Laconic Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch remained closed-off to most outlets during Super Bowl media day on Tuesday in Arizona, but Et special correspondent Michelle Williams got him to open up in a sweet moment.
News: Which Side are the Celebrities On This Super Bowl?
As she did with all the other players, Williams tried to get Lynch to put his golden pipes on display and join the Destiny's Child singer in singing a Katy Perry song when she caught up with him backstage, but she didn't expect a lot of participation. During his time at the podium, Lynch told reporters bluntly, "I'm here so I won't get fined."
According to Espn, the NFL warned Lynch that he could face a $500,000 fine if he failed to make himself available on media day.
"I have to sing?" Lynch asked Williams. "I run into people, though. I think it'd be better if you sing."

A light-hearted but entertaining look back at the glory days of VHS tapes and those who still remain passionate about them today, Rewind This! is a near-perfect documentary. Rewind This! explores the historical impact of VHS and celebrates everything we love about the now-dormant format that lives on through the collectors who still pound the pavement in search of the perfect tape.
Directed by Josh Johnson, Rewind This! features a fantastic blend of informative interviews with those who were there firsthand when VHS forever changed the entertainment industry, including Charles Band, Lloyd Kaufman, Frank Henenlotter, Roy Frumkes, Cassandra Peterson and many others. Johnson uses his experts to lay the foundation and then fills in the gaps with an array of fan and collector interviewees that proves that even though VHS tapes are a thing of yesteryear, there may never be a format that will ever revolutionize home movie distribution the...

In the 1980s, videotape changed the world and laid the foundation for modern media culture. Rewind This! traces the rise and fall of VHS from its heyday as the mainstream home video format to its current status as a nostalgic relic and prize to collectors who still cherish it. Featuring interviews with...

Directed by Lucian Castaing-Taylor & Verena Paravel
USA, 2012
The Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab is slowly out to reshape the way you see cinema and the world. Rather than set out to document the world via a recitation of facts and experiences, they’re strapping the cameras right at the edge of life – in this case, a fishing vessel off the New England coast. Even the most mundane images of fish lying about or being gutted become beautifully abstracted, almost nightmarish in the mess of flesh and organs piled upon one another. It’s when the cameras go out to sea, strapped to the bow of the boat, rocking above and below the water as seagulls follow alongside, all elements in complete harmony and cooperative unity, that Castaing-Taylor and Paravel are truly touching the heavens, achieving that which cinema so rarely dares to explore, let alone succeeds in doing so.

Opening Night and Saturday
Frightfest 2013 opened on Thursday evening with Howard and John Ford’s The Dead 2: India, a sequel to their previous Africa-set zombie flick. To be honest, it wasn’t the most auspicious start to the weekend. A zombie epidemic reaches the Asian subcontinent and American engineer Nicholas (Joseph Millson) attempts to cross the country to reunite with his Indian girlfriend Ishani (Meenu Mishra), aided only by plucky orphan boy Javed (Anand Gopal). I didn’t catch The Dead, so the novelty of watching a Zombie film set anywhere other than Middle America (or Crouch End) was not lost on me.
The various locations around rural India are occasionally used rather well. Nicolas’s introductory scene is a slow pull out from extreme close up to a panoramic shot of him dangling from a wind turbine, which works really well and there several nicely implemented vistas. Much...

Revenge horror Big Bad Wolves has won the best film prize at the Fantasia International Film Festival, which has revealed record attendance figures for its 17th edition.
Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado’s Big Bad Wolves picked up the Cheval Noir Award for Best Film.
A statement from the jury said: “With elements of horror, crime thriller, revenge drama, and wicked black comedy, Big Bad Wolves takes genre-bending to bold new levels. This sense of originality, along with its subversive political subtext, assured visual style, and impeccable ensemble cast, is what separates the film from the rest of the pack.”
Directing duo Keshales and Papushado also picked up the award for best screenplay. The Ucm-produced film tells the story of a series of brutal murders, and how they impact on the lives of a vigilante police detective, the main suspect and the father of a victim.

Selection includes three projects from Québec and the latest projects from Josh Johnson and Boris Rodriguez [pictured].
As part of their second Frontières international co-production market, Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival has revealed its Off-Frontières selection of film projects.
The selection includes three projects from Québec, including Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal director Boris Rodriguez’s next feature (Emerald Falls), as well as the latest documentary from Rewind This! director Josh Johnson (Canuxploitation).
Frontières market director Stephanie Trepanier told Screen: “We’re happy with the diversity of the Off-Frontières line-up. It allows us to feature more local projects and projects in a wider range of development stages.
“We’re also seeing more filmmakers with their first feature film project in there, which pleases us. The discovery and promotion of new genre filmmakers has always been an important element of Fantasia, and Frontières allows us to support them at an even earlier stage.”

complete coverage of the SXSW Film Festival 2013
Rewind This!
Director: Josh Johnson
Home video changed the world. The impact of the VHS tape was enormous. Rewind This! aims to trace the ripples of that impact.
(film synopsis from sxsw.com)
Who’S It For?: Do you collect VHS tapes? Did you grow up re-watching your tapes until they wore out? Rewind This! is made by movie geeks for movie geeks, especially if you grew up in the ’80s and ’90s.
Overall
It’d be easy to make a mini-series on the lasting impact of the VHS tape format in terms of not just collectable memorabilia but also the crucial preservation implications of certain titles only found on VHS. Lucky for us, director Josh Johnson has put together a nice little documentary that explores both aspects of the format in addition to bringing up equally fascinating insight...

It’s no secret that the independent film industry has been irrevocably altered by the modern financing and distribution landscapes. With new technologies rendering traditional media — both film itself and releasing platforms — obsolete, filmmakers have managed to weave the presence of such nostalgias and tropes into their work. In Josh Johnson’s Rewind This!, which had its world premiere at SXSW, the effects of the home video revolution are dissected by collectors, fanatics, programmers, and critics alike. Andrew Bujalski’s Computer Chess, which screened at SXSW following its world premiere at Sundance, is a comedic period piece in which programmers and …...

This year's SXSW Film Festival includes many movies with Austin connections, but perhaps none that can be considered so completely Austintacious as director Josh Johnson's labor of love, Rewind This! After three years of work alongside Christopher Palmer and Carolee Mitchell, the documentary about VHS premiered to a packed house at the Paramount on Monday.
Rewind This! is one of the most entertaining documentaries I've seen, detailing the birth and rise of home video recording technology in both VHS and Betamax formats and their impact on the filmmaking industry. Johnson, Palmer and Mitchell shot thousands of hours of footage with interview subjects like Lloyd Kaufman, Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell), Charles Band, Jason Eisener (Hobo With a Shotgun) and Cassandra Peterson (Elvira), and cut the material down to a feature-length exploration that blends these among with many others into a single cohesive narrative voice.

One could be forgiven for imagining director Josh Johnson's documentary debut, Rewind This!, to be a look inside the tiny niche of the current VHS collecting boom. Many of the promotional materials are a bit misleading in that way. However, this documentary paints with a much broader brush, digging through nearly forty years of ephemera and home video history to uncover the true impact of home video tape, and specifically VHS, on the world of movie fans, movie studios, and everyone in between on the supply chain. In all honesty, there is probably enough content within Rewind This! for three or four feature length documentaries, but Johnson and his tiny team of producer Carolee Mitchell and director of photography/editor Christopher Palmer, have managed to distill...

We're living in the digital age, my friends, where media exists in a cloud and has no actual physical form. But you would never know it, based on the enthusiastic SXSW audience that packed the beautiful Paramount Theatre yesterday for the premiere of Rewind This!, a wonderful documentary on the video tape boom of the '70s and '80s.
Director Josh Johnson's new doc is a loving paean to the past, a simpler time when people prowled the aisles of their local Blockbuster, marveling at big, clunky VHS clamshells covered with garish promo art that promised cheap thrills rarely delivered.
Rewind This! traces the birth, ascendance, dominance, death and rebirth of video tape through an entertaining combination of interviews and movie clips. By assembling a fascinating cross-section of academics, actors, filmmakers and fans who are in turns persuasive,...

Director Josh Johnson and producer Carolee Mitchell's VHS docu Rewind This! is every bit the love letter to the mostly forgotten format that we've been promised, but there is plenty more than just nostalgia here as well. This is just as much about the love of cinema as fondness for a particular format. On top of that, it's a really funny movie and a damn entertaining time capsule of our world of media at this particular time. The film is packed with familiar faces, from Hobo with a Shotgun director Jason Eisener to Twitch's own Editor-in-Chief Todd Brown (I'm pretty sure Todd had a particular line included just for the bombastic pronunciation of "about"). The good folks at Alamo Drafthouse play a particularly large role...

Following their release of Mads Brugger's The Ambassador, Drafthouse Films tackled a pair of very different rep titles, and the result is a pair of extremely different, but extremely entertaining features, the likes of which we don't see too often. Those films, Yk Kim's Miami Connection and Ted Kotcheff's Wake in Fright, are among the finest films I saw in 2012. The third title is their website exclusive trailer compilation, Trailer War, which is a boatload of fun and a great primer to the attitude and spirit from whence the Alamo Drafthouse sprang.Miami Connection:I don't know if I had a more enjoyable theatrical experience than my first night at Fantastic Fest 2012. For a long time prior to the advent of DVDs and Blu-Rays, videocassettes were the storage medium of choice for movies, tv shows, and other assorted things. The invention of the videocassette was revolutionary, as it allowed people to, for the first time, watch things on their schedule, rather than the network’s, and gave the public and content creators unfiltered access to each other for the first time in history. The story of videocassettes, specifically those in the VHS format, is thus a fascinating one, and it is a look at the effects of VHS tapes that director Josh Johnson intends to explore in his new documentary. Titled Rewind This!, the movie will be premiering at the South by Southwest festival, and the first trailer has now been released, and can be seen below.

What better way to wrap up Slackerwood's Fantastic Fest 2012 coverage than with a look at the two Austin-made shorts that screened during the festival, both of which I enjoyed? And what could be more fitting than to publish this article on the day that Fantastic Fest selection Sinister, written by an Austinite, opens in U.S. theaters? (I love it when I can find a reason that doesn't look like procrastination on my part.)
Dialogue is a very short short -- about one minute long -- from the Austin filmmakers pictured above. Christopher Palmer, Josh Johnson and Carolee Mitchell took a break from working on their upcoming documentary about VHS tapes, Rewind This, to shoot this unsettling conversation between a couple (Daniel Sergeant and Samantha Pitchel) about something unusual that's happening to one of them. The short film is set in a living room but it's not the setting that's creepy.

Why Watch? Admittedly, a lot of throwback films are trashy and awful because the gimmick is used to mask a lack of skill. In the case of this experimental short film (which acts as a music video for a super catchy Beaujolais song), filmmaker Josh Johnson uses the style and the commitment to shooting with a VHS camcorder to highlight his abilities. Featuring a trio of girls attempting to throw a party and a masked killer, it’s more fun than frightening, but it all adds up to a bloody good time you can nod your head to before it gets chopped off your body. What will it cost? Only 7 minutes. Skip Work. You’ve Got Time For More Short Films...

Guest Review: Josh Johnson is a lover of all things cinema, and is currently working on the definitive documentary about the history of VHS, entitled Rewind This!
One of the established tenets of popular storytelling is that the audience must be offered the opportunity to sympathize with the characters they're being asked to invest in. Failure to provide a point of access for the audience often results in anger and resentment, the feeling that a storyteller is punishing the very people he or she is meant to entertain. The Comedy has proven to be a divisive film because it refuses to offer any such points of identification.
