Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with the Paul King-directed and co-written Wonka. From Warner Bros, Village Roadshow and Heyday Films, the Timothée Chalamet starrer is also co-written by Simon Farnaby based on characters created by Roald Dahl.
Wonka, from Harry Potter producer David Heyman and Paddington director King, sees Chalamet in the titular role of the enigmatic candy maker. The origin story/musical also stars Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman, Jim Carter and Matt Lucas. Hugh Grant plays the “something of a whopper” Oompa-Loompa named Lofty.
Excitement for the holiday release was first stoked back at CinemaCon in April 2022, and with the first two weekends of global rollout now just behind us, the movie has made upwards of $150 million worldwide with plenty of play ahead. It’s at 84% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 91% score from audiences.

No one really asked for a prequel to "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" that focused on the origin of a future psychotic child murderer -- especially if it meant losing a third Paul King "Paddington" movie. Even fewer people could have predicted that "Wonka" would end up being a pretty great film. As our own Ethan Anderton wrote in this review, the film has a "well-thought-out story that doesn't even lean heavily on nostalgia or cheeky references to the classic film adaptation."
Indeed, the film is a riot. Paul King delivers a whimsical, colorful holiday film for the whole family that features a fantastic ensemble that steals every scene they're in, and there's a sense of whimsy that is reminiscent of King's "Paddington" movies. Timothée Chalamet finds the right balance between homaging Gene Wilder and doing his own weird little chocolate-loving psycho. There are even hints of some of...

They were all young once: Don Corleone and Darth Vader, Butch and Sundance, Hannibal and Leatherface, Maleficent and Cruella. And long before he was the world’s best-known chocolatier and distributor of life-changing golden tickets, William “Willy” Wonka was just a twentysomething kid with a top hat, a sweet tooth, and a dream.
For decades, we could only guess how the bright-eyed lad became the candymaker-in-chief. This is where Wonka comes in. A prequel that seeks to both fill in the blanks regarding Roald Dahl’s eccentric sugar pimp and...

The joyous strains of “Pure Imagination” lead into an equally joyous celebration of life – and chocolate – in Warner Bros Pictures’ Wonka. Movie fans could have had a one-two Timothée Chalamet punch if Dune 2 hadn’t been pulled from the theatrical release calendar. But for now, Chalamaniacs will have to settle for seeing the ever-charming actor light up the screen in the prequel to 1971’s Willa Wonka & The Chocolate Factory.
Chalamet is no Gene Wilder, but then again, no one can fill Wilder’s shoes. Not even Johnny Depp came close in 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Still, comparisons aside, Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name) proved to be an excellent choice to play the overly optimistic chocolatier with huge dreams and an even bigger heart.

Hugh Grant "hated" playing an Oompa-Loompa in 'Wonka'.The 63-year-old actor stars as the diminutive, orange-faced Lofty in the new movie – a prequel to Roald Dahl's classic story 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' – and admits that he loathed the filmmaking process that enabled animators to capture the appearance of his character.Hugh told reporters at a press conference for the flick: "It was like a crown of thorns, very uncomfortable."I made a big fuss about it. I couldn't have hated the whole thing more."Hugh explained that his displeasure came from not being certain whether he was supposed to act with his entire body or just through his facial expressions. The 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' star said: "I never received a satisfactory answer. And frankly, what I did with my body was terrible, and it's all been replaced with an animator."Hugh later...

With Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel Wonka hitting theaters on December 15th, it won’t be long before audiences get a golden ticket to the highly-anticipated blockbuster starring Timothée Chalamet. The making of the confectionary flick wasn’t all sweet, though — at least not for Hugh Grant, who shared his discontentment this week about the shooting process for the film.
More specifically, Grant apparently took issue with the process of working with CGI motion capture to portray his role as Lofty, an Oompa Loompa. During a recent press conference (via Metro UK), Grant compared the cameras he had to wear to “a crown of thorns,” saying that he made a major fuss about the process. “I couldn’t have hated the whole thing more,” he lamented.
Grant explained that he did not know whether to act with just his face or with his entire body, adding, “I never received a satisfactory answer.

A year ago we couldn’t have said definitively whether Wonka would be a delightful musical extravaganza or a total disaster. Either outcome seemed plausible. After all, was anyone actually clamoring for yet another version of the mysterious, magical chocolatier from Roald Dahl’s beloved book series?...

The first reactions to Paul King’s Wonka, the prequel to Roald Dahl’s beloved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, are in, with much praise for the film’s star Timothée Chalamet as the enigmatic Willy Wonka.
The origin film follows Chalamet’s Willy Wonka from his beginnings selling candy in a small shop to his rise as an eccentric genius chocolatier and the creation of his fantastical chocolate factory.
“#Wonka/ #WonkaMovie is a winning confection, filled with perfect amounts of charm, whimsy & poignancy, powered by pure imagination & bright, nimble musical numbers,” wrote Courtney Howard. “Timothée Chalamet is a charisma factory. His full committal is intoxicating. Hugh Grant in exceptional Idgaf mode.”
Gizmodo senior reporter Germain Lussier wrote that Chalamet “alone is reason to see the film,” adding “He’s infinitely charming and a blast to watch.” However, he wrote, “The movie around him isn’t as good but it’s enjoyable.

'Wonka' director Paul King has defended the decision to cast Hugh Grant as an Oompa-Loompa.The 63-year-old actor portrays the diminutive Lofty in the origin story for Roald Dahl's famous 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' character and the filmmaker felt that the 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' star fitted the part despite criticism that an actor with dwarfism was not cast.Paul told BBC News: "Dahl describes (the Oompa-Loompas) as no higher than my knee or about the size of a medium size doll."We tried to use the iconic look that they came up with in the 1971 movie with the green hair and the orange skin, and merge that with the way Dahl described them, in a way I think they may have done, had they had the technology we have today."Grant's role was questioned earlier this year by George Coppen,...

For Timothée Chalamet, starring in “Wonka” as the titular eccentric chocolatier is still the stuff of pure imagination.
At the film’s Tokyo premiere on Monday night, Chalamet donned a purple Prada jumpsuit and joined co-star Hugh Grant — who plays an Oompa-Loompa named Lofty — on stage to say a few words about what the role means to him.
“Paul King wrote a beautiful script here, about a young Willy Wonka who follows his dreams,” Chalamet said. “If you would’ve told me when I was 12 years old, when I was 10 years old watching the Johnny Depp version of Willy Wonka that I’d get to be here in Tokyo promoting this movie as Willy Wonka, standing next to Hugh Grant, I would’ve told you you were lying. So, I guess like the movie, follow your dreams.”

What makes Willy Wonka such a maverick? It’s not his inventive confections, nor his inventive wardrobe, nor his inventive methods of torturing naughty children. No, what really sets Mr. Wonka apart is his willingness to sell chocolate at reasonable prices affordable to the working class.
