Screen Media has acquired all North American rights to “The Locksmith,” an upcoming action-thriller starring Ryan Phillippe, Kate Bosworth and Ving Rhames.
The film was directed by Nicolas Harvard, a veteran first assistant director whose credits include “Hell or High Water” and “Whiplash.” It marks his feature directorial debut. Screen Media is planning a day-and-date, theatrical and on-demand release later this year.
In “The Locksmith,” Miller (Phillippe), an ex-con recently released from prison for a bungled robbery, tries to walk a straight line and work his way back into the lives of his ex, Beth (Bosworth), a police detective, and their young daughter. Miller tries to avoid slipping back the underworld with the help of an old friend (Rhames). However, he finds his past will not stay in the past, forcing him to commit one last crime before he can truly walk away.

“When Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from troubled dreams, he found himself changed into a monstrous cockroach in his bed.”

So goes the first line in Franz Kafka’s classic short story, Metamorphosis - a tiny, existential drama subject to all kinds of interpretations since its publication in 1915. Even that famous opening line is open to interpretation, as this Guardian piece points out: did Kafka really mean that poor, unfortunate Gregor woke up as a cockroach, another kind of insect, or something else entirely? The German phrase he uses, “Ungeheuren Ungeziefer” loosely translates to “enormous vermin.”
Whatever Gregor becomes, it’s something pitiful and helpless; he can no longer work, and gradually, he’s shunned by his own family.

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. Chances are, you've already made plans to see the Nine Lives movie with all your friends and family. For all I know, you're probably in line to see it right now. It has everything any movie needs. Giant buildings. Christopher Walken. Cats. And if that doesn't sell you, none of what I'm about to tell you will sell you either. Technically, I worked on this script. This would be news to anyone involved, and it really is a technicality. In the screenwriter profession, a lot of screenwriters — not all, but a lot — have their own writing groups amongst friends where we share what we are working on and give each other notes. In fact, sometimes we even go on retreats. Such was the case when my friends Matt Allen...

Exclusive: In a pre-emptive mid-six- against seven-figure deal, Universal has acquired an untitled action comedy pitch for Chris Morgan Productions, I’ve learned. Matt Allen and Chris Borrelli will pen the script based on their pitch — whose logline is being kept tightly under wraps. However, I’m told by a person close to the project that it has the potential of becoming an action comedy tentpole. Both writers have a long relationship with Fast & Furious franchise writer Morgan. He’ll produce via his Universal-based banner.
Borrelli and Allen’s stars have been steadily rising. Borrelli recently collaborated with Morgan on Lionsgate’s The Vatican Tapes with Borrelli writing the script and the two producing alongside Chris Cowles and Lakeshore Entertainment. It hits theaters February 27.

[1] Earlier this month, a in-house promotional teaser trailer leaked [2] for Soul Surfer, a drama about young, teenage surfer girl (played by Bridge To Terabithia/Race To Witch Mountain's AnnaSophia Robb) who "summons the courage to go back into the ocean after losing an arm in a shark attack." When I posted the teaser, I was kind of weirded out that it contained no hint of a shark attack -- the teaser made it out like the film is just a happy-go-lucky story about a teenage girl surfer. The new full length trailer which has premiered on EW [3] (via FirstShowing [4]) gives audiences the full reveal of what this story is really about. That and a really cheesy speech from Carrie Underwood. Written and directed by Sean McNamara (Bring it On: Fight To The Finish, Into The Blue 2: The Reef, Bratz, 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain), the film co-starring Dennis Quaid,...

Two weeks ago, we heard news that a pregnancy guidebook, What to Expect When You're Expecting, is being turned into a film. In my response, I predicted that we'd also eventually get an adaptation of the book's sequel, What to Expect: The First Year. But now it seems someone will beat Lionsgate to the punch on that idea, because DreamWorks is already developing a movie based on a parenting guide.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio bought the rights to an upcoming book called Eat, Sleep, Poop: A Common Sense Guide to Your Baby's First Year. The guide will be adapted by Four Christmases scribes Matt Allen and Caleb Wilson as a comedy (as opposed to a horror film, which some of us might presume it to be). And just so you know, this has some prestige attached: three-time Oscar-nominee Walter F. Parkes (Awakenings) is producing with Laurie MacDonald...

Chicago – How has Vince Vaughn become one of the most boring actors in America? It has little to do with his performances and everything to do with his career choices. Sure, Vaughn has pretty much made a habit out of playing the exact same guy since “Wedding Crashers”: a fast-talking, self-absorbed, overgrown adolescent whose funniest quips are delivered under the breath and between punch-lines. Since you’re never sure what will come out of his mouth next, he’s consistently entertaining to watch, but the vehicles he chooses have become increasingly uninspired.
Blu-Ray Rating: 1.5/5.0
“Four Christmases” is a particularly obnoxious holiday offering, primarily because its filmmakers are convinced that they’ve created something that people can relate to. The film centers on a couple who routinely make up excuses to avoid spending the holidays with family. But when they enter the airport on their way to Fiji (foreshadowing Vaughn...

Facts of interest: Gordon also directed "The King of Kong."
The plot: Every year, Kate and Brad go on vacation to avoid spending Christmas with their families. This year however, they accidentally find themselves paying a visit to all of them.
Our thoughts: Seth Gordon’s “Four Christmases” is not exactly a glorious feast, but then again, the movie isn’t that terrible either. The film’s story line is forgettable and most of the gags are too cheap to really impress, but a fast-paced plot and a bunch of refreshing performances make it a lot easier to sit through this comedy than expected.

This is how uninspired I am by November: it’s taken me till halfway through the month to tell you how “psyched” I am for what they’re offering us to kick off the holiday season. How depressing is that? I found 3 to be truly excited about, but I’m having to fake it a bit for these last 2. Here’s 5 reasons why I’d like to be excited about No. 5 (but am having trouble with): Four Christmases [opens wide November 26]. 1. I love Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, I think they’re both very funny, and I’m eager to see what kind of comedic chemistry they have together. On the other hand, the trailer (watch it at the official site) seems to indicate that the “humor” is mostly of the pratfall and general debasement variety. I’d love for this not to be Meet the Parents Times Four, but somehow I...

Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn-starrer dramedy "Four Christmases" has just uncovered its first trailer. An elaboration from the previously-released TV spot, the trailer brings viewers into the craziness the main characters, Kate and Brad, have to deal with from each of their four families. Meeting their estranged parents' family, the pair faces obnoxious brothers, mother's boy toy and throwing-up babies as well.
A Christmas-themed movie from New Line Cinema, "Christmases" follows a young couple who has managed to spend their Christmas Day with their families for years. This time, they have planned to have a tropical vacation. But, in a twisting event, all planes leaving the city are canceled and their families find out about it. Now, they have to bear one Christmas day with their estranged parents and their new families going from one household to another.

Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon are in final negotiations to star in New Line Cinema's comedy Four Christmases.
In the film, Vaughn and Witherspoon will play a couple who struggle to visit all four of their divorced parents' homes during the Christmas holidays.
The project is based on a screenplay by Matt Allen and Caleb Wilson. Producing are Spyglass Entertainment's Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum and Jon Glickman. Vaughn and Witherspoon also will produce.
A director is not yet attached to the project, which is expected to be produced for release during fourth-quarter 2008.
New Line production president Toby Emmerich and production executives Mark Kaufman and Michael Disco will oversee the project for the company.
Christmases originally was picked up as a spec and set up at Sony Pictures, which eyed it for holiday release in 2004, but the project was put into turnaround when it conflicted with another holiday comedy, Revolution's Christmas With the Kranks. New Line picked it up in the fall with Adam Shankman attached to direct.
