In celebration of the newly distributed home release of the action crime film, ‘Need For Speed,’ the drama’s production company, DreamWorks, has unveiled clips from the movie. The videos showcase some of the most intense and electrifying scenes from the film. + ‘Need For Speed’ is the second directorial effort from Scott Waugh, who previously helmed ‘Act of Valor.’ The 3D film, which is based on the Electronic Arts racing video game franchise, was written by George Gatins. DreamWorks has released the following synopsis for ‘Need For Speed’: ‘Need For Speed’ follows Tobey, a blue-collar mechanic who races muscle cars on the side in an unsanctioned street-racing circuit. I approached Need for Speed with all the enthusiasm you might expect of a recent Breaking Bad convert who, having binged his way through the whole series, is desperate for another fix. Given his character’s denouement in the show, it’s perhaps rather fitting that Aaron Paul’s new project is a film about people driving very fast cars.
Paul plays Tobey, a mechanic who also enjoys illegal street racing (but then who doesn’t?). After one such illegal street race with a rival – Dominic Cooper’s slimy Dino – goes bad, Tobey is wrongly sent to the big house. Well, he was driving an illegal car at illegal speeds, putting himself and others in danger, but he...

Chicago – In interviews to promote the movie, Aaron Paul has said that he was chosen by Steven Spielberg himself to be the lead in this high-speed action thriller, while the executive producer was binge-watching “Breaking Bad”. Those are certainly some undeniable cool points that I can’t blame him for mentioning, regardless of how the movie is received.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
It’s an understandable decision, even if it was based solely on Paul’s formidable work on the award-winning AMC series. He may be a solid choice to play an expert street racer, but Spielberg and the other bigwigs at DreamWorks should’ve been more selective with who they chose for screenwriting duties. If the studio was attempting their own shot at a “Fast and Furious” franchise, they could’ve at least brought in a co-writer to help out with characterization and dialogue. But, considering this a movie based on over...

On the Road Again: Waugh’s Woeful Film an Offending Lemon
Leaving behind the galvanizing propaganda of his Navy SEALs plugged film debut, Act of Valor, director Scott Waugh turns to the EA video games inspired action effort, Need for Speed, featuring poster art that promises the vacuous action frenzy that those disappointed in the art-house beauty of Drive were so monotonously seeking. Moviegoers intent on getting their chuckles from glossy actions sequences, like elaborate car chases and shit blowing up everywhere, may find some solace in this charade, but even those high octane thrills feel comparatively lackluster (one has to laugh at the homage to Bullitt, which is shown playing at a drive-thru in the lengthy set-up, a classic that features one of the best car chase sequences ever put to film, of which this film can’t compare).

New Need For Speed movie received mostly bad reviews from major critics. DreamWorks Pictures released their new action flick, "Need For Speed" into theaters this weekend, and the top movie critics have submitted their reviews. Unfortunately, for the film, it seems that most of the reviews doesn't fall in its favor, getting an overall 38 score out of a 100 across 27 reviews at Metacritic.com. We posted a few snippets from some of the critics (below). The movie stars: Aaron Paul, Imogen Poots, Dominic Cooper, Ramon Rodriguez, Rami Malek, Harrison Gilbertson, Scott 'Kid Cudi' Mescudi, Michael Keaton, and Dakota Johnson. Bill Zwecker at the Chicago Sun-Times, gave it a 63 score, stating, "The best parts of Need for Speed are the actual racing and chasing sequences — a true thrill ride for the audience as the story unfolds." Michael Phillips at the Chicago Tribune, gave it another 63. He stated: "When the actors are in cars,...

Need for Speed
Written by George Gatins and John Gatins
Directed by Scott Waugh
USA, 2014
EA’s long-running Need for Speed series of car-racing games never seemed like a particularly easy franchise to adapt. While other video game movies at least have some logic behind them, an interesting visual hook, or unique scenario that could lend itself well to the blockbuster-movie mold, the Need for Speed series is less of an obvious choice, as high-octane car racing movies are nothing new to screens, especially now that The Fast and The Furious unleashes a new installment on a bi-yearly basis.
What, then, does Need for Speed, Disney’s adaptation of the series, have to offer that its competitors don’t? The answer, unfortunately, is very little, as Need for Speed does little to distinguish itself, offering entertaining car chases and stunts and nothing more.

Need for Speed
Written by George Gatins
Directed by Scott Waugh
USA, 2014
The new film Need for Speed does not deserve its lead actor, as he proves in a number of the dramatic moments. Even those audience members not familiar with Aaron Paul’s outstanding work on the AMC drama Breaking Bad would likely notice the straining-at-the-seams emotional style he brings to his character here, which is somewhat unexpected in a movie that essentially wants to kickstart its own The Fast and the Furious-esque franchise. Those movies, like Need for Speed, boast plenty of pedal-to-the-metal street racing, outrageous stunts, beautiful women, more racing, more stunts, and so on. Need for Speed, however, tries too hard to be a real, grounded story of revenge and hate, too often tippling over into melodrama.

Subtle this petrolhead festival confection isn't – but the entertainment rev counter more or less keeps going
It's crass. It's vulgar. It's based on a video game – of all the culturally reprehensible things! There is, moreover, no question of cast-members Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper and Imogen Poots taking to the Oscar stage next March to sob over the "journey" that took them there.
But Need for Speed is enjoyable in its highly implausible way: a petrolhead festival with some outrageously silly stunts. Screenwriter George Gatins and director Scott Waugh award themselves a bit of an ancestor-worship moment with a clip from Steve McQueen in Bullitt, but basically they seem to be remembering Monte Hellman's Two-Lane Blacktop, along with quite a few of the old-style freeway chase/airborne-car extravaganzas such as Smokey and the Bandit. It's about blue-collar driver-mechanic Tobey Marshall (Paul) who's in a race for his life against the...

"Need For Speed" is several different movies at once, and most of them are very stupid. There is a rumor that George Gatins wrote the script for this film, but I find that hard to believe after sitting through the film. Sure, there are some people and there are some things that happen to them, but the only real reason the studio gave director Scott Waugh cameras was so he could film some admittedly amazing car stunt sequences. Waugh earns his action credibility honestly. He comes from a family of stunt performers, and he's been doing stunts in film since the early '90s himself. When he says that he wanted to make an ode to the great stunt driving movies like "Bullitt" or "The Blues Brothers" or "Smokey and the Bandit," I take him at his word. There are some very well-shot and well-staged car scenes in the film,...

Need for Speed is junk. You're going to read reviews telling you how great the racing scenes are, because there are some genuinely exciting sequences featuring cars going fast. Great, what else do you have for mec Forget logic, this film doesn't even have its own internal logic, which is paramount for a feature where people sign up for a race where the winner wins his competitors' multi-million dollar cars, but what good is the prize if they are all in ruin by the checkered flagc A ragged plot, thin characters, a villain (Dominic Cooper) that may as well be a Hanna Barbera character and Michael Keaton explaining every aspect of the plot... To whomc From wherec Who is this guy and how does any of this make sensec "I'm not looking for logic!" you say. "I'm looking for cars going vroom, vroom and cop cars going whew, whew!" Well,...

It’s a Fast & Furious ripoff! No, wait, it’s based on a popular videogame!
Which one makes Need for Speed sound more junky and more calculated to trick audiences into parting with their hard-earned cash? Cuz: that one.
And if throwing away 2D dollars on this doesn’t thrill you enough, know that the 3D version was created in postproduction– which never, never looks good — as an extra bonus cash grab. If you want to feel like you’re driving a car in 3D, you could just go drive a car.

The Need For Speed video game series has been around for almost 20 years now and has since sold over 140 million copies worldwide. It’s pretty obvious why people love playing these games: you get to drive expensive cars at ridiculously high speeds. The game is a pure adrenaline rush for teens and young adults alike.
Because the game’s premise is so simple, however, constructing a feature-length film based on Need For Speed presents a bit of a challenge. Sure, it’s fun to play the game by yourself or with friends, but how do you get people to care about fictional characters, whose lives revolve entirely around illegal street races, without copying the Fast and Furious movies? How do you capture the pure thrill and excitement that the game experience has to offer?

Need for Speed straddles the line between a fun, full-throttled ode to reckless car classics and a relentlessly cheesy redemption tale that has all the nuance and intelligence of the video game it is adapted from. It also marks the first leading big-screen turn for Aaron Paul – unless you count his terrific work in the little-seen Smashed. The Breaking Bad actor is magnetic as the beleaguered, blue-collar protagonist who likes to zoom through city avenues in his Gran Torino. Unfortunately though, a limp and ludicrous screenplay ensures that Need for Speed is a bumpy road that not even the smoothest actor or director could make through without lending their careers a scratch.
Paul plays Tobey Marshall, the lone descendent in a family with an established racing legacy, although he does not quite have the prowess to race in the big leagues. Instead, Tobey works as a mechanic at a garage owned by his late father.

This could have been the one. After years of being served up with terrible video game adaptations, Need for Speed looked like it could've bucked the trend. EA's high-speed racing franchise is largely story-free, so the Scott Waugh-directed film wasn't bound by endless developer-enforced caveats. All it needed was the title and fast cars - making a good movie wasn't out of the question.
Sadly, the wait for a great game-to-film translation continues because Need for Speed the motion picture squanders its strong cast (led by Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul) and narrative potential thanks to a duff script that rebounds from one listless action sequence to another.

DreamWorks Pictures’ Need For Speed marks an exciting return to the great car culture films of the 1960s and ’70s, when the authenticity of the world brought a new level of intensity to the action on-screen. Tapping into what makes the American myth of the open road so appealing, the story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country journey for our heroes — one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over 150 million units sold, “Need for Speed” captures the freedom and excitement of the game in a real-world setting, while bringing to life the passion for the road that has made our love of cars so timeless.

Aaron Paul's first role after "Breaking Bad" ended its run is going to be markedly different from that of Jesse Pinkman. In "Need For Speed," Paul plays a car mechanic/driver named Tobey Marshall whose need for revenge sends him on a cross-country adventure.
Director Scott Waugh wanted someone "unexpected" for the role of Tobey, which is why he thought Paul would be perfect for the part. Screenwriters John and George Gatins claim that Hollywood "couldn't talk about these kind of movies without talking about Aaron" -- and of course Steven Spielberg wanted him for the flick.
"We were excited because Aaron even said, 'I can't imagine that I was the first thing everybody thought of. He was like, 'The fact that you guys want to give me this opportunity' -- he's a very humble guy -- and he was really thrilled and enthralled," John recalls to Zap2it...

When Need for Speed was announced, it was mildly confounding. It makes sense in a world where Fast and Furious has become a billion dollar franchise, but, from a storytelling perspective, not so much. If you’re not sure why that is, you likely never played the video game series, which doesn’t have an actual narrative. Unless building up toward better cars counts as plot. That’s actually one of the few ties the movie will have to the game. If it were called anything other than Need for Speed, it wouldn’t raise an eyebrow as a potential game rip-off. This may come as a surprise, but that’s a good thing, for a variety reasons. Disney recently held a press day for director Scott Waugh‘s (Act of Valor) video game adaptation, and while in attendance, screenwriter John Gatins (Flight), who cracked the story with his brother and the film’s writer George Gatins made...

"We'll settle this behind the wheel." While the teaser trailer for DreamWorks' adaptation of the video game Need for Speed mostly focuses on beautiful visuals paired with some haunting but gorgeous music, the fill trailer dives into the story and the dialogue. Unfortunately, that means we get to see what will likely be the weakness of this action thriller. Almost every line of dialogue coming from Aaron Paul sounds melodramatic and cheesy, but maybe that's the point. At least the racing sequences look awesome, and the photography on display continues to look stunning. Let's hope this offers more than the eye candy though. Here's the full trailer for Scott Waugh's Need for Speed, originally from the film's YouTube channel: Need for Speed is directed by stuntman turned director Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) and written by George Nolfi (The Bourne Ultimatum), John Gatins (Real Steel) and producer George Gatins.

Need for Speed might be based on a video game, but director Scott Waugh wasn’t interested in digital representations for his feature film. Nearly everything you see on-screen is real, whether it’s a car jumping a medium or flying off a bridge. What else would you expect from a veteran stuntman turned director?
The wild card was getting an actor to sign up for that.
When Waugh first approached Aaron Paul to star in his first post-Breaking Bad film, he didn’t mince words: ”I told him, If you really want to do this movie, I need...

Watch the new trailer and check out fresh photos in the gallery from DreamWorks' Need for Speed starring Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Ramon Rodriguez, Rami Malek, Scott Mescudi, Dakota Johnson, Harrison Gilbertson and Michael Keaton. Scott Waugh directs the eagerly-anticipated big screen adaptation of Electronic Arts' fast-paced car game, screenwritten by George Gatins, from the story by George and John Gatins. The film centers around Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul), a blue-collar mechanic who races muscle cars on the side in an unsanctioned street-racing circuit. Struggling to keep his family-owned garage afloat, he reluctantly partners with the wealthy and arrogant ex-nascar driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). But just as a major sale to car broker Julia Bonet (Imogen Poots) looks like it will save Tobey's shop, a disastrous race allows Dino to frame Tobey for a crime he didn’t commit, and sending Tobey to prison while Dino expands his business out west.

Dreamworks' Pictures has released the first official teaser trailer for the upcoming adaptation of the video game franchise, Need for Speed. While it shows plenty of mood and cars (of course), it's pretty light on the story side of things. Though that's about par for the course for a teaser trailer. Come inside to check it out.
Of all the video games out there deserving of a movie adaptation (many currently in the works or have been trying for years) it's amazing to me that Need for Speed is the one actually coming out. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it just boggles my mind. As I said, the trailer here doesn't give much in the way of story, but that's not a slight. Most teaser trailers are about mood and piquing your interest for a movie.
I'm not entirely sure I'm that interested after seeing the trailer, but then...

"I will find strength, find guidance, and I will triumph." Well, we weren't expecting this. The first trailer for DreamWorks' adaptation of the racing video game series Need for Speed has arrived, and it's hauntingly beautiful and action-packed all at the same time. Using a slow, sweeping orchestral score and a gorgeous opera voice, the soundtrack is juxtaposed with the fast-paced action in the film starring "Breaking Bad" regular Aaron Paul. This looks intense, and just might give the Fast & Furious franchise a run for its money, bringing some emotional weight to the adrenaline-fueled action. Or this could just be a trick. Watch! He's got a need, a need for speed. Disney has officially released the first two "first look" photos from Scott Waugh's Need for Speed, adapting the popular racing video game into another adrenaline-fueled action movie. Considering we've only posted the early featurette for this, it's worth sharing these two images as well. Following in the footsteps of the Fast & Furious franchise, Disney is getting their hands in the racing movie game. Up-and-comer Aaron Paul (of "Breaking Bad") stars in Need for Speed, along with Dominic Cooper, Kid Cudi and Dakota Johnson, all of whom can be seen in these rather stale early promo shots. The first two photos released from Disney for Need for Speed, featuring Paul, Cooper, Johnson & Kid Cudi: Need for Speed is directed by stuntman turned director Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) and written by George Nolfi (The Bourne Ultimatum), John Gatins (Real Steel) and producer George Gatins.

Need For Speed – looks that DreamWorks is quite serious about that project! As you probably know, we’re talking about Scott Waugh‘s upcoming movie based on the Electronic Arts streetracing game of the same name which already has Aaron Paul and Dominic Cooper on board. Now, comes the word that Michael Keaton will join them as well and that he’ll play the reclusive and eccentric host of an underground supercar race. Keaton can handle it, right? So, at this moment we know that Scott Waugh is set to direct the movie from a script written by George Gatins, which will (according to Hv) center on:...

Thanks to an extended trailer that featured even more stunts, action and car racing than the Super Bowl spot (not to mention more Gina Carano vs. Michelle Rodriguez), Fast & Furious 6 has dominated a lot of attention today, but it's no longer the only big car-centric action movie on the block. Dreamworks is quickly putting together their adaptation of the Need For Speed video game series with Aaron Paul and Dominic Cooper already set to star, and today they're stealing a bit of attention away from the established franchise by adding Batman to its lineup. Michael Keaton, who has been absent from the feature scene since 2010's The Other Guys and Toy Story 3, is continuing his comeback by adding Need For Speed to his upcoming slate. Based on a script by brothers John and George Gatins, the film is about a street racer (Paul) who is framed by his former...
