Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for “Life Is a Highway,” the eighth episode of “The Girls on the Bus” Season 1, now streaming on Max.
When Rina Mimoun first produced an episode of television about abortion, she had no idea she’d be doing the same thing more than two decades later. “The Girls on the Bus” showrunner, who worked with Greg Berlanti on the “very special episode” of “Everwood” about women’s rights in 2001, did just that with the eighth episode of the Max series, which debuted on Thursday.
The episode picked up right where they last left off: Sadie (Melissa Benoist) ordered abortion pills to be delivered to her California hotel while on the campaign trail; when they didn’t arrive in time, she was stuck, as the next state on the trip was Missouri — where abortion is illegal. After telling the other women about her dilemma in...

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains light spoilers for Episode 8 of “The Girls on the Bus.”]
On the April 25 episode of Max’s “The Girls on the Bus,” Sadie (Melissa Benoist) had an abortion.
The matter-of-fact decision for the young reporter is only (“only!”) complicated by the all-too-real problem of Sadie’s political journo travel schedule, and the differing rules of which U.S. state she is in when and how to legally ship the needed pills to the correct location.
“It has to be specific, because I was like, ‘They’re not [campaigning in] a Democratic primary in a deep red state,'” co-creator Amy Chozick, whose reporting memoir upon which the show is based, explained about the logistics. “Then, of course, the rules were changing. We literally had a map of the U.S. in the writers room like, ‘Ok, they could be realistically campaigning in Missouri, and it is still legal in Illinois,’ so we were actually moving pieces of...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Girls on the Bus Season 1, Episode 3, “The Audacity of Nope.”] The campaign trail continues in Max‘s The Girls on the Bus, and viewers got a closer look at Scott Foley’s candidate, Hayden Wells Garrett, in more than ways than one. The irony isn’t lost on the former Scandal star that he’s playing presidential candidate now, like his former costar Tony Goldwyn. “I was so excited to do this. Rina Mimoun, who’s the showrunner, and I had worked on a pilot before that didn’t make it to air, and when she called me and told me about this, I was excited at the chance to get to do it again,” Foley tells TV Insider of taking on the part. Max “I was excited at the chance of playing this guy, but I hung up the phone and I said to my wife, I was like,...

Melissa Benoist is set to fly high on her newest show “The Girls on the Bus.” The “Supergirl” alum stars in the Max series as a political journalist who hits the campaign trail alongside three other female reporters.
In a rowdy presidential campaign year with a tumultuous climate, the actor feels that the streamer will do more than entertain. She thinks it could inspire young people to vote in November.
“I think that every single election is an important election and they always have been,” Benoist told Variety at the show’s premiere in New York City on Tuesday night. “Hopefully this show will encourage people and maybe younger people to remain passionate and informed and have their voices heard.”
Rounding out the cast are Carla Gugino, Natasha Behnam, and Christina Elmore. As their characters travel on the press bus, a strong sisterhood develops despite different personalities, beliefs and the...

“The Girls on the Bus,” Max’s long-in-the-works journalism dramedy series from the producers of “The Flight Attendant,” finally has a trailer.
The series follows four women as they work as embedded political reporters on a presidential campaign trail. There’s idealistic Sadie McCarthy (Melissa Benoist), who works for a respectable newspaper; Grace (Carla Gugino), a veteran reporter whose hard-nosed style gets scoops and makes enemies; Kimberlyn (Christina Elmore), a Black conservative who works for a right-wing news channel; and Lola (Natasha Benham), who thinks traditional journalism is ancient and social media is where it’s at. Though they’re all very competitive and different from each other, they develop a close bond as they work within the pressure cooker environment of the campaign trail.
The cast also includes Scott Foley, Brandon Scott, Griffin Dunne, and Mark Consuelos.

There’s no fear and loathing on the campaign trail here for Max’s female journalist-led comedy “The Girls on the Bus.” The series, which is executive produced by the team behind “The Flight Attendant,” follows four political reporters along the (fictional) campaign trail as friendship, love, and yes, even a government conspiracy, complicate their lives.
The official synopsis reads: “‘The Girls on the Bus’ invites viewers to hit the campaign trail alongside four female journalists, each of them different in their reporting styles and personalities. A group of screenwriters including Eli Roth, Graham Yost and Amy Chozick have issued an open letter decrying the Writers Guild of America’s silence on last week’s Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel.
In the letter, posted to the blog site Medium, the screenwriters mention the statements already issued by other Hollywood guilds, including SAG-AFTRA and the directors’ guild.
“When it comes to taking a stand, the Writers Guild of America has always led by example,” the statement said. “When employers sought to exploit our work, the Guild bravely spoke up. When the BLM movement took flight, the Guild rightfully spoke up. When the #MeToo reckoning came and Hollywood needed to change, again the Guild spoke up. But when terrorists invaded Israel to murder, rape, and kidnap Jews… the Guild stayed silent. It remains the only major Hollywood union to do so.”

Exclusive: Mark Consuelos has joined the cast of HBO Max’s The Girls on the Bus in a recurring role.
Consuelos will portray a major Hollywood action star-turned-politician who joined the presidential race after a Twitter poll said 46 percent of Americans would vote for him — regardless of party affiliation.
From writers Amy Chozick and Julie Plec, The Girls On The Bus centers on Sadie McCarthy (Melissa Benoist), a journalist who romanticizes Tim Crouse’s Boys on the Bus book and who scrapped her whole life for her own shot at covering a presidential campaign for the paper of record. Sadie hits the trail and eventually bonds with three female competitors, Grace (Carla Gugino), Lola (Natasha Behnam), and Kimberlyn (Christina Elmore). Despite their differences, the women become a found family with a front-row seat to the greatest soap opera in town: the battle for the White House.
