Season 4 of “We’re Here” sees new hosts Priyanka, Sasha Velour, Latrice Royale and Jaida Essence Hall travelling to red states Tennessee and Oklahoma, where safety had become a concern at times because of anti-lgbtq protests and threats. “It was frightening sometimes,” Jaida told me Wednesday night at the season premiere screening and party at the Avalon Hollywood. “It was eye-opening, imagining other people like myself who have to live in those spaces and see that every day. It’s just heartbreaking.”
Series co-creator Steve Warren said, “It’s surreal we had to think about our security. We are living in 2024. Ten years ago we were so hopeful. Marriage equality had just passed. We were living in a space where we thought we’re not going to have to fight the old battles.”
Even so, the new season continues to help its participants — and cast and crew, for that matter — heal.

Zooey Deschanel is about to get Physical.
The former New Girl star has joined the cast of Apple TV+’s dramedy Physical for its third season. She’ll be a series regular in her first TV acting role since 2018, when New Girl ended its seven-season run on Fox.
Deschanel will play Kelly, a network sitcom star who decides to enter the burgeoning 1980s fitness industry — which will bring her into the world inhabited by Sheila Rubin (series lead Rose Byrne).
Physical’s second season closed with Sheila seemingly on the verge of expanding her fitness business significantly — only for her estranged husband, Danny (Rory Scovel), to tell her someone had beaten her to the market with her step aerobics idea. The revelation led to a flood of Sheila’s self-doubt and self-hatred returning after she had seemingly worked through many of those issues.

Vin Diesel had plenty to celebrate on Saturday night.
Not only did he place the winning bid of $70,000 for two court side seats at a Clippers game and a Breitling watch at a benefit for Charlize Theron’s Africa Outreach Project (Ctaop), but “F9: The Fast Saga” broke the weekend box office record since the onset of the pandemic. Exclusive: Oscar-winning Traffic scribe Stephen Gaghan will write and direct Barbarian Days for Amazon Studios, based on William Finnegan’s bestselling memoir Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life. The book won the Pulitzer Prize in 2016.
Gaghan will produce alongside Ted Hope, who will produce under his multi-picture deal with the studio. Finnegan will also be executive producer.
Barbarian Days tells the story of Finnegan’s lifelong love affair with surfing. He describes it as an obsession, a beautiful addiction, a demanding course of study, a morally dangerous pastime, a way of life. The tale starts when the author was an 8-year old kid who caught the surf bug. It helped him navigate a “locals-only” elementary school on Oahu and those same skills — understanding another culture, finding common ground, courage and empathy — helped Finnegan find his way as a writer, husband, father. And a surfer.

As the national conversation changed dramatically in the past four years, centering the importance of amplifying underrepresented voices and cultures, it altered the context of pop culture, as well. Many unscripted programs rose to the challenge by continuously casting more inclusively — whether it be a particular season’s contestants, episode-specific subjects or series-long hosts. Through these players, the shows are able to shine an international spotlight on the immigrant experience, racial divides, prejudices and concerns of the Lgbtqia+ community.
“From the beginning it was of the utmost importance to us to show the diversity within this country and in small towns,” says Johnnie Ingram, executive producer of HBO’s “We’re Here.”
The series, which nabbed a coveted unstructured reality program Emmy nom for its first season this year, follows three drag queens — DJ “Shangela” Pierce, Eureka O’Hara and Bob the Drag Queen — as they seek out the local Lgbtqia+ community and allies,...

Three beloved alumni from “RuPaul’s Drag Race” — Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka O’Hara and Shangela Laquifa Wadley — roll into small town America ready to put on a special, one-night only engagement at a local venue. Only this time, they are just the entry point into the story in HBO’s new unstructured reality series, “We’re Here.”
Created by Johnnie Ingram and Steve Warren, “We’re Here” spends six episodes following these big personalities from Missouri to Idaho to change the lives of some very special individuals.
“There’s something about drag that is an olive branch to these communities,” Ingram says. “A lot of these towns tuck away these conversations, and it’s not something you’re allowed to talk about, so it just sits. And so bringing a big, glamorous drag show to town gets people talking.”
In each town, the queens take on a drag daughter (or two), transforming the person in look,...

Updated with details of event: At a Hollywood fundraiser Tuesday night , Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg warned of the crowd to not get too caught up in what President Donald Trump says, by “not allowing him to dominate our conversation about the future.”
Buttigieg asked supporters gathered at the Avalon Nightclub to “help us make sure that we don’t go on his show and play his game, that we pick up the remote and change the channel.”
Introduced by Mandy Moore, Buttigieg spoke for about 40 minutes, answering written questions from attendees that were selected from a fishbowl.
Asked why voters should select him, as opposed to others in the mammoth Democratic field, Buttigieg quipped that he offered the “only chance to vote for a Maltese american, Episcopalian, gay millennial mayor.” But he also said that he was a candidate from middle America who offered a voice that could cut...

English child actor Noah Jupe has been cast as the young lead opposite Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant in The Undoing, HBO’s high-profile six-episode limited series, written by David E. Kelley and directed by Susanne Bier.
The project reunites Jupe with Bier — one of his first major roles was in the British limited series The Night Manager, which Bier directed.
An adaptation of Jean Hanff Korelitz’s book You Should Have Known, The Undoing centers on Grace Sachs (Kidman), who is living the only life she ever wanted for herself. She’s a successful therapist, has a devoted husband (Grant) and young son (Jupe) who attends an elite private school in New York City. Overnight a chasm opens in her life: a violent death, a missing husband, and, in the place of a man Grace thought she knew, only a chain of terrible revelations.
