When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), “Ford v Ferrari” (2020), “Dune” (2022) and last year’s champ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. A slew of winners — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019) and 2021 winner “Sound of Metal.” Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by...

Indiana Jones has fought a lot of screen villains: Nazis, assassins, evil high priests, corrupt rich douchebags, Cate Blanchett, Cate Blanchett’s hair. Yet Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny — the fifth movie to feature Harrison Ford’s globetrotting, snake-hating, whip-cracking, fedora-rocking archeology professor — pits our man Indy against the single greatest nemesis he’s ever faced: time.
Oh, there’s a ton of Nazis here too, trust us. Ditto some shady government agents, a racist redneck, a henchman roughly the size and width of a redwood, a Moroccan kingpin with a scimitar,...

The stir over photos showing him and politicians maskless over the weekend are much ado about nothing, Johnson said on Friday during Apple TV Plus’ portion of the Television Critics Assn. press tour. Johnson was there to promote “They Call Me Magic,” a new four-part docuseries that premieres on April 22.
“I wore my mask in, I wore my mask out,” Johnson said. “The photos were the photos. Those two guys, Governor Newsom had his mask on, we took the photo. Mayor Garcetti had his mask on and we took the photo, that’s it.”
Johnson experienced a media stir earlier this week, after he posted photos of himself with California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti while not wearing masks in a private suite at SoFi Stadium. Johnson, Newsom, Garcetti, San Francisco mayor London Breed and others were watching the NFC championship game, which the Los Angeles Rams eventually won vs.

Last night saw an under the radar precursor give out its prizes, which in turn may have shifted one of the Oscar categories. Yes, Friday evening saw the American Cinema Editors give out their annual Ace Eddie awards. This yearly event usually can clue us in to what the frontrunners for Best Film Editing at the Academy Awards are. That may well be the case again here, though if that’s true, the Academy and its voters are going to be making an usual choice. They already did in terms of their nominees in the category though, so I suppose this is just par for the course… In a bit of a surprise, the award for Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) went to John Ottman for his work on Bohemian Rhapsody. Ottman won in an upset over Barry Alexander Brown for BlacKkKlansman, Jay Cassidy for A Star Is Born, Tom Cross for First Man,...

It was a busy morning for precursor awards today, wasn’t it? Not only are we still recovering from what went on at the Golden Globes last night, a quartet of important stepping stones to Oscar announced their nominees. The nominations came from the Ace Eddies (the Guild for film editors), the American Society of Cinematographers (the Guild for cinematography), the Art Directors Guild, and of course, the Writers Guild. The latter, as usual, had disqualified some high profile contenders, so that’s important to keep in mind, but the former three have given us a decent look at the likeliest Academy Award nominees in Best Production Design and Best Film Editing, respectively. The four precursors represented Guilds that actually correspond with Academy members, so keep that in mind. Ace Eddie and Adg separate into multiple categories, so that’s worth making note of, as well. Also, as you might imagine,...

Chicago – Biggie Smalls deserves better than ‘Notorious’. It’s not that there’s anything drastically wrong with this reasonably well-made and very well-performed biopic but it’s a by-the-numbers, predictable film about an icon who was simply one of the best that ever lived. The ‘Big Poppa’ who could ‘Hypnotize’ with his rhymes should have more than an average biopic.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 The problem with “Notorious” is simple - if you care enough about The Notorious B.I.G. to watch a movie about his life than you will learn absolutely nothing from the film. It hits all of the major points - his drug-dealing youth, supportive mother, relationships with Faith Evans and Lil Kim, partnership with Puff Daddy, rivalry with Tupac, the two shootings, roll credits. If Scholastic had published the 1864 Jules Verne classic, it might have resembled "Journey to the Center of the Earth," a kid-friendly telling of the oft-filmed sci-fi yarn.
Shot implementing a 3-D process that's easy on the eyeballs and a lighter touch that ensures things don't get too intense for younger adventurers, this first feature by veteran visual effects supervisor Eric Brevig has its transporting, if benign, charms.
Granted the other-worldly excursion has that prefab, carefully calibrated feel of a theme park ride. The New Line & Walden Media presentation, which premiered during the weekend at the Los Angeles Film Festival, should play well with its targeted family demographic, especially in RealD-equipped theaters.
Where Verne's original novel started out in Germany and the 1959 James Mason-Pat Boone version was set in Scotland, the junior edition takes place in America (technically Montreal), where Brendan Fraser's Trevor Anderson is a college professor and expert in the field of plate tectonics.
Anderson and his brother Max also had been on the verge of a major geological breakthrough prior to the latter's disappearance in an expedition in Iceland years earlier.
Now, Anderson and his brother's teenage son, Sean (Josh Hutcherson), attempt to pick up his trail with the help of a pretty Icelandic mountain guide (Anita Briem) and a dog-eared copy of the Verne novel.
Director Brevig -- working from a serviceable if safe on the surface script credited to Michael Weiss and the busy team of Jennifer Flackett & Mark Levin -- keeps things moving along at a pleasant clip (with the help of a trio of editors) while coaxing amiably energetic performances out of his three leads.
He also manages to steer clear of most of those hoary, "comin'-at-ya"-type 3-D cliches in his use of the flexible Fusion System process developed by James Cameron and cinematographer Vince Pace, instead relying on the added dimension to heighten the hyper-real imagery, overseen by visual effects supervisor Christopher Townsend.
Wonder if he saved enough unused footage for that theme ride?
