Martin McDonagh’s nine-fold Oscar nominee The Banshees of Inisherin, snubbed at this year’s Academy Awards, was a big winner at the 2023 Irish Film and TV Awards (IFTAs), winning three trophies, including for best film, best supporting actor for Brendan Gleeson and best supporting actress for Kerry Condon.

Leading the way with ten apiece are Kenneth Branagh’s much-fancied awards contender Beflast and Irish-language feature An Cailín Ciúin, which recently won the Grand Prix of the Generation Kplus program at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Both titles are up for Best Film, alongside Deadly Cuts, Swan Song, Who We Love, and You Are Not My Mother. Of those six, four are debut features.
For Belfast, Branagh will also contend for the Best Director and Best Script prizes. The film is up for seven Oscars this year.
On the TV Side, crime drama Kin dominated the field with 13 nominations, including Best Drama, as well as director, script, actor (twice) and actress. Vikings:Valhalla, the Netflix sequel of the popular historical show, received seven noms, as did BBC show Hidden Assets.

Cornerstone Films has boarded sales on “Herself,” the female-driven movie from “Mamma Mia!” and “The Iron Lady” helmer Phyllida Lloyd.
Irish actor Clare Dunne, who starred in Lloyd’s all-female theater production of “Henry IV,” will play a single mother determined to build her own home with a free online plan, rebuilding her life in the process. Dunne co-wrote the screenplay with Malcolm Campbell (“What Richard Did”).
Harriet Walter (“Rocketman”) and Conleth Hill (“Game of Thrones”) have also joined the cast.

Best Canadian Feature Film honours at the Toronto Film Festival went to Ruba Nadda's 'Cairo Time'. Produced by David Collins of Samson Films and Daniel Iron of Foundry Films, the feature, set in Egypt, stars Patricia Clarkson (Married Life), Tom McCamus (Killshot) and Alexander Siddig (Syriana) and examines a brief, unexpected love affair. Irish creative talent involved in the production of 'Cairo Time' included composer Niall Byrne (The Honeymooners) and production designer Tamara Conboy (Once). The winners were announced on Saturday the 19th of September.

- I guess you couldn't ask for anything more than a quality cast and the backing from competent producers if you are in the shoes of Canadian-born filmmaker Ruba Nadda. Screen Daily reports that Patricia Clarkson (Elegy) has boarded the project with co-stars Alexander Siddig (Un homme perdu), Elena Anaya (Savage Grace) and Tom McCamus set for filming. Cairo Time sees Clarkson play a woman (really?) who arrives in Cairo to meet her husband (McCamus) only to be told he is unavoidably delayed in Gaza and has in turn sent his friend (Siddig), a retired Egyptian police officer, to pick her up. The brief love affair that follows catches them both completely off guard. Executive produced by indie vets Christina Vachon and Charles Pugliese of Killer Films, and produced by Ireland's David Collins of Samson Films (Once) and the personable Daniel Iron of Foundry Films (Away From Her, Manufactured Landscapes
