The film scripted by Rebecca Flinn-White (Period’s Big Adventure) and Zak White (Creepshow) follows Ben (Kalopsis), who is your typical high-school overachiever. They aren’t popular, but they don’t seem to care that much because they have each other.

When the original Valley Girl was released in 1983, most of you weren't even a thought in your parents' imaginations.
Meanwhile, like the Valley Girls themselves, I was a high school senior navigating the chilly waters of teenage acceptance.
Because of that film and its place in history, most of you probably have a better idea of girls from the valley than I did at that time. All we knew of such places came from entertainment, and until the Frank and Moon Zappa song arrived (which very loosely inspired the film), everything from The Valley was as distant as Arabia to a girl from Pittsburgh.
Fast forward an incredible 37 years, and the movie that fascinated a generation and launched the career of Nicolas Cage gets a reboot.
Given my very soft feelings for the original film, the thought of replacing it worried me. And it's a musical, which is not, by any stretch,...

Orion Classics has dropped the first trailer for the musical remake of the 1983 teen romance classic “Valley Girl,” and the distributor has revealed that the film will now hit digital on May 8.
And the first look, is, like, ya know, totally ’80s and rad.
Jessica Rothe and Josh Whitehouse star in “Valley Girl” — which is a remake of the film starring Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman — but this time with a musical take. The film is told as a flashback to the ’80s, with the mom of her own teen girl remembering her life as an ’80s jukebox musical. The trailer itself includes colorful takes on The Go-Go’s and A-Ha and should scratch that ’80s nostalgia itch if you’re still waiting on “Wonder Woman 1984” or the next season of “Stranger Things.”

Film schools have long served as launching pads for film and television careers, and now most major universities offer at least some sort of filmmaking courses, even for those not looking to jump into entertainment. A number of schools have begun looking academically at the impacts of new media on culture and the future of entertainment, but so far the more practical nuts and bolts of web series production and distribution have yet to make it onto into the university course lists. In Los Angeles, two new Web TV education programs have launched this month looking to fill that gap —and at a fraction of a film school tuition. NewMedialocity and Web TV Workshop both offer four-week intro courses for creative types looking to learn how to get an original web series project off the ground. Both take the approach of teaching through experienced guest teachers—those brave souls who...

Although the nominees for the Academy Awards won't be announced until sometime next year, a few of the other award ceremonies are already in full swing including the Independent Spirit Awards, which recognize the best films shot for $20 million or less. This year's Spirit Award nominees were announced earlier today, and I think there are definitely some interesting choices. First off, the big one that everyone is picking up on is the fact that Paranormal Activity was nominated for Best First Feature. And why shouldn't it be? The Blair Witch Project won the exact same award back in 2000. Anvil! The Story of Anvil has been redeemed somewhat for the Oscar snub by getting a nod here for Best Documentary, and surprisingly, Jemaine Clement picked up a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Gentlemen Broncos. Other than that, some of the movies that scored multiple nominations include Precious, (500) Days of Summer,...

See the first poster from Fox Searchlight Pictures' romantic comedy "(500) Days of Summer," starring Zooey Deschanel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Patricia Belcher, Clark Gregg, Geoffrey Arend, Chris Connell and Jennifer Hetrick. Marc Webb makes his feature-length directorial debut on the project produced by Mark Waters, Jessica Tuchinsky, Mason Novick and Steven J. Wolfe. Scott Neustadter and Michael M. Weber wrote the screenplay. This post-modern love story is never what we expect it to be - it's thorny yet exhilarating, funny and sad, a twisted journey of highs and lows that doesn't quite go where we think it will. When Thom, a hapless greeting card copywriter and hopeless romantic is blindsided after his girlfriend summer dumps him, he shifs back and forth through various perdios of their 500 days "togehter" to try to figure out where things went wrong. His reflections ultimately lead him to rediscover his true passions in life. Check out the poster here.

Sundance's 25th year event is remarkably quiet, almost unreal. Allowing a look at the reality, conversations actually can take place. The late night lounge is the place to see everyone after 10 and to talk more. Filmakers Bill Benenson and Eleonore Dailly, producer Gene Rosow and marketer Jeff Dowd hosted the Obama Inauguration party which also celebrated their film Dirt The Movie. Veteran Sundance community members, Nicole Guillemet, former director of Sundance, Paula Silver, Ira Deutschman, Susan Margolin, Todd McCarthy, Sasha Alpert, Mickey Cotrell and so many others bonded with joy as we all listened to the message delivered by President Obama. John Sloss's Cinetic party and William Morris Independent's parties were not as mobbed as in years past. The two films I have heard most praised are Push and The Cove. Latino film buzz is around Sin Nombre. Written and directed by Peter Bratt and starring his brother Benjamin Bratt and Jesse Borrego, La Mission and Don't Let Me Drown starring Yareli Arizmendi, who wrote and produced A Day Without a Mexican, one of the breakout Latino hits some years ago. I would most like to see Mark Stewart's Passing Strange, a Fairfax district Los Angeleno's work about "black folks passing as black folks" and other essentialist curiosities of American life as written up in Sundance Film Festival's Daily Insider of Day 3, Sunday January 18, 2009. Peter Rainer liked Art & Copy and was surprised to learn that it was originally intended as a promotional work of ad agencies. Kirk Honeycutt remarked to Peter Rainer and me how the films are so "lab-worked over". Does the professional finish of a lab make up, improve on or only mask the faults of a filmmaker's first work? Is it like a butterfly being helped to fly (and thereby not developing its own wings) or does it make the beginning filmmaker better? Mary Jane Skalski is here with two films, Dare and Against the Current. Steven J. Wolfe, who has worked on 35 films and has produced five with Jennifer Tilley, who is now playing professional poker, had his film 500 Days of Summer already placed with Fox Searchlight for U.S. and the world, so he was able to enjoy Sundance after 10 years absence from it. Senator picked up North American rights to Brooklyn's Finest. Visit Films picked up worldwide rights to Sundance world doc competition film Kimjongilia]and Spectrum title, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle. The Canadian distribution rights to Cold Souls have been acquired by E1 Films. Opening night film Max and Mary was a huge success and well attended by acquisition and studio executives. Twentieth Century Fox had a team of 8, Lionsgate's Tom Ortenberg, Steve Beeks and Jason Constantine were there along with every other buyer. The film that landed with Icon when Icon acquired Becker International will soon announce a North American distribution deal. CinemaVault acquired international rights for Spectrum film Lymelife which originally premiered at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival and was picked up for US shortly after by Screen Media. Stephen Raphael is working on the U.S. marketing for the film. HBO has acquired TV rights to Burma VJ the hit of November’s IDFA whose North American debut was Saturday at Sundance. The the film will open theatrically at New York’s Film Forum in May, well ahead of its early 2010 HBO television debut. [Sony Classics acquired North American rights acquisition of Rudo Y Cursi having its U.S. premiere at Sundance.

NEW YORK -- Lesley Ann Warren is teaming with an ensemble cast that includes Jack Klugman, Michael Lerner, Shiri Appleby and Mili Avital for Twin Falls Idaho producer Steven J. Wolfe's indie feature When Do We Eat. Eat revolves around a Passover seder at which the family patriarch is slipped a dose of Ecstasy by one of his kids, "igniting conflict and chaos on the way to healing and redemption," the filmmakers said. The comedy -- by helmer Salvador Litvak -- also features Ben Feldman, Max Greenfield, Adam Lamberg, Meredith Scott Lynn and Cynda Williams. Nina Davidovich Litvak penned the screenplay. Amy Salko Robertson is serving as co-producer. Said Wolfe: "The fun of this film was putting together the perfect dysfunctional family. When you combine such well-respected actors as Michael Lerner, Lesley Ann Warren and the legendary Jack Klugman with such an unbelievably gifted ensemble, the humor and comic timing on the set each day makes it hard to feel like you're really at work." The film is shooting in Los Angeles. Warren is repped by Innovative Artists and Acronym Entertainment.
