Last year, author R. G. Henning sent the book Sackhead: The Definitive Retrospective on Friday the 13th Part 2 – a 277 page book entirely dedicated to 1981’s Friday the 13th Part 2 – out into the world, and you can pick up a copy of Sackhead at This Link. Now Henning has turned his attention to the next sequel in the franchise, 1982’s Friday the 13th Part III, with the retrospective book Jason 3D: A Comprehensive Exposé on Friday the 13th Part 3, and copies are available for purchase on Amazon! The book is currently going for the price of $18.99.
Jason 3D has the following description: In 1982-83, the 3-D movie craze took the American box office by storm. Spurred on by new three-dimensional projection technology, Hollywood studios gambled on genre films. By 1984, however, most 3-D features had flopped, and audiences soon lost interest. This past Sunday, August 13th, marked the thirtieth anniversary of one of the most divisive entries in the Friday the 13th franchise, 1993’s Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (Watch It Here – OWN It Here). To mark the occasion, Jason Goes to Hell director Adam Marcus took to social media to announce that an epic documentary on the film, Hearts of Darkness: The Making of the Final Friday, is almost finished!
Marcus said, “The picture is locked. Our soundtrack is just days away from completion. It will only have to go through Color Timing next week, Sound Mix the week after and then has to be seen by our legal team (Larry Zerner in Jason’s house!) and then we’re done! It’s time for a new episode of the Real Slashers video series, and with this one we’re looking back at my personal favorite entry in my favorite franchise: Friday the 13th Part III (buy the franchise Blu-ray set Here). You can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above!
Directed by Steve Miner from a screenplay by Martin Kitrosser and Carol Watson (with some uncredited polishing by Petru Popescu), Friday the 13th Part III has the following synopsis: The third installment in the “Friday the 13th” series picks up on the day after the carnage with homicidal maniac Jason Voorhees stealing some clothes and killing a local store owner. Meanwhile, Chris and her sometimes boyfriend, Rick, are hosting a group of teenage friends at Chris’ lake house. Despite a run-in with a local biker gang, they enjoy an amiable weekend together — that is, until Jason...

Halloween came in red hot with horror announcements making the highest holiday for the strange and unusual into a full-on spooky feast. Of the many exciting drops that marked the scary season came the news that "Friday the 13th" was coming to the small screen. Yesterday, it was announced that Peacock gave a straight-to-series order to Bryan Fuller (along with A24) to create a prequel. This is a colossal announcement that comes after years of limbo since the rights to parts of the franchise have been trapped in legal hell. Now, with the most recent court decision out, and the rights split amongst entities, the outcome we've been begging for might finally have arrived.
The lawsuit surrounding the "Friday the 13th" franchise has been a frustrating saga for fans but an interesting one for legal junkies or anyone with a stake in franchise copyright. Essentially, a man named Victor Miller...

Halloween brought along with it the huge news that Peacock, Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal”), and A24 are hard at work on “Crystal Lake,” a streaming series that will serve as an expanded prequel to the Friday the 13th franchise. The announcement comes in the wake of several years worth of legal troubles for the franchise, but where exactly do things stand at this time?
And more importantly, which elements from the Friday the 13th franchise can be used in “Crystal Lake”? We’ve got an exciting update on all things Friday the 13th for you today.
To recap the franchise’s legal issues, Sean Cunningham, the original movie’s director, and Victor Miller, the original movie’s writer, have been fighting over who gets control of what.

The Friday the 13th franchise (buy the Blu-ray set Here) is my favorite horror franchise. And while Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI is the movie I credit with making me a horror fan, my favorite entry in the series is actually Friday the 13th Part III. The film just celebrated its 40th anniversary last month, and to mark the occasion 2nd assistant camera operator Mako Koiwai shared a batch of awesome, never-before-seen behind-the-scenes pictures with the folks at Smoking Zombie Films. You can see these eight images, including an incredible shot of the filming of the alternate ending (where the heroine was going to be decapitated), in this Facebook post – click Here.

"Friday the 13th Part III" holds a special place in many a horror fan's heart. Not only is it the only disco-themed 3D entry of the extensive franchise, it's the first to depict slasher king Jason Voorhees in the hockey mask that would become his trademark, as recognizable as Freddy Krueger's bladed glove or Michael Myers' Shatner mask.
Steve Miner's 1982 horror sequel built upon the lore of Voorhees, who began his reign of terror in "Part 2" wearing a plain burlap sack over his head (not dissimilar from the Phantom's bag-mask in Charles B. Pierce's '76 horror picture "The Town That Dreaded Sundown"). "Part 3" sees the introduction of fresh blood at Camp Crystal Lake, a new group of young people staying near the cursed place for a weekend. Among them is Shelly (Larry Zerner), a prankster who brings along theatrical blood, trick props, and a hockey mask (originally...

If you’re a fan of the Friday the 13th franchise, even if you don’t know Larry Zerner by name, you very likely know his face. As Shelly, the insecure and overly theatrical member of the group of teens in the series’ third installment, Zerner has the distinction of being the one to unknowingly provide Jason with the mask that would help make him an icon. But as someone who grew up with his own insecurity issues, I always identified with Shelly’s difficulty navigating social interaction, and I appreciate Zerner’s ability to convey that lack of self-worth that manifests itself as just being obnoxious.
What’s been particularly interesting is seeing how Zerner’s career evolved post-Friday the 13th. While his turn as Shelly may not have led to steady work in the industry, Zerner has hung on to his affinity for Crystal Lake even as...

It’s been a busy year for the Hellraiser franchise, with a reboot movie and a HBO series both in the works. However, the future of the property could be in for big changes, as creator Clive Barker is looking to recapture the rights to his material. Similar to the ongoing Friday the 13th rights dispute, whereby an author can choose to reverse a transfer of copyright, Barker is attempting to terminate his 1986 transfer and reclaim what has been a lucrative franchise.
Back in 1986, Barker likely wouldn’t have guessed that signing away the rights to his novella “The Hellbound Heart” would have such significant consequences. Although he directed the original Hellraiser, and was involved as producer in later movies, for the most part the franchise was exploited by Dimension Films in the 1990s and 2000s, with increasingly poor results. More recently, Spyglass Media have obtained the rights to make the reboot,...

Yesterday, I wrote a little something about the 11th anniversary of Friday the 13th‘s last appearance in theaters. On top of that momentous occasion, the original film’s director, Sean Cunningham, and the original film’s writer, Victor Miller, met in court this week to debate the rights to the first movie and all of its contents. The case seemingly may be cleared up sometime this summer, too, per an entertainment lawyer close to the proceedings.
Larry Zerner, a former actor who had a part in Friday the 13th Part III and has been following the case since its origins many moons ago, provided his professional analysis on the oral arguments presented yesterday via a long thread of Tweets on his official Twitter. A major highlight, presented here as a combination of two Tweets in the middle, gives the best insight as to what Zerner believes will ultimately happen.

Fans of the Friday the 13th franchise have had a rough go of it over the last few years, as original installment writer Victor Miller and the original film’s director, Sean S. A long-running legal dispute over the Friday the 13th franchise could finally be resolved next year after the announcement of an appeals date. We haven’t seen a new entry in the series since the reboot in 2009, with recent attempts at production complicated by who owns which rights to the brand name and characters. However, according to Bloody Disgusting, we may get a major legal decision in 2020 that could ease the way to another trip to Camp Crystal Lake.
The current battle is between original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller and director Sean S. It has been a decade since a Friday the 13th film has graced the silver screen with its particular brand of slasher nuance. That 2009 reboot of the franchise, while not awful, didn’t exactly do gangbusters at the box office. There was an attempt in 2018 to make the 13th effort in Jason’s filmography, but that try was ultimately derailed by the ongoing lawsuit between Sean S. Cunningham, director of the first movie, and Victor Miller, writer of the original entry. Last fall, courts granted ownership rights to Miller. Now, Cunningham is filing an appeal to that ruling.

Jason Voorhees is famously nigh-on unstoppable. He can be beaten, shot, stabbed, electrocuted, blown up and even literally sent to hell and he’ll keep ticking. But lately, it seems that they’ve finally pinned down the one thing that can stop him in his tracks: lawyers.
Yup, ever since Victor Miller, screenwriter of the original Friday the 13th, went to court to assert his ownership of the character, Jason has been on ice. The legal battle has meant no new movies in the series for a decade and the untimely ending of the excellent multiplayer video game.
There was some brief light at the end of the tunnel last year though when a judge ruled that Miller did indeed own the rights to that first screenplay and various concepts within (though he declined to rule on who actually owns Jason himself). That ruling could have led to Miller and...

The duo had until October 31st to appeal the court’s ruling that Miller’s entitled to ownership rights in regards to Friday the 13th‘s original script – for the record, Horror, Inc. holds foreign rights to the 1980 slasher.
And so begins another chapter in this admittedly messy saga, with no clear or tangible sign of resolution – not now, and perhaps not ever? That’s the glass-half-empty estimation, of course. Though it’s fair to say that Larry Zerner doesn’t sound...

If Michael Myers is currently riding a wave of excitement in anticipation of David Gordon Green’s Halloween sequel, which arrives in just a few weeks, then the genre’s other long-standing slasher, Jason Voorhees has struggled to catch a break in recent years.
That’s because the Friday the 13th franchise is on hold at the moment due to an ongoing legal battle between Victor Miller and Sean Cunningham’s Horror Inc. It’s one which has gripped the horror community for a while now, but at long last, there seems to be a resolution in sight.
You see, the case is based on the fact that Miller, who penned the screenplay for the 1980 horror film, believed that he was entitled to the rights to the characters and settings. He says that the script wasn’t written as “work-made-for-hire,” thus granting him intellectual property rights.

Poor Shelly. Other than the chocolate-loving Joey (who has been referenced plenty of times on our Corpse Club podcast—"Forget it, Vic, just forget it!") from Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning, Shelly from Part 3 is perhaps the most polarizing character in the franchise.
Some (like myself) find him to be a misunderstood loner seeking acceptance, while others find him annoying as hell. Either way, he's vital to the franchise for putting Jason's hockey mask in the killer's blood-smeared hands, and Fright Rags is paying their respects to the mask's original owner with their new Midnight Madness T-shirt.
Featuring Larry Zerner's memorable character from the third Friday the 13th film, Fright Rags' Shelly the 13th (can you imagine that spinoff?!) shirt is available for one day only from Friday, October 13th at 12:01am Est to Saturday, October 14th at 12:01am Est.

Blac Chyna‘s request to trademark the name “Angela Renée Kardashian” has officially been denied, according to TMZ.
Back in December, lawyers for Kim, Kourtney and Khloé Kardashian opposed the request for the 28-year-old reality star (née Angela Renée White) to trademark what her presumed married name would be if she went ahead with her then-engagement to their brother, Rob Kardashian.
According to the documents filed in December, the sisters’ lawyers claimed they’ll “suffer damage including irreparable injury to their reputation and goodwill” if Chyna takes the Kardashian name.

The ties that bind have become taut.
According to court documents obtained by People, the Kardashian siblings’ companies are legally opposing soon-to-be- sister-in-law Blac Chyna‘s attempt to trademark her presumptive married name, Angela Renée Kardashian.

It looks like poor Jason Vorhees is having some serious mommy issues, and not exactly the kind you'd expect after seeing the movies. According to THR, there was a lawsuit filed last Wednesday that is bringing the rightful owners of the Friday the 13th franchise into question.
One of the parties in question is Victor Miller. Miller was one of two writers who came up with the story for the first Friday the 13th film, and was credited as the sole screenwriter of the project. Since then, he's been credited as a character creator on many of the subsequent sequels and spinoffs. From the sound of it, he hopes to leverage his role in the creation of the character to terminate the grant of rights to the property. In other words, he wants to reclaim ownership for himself, away from the current rights holders, Horror, Inc. and the Manny Company.

Film4 FrightFest will be screening a record twenty short films, twelve of them world premieres, at this year’s August event at the Vue West End, Leicester Square – including the latest from director Federico Zampaglione entitled Remember, the Fiona Dourif starring She (which I backed on Kickstarter many moons ago) and the second Jessica Cameron-starring production showing at Frightfest, the UK-lensed short The Tour.
Spearheading this year’s selection is the world premiere of Show Pieces, three tales of terror written by Alan Moore, the genius 2000 Ad writer behind Watchmen, The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, From Hell and V For Vendetta. Moore has never previously written specifically for the screen, until now. Know what irritates the hell out of us? When people throw white makeup on the faces of their friends, splash them with stage blood, tell them to run really fast, film it, and then call it a zombie movie. So many indie filmmakers have done just that. However, Nigel Hartwell is Not one of them.
We get sent a lot of indie projects to look at around these parts from filmmakers trying to raise money for their movies. We spare you the majority of them because 95% of them will either never get made, are just plain lazy looking, or don't spark our interest.
After sitting through Hartwell's truly ambitious sales trailer for his film The Epidemic, we've gotta say, "We're sold!" Sure, it's rough around the edges, but the guy has something big and cool in mind. The best part? It's Not Safe For Work! That's right, horndogs! Here's your...

Last night, I co-hosted my 10th Dead Right Horror Trivia Night at the Jumpcut Cafe in Studio City, California with Fangoria's Rebekah McKendry and it was our biggest event of the year.
It's October and, naturally, we had to pull out all of the stops. In addition to telling teams that costumes were mandatory, we stacked on some bonus rounds, some truly killer prizes...and asked Tom Holland (Fright Night, Child's Play) and Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator, From Beyond) to come on down and co-host some rounds! Appropriately enough, Holland dished some questions from Fright Night. Gordon, meanwhile, tackled some Edgar Allan Poe trivia and stumped for his Nevermore Kickstarter.
Regulars of the monthly trivia night event know that Friday the 13th Part 3's Larry Zerner is a fixture and he turned up last night dressed as Jason Voorhees while his teammates played the ill-fated "Shelly."

Most horror films have a jokester, prankster, or trickster in them. Sometimes he or she is a disposable character who dies a gruesome death in the first half of the film; sometimes the role is fulfilled by the lead or main supporting character. Whether they live or die, the jokester is almost always responsible for breaking up the tense atmosphere with well-timed pranks, tricks, or smart-assery. Writers and directors have recognized the need for comic relief since the dawn of film, but it seems that the jokester role in horror has become more finely tuned over the last few decades. So for your reading pleasure, we bring to you nine of the most memorable jokesters in horror cinema... Marty – The Cabin in the Woods Marty (Fran Kranz) is the quintessential silver screen stoner, and represents almost every character that’s ever sparked up a joint in a horror film, but...

Take a good look at Ed Helms’ face. His character’s Maori-style face tattoo in The Hangover Part II is at the center of the lawsuit brought against Warner Bros. by S. Victor Whitmill, the artist who famously painted Hangover co-star Mike Tyson with a similar design. Earlier this week, Warner Bros. told a court that it was preparing to digitally alter Helms’ tattoo for the film’s home-video release, if a settlement with Whitmill could not be reached by that time.
The technology to change the tattoo is not complicated, though it’s not cheap either. But how far will Warner Bros.

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

Few movies have us more excited than we are for Joe Lynch's next slice of sick, Knights of Badassdom. I mean the title alone is a seller, is it not? Well, the pot just got a little bit sweeter thanks to a couple of cameos that have come to light.

There you'll find behind-the-scenes pics, like the one of co-star Summer Glau below, and Lynch's updates from the set. Also, Larry Zerner of Friday the 13th: Part 3 has informed his Twitter followers that he's making a cameo in the film. He'll join Steve Zahn, Peter Dinklage, Ryan Kwanten and Douglas Tait. The film tells of live-action role players who conjure up a demon from hell by mistake and must deal with the consequences.

Friday the 13th: Part Three 3D
Directed by: Steve Miner
Cast: Dana Kimmell, Larry Zerner, Richard Brooker
Running Time: 1 hr 32 mins
Rating: R
Plot: Jason Voorhees returns to Crystal Lake to stalk and kill almost-victim Chris (Kimmell) and her friends.
Who’s It For? Horror fans might enjoy renting this digital update. But moviegoers relatively new to Jason should check out Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan and even Jason X.
Movie:
This may not be Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, but Friday the 13th: Part Three is surely not one of Jason Voorhees’ better days. Sure, the film introduces the iconic hockey mask, and even has the 3D gimmick (more on that below). But as far as classic moments go (by that I basically mean murders), this one doesn’t offer too much gruesome goodness, its thrills flat...

It looks like Paramount realized that 3-D, which wasn’t all that great a gimmick back in its heyday, still isn’t good enough to warrant no extra features. They hadn’t figured this out when they released Friday the 13th: Part III – Deluxe Edition on DVD (with no extras at all) a few months ago, but at some point since they did. Maybe it was the negative feedback on the barebones edition, or maybe they were just trying to bait Jason fans into buying one of the weakest installments of the series when it hit Blu-ray. To be honest, it’s not such a bad idea – they’ve added three decent extra features which, when coupled with the heightened resolution, might just push the casual Friday the 13th fan to buy this wretched installment on Blu-ray.
