Michael Cera is recalling his time with Rihanna on the set of This Is the End and remembering the slap the singer gave him in the film which turned out to be real.
“I thought it would look a lot better if she hit me. I don’t think it took much convincing to get her to do it,” Cera told Rolling Stone in a recent interview. “I just thought it would look a lot better than a fake slap would because you can really feel it. It just looks a lot funnier!”
The Arrested Development alum said that the slap ended up being the cut they used for the actual film.
“I definitely did not regret it! I was into it,” he added. “The take that is in the movie, she really did hit my ear, which was disorienting. But I have no regrets. I didn’t lose any hearing over it,...

‘Pimped’
David Barker’s psychological thriller Pimped, which explores what might happen if two men lured a woman who proved to be stronger, smarter and more cunning than them, won the Australian feature award at Monster Fest: The Homecoming.
Staged at Cinema Nova from November 22-25, the seventh edition of Monster Fest drew nearly 2,900 patrons, a record for the event.
The Golden Monster award for best feature went to director Jonas Åkerlund’s Lords of Chaos, which is set in Oslo in 1987 and stars Rory Culkin as a teenager who forms the aptly-titled black metal band Mayhem with his equally fanatical mates. They begin burning down churches throughout the countryside and stealing tombstones for their record store, leading to violence. It has yet to find a local distributor.

"She's different from the others." Gravitas has debuted an official trailer for an intriguing indie sci-fi film titled At First Light, originally just First Light. The film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival, the second feature made by filmmaker Jason Stone. At First Light is about a young woman named Alex Lainey, played by newcomer Stefanie Scott, who has a close encounter with mysterious orbs of light that leave her with extraordinary powers. As they flee from their families, the police, and a government agency, Alex and her friend Sean find themselves at the center of an unprecedented event in human history. The cast includes Théodore Pellerin, Kristin Booth, Kate Burton, and Josh Cruddas. This actually looks pretty damn cool. Even though we've seen plenty of superpowers movies recently, I'm a bit more curious about this one. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jason Stone's At First Light, direct...

Hey, fellow Riverdale fans. We're sure that most of you guys were wondering where in the hell was the new episode 18 last night? Unfortunately, it turned out to be a rerun of episode 13 which of course already aired earlier this season. Yeah, for some reason, the next, new episode 18 has been delayed for quite some time, but not extremely long. It's not going to air next Wednesday night either. It's currently scheduled to hit the airwaves on Wednesday night, April 18, 2018 in it's usual 7 pm central time slot. So, be sure to mark that important date down on your TV calendars. What is The CW airing instead of Riverdale next week? According to the TV Guide listings, they will be airing a special Harry Potter show. It's titled, "Harry Potter: A History of Magic." It will apparently take up most of the primetime duration with a runtime of an hour and a half.

While 2016 award-winner Arrival may have gotten more people thinking about the implications of human-extraterrestrial contact, it’s probably safe to say that the topic isn’t high on the list of the usual teenage concerns. So when two young people are forced to confront an alien arrival in First Light, it’s not surprising if they’re ill-equipped to deal with the experience.
Positing first contact with time- and space-traveling entities as the ultimate coming of age moment, writer-director Jason Stone reaches for grand analogies that manage to both overstate the profundity of typical adolescent experience and minimize the significance of civilizational shift...

We follow Detective Inspector Hazel Micallef (played by Susan Sarandon) who stumbles upon a gruesome murder that shatters her peaceful existence and leads her to unearth a series of similar killings across the country. The directorial debut of Jason Stone (best known for being co-writer on inspiration for This is the End, short movie Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse) The Calling sees Hazel Micallef (Susan Sarandon), a police detective in the small Canadian town of Fort Dundas, investigating the brutal murder of one of the towns inhabitants. When one body leads to another and another, Micallef and her team, including new recruit Ben (Topher Grace), come to realize the religious fanatic (Christopher Heyerdhal) behind the murders is only just beginning. A totally engaging police prcedural, The Calling makes great use of the gloomy Canadian wilderness, all dense forests and barren, snow covered fields , to instill a nice sense of dread into proceedings. It hits the ground running, with the first act more concerned with personal lives of Micallef and those who surround her. It does a great job of building up the characters,...

New Director Jason Stone brings to life a psychological crime thriller – highlighted by an All-star cast – with his new film – The Calling.
Hazel Micallef (Susan Sarandon) plays a seasoned cop in the quaint little town of Fort Dundas, which hasn’t seen too much excitement in years. When she decides to check on a neighbor and good friend of her mother Emily (Ellen Burstyn), Micallef happens upon a gruesome crime scene.
Micallef needs help to solve this type of murder, so she reaches out to Detective Ray Green (Gil Bellows), who doesn’t seem to want to come to her aid, now or ever. When a younger cop named Ben Wingate (Topher Grace) decides to transfer to their precinct, he might just be the help she needs to find who committed this heinous crime!
Well it looks like we might just have a serial killer on our hands,...

Canadian culture has long been a topic of discussion among intellectuals simply because there are those who argue that it doesn’t really exist. Obviously there is a culture that those of us living in Canada experience, but it is difficult to ascribe a distinct Canadian nature to that culture since so much of it is almost directly adopted from our neighbors to the south.
There is one piece though, that does differ significantly between Canadians and Americans, religion. It doesn’t really matter what faith one practices in Canada, it is generally a very private thing. Popular culture is almost universally secular with the exception of the occasional political discussion. But even then, the rhetoric in discussions around abortion, same gender marriage, and physician assisted suicide never reach the same heights that they do in the Us.

Busy Signals: Stone’s Aptly Named Thriller Phones It In
There is not anything innately offensive about a really decent made-for-tv thriller, especially the type based on those ceaseless examples of books once referred to as dime store pulp fiction, juicy, hard boiled or even illogical. These types of mildly entertaining whodunits aren’t without a certain sense of craftsmanship either. But half their charm is that they’re on television, so they may seem a bit irritating if you had to pay to see them in the theater—and that’s concerning the really decent ones. It’s hard to say why writer/producer Jason Stone chose to adapt The Calling, the first in a series of mystery novels by Michael Redhill, published under the pseudonym of Inger Ash Wolfe. Adapted by screenwriter Scott Abramovitch, who has only written films for television previously, it’s a lukewarm endeavor a...

While summer 2014 has been typically top heavy with tentpoles, the pickings have been a little more slim for filmgoers in the market for grittier fare. However, if you've been looking for a serial killer potboiler, "The Calling" is right up your street. Starring Susan Sarandon, Topher Grace, Donald Sutherland and Ellen Burstyn, the Jason Stone ("Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse") directed movie follows a smalltown detective whose investigation of a string of murders suggest a killer answering to a higher power. In this exclusive clip, you'll see the film's police putting a series of highly unappealing pieces together. Currently available on VOD, you can catch "The Calling" on the big screen in limited release starting on August 29th. Check out the clip below, as well as the full trailer for the film.

In the movie, Seth Rogen gets to play a ‘deranged’ version of himself alongside numerous of his real-life and on-screen friends who equally play silly versions of their own selves. Just some of those actors include Jonah Hill, James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Aziz Ansari, Craig Robinson, Jason Segel, Emma Watson, Michael Cera, Paul Rudd, Kevin Hart, Rihanna and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

The latest effort from the Evan Goldberg stable is also the first directed by the prolific writer-producer, in tandem with star Seth Rogen, who also breaks his helming virginity in this riotously funny, postmodern apocalyptic comedy about celebrities being faced with the end of times.
It’s a doozy of a high concept – based on Jay and Seth versus the Apocalypse, a short film created by Jason Stone and Goldberg in 2007 – in which a gang of Hollywood’s most famous comic actors stare down the end of the world while partying at James Franco’s house.

It’s a doozy of a high concept – based on Jay and Seth versus the Apocalypse, a short film created by Jason Stone and Goldberg in 2007 – in which a gang of Hollywood’s most famous comic actors stare down the end of the world while partying at James Franco’s house.

Would you want to die at James Franco's house? It's a central conceit of the directorial debut of Superbad writer Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, a ramshackle, indulgent, but supremely funny apocalypse comedy in cinemas this Friday.
Loosely based on Jay and Seth versus the Apocalypse, a 2007 short created by Jason Stone and Goldberg, it's probably the best comedy of the year, if only by default. Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa isn't in cinemas yet and Monsters University, while undoubtedly hilarious, is transcending its genre, rather than excelling within it.
This Is The End's ambitions are far smaller than taking a beloved TV character to the big screen, or marketing a college comedy towards the under-12s; all Rogen and Goldberg are interested in creating is a diverting 100-minute comedy with some surprises and a lot of laughs. And even when the film lurches into smug excess, or the...

Thursday Noon Update: You wouldn’t think that imagining a bunch of stoned and drunk celebrities at James Franco’s house would amount to much as a film. Then again, it’s from the Superbad/Pineapple Express crew. So Sony/Columbia Pictures’ raunchy apocalyptic comedy This Is The End received a ‘B+’ CinemaScore from audiences and 82% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and a #1 reception Wednesday night. With a dearth of both ‘R’-rated movies or well-received laughers in the marketplace, pic made $7.8M Wednesday from 3,055 theaters after a stronger-than-expected late shows around the country. That number includes $2.2M from Tuesday late and midnight screenings. Sony’s latest projections are for the film to take at least mid-$30sM or higher over the next 5 days - or about the same dollar figure as its $32M negative cost. This Is The End was marketed squarely at a young adult male audience and...

Los Angeles — The seemingly exhausted gross-out comedy genre gets a strange temporary reprieve with "This Is the End," an unlikable but weirdly compelling apocalyptic fantasy in which a bunch of young stars and stars-by-affiliation jokingly imagine their own mortality. A sort-of "The Day of the Locust" centered on successful comic actors, rather than down-and-outers, facing a conflagration in Los Angeles, this is a dark farce that's simultaneously self-deprecating, self-serving, an occasion to vent about both friends and rivals and to fret about self-worth in a cocooned environment. With everyone here officially playing themselves, the result is like a giant home movie and a reality horror show, different enough from anything that's come before to score with young audiences.
With the "Hangover" series outliving its welcome, Judd Apatow moving on to quasi-serious stuff and Johnny-come-latelies like "21 & Over" and "Movie 43" falling short, outrageous comedies aren't what they used to be a few years back.

It's the end of the world as we know it, and at what more fitting location than a drug-and-booze-filled housewarming at James Franco's fortress in the Hollywood Hills would the damned be found? Based on their original short film, Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse, writers Jason Stone, Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen expand on how Rogen and pal Jay Baruchel -- playing characters named Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel -- come to terms with one another during the Apocalypse in the bromantic comedy, This Is the End. Only this time, they are holed up and trying to survive on the last Milky Way and crackers with James Franco, Jonah Hill and Craig Robinson, while also dealing with the likes of Danny McBride and Emma Stone (all also playing "themselves").

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have been behind some huge summer comedies in the past, but with "This Is The End," the longtime writing partners are behind the camera for the first time, making their directorial debut. And to ease the transition, Rogen and Goldberg enlisted the help of some of their famous friends like James Franco and Jonah Hill to play fictionalized versions of themselves in the apocalyptic comedy. As you might have guessed, this essentially translates to cracking dick jokes and ragging on each other's movies while waiting out the end of the world. Because even after all Hell breaks loose, it's never too late to make fun of "The Green Hornet."
Inspired by a short film Rogen and Goldberg helped make back in 2007 ("Jay and Seth Versus The Apocalypse"), "This Is The End" is a disaster movie for the "Superbad" set, which means it's as foul-mouthed and...

Proving once again that there’s nothing he won’t try, comic actor Seth Rogen adds another showbiz title to his IMDb chart by joining his friend and writing partner Evan Goldberg behind the camera for This Is the End, a laugh out loud, Hollywood-inside-Hollywood comedy based on his 2007 cult short Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse. Rogen and comic pal and actor Jay Baruchel once again play themselves trapped in Los Angeles while the Biblical end of days unfolds around them. With additional storytelling tweaks by Jason Stone, Goldberg and Rogen, the story shifts to pal James Franco’s modern L.A. house with other members of Rogen’s comedy posse including Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Michael Cera and Craig Robinson joining the fire-and-brimstone adventure.

This Is The End is yet another collaboration between writer Evan Goldberg and actor Seth Rogen, two childhood friends who first worked together on Sacha Baron Cohen’s Da Ali G Show. Since then, the duo has been responsible for films like Superbad, Pineapple Express and The Green Hornet. Now, Goldberg and Rogen are taking on roles that are completely new to them as they step behind the camera for This Is The End. Of course, they also both have writing credits on the film and Rogen also stars.
Playing himself (as does everyone in the film), This Is The End sees Rogen attending a star-studded party at his buddy James Franco’s house when the skies open up and suddenly, a global apocalypse ensues. Along with Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Danny McBride and a few others, Seth finds himself facing the end of the world,...
