Andre Braugher, the two-time Emmy winner who died this week at the age of 61, was an unknown when the hardboiled NBC detective drama “Homicide: Life on the Street” debuted in the coveted post-Super Bowl time slot on Jan. 31, 1993. He left the series six years later as an in-demand leading man who went on to star in TV series include FX’s “Thief,” TNT’s “Men of a Certain Age,” Fox/NBC’s “Brooklyn Nine Nine,” in addition to many other prominent roles.
But it started with his years on “Homicide.” Braugher played Detective Frank Pembleton, one of the most unforgettable characters that television has ever produced, thanks to the brilliance of executive producers Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson and Jim Finnerty and a murderers row of a writers room. The stellar supporting cast alongside included Ned Beatty, Melissa Leo and Yaphet Kotto.

Show runner Steven Moffat was recently asked if the comment made by The Doctor in last season's premiere episode "Deep Breath," the one in which he says to a tramp: "Why did I choose this face? It's like I'm trying to tell myself something" will come back into play.
Moffat responded: "Thank you, I like that scene too. And yes, we're coming back to that idea. In fact, we'll be shooting the scene in question really quite shortly." [Source: Blogtor Who]

John Singleton is poised to be the next filmmaker to make the leap to television, as FX has picked up the pilot for Snowfall, a show co-created by Singleton. The press release had this summary of the series.
Los Angeles 1981. A storm is coming and its name is cocaine. Snowfall is a one-hour drama set against the infancy of the crack cocaine epidemic and its ultimate radical impact on the culture as we know it. The story follows three characters on a violent collision course: Franklin Saint, young street entrepreneur on a quest for power; Gustavo Zapata, a Mexican wrestler turned gangster in search of his American dream; and Logan Miller, a prominent family’s “black sheep” desperate to escape his father’s shadow.
Singleton will also direct the pilot.

Homeland, Season 3: Episode 8 – “A Red Wheelbarrow”
Written by Alex Gansa and James Yoshimura
Directed by Seith Mann
Airs Sunday nights at 9 on Showtime
Officially two-thirds through its current season, Homeland is pretty much back to where it was before a spiraling second season finish: some great espionage and character beats here and there, some questionable plotlines on the table and a whole lot of confidence that the story it is telling is something viewers are invested in seeing unfold. Of course, some viewers are not interested. Others have checked out completely. But for those who took the third episode from this season, “Tower of David,” with restrained optimism, maybe things are on the right track to getting paid off. It’s less of a stretch to convince us that Brody still belongs on this show than, say, to convince us that The Governor still belongs on The Walking Dead.

As a rule, rooting for the main character of the show you're watching to get shot is a pretty clear sign that something's gone really wrong with the show you're watching. But rules are meant to be broken. That's what Carrie Mathison thought when she defied a direct order and tried to stop the assassination of the man who could clear her beloved Brody's name, even if it meant flushing months of work down the toilet like so much lithium. And that's why, when Peter Quinn pulled the trigger and plugged Carrie in the arm,...

Homeland, Season 3: Episode 4 – “Game On”
Written by James Yoshimura and Alex Gansa
Directed by David Nutter
Airs Sunday nights at 9 Et on Showtime
For all the grief that Homeland has been getting, “Game On” serves as an excellent turning point for the season and both retroactively elevates the material from the first three episodes and re-establishes this series is one of the few premier productions on television. The most interesting way in which “Game On” reveals its twist is how the narrative tinkers with point of view. Typically, viewers are privy to a handful of people who serve as viewpoint characters. The action is seen from their perspective, and they are our inlets for receiving plot developments. Other TV series utilize an omniscient viewpoint in which we can see anything and everything at any given time (it is up to the writers to show us exactly what those things are). In omniscient narratives,...

Homeland has lined up its first new addition to the writers room with James Yoshimura. The Treme writer/executive producer is said to be moving from Chicago to Los Angeles to fill one of what is expected to be three open spots as Showtime's acclaimed terrorism drama gears up for a third season. In addition to writing, he will serve as a consulting producer on the Fox 21-produced entry, starring Claire Danes and Damian Lewis. The move marks a reunion for Yoshimura and Homeland writer/Ep Henry Bromell, who worked together on NBC’s long-running Homicide: Life on the Street. Showrunner Alex Gansa has

Emmy-winning writer-producer Tom Fontana has inked a premium two-script deal with Sony Pictures Television. Under the pact, Fontana will pen two drama pilot scripts for the studio targeted for the next development cycle, a procedural and a character-driven one-hour. This development season, Fontana co-wrote with Julie Martin The Bedford Diaries, an ensemble college-themed drama pilot for the WB Network starring Matthew Modine, Audra McDonald and Milo Ventimiglia. Fontana is executive producing the HBO Independent Prods./Warner Bros. TV project, which is contention for fall, with his producing partner Barry Levinson, Martin and Jim Finnerty. Last season, Fontana, Levinson, Finnerty and James Yoshimura executive produced Fox's well-received but short-lived legal drama The Jury. Fontana has won three writing Emmys, for penning an episode of NBC's Homicide: Life on the Street in 1993 and for co-writing episodes of NBC's St. Elsewhere in 1984 and 1986. This year, he was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the Caucus for Television Producers, Writers & Directors. Fontana is repped by UTA.

Fox has picked up the drama pilot The Jury, from Barry Levinson, Tom Fontana and James Yoshimura, as a series, possibly for midseason. The network has ordered five episodes of the 20th Century Fox TV legal drama, bringing the total order to six hours, including the pilot. Meanwhile, ABC has firmed up its commitment to the untitled Suzanne Martin comedy, ordering a pilot from the Warner Bros. TV sitcom about a hip single mom working as a wedding planner and her more conservative teenage daughter. Andy Ackerman is set to direct the pilot for the project, which had a put pilot commitment. He also will executive produce with Martin. Fontana and Yoshimura penned the pilot for The Jury, which examines the legal process through the eyes of the members of a jury. Levinson directed and guest starred in the pilot, which was filmed in December. The Jury, executive produced by Fontana, Yoshimura, Levinson and Jim Finnerty, stars Billy Burke, Adam Busch, Shalom Harlow, Jeff Hephner and Cote de Pablo. The drama was packaged by CAA.

Fox is entering The Circuit. The network has greenlighted a legal pilot from Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana targeted for midseason or fall 2004. Fontana and fellow Homicide: Life on the Street alumnus James Yoshimura have written The Circuit and are executive producing with Levinson, who might direct. HBO Independent Prods., where Levinson and Fontana are based, is producing. The project initially was developed at ABC as part of the network's exclusive deal with HBO IP. After the network passed on it, it was taken to Fox. At some point, The Circuit was married with another legal drama in development at the network from Gavin Polone's Pariah, but the two projects subsequently took off on their own (HR 3/26). Fontana is repped by UTA. Yashimura is repped by CAA.
