Stars: Christopher Abbott, Andrea Riseborough, Rossif Sutherland, Tuppence Middleton, Sean Bean, Jennifer Jason Leigh | Written and Directed by Brandon Cronenberg
Writer-director Brandon Cronenberg proves a proper chip off the old block with his second feature, Possessor, a brilliantly directed and startlingly original sci-fi horror that’s worthy of instant classic status. In fact, it’s fully deserving of a place alongside his father’s very best films, it’s that good.
Opening with an immediately unsettling stabbing sequence, the film centres on Tasya Vos (Andrea Riseborough), a seasoned assassin who’s able to “possess” unsuspecting strangers and use their bodies to commit murder-for-hire, thanks to brain-implant technology developed by her employers. However, repeated exposure to the procedure has taken a cumulative psychological toll on Vos and she’s beginning to have trouble separating her own psyche from that of her unsuspecting hosts after a job.

Fans of Brandon Cronenberg’s Possessor will be delighted by this new release from Second Sight films which contains some four hours of additional viewing material, most of it sufficiently visually and intellectually dense that you’ll want to explore it a bit at a time. It begins with an audio commentary featuring Cronenberg himself alongside supervising producer Rob Cotterill, producer Karim Hussain and special effects artist Dan Martin. The four talk easily and enthusiastically, delivering lots of interesting inside information. Despite this, one gets the sense that they’re only just scratching the surface of what they could say, but that’s okay, because they’re given plenty of other opportunities.
There are lengthy new interviews here with Cronenberg, Hussain and Cotterill, the former presented with layered images from the film which nicely suit the film, but with music which gets tedious and a little intrusive; the latter comfortably ensconced in his living room,...

When we saw the teaser trailer for Hobo with a Shotgun (watch it Here) director Jason Eisener’s new film Kids vs. Aliens back in September, it was said that Rlje Films would be giving the movie a theatrical, VOD, and digital release sometime in early 2023. Now we know exactly when that release is going to happen: January 20th! Kids vs. Aliens will then be moving to the Shudder streaming service sometime later in the year.
Written by Eisener and his Hobo with a Shotgun collaborator John Davies, Kids vs. Aliens has the following synopsis:

Four weeks ago, we heard that Infinity Pool, a new sci-fi thriller from director Brandon Cronenberg, the son of the legendary David Cronenberg, had been slapped with an Nc-17 by the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association. The reason given for that rating was “some graphic violence and sexual content”. The ratings announcement came with the note that the makers of Infinity Pool intend to appealed to the Classification and Rating Administration appeals board in an attempt to get the Nc-17 turned into an R. And apparently that appeal didn’t go their way, because it has now been announced that Infinity Pool was edited in order to receive an R rating.
The new rating announcement says that Infinity Pool was been rated R for “graphic violence, disturbing material, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and some language.” Which makes it sound even harsher than the Nc-17 cut.

As we told you last month, Antiviral and Possessor director Brandon Cronenberg‘s next is the sci-fi movie Infinity Pool for Neon and Topic Studios, which received an “Nc-17” rating from the MPA for “Some graphic violence and sexual content.” We also told you that an appeal was underway, and this week the MPA has finally handed the film an “R” rating.
The film’s previous “Nc-17” rating has been voided and the film has been re-edited a bit to achieve the “R” rating. This edited version of Infinity Pool has been rated “R” for…
“Graphic violence, disturbing material, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use, and some language.”
The good news? It sounds like the film will remain violent and boundary-pushing!
Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

Over a year has gone by since we heard that Alexander Skarsgard (Godzilla vs. Kong) would be starring in Infinity Pool, a new sci-fi thriller from director Brandon Cronenberg, the son of the legendary David Cronenberg. Infinity Pool, which also stars Mia Goth – who Ti West is working on turning into a genre icon with his X, Pearl, and MaXXXine trilogy – has since made its way through production, and was recently screened for the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association. And that screening didn’t go the way Cronenberg and distributor Neon were hoping it would. The ratings board has slapped Infinity Pool with an Nc-17 rating for “some graphic violence and sexual content”.
The ratings announcement on FilmRatings.com comes with the note that the makers of Infinity Pool intend to appeal to the Classification and Rating Administration appeals board in an attempt to get the Nc-17 turned into an R.

Up next from Antiviral and Possessor director Brandon Cronenberg is the sci-fi movie Infinity Pool for Neon and Topic Studios, which boasts a cast including Mia Goth (Pearl) and Alexander Skarsgård (The Northman). This week we’ve learned that the upcoming movie has received an “Nc-17” rating from the MPA, with an appeal currently underway.
For now, Infinity Pool has been rated “Nc-17” for…
“Some graphic violence and sexual content.”
We’re hearing that Neon is intending on appealing to the C.A.R.A. Appeals Board, so we’ll keep you posted as we learn more. Either way, this one is very much on our radar at the moment!
The press release explained, “Alexander Skarsgård will star in Brandon Cronenberg’s Infinity Pool. Skarsgård will further serve as executive producer.”
In the film, “James and Em are young, rich, in love, and on vacation. Their all-inclusive resort boasts island tours and gleaming beaches.

Eleven years have passed since director Jason Eisener brought us Hobo with a Shotgun (watch it Here), and while we have had other pieces of Eisener entertainment to watch since then – he contributed segments to the anthologies The ABCs of Death and V/H/S/2, and also directed the series The Dark Side of the Ring – we haven’t gotten another Eisener feature film. Until now. Eisener’s new film Kids vs. Aliens is set to premiere at Fantastic Fest later this month, and it has also secured distribution beyond that. Variety reports that Rlje Films will be giving Kids vs. Aliens a theatrical, VOD, and digital release sometime in early 2023. Then the movie will receive a streaming release through Shudder.

Alexander Skarsgård will star in Brandon Cronenberg’s “Infinity Pool,” a sci-fi thriller about a vacation that takes a twist.
Neon, the studio behind “Parasite,” will co-finance and executive produce the film alongside Topic Studios, which previously produced “Leave No Trace” and “Luce.” “Infinity Pool” comes on the heels of Skarsgård’s star turn in “Godzilla vs. Kong,” one of the few box office success stories of the pandemic era. Cronenberg recently directed the trippy horror film, “Possessor,” which Neon released.
Here’s the official logline for “Infinity Pool”: “James and Em are young, rich, in love, and on vacation. Their all-inclusive resort boasts island tours and gleaming beaches. But outside of the hotel gates waits something much more dangerous and seductive, beyond the edge of paradise.” Given Cronenberg’s out-there oeuvre, that “something” probably doesn’t involve lost travelers checks or a failure to apply sufficient sunscreen.

Possessor is the name of the new film from Brandon Cronenberg, who made his feature debut in 2012 with Antiviral. Like that film, Possessor is an unnerving hybrid of sci-fi and horror about the invasion of one’s body by something transplanted from another human being. But while Antiviral focused on a bizarre fan culture in which people injected pathogens harvested from their favorite celebrities, Possessor deals with the ramifications of one person actually taking over the mind of another and controlling all their actions and thoughts.
The movie stars Andrea Riseborough (Mandy) as Tasya Vos, who works for a clandestine company that uses brain implant technology to take over the bodies of others and have them commit assassinations for the benefit of the company and its clients. Sent by her superior (Jennifer Jason Leigh) on her most dangerous mission yet, Vos begins to suffer long-term effects from the process that...

Paris-based Celluloid Dreams has boarded Brandon Cronenberg’s upcoming drama Infinity Pool, about an all-inclusive holiday in an exotic luxury resort that takes a sinister turn, both as a co-production partner and as its international sales agent
Based on an original screenplay written by Cronenberg, the son of the acclaimed director David Cronenberg, Infinity Pool centres on uninspired writer and his wife who are befriended by a glamorous couple, while on an all-inclusive vacation on a picturesque island. [Happy Monday, readers! With the 2017 Sundance Film Festival beginning later this week, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at some of the great midnight movies that have come out of the fest over the years. Be sure to check back each day this week for more Midnight Memories from Daily Dead!]
The Sundance Film Festival has hosted the premieres of many a great genre offering; from Lucky McKee’s May in 2002 to Tommy Wirkola’s Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead in 2014, the festival spotlights genre work by turns impactful, thoughtful, or just delightful. And many of the films’ backstories are often as inspired as the work itself. Case in point: Jason Eisener’s Hobo with a Shotgun, which premiered January 21st, 2011 at Sundance, and is still as fun to watch as its journey to the screen is fascinating.
Back in 2007, when Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino were set to release Grindhouse (their double feature love letter to exploitation cinema), they announced a contest for fake exploitation trailers to go along with ones already filmed by established filmmakers such as Edgar Wright and Rob Zombie.

I admit it, I’m a sentimental old fart. I get choked up and maudlin very often, when I think of family and friends, a moment in time when I realized the tragedy life can bring to us, or the joy. I tear up at the movies regularly, or reading certain passages in books. But I never thought I would weep at the loss of a video system. If you read We Are Movie Geeks regularly you must be aware of the video revolution of the 1980s, when VHS players and recorders found a place in almost every home in America. I hope you recall the early days when VHS was neck and neck with Betamax, a technically better system. Remember the days of Mom and Pop video rental stores when almost anyone could open a store front, and with a collection of VHS tapes start making money? As one of the many,...

When Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez get together, mischief always ensues. I’ve confirmed that although Tarantino hasn’t started shooting the ensemble Western The Hateful Eight, he has managed to shoot a teaser trailer that will precede his pal Rodriguez’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. Tarantino confirmed during an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con that he would go ahead with his Western, which he revealed to Deadline in January he would scrap because the agents of one of a handful of actors he gave the script to had leaked it. It created a drama that included a lawsuit, a killer live reading staged for charity, and then finally a deal with The Weinstein Company to giddyap in early 2015 start for the movie that will star Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, Kurt Russell and others.
