For the most part, horror franchises tend to center around a singular entity like a masked slasher, recognizable monster, defiant survivor, or a specific location. And then there's the "Final Destination" franchise, a series of films that has continued to thrive without easily merchandised iconography or the same stable of characters returning each time that are instead connected by the premise that no matter who we are, where we're from, or what we do ... death is going to get us one way or another.
It's a morbid thought, sure, but one that has more basis in reality than men who just won't die, serial killer-possessed dolls, dream predators, Bdsm hell demons, rural cannibal families, torturous masterminds with a legion of acolytes, or supernatural entities. Death is coming for us all, and the only difference is when and how it's going to happen. As the mortician Bludworth (Tony Todd) explains in...

Directed by David R. Ellis, who previously directed Final Destination 2, from a script written by Eric Bress (who worked on the script for Final Destination 2), The Final Destination has the following synopsis: While enjoying a day at the track, Nick O’Bannon has a horrific premonition of his friends and him all dying in a freak accident involving many racecars. The Dance of the Dead episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Did you ever wonder what it would be like if the zombie apocalypse coincided with prom night? The dead rising from their graves, calling out for brains. Disrupting the school event that’s supposed to be a great, memorable moment in a teen’s life. That’s what happens in the 2008 film Dance of the Dead (watch it Here). Which would have been a great sequel to The Return of the Living Dead if it were part of that franchise. And if you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Although Dance of the Dead was released in 2008, the first draft of the screenplay was written eleven years earlier.

Expanded from the 2016 short of the same name, Broadcast Signal Intrusion stars Harry Shum Jr. as James, a bereaved video archivist who, while logging tapes of old TV broadcasts, comes across a surreal and disturbing clip of a masked entity. He believes it’s the product of broadcast signal hacking, but his discovery takes a sinister turn when he tracks down similar broadcast intrusions that turn his mission even more rabbit-hole obsessive.
Ok, let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way first. Yes, Broadcast Signal Intrusion is Remarkably similar to Brian De Palma’s Blow Out, and to a lesser extent the 2021 horror Sinister. "Say someone did hide a message in those tapes - do you really want to be the guy to figure out what that means?" Lightbulb Film in the UK has revealed another full UK trailer for their release of the indie mystery horror-thriller Broadcast Signal Intrusion, made by filmmaker Jacob Gentry. This originally premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival and opened last fall in the US (it's out now to watch in the US only if you to check it out). The film lands in UK cinemas this March. In the late 90s, a video archivist unearths a series of sinister pirate broadcasts that took over antenna TV signals, and he becomes obsessed with uncovering the conspiracy behind them, while wondering if any of this might connect to the disappearance of his wife years ago. Harry Shum Jr. stars as James, with an indie cast including Chris Sullivan, Kelley Mack,...

"Only the creepiest unsolved mystery hack of all-time." Dark Sky Films has unveiled an official trailer for the mysterious lo-fi tech thriller Broadcast Signal Intrusion, which first premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. In the late 90s, a video archivist unearths a series of sinister pirate broadcasts and becomes obsessed with uncovering the dark conspiracy behind them. This isn't actually a "sci-fi" film, because it's set in the 90s and all the technology in it is real, and some of the pirate broadcasts referenced actually happened (you can read about them for real). The only fiction in this is the noir mystery that James tries to solve by attempting to figure out what these broadcasts mean and if they have any connection to the disappearance of his wife. Harry Shum Jr. stars as James, with a cast including Chris Sullivan, Kelley Mack, Steve Pringle, and Justin Welborn.

It’s tricky to pull off the kind of cryptic mystery labyrinth that “Broadcast Signal Intrusion” attempts, and Jacob Gentry’s film only works to a point — whatever point at which the viewer decides this thriller’s elusive menace is just too vague to generate sufficient urgency or suspense. As long as the promise outweighs the frustrating lack of payoff, however, it’s an intriguing and atmospheric puzzle, with “Glee” star Harry Shum Jr. chasing down a possible link between the titular phenomenon and his wife’s disappearance. The SXSW-premiering feature will be a viable item for home format sales; theatrical prospects are slimmer.

It’s hard to believe that it’s already time for the SXSW Film Festival once again, but here we are. For the 2021 iteration of the fest, SXSW is going virtual, which gives more people the opportunity to get to experience their brilliant lineup of films this year. As someone who is already well into my SXSW viewings for this year, I can confidently say that this might be SXSW’s best slate of Midnighters from top to bottom, and a few other genre and genre-adjacent films that are premiering in other sections are very much worth your time as well.
So, if you’re looking to check out some excellent horror and sci-fi cinema during this year’s SXSW from the comfort of your own home, here are 15 different projects you’ll definitely want to make time for. Oh, and because I included both How it Ends and Violation during my Sundance 2021 preview,...

Make no mistake about it: this was a great year for horror fans. It was so good, in fact, that making a list of “favorites” is almost impossible because there’s just too much I want to talk about. The independent horror scene continues to crank out new classics and minor gems, but even studio horror was good this year: The Conjuring 2, Don’t Breathe, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Lights Out (not my bag, but a lot of people really enjoyed it), The Boy (not a lot of people’s bag, but I really enjoyed it), The Purge: Election Year, and so on. Even better? Pretty much every one of them was successful at the box office. As more and more horror moves are released with the limited release / VOD model, it’s nice to know that good movies still play to big audiences at the multiplex.
And what about horror on TV?...

Lurking within pages, displayed on the big and small screens, and at home on the airwaves, the horror genre thrived last year. 2016 was packed with great genre offerings, and although it's difficult to filter through the creepy contents of such a banner year for the genre, I forced myself to choose the moments that stuck with me the most... and still haunt my nightmares.

Who says you need to adapt? As some filmmakers look towards newfangled technology for 21st century chills (Friend Request/Unfriended/The Den), writer/director Jackson Stewart scares up some vintage nostalgia with his debut feature, Beyond The Gates. Screw Facebook and Skype. Remember the good old days when people sat around in social groups, and spooked themselves silly with products you’d only find in dumpsters nowadays?
For you younger readers, VHS cassettes used to play movies on film before digital radio waves made physical copies obsolete – but Stewart’s concept dates even myself (not in my 30s yet, so I was part of the DVD uprising). Apparently games used to exist in VHS form, and you could play along with the characters on screen (like Final Destination 3 tried to do with their “Select A Fate” DVD). Well, what if those games became reality, and immersion meant realistic consequences?...

The new horror thriller film “SiREN” asks the question, “How far off the rails can a bachelor party go?” The answer is pretty far, especially if there’s a predator on the loose. The film follows an apprehensive groom-to-be Jonah (Chase Williamson) whose last hurrah before tying the knot turns nightmarish when he frees a seemingly innocent girl from a supernatural sex club. Her ruthless handler will stop at nothing to recapture his prize, but while Jonah struggles to rescue the girl, he soon discovers that she is a dangerous fabled predator that has chosen him as her mate. “SiREN” co-stars Justin Welborn (“The Final Destination”), Michael Aaron Milligan (“The Last Heist”), Hayes Mercure (“Mascots”), Randy McDowell (“Paranormal Activity”) and Hannah Fierman (“American Hell”). Watch an exclusive clip below.

David Bruckner’s “Amateur Night” segment of V/H/S is a crowd favorite amongst franchise fans, so you can imagine the excitement surrounding this year‘s feature-length Chiller adaptation. SiREN marks the cinematic return of Hannah Fierman’s beloved psycho-nymph, but how would the devilish songstress fare without a found footage perspective or Bruckner’s vision? V/H/S alumn Gregg Bishop steps in to direct a bachelor-party-gone-wrong script written by Luke Piotrowski, in an attempt to enchant viewers expecting the same obsessive terror with a lesser production feel than Bruckner’s minutes-long short. "No man can resist her..." Chiller Films has released a trailer for the new horror thriller SiREN, adapted from one of the segments in the original V/H/S horror anthology film. SiREN is a feature length version of the segment about the woman who two guys hire for a bachelor party, who turns out to be a crazy monster. You'll know exactly which one this is, as it was one of the best segments from the original V/H/S. SiREN stars Hannah Fierman as Lily, plus Chase Williamson, Justin Welborn, Michael Aaron Milligan, Hayes Mercure, Randy McDowell and Lindsey Garrett. It's cool to see them turning that one part of V/H/S into a full-length film, I'm just not sure if this is going to be too cheesy or just the right amount of creepy. There's all kinds of weird stuff going on in this, but I...

If horror movies have taught us anything, it’s that you probably shouldn’t follow a dude you meet at a strip club to a second location. That important rule appears to have been lost on the characters of “SiREN,” a feature-length adaptation of the “Amateur Night” segment from 2012’s “V/H/S.” Watch its trailer below.

The trailer begins with four bros loaded into an SUV for a “Hangover”–style bachelor party, which is sure to cause many to cheer on their imminent demise. They eventually make their way to the remote brothel of the title, a luxe mansion with enough weirdness to instantly identify itself as a bad place; once there, they learn that a woman who works there is more than she appears to be.

A bachelor party takes a deadly turn in the official trailer for SiREN, the new film from Gregg Bishop (Dance of the Dead) that's based on David Bruckner's short film from V/H/S.
Synopsis: "Siren is a horror-thriller about Jonah, an apprehensive groom-to-be whose bachelor party turns into a nightmare when he frees a seemingly innocent victimized girl locked up in a supernatural sex club. Her ruthless handler and proprietor of the sex club will stop at nothing to recapture his prize. While the 2012 horror anthology V/H/S may be uneven overall, there can be little doubt that “Amateur Night,” the segment written and directed by David Bruckner, is one of the highlights of the film. The found footage short about a group of dudebros who pick up an odd girl (Hannah Fierman) who turns out to be more than they expected, is funny and scary in the best EC Comics tradition. Because it works so beautifully as a self-contained short, it also doesn’t seem like the most obvious candidate to be adapted into a full feature film. Enter director Gregg Bishop and his new movie, Siren.
Using the same basic premise as its jumping-off point—a group of guys get more than they bargained for when they cross paths with the title character—Siren inverts the dynamics of the original short by telling the story of more or less...

He may have announced his retirement – albeit a temporary one – from filmmaking, but Academy Award winner Steven Soderbergh has not been resting on his laurels. Having delivered the critically acclaimed TV movie Behind The Candelabra, and the equally well-received TV series The Knick, The Girlfriend Experience, and Red Oaks, Soderbergh has turned his attentions to Netflix, where he will stream his latest producing project, Godless.
Godless is a limited series of just six episodes, and is written and directed by Scott Frank (The Wolverine, A Walk Among The Tombstones). Boasting Soderbergh and Casey Silver as executive producers, alongside Frank, the story is set against the backdrop of the U.S western frontier. It stars Jeff Daniels as outlaw Frank Griffin, who is relentlessly hunting his former partner-in-crime, Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell). Sirens would draw Greek sailors to their doom, with their beautiful voices. Now, at least one inhabits director Gregg Bishop (V/H/S Viral) and David Bruckner's upcoming horror feature Siren. Developed from Bruckner's short film "Amateur Night," Jonah rescues a girl, from a supernatural sex club. But, she proves more than he can handle. The film stars: Chase Williamson (John Dies at the End), Justin Welborn (The Final Destination), Michael Aaron Milligan, Hayes Mercure, and Randy McDowell. An early clip from Siren is hosted here. The clip shows Jonah (Williamson) and the Siren (Hannah Fierman) in a bathroom. Both characters are hounded by a masked, knife wielding man. Jonah cowers as the Siren attacks. And, the results are gruesome. Siren is slated for a December launch. The film will see a few theatres this December 2nd. On December 6th, the film will be launched on VOD and on DVD.

Congrats on the film, guys, I had a lot of fun with it. Jackson, can you talk about where this idea came from and the process of working on the script with Stephen?

Last month it was announced that Chiller is developing Siren, a film version of David Bruckner's V/H/S segment, Amateur Night. Now it's been revealed that Gregg Bishop will helm the adaptation of the short that delivered the chilling line, "I like you."
Ain't It Cool News revealed that Bishop (director of the eternally quotable and infectiously fun horror comedy Dance of the Dead, the insightful thriller The Other Side, and the "Dante the Great" segment of V/H/S: Viral) will helm Siren for Chiller.
Will frequent Bishop collaborator, the talented Justin Welborn, play a part in Siren? Will Hannah Fierman reprise her transformative role as Lily? No casting details are known at this time, so we'll have to wait and see. Stay tuned to Daily Dead for more details on Siren.

Vcr board games: they brought tabletop entertainment to a new, interactive level. In Beyond the Gates, though, two brothers discover a video board game that's a little too interactive, transferring them to another world where their dad's soul is on the line and a roll of the dice could lead to eternal torment. The Barbara Crampton-produced movie is now filming with Jackson Stewart behind the camera and a group of talented cast members playing the mysterious game.

Headcleaner: VHS Series Gets Third Installment Blues
Perhaps after this third installment this franchise can enter the same void for the format which it’s named, as this is by far the least thematically inventive anthology of the trio. A quintet of five up and coming horror directors spackle this latest omnibus, once loosely geared to tickle our nostalgic fancy for the retired home video format from an era where gritty and scary films used to be more prolific.
Interweaving between its three sordid tales is the wraparound segment, “Vicious Circles,” from director Marcel Sarmiento, better known as the helmer of “D is for Dog” from the first The ABCs of Death film and his feature, Deadgirl. Beginning with a tense teenage couple, whereby the young male filmmaker stumbles upon a high speed Los Angeles chase and uses the opportunity to snag some YouTube footage that will make him famous,...

When people watch V/H/S: Viral, there will undoubtably be some who question the short runtime, while there will be others scoffing at the Go-Pro cameras, iPhone videos, and other technologically advanced recorders that have nothing to do with VHS tapes, which is understandable. To provide a little backstory, Todd Lincoln (The Apparition) was supposed to have a segment in this third installment, but either the short was subsequently cut after a few test screenings or he submitted an unfinished product – whoever you choose to listen to – which doesn’t surprise me in the lest after sitting through The Apparition. And to the haters who will never silence their gripes about authenticity and VHS quality, throwing their hands in the air at the first signs of crisp quality and crystal-clear focusing? Eh, we’ll never stop the haters from hating, and it’s their loss because V/H/S:...

Dozens of fame-obsessed teens flock to the streets with their video cameras and camera phones, hell-bent on capturing the next viral video. But there is something far more sinister occurring in the streets of L.A. than a simple police chase. A resounding effect is created onto all those obsessed with capturing salacious footage for no other purpose than to amuse or titillate. I should first clarify that this interview isn’t with All of the V/H/S: Viral filmmakers, as “Team Bonestorm” conducted their own separate interview. Walking into the creepy haunted-house-looking karaoke room in Alamo South Lamar’s adjoining bar (The Highball), I was greeted by Gregg Bishop (“Dante The Great”), his lead actor Justin Welborn, Marcel Sarmiento (tasked with creating the wrap story), and Nacho Vigalondo (“Parallel Monsters”). Please note that Nacho is sleepy in this picture because he devoured an order of Nacho’s Nachos in a bout of Nacho-ception. Yup, only at Fantastic Fest do you get quality bits like that!
