It is set in a distant, utopian future, but ever since the original series Star Trek has sought to hold a mirror to contemporary political and moral dilemmas.
In documentary series The Center Seat: Celebrating 55 Years of Star Trek, now available in the UK on IMDb TV, director Brian Volk-Weiss looks at how the show commented on issues such as the Cold War, Vietnam, Civil Rights, and the issue of euthanasia, among others. But as Volk-Weiss points out, there is one issue that has loomed over the Star Trek universe since its inception.
“We talk about this in Center Seat a little bit, all Trekkies know the foundation of Star Trek, in canon, the Federation and Starfleet, everybody’s known since the original series the foundation of those organisations is World War III,” Volk-Weiss says.

Heartbreak swept through the Star Trek community last night as we learned that Rene Auberjonois had passed away at the age of 79 after suffering from lung cancer. The actor is best remembered to fans of the franchise for his performance as Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and thanks to his place in the Trek world, he was a well-loved part of the family and his fellow stars poured onto social media last night to honor and pay tribute to their late friend.
First of all, William Shatner may not have played Captain Kirk opposite Auberjonois’ Odo but the pair were still firm friends off-camera and The Original Series legend took to Twitter to say he would always cherish the “wonderful friendship” they shared.
I have just heard about the death of my friend and fellow actor @reneauberjonois. To sum up his life in a tweet is nearly impossible.

Ira Steven Behr’s Star Trek labor of love is finally available to the general public. Here’s what you need to know...
If you’re a hardcore Trekkie, you probably already know about What We Left Behind; the crowd-funded documentary that looks back on the legacy of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. And if, you don’t, the best way to describe the doc is that it’s a snapshot of a particular fandom, curated by someone who helped create that fandom in the first place.
Producer and showrunner Ira Steven Behr wasn’t the creator of Deep Space Nine (that would be Rick Berman and the late Michael Piller), but, he certainly is the biggest advocate of the series these days. In What We Left Behind (a riff on the show’s series finale titled “What You Leave Behind"), Behr interviews the expansive cast, crew,...

Following the news of Rutger Hauer’s death, celebrities took to social media to remember the Dutch actor.
Hauer died July 19 after a short illness at the age of 75. Celebrities shared quotes, photos and gifs showcasing the actor’s most famous role, such as the villainous John Ryder in the 1986 thriller “The Hitcher,”Captain Navarre in the 1985 film “LadyHawke” and perhaps his most famous performance as replicant Roy Batty in the sci-fi film “Blade Runner.”
Guillermo del Toro pointed to “Flesh and Blood,” “Eureka,” “The Hitcher,” “Blade Runner,” “Ladyhawke” and “Blind Fury” as some of his favorite Hauer roles. “Rip the great Rutger Hauer: an intense, deep, genuine and magnetic actor that brought truth, power and beauty to his films,” he wrote.

Warning: If “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” was a seminal show for you in the ’90s, the documentary “What We Left Behind” will probably make you cry. The platonic ideal of a loving tribute, this crowdfunded documentary directed by “DS9” showrunner Ira Steven Behr and “The Captains” producer David Zappone gathers nearly every key member of the “DS9” family to look back on arguably “Trek’s” most progressive and game-changing series.
Behr puts himself front and center in the documentary, breaking the fourth wall periodically as a quasi-narrator and guide through “DS9’s” legacy. Full of touches that will invoke memories of the show’s most iconic moments (including a hysterical post-credits gag or two), “What We Left Behind” is almost like Behr’s memoir of the making of the show, albeit with a ton of familiar faces popping in to add their two cents.
Only Avery Brooks, who played...

Did you catch all of these Star Trek references in "Saints of Imperfection"?
The fifth episode of Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 is perhaps the most exciting episode of the new season so far, which is saying something! Not only does a beloved character return, the episode seems to conclude in a way that feels like its setting up the rest of the season.
And, with all of this stuff going on, there are also more than a few huge references to the existing canon of Trek, most of which were huge surprises. From Tyler’s The Next Generation tech to The Original Series planets getting named-dropped, here’s what it all means.

CBS’ “Elementary” will come to an end with its upcoming seventh season, an individual with knowledge of the decision tells TheWrap.
No premiere date has been set for the Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu-led drama’s final batch of episodes, though an insider tells us the modern-day take on Sherlock Holmes and Watson is coming to a predetermined and natural conclusion with those final installments. All 13 episodes for the season have already been filmed.
Since its debut in 2012, “Elementary” has been shuffled around the CBS schedule and most recently aired its sixth season over the summer, wrapping up with a 0.5 rating among adults 18-49 and just over 3 million total viewers, though it aired its finale against the Primetime Emmys.

CBS’ modern Sherlock Holmes series Elementary will see a seventh season. Like with another just renewed veteran drama that had been on the bubble, Criminal Minds, CBS the network would not say whether it would be the series’ final season. There is no word yet on the fate of medical drama Code Black.
Elementary has not been a strong linear performer the last couple of seasons but it remains a major profit generator for CBS with lucrative off-network and international deals.
Last season, Elementary averaged so-so 7.4 million viewers, 1.2 in 18-49 Live+7 in the Sunday 10 Pm time slot. Elementary has off-network and Svod deals with Wgn America, Hulu Plus and broadcast stations that fetch in as much as $3 million total per episode. It is a solid international seller for CBS TV Studios too, in part because of the central character’s global recognition. In May 2016, CBS Corp. CEO Les Moonves used...

The series also starred David Walton, Elliott Gould, Linda Lavin, Liza Lapira, Matt Murray, and Albert Tsai. Feuerstein executive produces along with his wife Dana Klein, Aaron Kaplan, Wendi Trilling, Dana Honor and Pamela Fryman.

Just as there’s more TV than ever these days, viewers are also much more savvy to how this Golden Age operates. That’s partly thanks to social media, which helped democratize the TV process. For example, this month veteran TV writer/producer Robert Hewitt Wolfe started a conversation on Twitter that became, as Twitter itself now defines it, a “moment.” In an 11-part thread, he shared a number of writers’ room terms that he and other scribes have used over the years. They range from logical to absurd, depending on your knowledge of the TV landscape.
Take a “Gilligan Cut,” which Wolfe defined as follows:
"Gilligan Cut" Aka "A Gilligan" – A cut that reverses or undermines what's been set up in the previous scene. Example: "Don't worry about Gilligan. He knows that jungle like the back of his hand." Cut To: Gilligan sinking into quicksand. #TVWriting 2/?

Harry Potter, Twin Peaks, Alan Partridge, Lost and even Mr Bean: we salute 'in-universe' books...
On November 17th, the new Harry Potter-verse movie Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them hit cinemas as start of what Warner Bros hopes will be a new and long-lived chapter for the franchise. Considering Harry Potter was considered "over" by its chief writer (except for the website, and the play… and now this…) it’s quite the achievement for Warner to have found a way to continue it in a way that does, at least, feel creatively valid.
Of course, Fantastic Beasts was a book originally released as a Comic Relief special in 2001 alongside Quidditch Through The Ages. Purporting to be written by Newt Scamander (the eventual protagonist of the movie), the edition as published claimed to be Harry Potter’s own copy, as annotated by Ron Weasley. Elementary, Season 2: Episode 22 – “Paint It Black”
Written by Robert Hewitt Wolfe
Directed by Lucy Liu
Airs Thursday nights at 10 on CBS
There is a certain poignancy to Jonny Lee Miller’s version of Sherlock Holmes in how he acts tough when he is at his most vulnerable. When we saw his reunion with Moriarty earlier this season, it made sense that the easiest way for Sherlock to have to interact with that person was by using biting sarcasm and almost immature name-calling. The same thing goes for how he handles his brother, Mycroft, in “Paint It Black” (which continues what looks to be a four-episode, season-ending arc for Elementary). Thinking that Mycroft is the person solely responsible for the danger Joan is in, he throws it out there that he wishes Mycroft’s potentially terminal illness had killed him. It’s what Sherlock does when he doesn’t know...

Welcome to day three of Star Trek Week! Today we’ll focus on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9) which was the last series Gene Roddenberry had knowledge of. He sadly passed away in 1991, two years before the premiere, but he was aware that series creators Rick Berman and Michael Piller were moving ahead with it.
DS9 brought a big change to the pre-existing Star Trek shows, instead of taking place on a starship as the others had, DS9 took place on a space station near the planet Bajor. Also a large number of the main and recurring characters were not members of Starfleet so the overall tone ended up being a lot darker compared to its predecessors. The series premiered on January 3, 1993 with “Emmisary” and would go on for seven seasons with a total of 176 episodes before concluding on June 2, 1999 with “What You Leave Behind”.

As we’ve been reporting, Syfy had its Upfront presentation to potential advertisers Wednesday night, and they spent yesterday issuing press releases. It’s a good thing they held the event at a pier, as there is a boatload of information included in the summary press release below. We made sure to get it posted before the weekend, since it will take you the entire weekend to absorb it all.
Some of it is information we’ve already posted, like the Ringworld and Childhood’s End development and the High Moon pilot production, some of it we posted about fairly recently, like Ronald D. Moore‘s Helix, some of it we haven’t heard about in quite some time, like Orion, Proof, and Dominion, and some, like the nonscripted shows, the anthology, and some of the projects announced, are news to us.
You’ll also see ratings info and other...

Star Trek is pretty much unique when it comes to fan-made movies and episodes that pay homage to the sci-fi series. Left alone by CBS and Paramount (as long as they don’t try to make money from them) fans build elaborate sets and even bring in recognisable Star Trek actors to produce work that is anything but amateur.
The latest hoping to go into production is Star Trek: Renegades, co-written by Jack Trevino and staring Walter Koenig, Tim Russ, Garrett Wang and Robert Picardo among others, names that will be familiar to any Star Trek fan.
Jack Trevino is no stranger to the world of Star Trek. Having written the hugely popular fan-made miniseries Star Trek: Of Gods And Men which stared a number of Star Trek actors including Walter Koenig and Nichelle Nichols. The series was awarded ‘Best Web Production 2008’ by SyFy Portal which is now Alpha Airlock.

Alphas Review, Season 2, Episode 9, “The Devil Will Drag You Under”
Written by Robert Hewitt Wolfe
Directed by Matt Hastings
Airs Mondays at 8pm (Et) on SyFy
In the old-school world of genre television, most shows tended to find their way near the end of the first season. Even sci-fi classics like Stargate Sg-1 and Farscape had inconsistent opening years and really took off near the end of that 22-episode run. Today, many series operate with shorter groups of episodes that usually land around 13. They are better planned up front, but growing pains can still appear at the outset. Alphas’ opening year had only 10 episodes, but it did a solid job building the characters and creating their world. The second season has expanded the scope and improved on the solid foundation. It’s now reached that point where the character building is ready to pay off in the best way possible.

Alphas Review, Season 2, Episode 1, “Wake Up Call”
Written by Robert Hewitt Wolfe
Directed by Matt Hastings
Airs Mondays at 10 pm (Et) on SyFy
When Alphas premiered last July, it drew comparisons to Heroes with its characters learning to cope with extraordinary abilities. While it lacked the grand ambitions of the fallen NBC series, it compensated with more heart and an excellent lead performance. Veteran character actor David Strathairn (Limbo, Good Night and Good Luck) brings a surprising weight to Dr. Lee Rosen that enhances the drama. The world-weary guy doesn’t have powers, but the neurologist/psychologist has worked for years to help these “Alphas” handle their skills. His team includes strong man Bill (Malik Yoba), ultimate sharp shooter Cameron (Warren Christie), mental influencer Nina (Laura Mennell), sense-heightener Rachel (Azita Ghanizada), and the autistic but hyperkinetic Gary (Ryan Cartwright). They’re an oddly matched team of heroes but work together...

Earlier today, reported on the news that Syfy would be adapting Stephen King’s The Eyes of the Dragon. Syfy has officially announced that project as part of their new development slate, which includes 28 new scripted and reality projects:

Syfy is having its Upfront tonight, during which they present their schedule and slate of projects in development to potential advertisers, and the announcements are flowing. An adaptation of a Stephen King novel into a miniseries, a new Charlaine Harris weekly series, a great movie being adapted into a weekly series, and a whole load of new reality shows may be in our future. Where to begin? We’ll break this down into manageable bites, but have included the entire press release below for your study.
First up, new series! We’ve already told you about some of these, but now we’re getting official word. For scripted series, Syfy is now confirming that Defiance, the series that will affect and be affected by the game of the same name, will be coming in 2013.
All other new series on or soon to be on the schedule are unscripted/reality shows – eight of em!

So what's next for the channel that has given us plenty of things that have gone bump in the night along with more CG monsters than anyone could possibly keep up with? Read on for details of Syfy's "upfront" presentation.
As you'd expect from a network named Syfy, several of these projects are more sci-fi than horror, but we thought we'd pass on all the news anyway:

Syfy has made a lot of project announcements over the years, and most of them never make it to the screen. But there is some hope that the latest untitled project from writer and producer Robert Hewitt Wolfe will take Syfy right back to space. Universal Cable Productions said it's working with Wolfe on a show set in a postwar era on the Starship Defender looking for lost worlds requiring law and order. The ship is helmed by humans and trans-humans, who don't get along very well, as part of the newly formed Unity Democracy. Wolfe has been an executive or co-executive producer on shows like "Alphas" and "Dresden Files" for Syfy, as well as a consulting producer on shows like "The Gates" and "The 4400." He was a producer on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," writing more than 30 episodes of ...

Crime Scene Pictures partners Adam Ripp and Rob Paris will partner with Nick Wechsler on Man With a Gun, a Robert Hewitt Wolfe-scripted action thriller. They’ve just set up the picture for Crime Scene to fully finance, and they’ll talk it up here to get a director and a foreign sales agent. The title character, Ike Bell, is a gunslinger on a personal mission to gut the participants in a drug war that has plagued a U.S. border town for generations. He infiltrates both sides and takes out operatives on his way to a fateful showdown with the warring kingpins. One is an American sheriff, the other a monstrous cross-dressing woman. Wechsler will produce with Ripp and Paris, Rizal Risjad and Philip Elway will be exec producers and Lizzy Bradford will co-produce. They will have their package ready for Berlin in February and start production next year.

Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.

Alphas debuts on Space and Syfy on July 11
New sci-fi series Alphas makes its debut on Space and Syfy this month and it sounds like it’s not going to be kid’s stuff. That much was suggested by executive producer Ira Steven Behr when he spoke to reporters about the show last week. Behr was asked how the show compared with Eureka and Warehouse 13, two light-hearted sci-fi series that will also air on Mondays on Syfy.
“We have a lot of humor in our show, but our episodes do tend at times to be darker in their plotlines,” Behr is quoted as saying by The Morton Report. “We’re the 10:00 o’clock show and I think we deserve to be. That said, I do feel that we all share this kind of character-driven humor, and obviously we’re all ensemble shows. So we have similarities and some strong differences.

As expected, ABC has cancelled The Gates after one season on the air. The ratings certainly didn't dictate a second season and a couple weeks ago, series star Frank Grillo said that he'd heard unofficially that the show wouldn't be back.
Though even actress Lindsay Lohan wanted to see it return, it's now been confirmed that The Gates has indeed been cancelled. Some of the people connected with the show have tweeted about the series' passing.
From the show's Twitter feed comes, "We would like to thank our followers for sticking with us through this great journey."
Gates creator Richard Hatem wrote simply, "Thanks to everyone who loved it. DVD set to be released...someday?"

SyFy, or SyMeh as I've taken to referring to it (thanks Sam), is rebooting their own Riverworld this weekend, and it actually looks like something worth tuning in for. Sure, Megapiranha is completely dumb fun, but in the end it's the dumb part we need less of and the fun part everyone wants SyFy to increase. Will this Sunday's Riverworld series be that vehicle?
SyFy tried to get Riverworld going as a show a few years back. The popular novel series, about what happens when every human in history wakes up on an alien world engineered to be one, giant river, was adapted in 2003 for a possible series. The series never came together, apparently budget and production issues were never completely ironed out, so only a middlin' pilot episode was made.

Looking for a sneak peek at Syfy's new mini-series Riverworld, starring Dollhouse's Tahmoh Penikett? You're in luck. Distributor Rhi has released the first trailer for the mini-series (itself a backdoor pilot for an ongoing series), which also stars Laura Vandervoort, Mark Deklin, Peter Wingfield, and Alan Cumming, among others. The project was written by Robert Hewitt Wolfe (The Dresden Files) and directed by Stuart Gillard (90210). Here's how Syfy described the four-hour mini-series: "Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica/Dollhouse) and Laura Vandervoort (Smallville) star in Riverworld, based on the popular award-winning series of novels by Philip Jose Farmer. Penikett stars as Matt Ellman, an American war zone reporter who has witnessed the worst of humanity first-hand yet still grasps on to an optimistic spirit. When a suicide bomber kills both Matt and his fiance Jessie, played by Vandervoort, they awaken, separated in a mysterious world where everyone who has ever lived on Earth,...

Word from scifiwire (syfywyre?) is that the network has made the strange decision to greenlight a new two part mini-series based on the "Riverworld" novels by the late Phillip Jose Farmer. Why is this strange you ask? Well, because they already made a mini-series based on the Riverworld novels in 2003. That production failed to ignite any interest in a Riverworld series so it seems odd that they would try again.
I only bring this up because I actually sort of liked the first Riverworld book as well as the first mini-series and would love to see it brought to the small screen again. It has a fantastic premise and could easily be popular if the makers gave it a Twilight Zone meets Lost sort of vibe. However, the new mini is being directed by Stuart Gillard (90210) and written by Robert Hewitt Wolfe (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) so the jury...
