The nineteenth episode of the second season of "Star Trek," called "A Private Little War" has long been viewed as a metaphor for the Vietnam War. It involves the proliferation of arms, the deliberate involvement in another nation's civil war, and the nature of the Prime Directive. It also ends on a line of dialogue that can be read one of two ways. To this author, the ending of "A Private Little War" is clear. A quick poll of Trekkies, however, finds that many others interpret the ending in the opposite way. Let us delve.
At the beginning of "A Private Little War," Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Commander Spock (Leonard Nimoy) are visiting a placid planet called Neural. The visit is leaving Kirk feeling nostalgic, as this planet was the site of his first planetary survey when he was a mere lieutenant some 13 years prior. Kirk points out that...

Pekka Strang stars as the Finnish wartime artist Touko Laaksonen, whose homoerotic illustrations helped create the iconography of gay culture
Finnish artist Touko Laaksonen, known by his nom de plume Tom of Finland, is brought above the radar of cultural history in this well-acted biopic.
In postwar Helsinki, in conditions of the gravest illegality, Laaksonen produced thousands on thousands of homoerotic fetish illustrations, showing bulgingly endowed leather-clad guys having an unapologetic good time. Tom of Finland’s work reached the liberated Us in the 1960s via mail order, and he became a counterculture hero of gay liberation, virtually inventing a whole language of hedonism that influenced Queen, the Village People and the club scene.

Although Rob Lowe relished the opportunity to research and play “the Yoda of gigolos” in his new film How to Be a Latin Lover, he didn’t take any of his work home with him.
“Listen, who does Luke Skywalker go to for the answers to the universe? You go to Yoda, he is the keeper of the secrets, he is the expert in stories,” Lowe tells People of his reasoning behind the nickname he gave his character — a veteran gigolo who prays on wealthy older women. “He takes what he does so seriously, it is legitimately life and death for him.

Last week, we brought word that it appeared as though Joker and Riddler would be going head to head in the pages of Batman this June and, thanks to a freshly released batch of solicits, we now know that it’s an absolute certainty. Not only that, but we’ve also learned what’s on the horizon for related books such as All-Star Batman, Batgirl and Super Sons.
First, let’s talk about Batman, since I imagine you’re all anxious to hear about that one. As it turns out, we’re still in the dark when it comes to the wealth of the plot, but seeing as how DC is invoking the holy names of masterworks such as Year One and The Long Halloween, we can only assume that rumors saying the upcoming...

And so we’ve hit the home stretch for this year’s Halloween season. If your preferred method of celebration involves dressing up for the occasion, we came up with a handful of costume ideas inspired by the 2016 indie film world.
Period pieces, genre fare and absurdist thrillers all brought us iconic characters and distinct looks replicable for any big costume gathering you might be attending in the week to come. Beyond our simple how-to lists, we’ve also tried to give our reasoning for ditching the slutty pirate garb and going for something that might ingratiate yourselves with new cinephile friends.
[Note: Because some of these costumes hinge on some late-film developments, a few spoilers for 2016 indie film releases follow.]

Directed by: Wayne Berwick
Cast: Jackie Vernon (Donald), Claire Ginsberg (May), Loren Schein (Roosevelt), Al Troupe (Philip), Lou Anne Webber (Dee Dee Dee), Ed Thomas (Dr. Von Der Fool)
There were two significant inventions that shaped suburbia, and the lives of regular people in general in the 1980’s Those boons to domestic life would be the video cassette recorder and the microwave oven. More often than not, they were used in conjunction with one another to create a defining social moment for me. I ate microwave popcorn for the very first time while I watched “Footloose” on our brand new Vcr. Over the next couple of years, the movies varied from comedy to horror, and Hollywood big budget all the way down to video nasties. The microwave food varied from popcorn to nachos, brownies, and TV dinners.

Village People singer-songwriter Victor Willis has finally prevailed in reclaiming 50 percent of the copyright to many of the group's songs, including "Y.M.C.A." For four years, Willis has been in a legal battle that has been closely followed in the music industry because it dealt with a portion of copyright law that allows authors to terminate copyright grants. When Congress amended copyright to permit this in the mid-1970s, it was done with an eye on giving authors 35 years hence the benefit of the latter portions of a newly extended term. Ever since, many

When Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski came across the bizarre story of Walter and Margaret Keane, they thought they’d found a seamless vehicle on which to make their directorial debut. It was cheap, and had all the requisite characteristics of their best known scripts, Ed Wood, Man On The Moon and People Vs. Larry Flynt; charming oddball characters that never rose above the zeitgeist B-list. Tim Burton, who directed Ed Wood and Big Eyes, puts it best: “It’s what they excel at, their strongest work is finding weird real stories, torn from headlines you never read.” So why should their 11-year struggle to get Big Eyes made be anything but quirky and colorful?

Every once in awhile there comes along a movie character who is just so over the top masculine that it forces every male film-goer to beat their chest rhythmically and howl at the moon. Whether they’re shooting up bad guys or beating them down with their bare fists, these characters epitomize what it means to be a manly man. After watching one of their movies you walk a little taller, you fear nothing, you perceive more women being sexually attracted to you and you feel spurts of adrenaline pumping through your veins periodically for the next few days.
Throughout popular literature, the term macho has been associated with a plethora of negative characteristics. For example, sexism, misogyny, chauvinism, hyper-masculinity and hegemonic masculinity. Scholars describe macho men as violent, uncouth, and womanizing. Is that a fair assessment? Absolutely! Nobody is claiming that these men are squeaky clean good guys,...

Billy Connolly presents the final part of his moving, yet still hilarious, ITV documentary series Big Send Off tonight (May 14).
The Big Yin is best known for his prolific stand-up comedy career over the past six decades, but he has often shown off many different strings to his bow, taking in the world of TV, film, music and charity work.
To mark Connolly's latest excellent project, Digital Spy takes a look at just some of his best moments outside his stand-up work.
1. The Humblebums
Before Billy started his stand-up career, he sang with the late Gerry Rafferty of 'Baker Street' fame in the folk group The Humblebums, along with Tam Harvey. Largely forgotten outside the folk world, they did produce some genuinely brilliant tracks, both moving and funny. Their gigs often featured Connolly chatting to the audience between songs, eventually leading to him giving the comedy thing a go full-time.

I'm sorry, were there missions Philip and Elizabeth attended to in this episode ("Behind the Red Door")? Because it was pretty damn hard to concentrate on their interrogation of Emmett and Leanne's alleged killer or his involvement in a U.S.-funded Nicaraguan-Contra training program when Elizabeth insisted on having rough sex with "Clark."
'The Americans,' A to Z
"Door" offered no shortage of plot-driving narrative, but the more important scenes tended to focus on the overriding themes of family and marriage. Martha's loose lips about Clark's "wild...

glitter attack!True story. In the late 1990s after graduating college, before New York City and The Film Experience years, I was working as an artist at a company that specialized in parties and events. Every day in a big warehouse I was a hot mess of glue guns, paint rollers, foam shavings, and glitter. Glitter above all else. Three years later in New York City I was still finding glitter in the weirdest of places; that shit lasts forever.
I thought about this as soon as the opening credits of Allan Carr and Nancy Walker's Village People origin comedy, Can't Stop the Music (1980), our "Hmwybs" April Fools Selection. It was like the movie was blowing its glitter load in the first frame. Turns out there was no refractory period. The glitter just keeps on coming and not just over animated fonts. Dancers actually Fling physical glitter at each...

We kicked off Season 5 of Hit Me With Your Best Shot with two undisputed modern classics Eternal Sunshine and La Confidential but it's time to get a little more adventurous and rangey. Each season has a mix of classics, oddities, and at least one animated entry because though we originally conceived of the series as a tribute to cinematography it's become readily apparent that the best shots can come from the work from other departments, too. To join us simply a) watch the movie b) pick your favorite shot and c) post it somewhere public. Then we'll add you to our roundup.

This Oscar season marks the 25th anniversary of the 61st Annual Academy Awards, and as you may or may not remember, the ceremony was fucking bananas. It had no host, it took place on a Wednesday, and it was produced by Allan Carr, a human pile of cocaine whose previous producing credits include the classic Village People/Bruce Jenner film Can’t Stop the Music. His career never recovered; the miracle is that he did not serve jail time. We’ll get to the particulars of what made the telecast so uniquely terrible soon. But first, stick some shoulder pads into whatever you’re wearing and travel with me to March 29, 1989, as we check out shows appearing in the Nielsen ratings the week of Oscar’s Snow White moment.No. 79: The Tracey Ullman Show It’s kind of fun to reminisce on how raw and in-your-face we all thought early Fox was,...

I seems like just a few days ago that I mentioned AMC’s rumored Preacher TV series. The project is now official, with Seth Rogen producing an adaptation of the Vertigo comic. From a gay pop culture perspective, Preacher had plenty of jokes about homophobes secretly repressing their own homosexuality. Nowadays that’s going to feel dated, I’m curious how they’ll adapt that quality.
John Benjamin Hickey will star in the Wgn America series Manhattan. Hickey will play a self-destructive physics professor who leads the Manhattan Project to develop the atom bomb.
Michael J. Fox will return to The Good Wife for the last few episodes of the season.
NPR’s Linda Holmes writes about Top Chef‘s “two kinds of fairness,” which includes one where the rules let an inferior chef avoid elimination and win. This has long been one of my major frustrations with Top Chef.

The Village People are profiled this Friday on Oprah: Where Are They Now? (Just a guess, but probably out West somewhere, full-body posing the letters Y, M, C and A.)
The folks at Own sent us over this preview clip that features original member Filipe Rose (the Indian) talking about how the group began. Turns out he was the first person to come on board. He was approached at a club where producer Jacques Morali noticed him dancing.

Fifty years ago (on Feb. 7, 1964, to be precise), the Beatles came to America with a sound so blissful and spangly and new that it would have seemed — still seems — counterintuitive to think how much that sound was influenced by America. The four magical mop tops seemed to relish our rock & roll even more than we did (though, of course, they gave it their own incandescent spin). Mind you, I’m not comparing Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, the two brilliantly funny quipster cynics who portray themselves going on a culinary road adventure in The Trip to Italy, to the Beatles...

Taking care of their to-do list, Fergie and Josh Duhamel showed up at their Brentwood house to pick up a few items on Wednesday (December 4).
The “Big Girls Don’t Cry” songstress and her “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” husband tried to avoid the shutterbugs as they carried their stuff out to their Jeep Wrangler and sped off.
Meanwhile, during the Thanksgiving weekend Josh shared a silly video of himself, his wife, their son Axl, and the family dog set to the Village People’s “Ymca.”
Along with the clip, Duhamel added the caption, "Lots to be thankful for. Have a great ‘my pants don't fit' day!!"...

This is too cute for words! Josh Duhamel shared a hilarious family photo in honor of Thanksgiving on his Twitter Thursday. The card shows his face along with Fergie, baby Axl and their pet pooch Zoe superimposed on cartoon drawings of the Village People making their famous "Ymca" dance moves. Josh is the police officer, while his little one is a muscly construction worker. Fergie was shown as the Indian chief while the tiny dachshund appeared as a pilgrim. "Lots to be thankful for. Have a great 'my pants don't fit' day!!" he wrote as a caption to the funny image. And truth be told, the new papa definitely has a lot to be grateful for this holiday...

Although the biopic about record exec Neil Bogart has had a script (penned by his son Timothy Scott Bogart) and a star (Justin Timberlake) since 2011, it’s still without a director. That may change soon, as Spike Lee is reportedy in early talks to helm Spinning Gold. The Hollywood Reporter writes that the project “aims to tell the rags-to-riches story of a poor kid from Brooklyn who defined pop music before his death from cancer in 1982 at age 39.” Bogart is credited with discovering such greats as Bill Withers, Gladys Knight, Kiss, Donna Summer, and the Village People, among others. The film is expected to start shooting in 2014 and RCA Records plans to release an accompanying soundtrack, which will undoubtedly feature some new Jt tracks.

This week, Nolan has his housewarming, and we learn Aidan‘s game plan.
Here are five highlights:
“Procedamus in pace, In nomine Christi, Amen”
Father Paul tells the Head Holy Guy he knows he was framed, but doesn’t know why God is punishing him. Luckily, Emily does, and when he slips into the confessional, she’s waiting for him. (So … was she just sitting there for hours hoping he would stop by, playing Candy Crush and listening to other confessions?) Anyway, as the boys from Enigma crank up their latest Euro dance hit in the background, she tells him she was besties with Amanda, knows exactly what he did to David Clarke, and she was the one responsible for framing him.
She offers him a deal: She’ll make sure his name is cleared so he can keep helping happy poor kids and their stuffed...

I actually became depressed at the thought of picking Julianne Moore‘s best movie. She’s not like Jane Fonda or Glenn Close (two of my favorite movie stars, to be clear), the fierce, lupine types who seem to take roles based on how much they can represent their signature intensity. In the case of Jane and Glenn, you basically have to pick their “fiercest” roles as favorites: for Jane, They Shoot Horses, Don’t They or Klute; for Glenn, Damages or Dangerous Liaisons. With Julianne Moore, who stars in the upcoming Carrie remake, it’s possible to forget that she was both Annette Bening‘s conflicted wife in The Kids Are All Right and the mother from Savage Grace. She’s so fundamentally different from role to role that grading them against one another feels (sigh) impossible.
But as you know, our Best Movie Ever? feature is not about pandering to critical taste.
