Exclusive: Snow White And The Huntsman helmer Rupert Sanders has come attached to direct The Kill List, an adaptation of the new Frederick Forsyth thriller that was acquired by producers Steve Schwartz, Paula Mae Schwartz and Nick Wechsler. Give those producers credit for wasting no time, as they just bought the book last month. After they acquired the Cormac McCarthy spec script The Counselor, they had that film in production in record time at Fox with Ridley Scott directing and a cast headed by Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz. Sanders, who made his feature directing debut on Huntsman, has always been a big fan of Forsyth’s espionage thrillers, and Kill List reminded him of this Hemingway line: “There is no hunting like the hunting of men, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never care for anything else thereafter.

Exclusive: In a six-figure deal, producers Steve Schwartz, Paula Mae Schwartz and Nick Wechsler have preemptively acquired rights to The Kill List, the new novel by Day Of The Jackal author Frederick Forsyth. The contemporary espionage tale is described as an intricate chess game between a brilliant Marine, an Israeli agent, a teenage hacker and a mysterious psychopathic cleric. The novel will be published in September by Penguin. Forsyth also wrote The Fourth Protocol and The Odessa File. Schwartz, Schwartz and Wechsler will produce and Roger Schwartz is co-producer. They bought this preemptively as they did The Counselor, which went from a Cormac McCarthy spec to a green lit movie at lightning speed. Matching the gritty intensity that McCarthy has poured into books like No Country For Old Men, the script quickly drew director Ridley Scott and a cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem.

The more buzz a movie gets, the more people go to see it. When you see a couple shots in a row that you have preferred to see first in the full feature, that’s the goal of buzz.
An international trailer for writer/director Andrew Dominik‘s hard-boiled crime tale Killing Them Softly is short to the point.
Brad Pitt, who stars as hitman Jackie Cogan, recently discussed how Dominik chose to approach the film:
Well, what Andrew wanted to do with this film was interesting: He wanted to talk about America—and America as a business—but he wanted to hide it within this low-end crime drama. We in America have some grand ideals—and some very strong ideals—but a lot of times, those ideals are used for marketing.
The tough, tight crime thriller also stars Richard Jenkins, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, Scoot McNairy, and Ben Mendelsohn.

Described as both a blackly humorous gangster film and a gritty crime drama, Killing Them Softly is also said to have both, heavy political and societal undertones.

Well, the creative marketing team at Weinstein Company have released a stunning poster for this modern-times rework of George V. Higgins’ 1974 novel ‘Cogan’s Trade’ (earlier teaser poster featured a stylized gun as part of a face).
Directed by Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James), Brad Pitt (featuring in slicked-back hair, leather coat and a shotgun in hand) stars as Jackie Cogan, a well-worn enforcer who finds himself in Boston with a mission to kill small-time crooks.

Exclusive: Sam Rockwell has signed on to join Brad Pitt in the Andrew Dominik-directed comic crime saga Cogan's Trade. Pitt plays Jackie Cogan, a professional enforcer who investigates a heist that takes place during a high stakes poker game held under the protection of the mob. The picture is an ensemble and Rockwell's role isn't set but I understand he's committed. Rockwell last worked with Pitt and Dominik in The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. Their Jesse James co-star Casey Affleck has been also rumored as a possible participant. Dominik adapted the Georg V. Higgins novel. The film's being financed by Inferno Entertainment, which will handle international sales. Plan B's Pitt and Dede Gardner are producing with Chockstone's Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz. Inferno's Bill Johnson and Jim Seibel will be exec producers with Marc Butan, and Roger Schwartz is co-producer. CAA is packaging it.
