In a cold storage facility two miles south of downtown Los Angeles, the “Lucha Underground” ring sits empty. A day’s worth of dust settles on the seats and bleachers that were once filled with rabid fans chanting “Cero Miedo.” The lights that give the impromptu arena a pulpy comic book feel are off, leaving it feeling as lifeless and abandoned as it was when the cult wrestling TV show’s production team first found it.
But around the corner, in the darkest, dustiest area of the facility, Skip Chaisson is filming the type of scene he originally visualized when he found this decrepit location. Standing in his camera monitor, bathed in lights that shine beneath creaky floorboards, is Matanza Cueto, the ferocious, murderous man possessed by a bloodthirsty Aztec god. When Chaisson chose this cold storage site as the location for “Lucha Underground”‘s season 4, which concludes this week on El Rey Network,...

“Lucha Underground” has become a cult hit with wrestling fans, thanks in large part to the elaborate backstage segments that have given the show an otherworldly mythology that has gotten bigger with each season. Skip Chaisson, director of those cutscenes, takes TheWrap behind the scenes with notes on his favorite shots from the El Rey series and what inspired them.
Episode 1: The Opening Fight Scene: “Inspired by an old El Santo comic, this was our first big fight. It established what we were doing with Lucha “real world” fights.
Episode 4: King Cuerno’s introduction: “This was one of the moments where I knew we were on to something. The sun was setting and King walks out to the edge of the roof a la “The Dark Knight” with no fear, a total badass hero come to life.”

With a towel shrouding his face, pro wrestler Shane Strickland is helped to an ambulance waiting outside the abandoned Boyle Heights factory where he just brawled for more than half an hour. His back is covered in fresh wounds shiny with blood and small, glimmering pieces of broken glass.
Over his shoulder, stage crews sweep away shards on which his body was repeatedly slammed, with cruel abandon. Among the debris carted away is a broken medical stretcher with a large chunk of human skin on it, a pile of broken tables, dented metal chairs, and several yards of barbed wire. A woman hoses down a blood-stained wrestling ring for the third time this evening.
Scattered around the ambulance are dozens of Strickland’s fans, who offer stunned applause and cuss-filled cheers as his wounds are treated. In one dripping, sanguified hand, Strickland holds a black mask that bears a marksman’s crosshairs on the front.

El Rey Network awakens the renegade in everyone. Created and curated by Robert Rodriguez and his collective, it's unfiltered, kick-ass entertainment, as you'll see from this new promo for the channel, which launches in December 2013.
Filmmaker and network founder Robert Rodriguez was the creative director for the below video (and he did actually plays the guitar riffs in the spot), and Skip Film, headed by Skip Chaisson, was the agency that consulted on the creative execution and produced the campaign for the network.
We'll be keeping an eye on El Rey for its upcoming "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" of course although no doubt there will be plenty more for the genre crowd on its way soon.

Kevin revealed this morning that Joe Carnahan took to Twitter to reveal his pitch for a new Daredevil movie at Fox wasn't going to happen. "Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-styled superhero went up in smoke today kids," He added, "We shall see. Time is Not on anyone's side." Time for Fox definitely isn't on anyone's side unless you're Marvel, side as Variety reports Fox's request to extend their rights on the Daredevil property have been denied and will have no choice but to allow the rights to go back to Marvel. The deadline at this point to have a film in production is October 10 and it looks like that isn't happening. Fox is still planning a Fantastic Four reboot with Chronicle helmer Josh Trank directing as that is also another property that could end up in Marvel's hands if something doesn't happen soon, but it has...

Terence Winter, a writer and executive producer of The Sopranos, has been drafted into The Warriors gang. The scribe will write the remake of the 1979 street-gang classic The Warriors that Tony Scott is directing for MTV Films and Scott Free Prods. Paramount Pictures is distributing. Scott's version will follow the outline of the first film -- in which a gang leader is assassinated during a truce, and The Warriors, wrongly accused of the assassination, must make their way home through hostile gang territories -- while updating the heightend reality of the original film for contemporary audiences. The original was directed by Walter Hill and was written by Hill and David Shaber. David Gale is producing with Scott, while MTV Films' Van Toffler is executive producing with Skip Chaisson. Winter was Emmy-nominated five times for his work on Sopranos. In 2002, he won a WGA Award in the television category that he shared with writer Timothy Van Patten for writing the "Pine Barrens" episode of the HBO series. Winter is repped by CAA.
