce the authorized feature-length documentary about the iconic song and its significant global impact for over six decades. Emmy and Grammy nominated director J. Kevin Swain — who has directed music videos and other projects for and with Mary J. Blige, Wynton Marsalis, Queen Latifah — has been selected by Proffer to bring the story of the song to the screen.
As part of the film, Emmy- and Grammy-winning producer, composer, musical director and musician Steve Jordan will produce a new version of “Stand by Me.” Jordan has worked with artists including Keith Richards,...

Jamie Demetriou has been on a comedic rise for several years.
In the U.K., he’s arguably best known as the creator and star of Channel 4 sitcom Stath Lets Flats, in which his inept, awkward, rude and delusional Greek-Cypriot rental agent Stath Charalambos — considered one of the best comic creations since Steve Coogan’s Alan Partridge — has won him countless fans inside the industry and out (in 2020 he won three BAFTA TV awards).
Over in the U.S. — where the show airs on HBO — he’s probably more recognizable for a growing number of short but often scene-stealing TV and film appearances, including in Fleabag (the guy with big teeth in season 1), Paddington 2 (one of the bear’s fellow prison inmates known as The Professor), The Great (playing Doctor Chekhov) and Eurovision: The Story of Fire Saga (camp artistic director Kevin Swain). He’s also due to...

Here is one of the more interesting and worthwhile IndieGoGo funding campaigns to come our way lately. It’s for the concert film/documentary, Of Dreams To Come: Robert Glasper, which is about the acclaimed jazz pianist and the winner for this year’s Grammy Award for the Best R&B Album of the Year, Robert Glasper and his band, The Robert Glasper Experiment.According to director J. Kevin Swain, who has spent more than a decade producing music videos and directing documentaries and TV movies, including Soul Train: The Hippest Trip in America for VH1, says the film “will echo the early tour films of Bob Dylan's "Don't Look Back". U2's "Rattle and Hun" and...

If you’re going to remake Truffaut, you might as well do the job on a lesser-known effort. Such a mentality makes this news a bit easier to work out, as Shadow&Act has learned that Common (Terminator Salvation, Hell on Wheels) will star in an update of the director’s 1977 outing, The Man Who Loved Women. (This is a film that was first remade in 1983, with Blake Edwards directing — if you can believe this pairing — Burt Reynolds and Julie Andrews. People have indicated it’s not very good.) Director J. Kevin Swain — whose prior work consists of music videos and, on a related note, music-related television documentaries — will make his debut on the film.
Truffaut‘s film centered on Bertrand Morane, a French man who, in writing his autobiography, details the various romantic conquests he’s managed to accrue throughout the years; in this outing, Common will be seen...

Perhaps we should all agree the term “urban update” should be kept as far away from studio pitches as possible? The descriptor -- besides sounding like a mandatory software patch -- just does not do the film it's touting any favors whatsoever. But, that hasn't stopped the latest remake to be deigned as such from picking up a charismatic leading man in rapper/actor Common, and worthy source material in Francois Truffaut's 1977 film “The Man Who Loved Women.”
Shadow and Act reports that the update, which comes after a pretty dismal Blake Edwards remake starring Burt Reynolds and Julie Andrews, will transplant the original film's Paris location to Buenos Aires, where Marc Guiness (Common) decides to pen a memoir about the myriad relationships throughout his life. First-time feature director J. Kevin Swain, who has 'til now made a name with music videos and, er, “Being Bobby Brown,” will helm the project,...

Common is attached to star in an "urban update" of Francois Truffaut's 1977 romantic comedy classic The Man Who Loved Women for writer and director J. Kevin Swain. The film was previously remade in 1983 by director Blake Edwards with Burt Reynolds and Julie Andrews. However, instead of Paris or Los Angeles, Swain's version will be set in Buenos Aires, with Common playing Marc Guiness, a world famous artist, who decides to write down his memoirs about his life with women. There's a dramatic plot twist, but if you haven't seen either the Truffaut or the Edwards version, I won't spoil it for you. Currently Swain is pursuing Alicia Keys, Taraji...
