Magic is all around in the world of The Spiderwick Chronicles. Most of it is hidden away from the eyes of humans, tucked into obscure corners or shielded from human eyes by glamours. Still, those with hearts and minds open enough to see what’s in front of them — like our 15-year-old hero Jared (Lyon Daniels) — might find in the sleepy town of Henson, Michigan, a veritable haven of otherworldly life. Unicorns frolic in a glen. Sprites flutter alongside fireflies at dusk. Just outside the doors of a nondescript grocery, a goblin market trades in mythical weapons and pumpkin spice lattes.
But if such extraordinary sights are everywhere, the sense of wonder that ought to accompany them proves to be in disappointingly short supply. Even as The Spiderwick Chronicles‘ head drifts into the clouds, powered by fantasies of faeries and ogres and witches and dragons, the Roku Channel adventure is...

For all the headlines about the Marvel Cinematic Universe of late, surprisingly few have been focused on the franchise's latest film release, "The Marvels". The movie itself acts as a sequel to far more than Brie Larson's initial solo outing as Carol Danvers in 2019's "Captain Marvel," bringing in the grown-up Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) from "WandaVision" and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) from "Ms. Marvel" for a body-switching adventure that also picks up a key story thread involving Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and his newly-revealed Skrull wife Varra (Charlayne Woodard) from "Secret Invasion."
If your head's spinning just after reading that paragraph, you can start to imagine how "The Marvels" director Nia DaCosta felt while she was working on the film. Concerns have been growing of late that the MCU is starting to collapse under the weight of its shared continuity, so much so that even the House...

This post contains spoilers for "Secret Invasion."
The Marvel Cinematic Universe's "It's All Connected" approach has always been a double-edged sword. When every MCU film and series builds on those that came before them, you can't just sweep a misstep like "Thor: The Dark World" under the rug. In the past, however, the franchise has managed to turn its lemons into lemonade, much like it did when it made "The Dark World" a key aspect of Thor's arc in "Avengers: Endgame."
Now, the House of Ideas is facing what might be its greatest challenge yet thanks to "Secret Invasion." What could've been a triumphant series adaptation of the acclaimed 2008 comic book story by writer Brian Michael Bendis and illustrator Leinil Francis Yu has instead become the McU's biggest faux pas. Adding insult to the injury that is the show's bad reviews, "Secret Invasion" had some of the lowest viewership...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Marvel’s “Secret Invasion,” now streaming on Disney+.
Marvel’s “Secret Invasion,” a six-episode event series on Disney+, ended Wednesday with a 37-minute finale that wrapped up the MCU’s first standalone story focused on Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.
Ali Selim, an executive producer, directed all six episodes of the show, which adapted a popular Marvel Comics run that plays on the audience’s paranoia. “Secret Invasion” asks what it if the characters you thought you knew and loved were instead alien invaders — a.k.a. Skrulls, an alien race introduced in 2019’s “Captain Marvel” — posing as them? Then, as the show’s tagline wonders, “Who do you trust?”
Ahead of “Secret Invasion’s” premiere episode, Selim told Variety that if he, like the Skrulls, could shape-shift into any Marvel character, he’d like to become Nick Fury. As the architect behind the Avengers initiative,...

Like it or not, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will definitely remember the Samuel. L Jackson-led Secret Invasion. Whether it be as the show that sent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) off in underwhelming style, or as the six-part series that created the MCU’s most Op character in Super Skrull G’iah (Emilia Clarke), there’s a lot to discuss now the final credits have rolled.
As with all these Disney+ series, Secret Invasion set the stage for upcoming outings, including The Marvels and Captain America: New World Order. However, you might’ve missed a major tease of a whole franchise hiding in plain sight. If the surprise reveal that Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) could be a mutant has taught us anything, it’s to hunt in the most unlikely places for the X-Men. In the Secret Invasion finale, it looks like a case of X marks the spot.

This article discusses major spoilers from the "Secret Invasion" finale.
Remember those innocent days when we all thought that "Secret Invasion" would actually be Marvel's most grounded and nuanced story since "Captain America: The Winter Soldier"? Well, we may have spoken much too soon. The sixth and final installment of the series, titled "Home," brought things to a very familiar, Marvel-typical end (you can read my recap for /Film here) despite the previous five episodes taking great pains to tell a slow-burn plot that cribbed from countless espionage thrillers that came before.
Well, all that went out the window once Gravik (Kinglsey Ben-Adir) began to throw down in his Super Skrull form against G'iah (Emilia Clarke), who was gifted the same powers taken from the vial of Avengers DNA that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) recovered at the end of last week's episode. Suddenly, this down-and-dirty series brought us back...

If there’s one thing that the MCU has taught us about Nick Fury, it’s that he’s pretty damned good on his own, but when he gets a team together who work towards his cause, whether it be Skrulls, Shield agents, or Avengers, he’s a lot better. Secret Invasion has compounded this theme throughout, revealing that some of Nick’s greatest achievements would never have happened without his worker bees. And in its fifth episode, “Harvest”, Nick’s new team begins forming in order to help him deal with the Gravik situation, even as he maintains he’s the only one who can really resolve the conflict and clean up the mess he made.
To that end, the “good guys” are split off into pairs ahead of the show’s climax . G’iah (Emilia Clarke) and Varra (Charlayne Woodard) meet to deal with...

“Trust no one.” That bit of advice is the cornerstone of every paranoid thriller, whether it’s The X-Files, 70s classics like Three Days of the Condor, or recent entries such as Get Out.
As a show about shape-shifting aliens, Secret Invasion should be able to excel at “trust no one” better than any of its predecessors. Nearly anyone can be a Skrull, even Tony Stark’s best friend Rhodey, a mainstay of the MCU since its beginning (albeit played by different actors).
And yet, four episodes in, Secret Invasion’s biggest mystery is about the nature of the show itself. Is this a thriller about secret agent Nick Fury uncovering a vast conspiracy? Is this a commentary about the insiders and outsiders in the American experiment? Is this a show about spies battling aliens?

One gets the sense that showrunner Kyle Bradstreet wants to say...

Rip to a real one. Talos, one of the best characters Marvel has introduced to the MCU since they began wrapping up the Infinity Saga, is dead. Ben Mendelsohn will certainly not be short of work and never really is; he’s a terrific actor who always gives 100% to any role, and though his time as the gentle Skrull Talos was pretty fleeting, it always seemed to pack a punch. If you’re already missing Mendelsohn’s Australian lilt and disheveled demeanor (I know I am) he’s the lead of a new TV series coming out soon on Apple TV+ called The New Look, where he plays fashion designer Christian Dior opposite Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel. I will be watching!
But for now, we shall draw our attention back to episode four of Secret Invasion, “Beloved”, named after a section of the poem “Late Fragment” by Raymond Carver.

Not much happens in the third episode of Secret Invasion, but “Betrayed” is easily the best instalment of the Marvel show yet. The show got off to a messy, uneven start, but after a much-improved second episode it seems to have hit its stride here, as the relationships between the main players gel together and the fraught nature of their history deepens. This episode also has some of the best lighting and composition I’ve seen in the MCU to date.
In “Betrayed”, little time has passed since the “Nick Fury has a wife!” twist at the end of last week’s episode. To be clear, we’ve known Nick had a wife since Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but we didn’t know she was a Skrull. Their marriage is naturally a mess, with Nick having been thought dead for five years during The Blip,...

The following contains spoilers from the very final scene of Secret Invasion Episode 2, now streaming on Disney+.
This week on Disney+’s Secret Invasion, Nick Fury — at the end of a very long day during which he was (wrongly) blamed for a Moscow bombing and thousands of deaths, and then got fired (from what job, exactly?) by longtime associate James “Rhodey” Rhodes — slipped into a hidden SUV to drive off to a beautiful suburban home, where he was greeted by… his wife Priscilla?

After 15 years and 13 appearances across the various movies and shows of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you might think we know all there is to know about Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. Instead, his role as the shadowy stalwart of S.H.I.E.l.D. means we know barely anything about Nicholas J. – other than he doesn’t like his toast cut diagonally.
With the first episode of Kyle Bradstreet’s Secret Invasion killing off Cobie Smulders’ Agent Maria Hill as the only person who seemed to have any form of relationship with Nick Fury (albeit a cold one), we didn’t expect to find out much more. That all changed with a shocking reveal of Fury’s secret wife at the end of Episode 2.

Marvel wants you to know without a doubt that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is straight.
After spending two episodes in the intimate company of Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos, Fury arrives home at the end of “Secret Invasion” Episode 2 to kiss a human woman. As a credit to both actors, it’s one of the more passionate kisses in the entire MCU — but feels more than a little like overcompensation for Fury’s crackling, outrageous chemistry with Talos (Ben Mendelsohn).
“Secret Invasion” does a lot to fill in the gaps between its timeline and the inciting events of “Captain Marvel,” set more than 30 years earlier — including establishing that Fury and Talos have remained close and been working together to protect both humans and Skrulls. When they reunite on Earth in Episode 1, they put their foreheads together in a universally acknowledged gesture of intimacy that took this reporter’s breath away.

In the second episode of Marvel’s Secret Invasion, “Promises”, we take a trip down memory lane to the 1990s, where a painstakingly de-aged Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) indoctrinates the refugee Skrulls he helped rescue from the Kree into being helpful little human-presenting foot soldiers. It’s nauseating! We know Nick isn’t perfect and how manipulative he can be, but it seems like this series really wants to expose more of what he’s been capable of over the years to get the job done.
We meet a younger version of Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), and see that he is beginning to form a connection with Talos’ daughter, G’iah (Emilia Clarke). Unlike G’iah, Gravik is an orphan, and Nick initially pushes back on recruiting a child soldier to his cause, but it doesn’t take much to convince him. He promises the gathered...

Secret Invasion stars Samuel L. Jackson and Olivia Colman are thrilled to be a part of a very different kind of Marvel story. Their mature espionage thriller dives deeper into Nick Fury, grappling with the Avengers founder’s age and post-blip malaise. His decline is so noticeable that Fury’s inner circle have considerable doubt whether he can do anything to stop the Skrull rebellion that Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Gravik is leading to devastating effect.
“[The bad guy] actually referred to Fury as ‘vapors of himself,’ which is harsh,” Jackson tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So it’s time to reassess or reevaluate who you are, what you’re doing and how you’re doing it. And throughout the course of this series, he finds ways to strengthen himself so that he can be up to the task at hand.”
Colman, who’d been lobbying to join the MCU for years, makes her debut as Sonya Falsworth,...

As a spy story involving the shape-shifting Skrulls, Secret Invasion always presented itself as a twisty adventure in which nothing is what it seems. So while some people were certainly shocked when the first episode of the series ended with the death of Maria Hill, others assumed that the scene would echo CIA Agent Everett K. Ross’s death during the cold open. She would be revealed to be a Skrull and the real Maria Hill would return, probably to save Nick Fury in an exciting set piece.
But the real real Maria Hill has arrived to disabuse us of those hopes. Speaking with Vanity Fair, Hill’s actor Cobie Smulders weighed in on her character’s fate with some disappointing news for anyone writing the above headcanon.

Kingsley Ben-Adir is just as excited as the fans to see Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” finally hit the big screen.
As he caught up with Variety at Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” premiere in Hollywood on Tuesday night, Ben-Adir recalled seeing Ryan Gosling and the rest of the Ken dolls for the first time in full costume.
“We all looked like absolute losers in a funny way,” he shared, adding, “It was hilarious.”
He went on to say that joining the film was a no-brainer after reading Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s script. “From the first page, I was like, ‘Wow, this is really, really funny!'” Ben-Adir said. “I just heard such great things about Ryan and Margot. Then me and Greta went out for some whiskey. We spoke for two or three hours. There was a really strong sense from early on like she was trying to do something a little bit different.

It seems very much like the entire point of Marvel's upcoming "Secret Invasion" series is to craft a big ol' mystery. And anyone who has read the 2008 comic book series that the show is based on can surely understand why. But several months ahead of the premiere of the much-anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe event, the curtain is being pulled back just a bit to tell us more. To that end, we finally know precisely who Emila Clarke ("Game of Thrones") is playing — and it's technically not a new character.
While Marvel and the producers of the show don't feel this bit of info is a spoiler, some fans might, so those who want to go in totally blind, turn back now. That aside, in a big piece for Vanity Fair about the series, it's explained that Clarke's G'iah is a shape-shifting Skrull, just like the ones we met in 2019 "Captain Marvel.
