A Michigan man convicted of murdering another after his victim identified him as his same-sex crush during a 1995 TV taping of the Jenny Jones show will soon be released from prison, People confirms.
A Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman confirmed the parole of Jonathan Schmitz, who was 24 when he fatally shot an acquaintance, Scott Amedure, 32, on March 9, 1995. The killing came three days after Amedure revealed his infatuation with Schmitz during the nationally syndicated program’s taping on the topic of “secret crushes.”

London, April 13: Scientists have revealed that gardening can help in treating the 'blues' as it is now being increasingly used as an effective therapy to help drug addicts, soldiers with post-traumatic disorders and stroke victims.
Sir Richard Thompson, president of the Royal College of Physicians, said that more doctors should promote gardening therapy, which not just benefits the patients, but also creates "huge potential savings for the NHS", the Independent reported.
The researchers have also said that just looking at a garden has been scientifically proven to improve recovery time and patients do much better after surgery if they look at "green things".

Good news for fans of Ira Levin! The Weinsteins have secured the rights to bring a feature film version of his 1973 Broadway thriller Veronica's Room to the big screen for the first time. We're just surprised it's taken this long!
From the Press Release
Bob and Harvey Weinstein announced today they have signed on to executive produce, finance, and distribute a big-screen adaptation of author Ira Levin’s (Rosemary’s Baby, The Stepford Wives, Deathtrap) 1973 Broadway thriller Veronica’S Room, produced by The Allegiance Theater’s Daniel Dubiecki (Juno, Up In The Air) and Lara Alameddine, who originally brought the project to the Weinsteins’ new moniker, TWC-Dimension.
The dark tale of Veronica’S Room explores the thin line between fantasy and reality. Students Susan and Larry find themselves enticed to an old New England mansion by its caretakers to meet the sole surviving member of the family. They insist that...

Toyota Park in Bridgeview played played host Friday to folk-rock royalty.
Bob Dylan, My Morning Jacket and Chicago's own Wilco -- as well as Richard Thompson -- played the Chicago area as part of the Americanarama mini-festival.
Photographer Joshua Mellin was at the show and reported Wilco and My Morning Jacket's cover of Neil Young's "Cinammon Girl" among the evening's highlights. Though the event was sold out, the concert was somewhat sparsely attended -- perhaps due to Richard Plant's concurrent show at Taste of Chicago in the more centrally-located Grant Park.
Mellin shared some shots below.

Buddy Miller & Jim Lauderdale Thursday, February 21, 2013 The Bowery Ballroom, NYC
Some music needs to be heard in concert to be fully appreciated. No amount of spin doctoring by journalists or peer pressure from fanatical fans can justify an act unless one catches said act live. Best to let the music do the talking in a live music venue and judge said act accordingly. And so it was, again, last night at Bowery Ballroom where Jim Lauderdale and Buddy Miller performed a well-crafted, expertly executed set of Americana music that was exhilarating, entertaining, and well, just plan fun.
I first met the Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter Jim Lauderdale back in the early '90s, around the release of his second solo CD, Pretty Close to the Truth. And I discovered Buddy because he played guitar on Jim's records. I was struck by how effortlessly Jim spun gold with his brand of authentic,...

-- Richard Thompson, "Electric" (New West Records)
On "Electric," Richard Thompson plugs in and delivers his most generous helping of guitar solos in many years, perhaps ever. The fretwork is marvelous even by his lofty standards, and some credit for inspiration probably goes to producer Buddy Miller, a fair picker himself.
While Thompson's notes come in a flurry, he has always been prolific as a composer, too, and here he serves up another solid batch of songs. He might get flagged for a late hit on Sarah Palin with "Sally B," but it rocks, as does "Stony Ground," where unrequited love turns bloody. Otherwise, the body count's lower than on most Thompson albums.
He's ably accompanied by his touring mates, drummer Michael Jerome and bassist Taras Prodaniuk, and the arrangements give the guitarist plenty of room to do his thing. Each time Thompson launches into one of his eclectic breaks,...

Vertigo Films have announced that they are set to release Spring Breakers in association with Universal Pictures on April 5th in UK and Ireland, while it’s scheduled for a March 22nd release in the Us. Spring Breakers is written and directed by Harmony Korine, and stars Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Rachel Korine, Ashley Benson and James Franco.
Brit (Benson), Candy (Hudgens), Cotty (Korine) and Faith (Gomez) have been best friends since grade school. They live together in an average college dorm and are hungry for adventure. All they have to do is save enough money for spring break to get their shot at having some real fun. A serendipitous encounter with rapper ‘Alien’ (Franco) promises to provide the girls with all the thrill and excitement they could hope for. With the encouragement of their new friend, it soon becomes unclear how far the girls are willing to go to...

You can't have a sea chantey without the term "swarthy," can you? To acquiesce to the aural demands of a pirate ballad collection is Tom Waits and Rolling Stones' Keith Richards, gently and collectively covering "Shenandoah." The folk classic is included on "Son Of Rogues Gallery," the sequel, as it were, to 2006's "Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs, and Chanteys"; it's out Feb. 19 via Waits' label Anti-. The first double-cd set featured songs from Richard Thompson and Nick Cave. This newest double-album edition contains "Shenandoah," plus covers from Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Patti Smith, Sean Lennon, Shane McGowan (see below)...

Downton Abbey Season Two ($49.99 BluRay; PBS)
Poldark The Complete Collection ($79.99; Acorn) -- Don't tell my mother, but Downton Abbey has swiftly declined from a pale imitation of the original Upstairs Downstairs to a pale imitation of Falcon Crest. She's enjoying the show but I quickly switched from eagerness to see if the second season could build on the over-praised first to laughter at its foolishness to boredom. The first season lifted entire plot lines from U/D (and shamelessly from Mrs. Miniver) but it was fun. This season it has gone completely off the rails, with episodes ending with soap-like revelations (complete with "da-dum!" foreboding musical cues), characters behaving utterly without rhyme or reason from one moment to the next. Why, for example, has Isobel Crawley gone from a sensible if blunt woman to a blithering idiot? The plot twists come so fast and furious all you can do is laugh.

Babelgum has picked up exclusive first run distribution rights on Scott Adams' Dilbert animated cartoon series as well as the New Yorker's and a handful of others—Bloom County, Michael Fry and T Lewis’ Over the Hedge, Paul Gilligan’s Pooch Café and Richard Thompson’s Cul de Sac. The deal is with RingTales, an online distributor of animated cartoons, and adds to Babelgum's previous library of non-exclusive cartoon clips from the company. Popular cubicle dweller Dilbert had previously been a major hit on iTunes, where it claimed the #1 podcast spot earlier this summer with over 2 million downloads for the month of July. The new Babelgum deal means it will have first run on new episodes, before its other partners like iTunes, MSN and even Dilbert.com. The short, under 30-second clips will live on Babelgum Comedy’s Animation sub-channel. Given their bite size lengths and name recognition it's...

For most musical acts, getting a boxed set is the grand finale to their career. Look at Hall & Oates. The most successful pop duo of all time, Hall & Oates are only getting their first boxed set in October. In contrast stands Richard Thompson, a man dubbed by Rolling Stone as one of the 20 greatest guitarists of all time, alongside the likes of Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Robert Johnson and Jimi Hendrix. (Thompson has jammed with most of them, though Johnson has proven a hard nut to crack.) Thompson is onto his third or fourth boxed set (depending on how you count them), this one a career-spanning collection of his greatest hit(s) called Walking On A Wire ($59.98; Shout Factory). Like Neil Young, Thompson has enjoyed extraordinary critical acclaim playing with various groups: first with the legendary (and still-ongoing) Fairport...

Alright, no one but me is paying attention to this Glasgow music, but it just keeps coming, and it's remarkable.
Today's installment: Carbeth, by Glasgow's Trembling Bells. There are elements here that will delight fans of early Fairport Convention's trad rock (count me as one of them) and Devendra Banhart's twisted psychedelic folk (not so much a fan, although I do hear moments of ethereal, weird beauty). More importantly, lead songwriter Alex Neilson has worked with Scots trad troubadour Alasdair Roberts and indie folk hero Bonnie Prince Billy, and he's learned his lessons well, one of them being to find a lovely thrush to give voice to his sentiments. Hey, it worked well for Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny, and it works well here, too. Lavinia Blackwall fills the thrush role quite admirably, and when Neilson does sing, he brings a wobbly, reedy quality that recalls Terry Woods of the Pogues (no,...

It was the final night in a series of three sold-out shows benefiting Case. With America’s Tyson Gay out of the 100-meter dash and teammate Asafa Powell his only major rival, Jamaica’s Usain Bolt was going to make like his name and explode off the blocks. And what would his time be if he didn’t take a split second to do a chest pump before crossing the finish line? Bolt ran 100 meters in a staggering 9.69 seconds, making him the fastest man on Earth. He bested his own world record mark of 9.72 seconds, which he set in New York just two months ago. “I am going to celebrate this,” Bolt said after the race.
