Tributes have poured in from across the music industry following the news of The Specials frontman Terry Hall’s death.
The Coventry two-tone band announced that Hall had died aged 63 on Monday (19 December) following a brief illness.
The band tweeted: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing, following a brief illness, of Terry, our beautiful friend, brother and one of the most brilliant singers, songwriters and lyricists this country has ever produced.
“Terry was a wonderful husband and father and one of the kindest, funniest, and most genuine of souls. His music and his performances encapsulated the very essence of life… the joy, the pain, the humour, the fight for justice, but mostly the love.
“He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him and leaves behind the gift of his remarkable music and profound humanity. Terry often left the stage at the end...

Wish I Was Here, Boyhood and Guardians Of The Galaxy take a mixtape approach to their soundtracks. Ivan looks at what makes them so great...
"You gotta hear this one song. It'll change your life, I swear," a girl (Sam) in a doctor's waiting room once said to a boy (Andrew) who looked a lot like Zach Braff. Then, she placed a pair of headphones over his ears and played him The Shins.
Garden State's soundtrack became a must-have for all fans in 2004 thanks to its effective use - and curation - of indie artists, acoustic ditties and mild electronica. It was an album that showed a jukebox soundtrack (traditionally the territory of Tarantino) could do something different, whether that was introducing people to obscure bands they hadn't heard of or connecting you with others who also liked the movie's music.
10 years later, filmmakers are still chasing the same thing: the ultimate mixtape.

The Shins have a great tune "So Says I," but now it's time for a hazy "So Now What." The indie rockers -- who have been curbed more recently as James Mercer has pursued other musics with Danger Mouse in their project Broken Bells -- contributed the new tune to Zach Braff's "Wish I Were Here" film, which went the crowd-funding route last year. As you'll remember, Natalie Portman famously put headphones on Braff's head to the tune of The Shins "New Slang" in the former "Scrubs" star's directorial debut "Garden State" (2004). "It'll change your life, I swear," her character Sam says. Well, it certainly did change the band life of The Shins. So the circle of life continues. "Wish I Was Here" also has new songs from the likes of Bon Iver, Coldplay and Cat Power, plus previously released songs from The Head and the Heart and Hozier.

Zach Braff's 'Wish I Was Here' Soundtrack Features New Songs By Coldplay, The Shins, Bon Iver & More
Get your iPods ready (do people still use those?) as Zach Braff is back. The "Garden State" writer/director is ready to bring some twee dramedy flavor to your summer with his Kickstarter funded "Wish I Was Here," and certainly, some of that cash must have gone to securing some of these artists, because the line-up of new songs he's managed to score is pretty impressive. Hell, folks at major studios aren't even putting in this kind of effort, so hats off to Braff. Among those contributing new tunes to his movie include Coldplay and Cat Power who team up (!) to deliver the title song, professional sad sack Bon Iver who contributes "Heavenly Father," and "So Now What" by the life-changing The Shins (you can hear part of that song in the recent trailer). Elsewhere, Braff manages to secure a Paul Simon jam, that other Bon Iver track that everyone has heard by now,...

Elizabeth Wurtzel’s The Bachelor Recap: All the Promises Will Be Broken Nothing feels more like escape than to go back on your word By Elizabeth Wurtzel It’s time for another season of The Bachelor, America’s pre-eminent reality show for romantic group dates, high-profile rejections, crying pharmaceutical saleswomen, and rendering the phrase “true love” utterly meaningless through ceaseless repetition. This season, we have asked Elizabeth Wurtzel, author of Prozac Nation and Bitch, to confront our favorite national circus nightmare. Join Elizabeth each Tuesday for all the squabbling and hot-tubbing that’s fit to air on ABC. Tonight we'll be free/ All the promises will be broken. So exudes Bruce Springsteen in the bridge of "Thunder Road," the triumphant track that opens his 1975 breakthrough album Born To Run. In a press release issued today about Universal's slate of upcoming animated movies produced by Illumination Entertainment, we got word on when the already announced "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and the properly assumed "Despicable Me 3" would hit theaters nationwide. But they also announced an untitled project for 2016, one that is infinitely more interesting than either of these projects—an animated feature written and directed by Garth Jennings, who was responsible (alongside frequent creative partner Nick Goldsmith) for some of the more unforgettable videos in recent memory—bands such as Radiohead, Blur, Pulp, Badly Drawn Boy, Beck, Hot Chip, Supergrass, R.E.M.—as well as big-screen vehicles "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and "Son of Rambow." Color us intrigued. Not much is known about the project (you can read the annoyingly cryptic synopsis below), although it should be known that this is the first big-screen project...

The Oscars are a little over two months away, and with so many fantastic films released throughout this year, the anticipation surrounding the announcement of the nominations next month is running on high.
So far, we’ve had the shortlists for the Best Animated Feature, the Best Visual Effects, and the Best Documentary categories.
Now the Academy has announced the list of 104 films that are eligible in the Best Original Score category, and it’s going to be very interesting to see what makes the final cut come nominations time next month.
I think Hans Zimmer’s score for The Dark Knight Rises is, hopefully, a lock, because it is amazing. I also loved James Horner’s score for The Amazing Spider-Man, but can’t decide whether or not I think it will earn a nomination.
Alexandre Desplat has three films in the running this year, with Argo, Rise of the Guardians,...

As far as I'm concerned, the two most memorable scores of the year belong to Cloud Atlas and Beasts of the Southern Wild. That said, I made an egregious and unforgivable mistake when filling out my Critics' Choice nominations and forgot to include not one of them, but Both of them! Shame. I feel it. Now I have to hope my fellow Bfca members came through where I failed. However, we will discuss Critics' Choice nominations more on the upcoming episodes of the RopeofSilicon podcast, for now we're talking Oscar as the Academy has released a complete list of all 104 original scores competing for Best Original Score at the 2013 Oscars. I have not yet posted my predictions for Best Original Score and while I am making a fuss above concerning Cloud Atlas and Beasts of the Southern Wild, I think both of those stand a very strong chance at a nomination this year.

The best original song category at the Academy Awards is about as unpredictable a category as it gets, save maybe best foreign language film and best documentary. Though in the past decade there's been some surprisingly inspired winners in the likes of The Swell Season's "Falling Slowly" (from "Once") Eminem's "Lose Yourself" (from "8 Mile"), Three 6 Mafia's "It's Hard Out There For a Pimp" (from "Hustle & Flow") and Ryan Bingham and T-Bone Burnett's "The Weary Kind" (from "Crazy Heart"), the Academy's music branch has in general had a very difficult time figuring how to be consistent in rewarding the most deserving songs in a given year. Karen O's "All is Love" (from "Where The Wild Things Are") Badly Drawn Boy's "Silent Sigh" (from "About a Boy") . Gustavo Santaolalla, Bernie Taupin and Emmylou Harris's "A...

Recently, British artist Damien Hirst unveiled two new unexpected pieces of art. He painted and modified a Fender Telecaster electric and an Eastwood acoustic guitar, both in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the death of Joe Strummer, the former lead singer of The Clash.
The guitars are adorned with two of Hirst's signature painting styles: one is decorated in the artist's famous polka dots while the other received his well known spin-paint treatment. Both instruments will be entered into a public raffle with all proceeds going toward Strummerville: The Joe Strummer New Music Foundation, which was set up in the Clash co-founder's name by his friends and family after his death in 2002 in order to help support unsigned bands and assist youth outreach projects across the UK and beyond.

What's in a title? There's something both extremely specific and entirely universal about the one for "Another Bullshit Night In Suck City," an autobiographical book from Nick Flynn, suggesting everyday life becoming a Moebius strip of inevitability in the futile search for truth. In its film form, however, 'Suck City' has instead become "Being Flynn," which, aside from commercial suicide, means next to nothing after watching the film either. Most of this has to do with the fact that Nick Flynn, the casual junkie and sometimes poet layabout who somewhat accidentally finds his voice as a writer, is a fairly unremarkable, uninteresting guy.
Paul Dano plays Flynn, a knockabout underachiever who never quite found his calling. Falling ass-backwards into a never-once-authentic three man living arrangement, he finds himself trapped in an endless loop of odd jobs and menial labor, trapped in the shadow of his misanthropic, frequenty vanishing father. Paul Dano is no stranger to dark parts. Who could forget him as the silent, nihilistic teen in "Little Miss Sunshine" or the crazy preacher in "There Will Be Blood"?
Dano takes it to a new level in "Being Flynn" as Nick Flynn, an aimless young man who takes a job at a local homeless shelter. When his long-estranged father Jonathan (Robert De Niro) -- a racist, homophobic, belligerent alcoholic who claims to be a genius -- becomes a resident at the shelter, Nick's already shaky world is thrown into chaos.
"Being Flynn" was adapted by writer-director Paul Weitz from the real Nick Flynn's memoir "Another Bulls**t Night in Suck City." Julianne Moore costars as Nick's tough-talking, broken-hearted mom.

It's hard to believe, but the last time Robert De Niro turned up in a meaty drama worthy of his talents way back in 1995, when both both "Casino" and "Heat" hit theaters.

In director Paul Weitz ("About a Boy")'s adaptation of Nick Flynn's memoir "Another Bullsh** Night in Suck City," De Niro stars as Jonathan Flynn, a crazy old man who claims to being one of America's greatest writers. Trouble is, despite some evident talent, the guy is a raging drunk who's spent his fair share of time behind bars. To make matters worse, he's been absent from the life of his son,...

The last time filmmaker Paul Weitz and indie-folk musician Damon Gough (a.k.a. Badly Drawn Boy) teamed up, it was on 2002's adaptation of Nick Hornby's "About a Boy." Ten years on, it's still considered by many of Gough's fans to be some of his finest work.
Now, the dynamic duo of movies about guys with parenthood issues is reuniting for another literary adaptation, "Being Flynn," Weitz's take on author Nick Flynn's memoir "Another Bulls**t Night in Suck City." Can jangly, emotionally compelling lightning strike twice?
The answer is yes, but only to a limited degree. To be certain, Badly Drawn Boy can turn out a heartfelt ballad. The opener, "I'll Keep the Things You Throw Away," is Beatles-esque, and its plaintive violins make for excellent romantic-playlist material. "The Smile Behind Your Face" has a certain funk to it, propelled as it is by a prominent...

Pairing up rising young actor Paul Dano with seasonsed and respected veteran Robert De Niro, in a film directed by Chris Weitz ("About A Boy," "In Good Company") and powered by a soundtrack of fresh music by Badly Drawn Boy, "Being Flynn" has the ingredients in place to be something memorable. And as the film opens this weekend in limited release, and begins rolling out a cross the country, we've got a few things to help spur your excitement for the film. But first, here's just a brief recap of what it's all about. Nick Flynn (Dano) is a young writer seeking to define himself. He misses his late mother, Jody (Julianne Moore), and her loving nature. But his father, Jonathan, is not even a memory, as Nick has not seen the man in 18 years. Jonathan Flynn (De Niro) has long defined himself as a great writer, "a master storyteller.

The idea of using a single band or singer-songwriter to score a film has fallen somewhat out of favor since the heyday of the 1960s/1970s, when films like "The Graduate" and "Harold & Maude" used the music of Simon & Garfunkel and Cat Stevens to echo and underline the on-screen action. But a few filmmakers, in conscious homage to those pictures, have given it a stab in recent years, with Badly Drawn Boy's work on "About A Boy" and the upcoming "Being Flynn," and Alex Turner's tunes for "Submarine" being among the more memorable examples. And now one more acclaimed musician is getting in on the act, in the shape of British star Emma-Lee Moss, better known as Emmy The Great. Born out of the same nu-folk scene as Noah And The Whale, Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling, Emmy has released two excellent albums to date, including last year's Virtue,...

Here’s the old, but good news in case you forgot: Damon Gough – aka, knit-cap wearing singer-songwriter Badly Drawn Boy – reteamed with director Paul Weitz to compose the songs for his upcoming adaptation of Nick Flynn's memoirs, "Another Bullshit Night In Suck City," retitled “Being Flynn” for the big screen. And this is likely good news. Outside of Gough’s debut, The Hour of Bewilderbeast, one can argue Badly Drawn Boy hasn’t had a finer moment since his original soundtrack to Weitz’s 2002 film, “About A Boy,” a soundtrack that also elevated the drama as well. The Focus Features picture stars Paul Dano as author Nick Flynn, who is unexpectedly reunited with his estranged father (played by Robert De Niro), an alcoholic resident of a homeless shelter where Flynn was a social worker in the late '80's. The picture also stars Julianne Moore, Olivia Thirlby, Lili Taylor and Dale Dickey.

The holidays can be a stressful time. To combat those inevitable surges of annoyance that arise only around family, we've complied a selection of Christmas songs that just might help keep those feelings at bay. Some have Christmas-sounding titles (but have nothing to do with Christmas), some are about Christmas (but not in the traditional vein), and others are covers of traditional Christmas songs by untraditional people (we're looking at you, Scott Weiland). From Kanye and Mogwai to Kate Bush and The Ramones, there's a little something for everyone here -- just don't play the ones marked "Not Safe for Home" around the kiddies. So the next time you feel the urge to talk back to your mom, take a moment to pause, press play and let the music drown out the comebacks.

There’s a particular joy that comes from an excellent soundtrack accompanying an excellent movie. When the music matches the moment, from The Full Monty to Pulp Fiction to Cool Runnings, we experience a moment of aesthetic contentment.
But what about when the soundtrack is infinitely superior to the film? Buying soundtracks is often a great musical choice, because you get songs from a variety of artists – but what if the film they accompany was mediocre? Or worse still, one you’d never consider (or admit to) watching in a million years?
Here are a few that deserve to be placed in brown paper covers, or filed in itunes under a different name:
The ok-movie-Kickass soundtracks:
10 – About a Boy is a feelgood romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant (how very surprising, I hear you gasp), with a lovely script. It’s one of those films you enjoy, but can’t really remember.

[1] After a promising start that included sweet, gentle About a Boy, Paul Weitz's career hasn't been doing so well these past few years. His more recent work include American Dreamz, Cirque du Freak, and Little Fockers, none of which are exactly creative smashes. But if the moving trailer for his next project, Being Flynn, is any indication, Weitz could be on his way up again. Based on Nick Flynn's acclaimed memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, Being Flynn centers around the relationship between a young writer (Paul Dano) and his absentee father (De Niro). The two cross paths one night at a homeless shelter, where the son works and the dad is seeking a room. Watch the trailer after the jump. [via The Playlist [2]] It's here that I'll admit my opinion of the trailer is probably colored by the very effective use of both "Helplessness Blues" by Fleet Foxes and...

Badly Drawn Boy (aka Damon Gough) has recently recorded his score for the comedy drama Another Bullshit Night in Suck City. The movie based on the memoir of Nick Flynn is adapted for the screen and directed by Paul Weitz (Little Fockers, In Good Company). The film starring Robert De Niro and Paul Dana tells the story of a young writer who takes a job at a homeless shelter in Boston where one night he discovers his long-absent father seeking a bed. Julianne Moore and Olivia Thirlby are co-starring. Weitz is also producing the project with Michael Costigan (Cyrus, Smart People) and Andrew Miano (A Single Man, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist). Badly Drawn Boy has previously worked with Paul Weitz and his brother Chris on the 2002 dramedy About a Boy starring Hugh Grant and Toni Collette. British author Nick Hornby’s second novel About A Boy is a study of teenage isolation and a friendship forged through a shared love of the band Nirvana. The book’s title was inspired by a song (‘About A Girl’) on Nirvana’s seminal album ‘Bleach’ and was written in the wake of Kurt Cobain’s suicide. When it was announced that the book was to be adapted into a film by the guys behind ‘American Pie’ Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love reportedly stepped in and vetoed any mention or use of Nirvana’s music in the film. As a result the film is substantially different from the book but still manages to capture the essence of Hornby’s novel.

The appeal of Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, two charismatic actors, is lost for much of a film that is flawed at its most basic level. Structurally, Just Go With It is cynical, nasty and misogynistic. There is no excuse in a post-Nick Hornby /Judd Apatow landscape for a film that relegates an entire gender to a plot device. Its lack of acknowledgment or even critique is (unintentionally, I suppose) crueler than In The Company of Men.
Consider Danny (Sandler), a plastic surgeon. I rarely find comedies with plastic surgeons enjoyable – at their core they are portrayed as sleazy “artists” interested in enhancing. Sure, Danny does some pro-bono work on children, but we see the horror stories as well, including a women who accidentally slammed her unhealthily enlarged boob in a car door. Thrawn marks the first official Stateside King Creosote release, and it’s a compilation of the best of that best: songs like the snappy, board-game-inspired “You’ve No Clue Do You,” the honking, music-hall-ish “Bootprints,” and the solemn, churchly “The Vice-Like Gist Of It.” King Creosote’s music shares some of the inventive, kitchen-sink quality of early Badly Drawn Boy and some of ...

For “Black Swan,” director Darren Aronofsky trusted longtime collaborator Clint Mansell to fill out the whole soundtrack. The upcoming film “Blue Valentine,” meanwhile, is scored entirely by indie rock band Grizzly Bear.
And then, of course, there’s Daft Punk‘s creation for the upcoming “Tron: Legacy.”
But these defy movie soundtrack conventions. The majority of the great ones are more like mixtapes (yeah, we’re referencing you, Zach Braff), made by director for his girlfriend film. It is sweet, but impersonal.
So when a director collaborates with only one musician to build the soundtrack, it’s like a boyfriend writing and recording an entire album for and inspired by his girlfriend. With that in mind, here are our 13 favorite single-artist soundtracks.

Music videos are easy to demonise but these days it’s the avenue most taken into feature film-making for a lot of wannabe directors. Forget the romance of film school. In many ways it harks back to the days of learning on the job and honing your skills as you go along. Like cinema itself, the rise of the music vid as produced a mixture of the good, the bad and the ugly.
