Elodie Polo-Ackermann, who runs the Mediawan-owned Paris-based banner Imagissime, has become one of Europe’s key documentary producers since delivering “Who Killed Little Gregory?,” a different kind of true crime series which marked Netflix’s first documentary original in France.
“Who Killed Little Gregory?” was directed by Gilles Marchand, a critically acclaimed screenwriter and director whose credits include the Cannes title “Who Killed Bambi?” and “L’autre monde.” With his cinematic approach to the genre, Marchand was able to cast a new light on the infamous cold case revolving around the mysterious murder of 4-year old Grégory Villemin in 1984. The company recently launched its second Netflix docu, “The Women and the Murderer,” a female take on the 1990s serial killer Guy Georges, co-written and co-directed by Mona Achache (“The Hedgehog”) and Patricia Tourancheau.

The Toronto International Film Festival’s prominence on the festival circuit has only grown over the years, with films from numerous different fields having gone on to critical and commercial acclaim. Among the festival’s different categories are Tiff Docs and Vanguard. Tiff Docs allows documentaries to get their own spotlight at the festival, giving acclaimed documentarians such as Michael Moore and Frederick Wiseman a platform for their films. The Vanguard section, on the other hand, showcases films that aren’t easily categorisable into a specific genre. With the Canadian Films lineup announcement having revealed the first set of films playing in each group, Tiff today revealed more of the lineup in each section. The list of newly announced films, with their official synopses, is as follows.
Tiff Docs
Amazing Grace, directed by Sydney Pollack, making its International Premiere

Chicago – Not all movies are similar in what they demand of the viewer. Obviously, a light mainstream romantic comedy requires a different level of commitment than a French period piece, but even art movies have varying degrees of viewer requirements. Even within the Criterion Collections, there are shorter, easier films and then there are releases like “Carlos,” a stellar epic that runs close to six hours and is accompanied by extensive, elaborate special features. This is the kind of release you’ll need to set aside more than just a day to appreciate. And it’s good enough that you may even want to watch it twice. Better set aside a week.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
“Carlos” is, in some estimations, the best modern film about terrorism. There have been several epic examinations of influential madmen recently, including the acclaimed “Mesrine,” but few have had the instant impact of “Carlos.” With a...

The first poster for Olivier Assayas‘ epic biopic Carlos, which will premiere in its full five-and-a-half-hour cut at Cannes Fest, about famed terrorist Carlos The Jackal has finally landed and we must admit that it really looks great. Take a look also at several Hi-Res photos from the movie below.
Edgar Ramirez as Carlos
As we already wrote this is a three-part TV drama and that’s the reason why this movie isn’t In Competition, but we’re sure that this story about Venezuelan revolutionary, Ilich Ramirez Sanchez is more than interesting.
If you are lucky to be at Cannes right now, you can watch the premiere on Wednesday (May 19) at 12 Am, local time.
Based on an original idea by Daniel Leconte, written by Olivier Assayas and Dan Franck, directed by Assayas, Carlos tells the story of Ilich Ramírez Sánchez who, for two decades, was one of the most wanted terrorists on the planet.

No one from Hollywood has managed to get the elusive Carlos jus right, I think might get him right. I'm glad this is going to Assayas -- whose picture-perfect and poignant Summer Hours has officially converted me into a fan of his once again. - #11. Full of violence and secret-service manipulation, the story includes the 1974 bomb attack on the Publicis Drugstore in Paris, the 1975 hostage-taking of 11 Opec ministers in Vienna and several planned assassinations. All this unfolds against a geopolitical backdrop encompassing the Plo, Japanese Red Army, Iraq under Saddam Hussein, the Ussr, East German Stasi, Hungary, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen and, finally, Sudan where Carlos was arrested.....(more) Cast: Édgar Ramírez,...

Terrorist Carlos the Jackal is coming to the Sundance Channel and then to U.S. theaters via IFC Films.
The Sundance Channel will air the three-part French miniseries "Carlos," directed by Olivier Assayas, in the spring.
Under a deal struck at the Amrican Film Market, IFC Films will then distribute a shortened version of the miniseries in the fall, both in theaters and as a simultaneous VOD offering.
The film stars Edgar Ramirez, of "Che" and "Domino," as Illich Ramirez Sanchez, who was known as Carlos the Jackal, the mastermind behind a wave of assassinations and terrorist attacks that swept Europe and the Middle East in the '70s and '80s. The film, which was shot in Austria, France, Germany, Hungary and Morocco with an international cast, was produced by Studio Canal and Film En Stock's Daniel Leconte and Jens Meuer in association with Sundance Channel.

Cannes Film FestivalAfter watching this spirited, nearly two-hour documentary, you may rethink your assumptions and conclusions about the infamous Danish cartoons, published a few years back, that were accused of being insensitive toward Islam and "pouring oil on the fire." Noted French documentarian Daniel Leconte follows the exciting trial of the long-lived leftist satirical rag, "Charlie Hebdo", when it chose to reprint the offending cartoons. Unlike the Anglo-American documentary tradition of maintaining at least the pretense of objectivity, filmmaker Leconte's attitudes are easy to read, especially when he argues vociferously with some of his talking heads, especially lawyers, who had the nerve to defend the other side. All the great players in contemporary French society make an appearance, from the eloquent philosopher Elisabeth Badinter to the socialist politician Francois Hollande. Even Nicolas Sarkozy, the current French center-right president and frequent target of Charlie's scorn, sends a supportive fax which is read out loud in the courtroom. The film is enormously self-important, like the truculent music track that accompanies it, but by the end you'll be cheering for Charlie and for its crucial defense of freedom of speech, no matter what your politics are. Great festival and television fare, though a theatrical run seems doubtful.

- Surprise, surprise! Last week’s misleading speculations of titles pulling out and the odd closer for the 61st edition of the Cannes film festival were indeed debunked. Soderbergh's pair of Che films (The Argentine and Guerrilla) come as a possible four-hour epic (hopefully with at least one pee break), Woody Allen takes another out of comp slot with Vicky Cristina Barcelona and so far, there are no opening or closing titles announced. Unlike last year’s edition, this is a loaded with world preems year with the exception being Marina Zenovich's Roman Polanski docu. Films that were to be expected were confirmed, Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s comes with a differently titled film that will take some getting used to from the former "Daydreams" to Three Monkeys, Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York was a shoe-in since it was first introduced at last year’s Cannes, native Arnaud Desplechin
